It's late so this is gunna be short.
Colors are soft, very gentle. Line work has a sketchy quality, but like loose and messy sketchy [and I'm usually fine with that, until I see squiggles, I'm not saying that you can't have controlled squiggles being used for shading or texture BUT the squiggles used here are too loose and that makes it feel very messy. At times I will notice the background looks more like a very loose line-art of the background and we place solid colors over it, like there's large full page illustrations of the background and it looks very nicely detailed, nicely colored, I want to see the nice backgrounds even in the smaller panels.
The characters are enjoyable. The plot, in its most basic form, is nothing we haven't seen before, but it is an interesting take on Hades and Persephone.
It's a fun read, definitely recommend that people give it a chance....more

In this one Hilda is still learning to traverse the town, ends up helping a raven that got bonked by a rock get his memories back, and still makes it in time for the big parade.
I can understand how Hilda's mum could worry about Hilda wandering alone in the town. Towns can be dangerous, especially for someone who just moved here [Hilda doesn't have a good grasp of the layout of the place and wandering about can just leave her lost], and of course people themselves pose their own dangers. I just wish mum would voice these worries to Hilda instead of just telling her she's not allowed to do things. Hilda has seen monsters she's faced dangers, I'm sure she'd understand [especially now that she's had a taste of being lost].
I know it might seem weird for her mum to be ok with her wandering in nature [and how dangerous the outside can be, tripping over stuff and breaking bones, falling into water, animals, trolls]. But Hilda grew up there, she knew those woods backwards and forwards, she was capable of handling nature. But with no other human interaction except mum, and then being thrown into town, it would scare a parent about how their kid might adapt....more
Princess Pinecone lives in a kingdom of warriors [everyone kicks butt], and while she considers herself a warrior as well, she is the smallest warriorPrincess Pinecone lives in a kingdom of warriors [everyone kicks butt], and while she considers herself a warrior as well, she is the smallest warrior [I want to disagree that probably any babies or toddlers are the smallest warriors of the kingdom but this is her story so let's not nitpick the princess].
She is super excited for the great battle [waged once a year I believe] where it's just a free for all brawl for any and all warriors that want to compete. She's also super excited for her birthday, because she's asked for a warrior horse, not only would it be an asset to her as a warrior, but all the other warriors would get fantastic warriors presents [shields, and helmets, things to help them win battles]her's were never something a stereotypical warrior would get [she got a lot of cute cozy sweaters].
Her parents tried their best, but instead of a strong and fast warrior horse she gets a little pony; naturally Princess Pinecone is more than a little disappointed "it's too small, it's too round". But you don't say no to a birthday present, so she has to find a way to make do with her pony.
Princess Pinecone tries her best in teaching the pony how to be a warrior horse, but the pony is just a pony and can't do much. Regardless Princess Pinecone decides to do the great battle anyway, telling the pony to "just do his best".
That's as much summary as I feel is important without summarizing everything that happens [it's not a long book]. The art is very cute, Princess Pinecone is a confident and ambitious young warrior princess who refuses to be stopped by anything, even a warrior horse that's technically a pony. But the main point of the story, which might seem not as clearly stated as "morals" in kids books usually are, that just because you're a strong and fearsome warrior doesn't mean you can't also like cute things. Feel free to show off your cuddly side every once in a while.
PS. For anyone reading this, the line "the pony ate things it shouldn't have, and farted too much" is not a fart joke, it is a fact. Any sizable animal will fart with reckless abandon [I feel horses and cows do it moreso, but it might just be more noticeable due to their size]...more

Admittedly most of the writing is character dialogue instead of a mix of dialogue and actions. I've only ever seen mostly dialogue in comic books, usually a kids book will somewhat describe what the characters are doing, but this one seems to rely solely on the illustrations to make up the "what the characters are doing and where they are in their environment". It makes sense, show with images talking with words, but after reading so many books, regardless of how much or how little illustration there is, I find it really weird to not have so little [if any] descriptors about what the characters are actively doing before, as, and after they speak....more

It might not be on the scarier side while reading it, I mean sure turning your cat into a giant tiger it pretty terrifying. It was just more entertaining, the character interactions were funnier, getting everything under control [while an easy twist to tease out if you're an adult reading this book] will probably be pretty fun for kids to read through.
This was more of a fun/comedy horror story. Heavily recommended. ...more

A group of 4 friends, 2 boys and 2 girls, are playing baseball when their ball falls into the yard of this spooky old house that a little old lady lives in. The kids are positive that she's a witch, and while they get the baseball back but Amanda loses her friendship bracelet, and 3/4 of the kids are pretty sure that the witch is gunna curse her because she has it now and then shenanigans happen.
For a kid, it is kinda spooky, there's a witch next door, there's a ghost that appears, the kids are all on their own with this problem. A younger reader would probably get a kick out of this.
Me, personally, I think it could have been better. The plot centers around a doll that seems haunted that Amanda and her friends dig up in the yard, that helps the ghost appear, and they think the little old lady next door is a witch and is cursing them. Lot's of potential, but personally I felt the reason they went digging and managed to dig up the doll, was a little forced. Amanda has lost a lot of pets in her life, they're all buried in the backyard, having to bury a random squirrel that just appears feels almost like a cop out reason. I don't think we needed the whole "kids think the neighbor is a witch", that felt like a mini plot point that wasn't as necessary if the main plot point was the haunted doll and the ghost. I just think it could have been better, I've read other deadtime stories that have been written a little more succinctly, so I just felt like this one was lacking....more

Strong, confident young women bringing with good intentions, creativity, and ambition.
It is for younger readers, and I feel that it is a great introduction to comics. I find that comics are usually an easier way to get kids into reading since it still includes a lot of pictures [like picture books tend to have] but the stories are also a little more advanced.
I recommend the Thea Sisters as a set of confident young role models for girls that like action adventure but still want to look cute while kicking butt. ...more

Emily, his adorable little neighbor, has a lot of hobbies; basketball, singing, the ballet, boxing, juggling [I am very proud of the diverse interests of this girl, but considering that it's dark outside in the story, and they live in apartments, she probably needs to quiet down].
Roger can't focus with all the noise so he decides to give her a new activity, Roger gives her a book to read, and they both enjoy some silence.... until the dog barks up a fuss cause he needs to go out.
It's a cute and quick read about how maybe suggesting a quiet activity will work out better in your favor than just knocking [or telling someone to quiet down, give them something to be quiet with]. I especially loved how the dog was quietly trying to alert Roger to needing to go out, but he got ignored until he started borking. I'm a fan of when illustrations actually SHOW me something needs to happen, instead of telling me or jumping from act to act and scene to scene without proper transition. Kudos to this kids book for doing something most professional graphic novels fail at.
While it's an easy read, you might wanna read it with a 5+ year old, since they'll probably understand why Roger is frustrated, as well as get the joke of the dog being loud once it finally gets all quiet....more

As someone who sleeps maybe 5 hours a night, this book was written for me, not for kids. I don't know any kid that likes to snooze, nap, or sleep.
But the story is pretty cute and funny, about a little sloth that sleeps a lot, wakes up to go to a snoofest, sleeps through the snoozefest, then goes home for more sleep.
I will reiterate, this is more of a story for adults to live vicariously through....more
