I liked the theme/concepts but none of the characters really stood out to me. I also don't think the book blurb really tells you what the book is about. I don't find it believable that the public would watch that reality show or that the parents would love the AI kids like real children. It wasn't just that, though, I didn't care for any of the characters, and the plot was a huge stretch.
This is my 3rd book by this author - I've given all of them 3 stars. Forgettable but mildly entertaining....more

Overall this was fantastic. I love Valka and worry that the book is setting us up for her death at some point in the future. I also really loved that (view spoiler)[ we get to see Gibson again, which I did not expect, I loved that Hadrian got his chance to say goodbye. I also feel really oblivious as it did not click for me until this book that Mercanii = Americans. Duh. That seems so obvious. (hide spoiler)].
This series is amazing, yes the books are all 800+ pages, but totally worth it....more

I greatly enjoyed this book, although it's not an easy read. It's "hard sci-fi," and you will need to refer to the list of characters and lexicon regularly. It's not quite Malazan-level difficult, but you will need some patience and perseverance to get started.
A lot of reviews are comparing this series to Name of the Wind or Dune (I hated both), so I'm glad I didn't choose not to read it based on that. The characters and world-building are great. I liked knowing upfront that Hadrian does a terrible thing (destroying a sun/solar system), but not knowing how he got to that point. I'm very interested in finding out more about the Cielcin and the Quiet.
Hopefully, the rest of the books in the series stay strong....more

1. It's too preachy and heavy-handed with the message. I found it really annoying to have all the footnotes with "real-life" statistics in it. I'm reading a book set at least 20 years in the future yet the author keeps putting in footnotes about prison stats from 2000-2018. It really broke the immersion for me.
2. The author is very critical of the penal system (and I'm not trying to get into politics or say she's wrong), but all he does is point out the flaws and offers no ideas or suggestions on how to improve. If imprisonment for violent offenders isn't the answer, what is? He has no solution really, I would have been interested to know what he thought would work.
3. There are so many side-stories and characters and most of them are not important or relevant. Sometimes I'd be reading a chapter and have NO IDEA whose POV it was until 5 pages later. It was frustrating....more
