Should have read this novel long time ago. Just sat in my bookshelf all this time. Glad have a chance to pick it up. It was simply one of marvelous and Should have read this novel long time ago. Just sat in my bookshelf all this time. Glad have a chance to pick it up. It was simply one of marvelous and exciting novels that I have read all my life. The story is well written as it highlights the lives of all the people involved in the process of the building of the cathedral. While reading this, it was not always a happy merry plot all the way.
The building of this church and all of the ups and downs that Prior Phillip went through in his lifetime with this project, really is a testament to how life is, there are good times and there are bad and sometimes you question whether good ever really triumphs over evil. The building of this cathedral in Kingsbridge was a true test of faith for all involved as the devil never stopped working against it. A must read....more

I'm not familiar with Bernhard works. It got my attention to pick it up because of the award that it got. Revulsion is not an easy nor pleasant read, but it has an energy and drive that carries the reader through. The narrator just keeps on ranting about national problems on El Salvador, which kind of what people might feel at that time. The hatred and despise to his home country might offense some readers....more
