Architect, Edward Monkford, is a rigid, no-nonsense, peculiar man. His architectural designs are so unique that they are normally rejected but he stands behind them. One Folgate Street is a minimalistic designed home, that is absent of personal effects, controlled by an app that also measures the health metrics of the tenants. Emma and her boyfriend, Simon, and Jane all had an interest in living in this home but at different times. After a home invasion, Emma and Simon discovered One Folgate Street. The violation that Emma experienced caused them to believe that the security measures that were put in place at One Folgate Stree would provide the safety that they needed. With the stillborn death of her daughter, Isabel, Jane was looking to start life anew and One Folgate Street was the answer.
No one knew, except for Edward, of the sacrifices that it would take to live in this home. As a pre-requisite, Edward had a rigid application questionnaire process before interviewing the tenant. The process was so stringent that the home was left vacant for at least a year. Edward put this process in place because he had the desire to relive and correct his past by choosing women who looked and possessed similar character traits as his deceased wife, with the hopes of beginning again. He was able to measure these traits based on his questionnaire and the interviews. Emma and Jane never met but lived parallel lives at One Folgate Street during different eras and times. Each had an uninhibited and unhindered relationship with Edward. As the story unfolds the lives of Edward, Emma, Jane, and Simon intermingle, weave, and connect in an extremely unusual and unique way that each will be challenged with making decisions of importance to them as it centers around Edward and living at One Folgate Street. I was so hooked that I read this book twice with each time feeling like I was watching a movie. Oliver Ryan (Vincent Dax) was a successful talented award-winning children’s book author. He always said that it was not only his writing that is the key to his success but it was his wife, Alice’s illustrations that made each story come alive. This was partially true. As a lady’s man no one knew that behind his charisma was always a trail of tragedy, and disappointment wherever he went beginning within himself. Oliver was constantly trying to prove to his father, a priest, that he missed out on raising him. Since his birth, Oliver’s father always felt ashamed of having a son out of wedlock that he conceived during a missionary trip in Zambia. His father took his mishap out on Oliver and would make him pay a hefty price of isolation and abandonment from childhood to adulthood.
Oliver created a life of illusion that would become the channel of how he lived his life as an adult. He married Alice which was a shock to many. She was a quiet mousey type of woman that held him in high esteem, was not one to pry, and had no issues in meeting any of his demands. Whenever Oliver had a significant life event, he never had any type of family support whether it was his wedding-which Alice had her mother, and her 27-year-old brother, Eugene, who has special needs present-or his book signings, his father maintained his distance. No one knew that his writing career was a lie and that he had stolen those children's stories during an internship in college, where he volunteered abroad at Chateau d’Aigse along with his girlfriend, Laura, and her brother, Michael.
On this trip, Oliver would find his father in Monsieur d’Aigse (Papa) and Jean-Luc but he did not possess the same closeness with Madame Veronique, daughter of Papa, and mother of Jean-Luc but he was still welcomed into the family. He wanted so much to be accepted by the d’Aigse Family that instead of becoming a part of the unit he accidentally killed Papa and Jean-Luc. Years after the deaths Oliver’s life began to unravel and the secret of the locked wooden box that was responsible for his children’s stories would become uncovered by Alice. Oliver felt that all these years that he had everything under control but once Alice exposed his hidden secret all the hurt, pain, and rejection that Oliver felt all his life he took it out on Alice. He became so enraged that he beat Alice into a coma and he ended up in a mental institution. There are so many other layers to this story that you will enjoy. Growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved watching TV Shows of different types here are a few: The Jetsons, Flintsones, I Spy, Mission Impossible, Popeye,Growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved watching TV Shows of different types here are a few: The Jetsons, Flintsones, I Spy, Mission Impossible, Popeye, Looney Tunes, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Underdog, Mr. Magoo, The Addams Family, Sesame Street, My Favorite Martian, Hawaii Five-O, Gilligan’s Island, H.R. Pufnstuf, The Electric Company, Perry Mason, The Green Hornet, Spider Man, The Monkees, and The Carol Burnett Show. Just creating this list brings a lot of smiles to my face because of the connection, comedy, laughter and suspense that these diverse shows brought to my young mind and face but I digress of why we are here today. I am going to focus on the book, In Such Good Company by Carol Burnett which outlines all of the different people that she got to work with within the eleven seasons that she was on the air. Her show ran from 1967 to 1978 and displayed a lot of scenes, sketches, and parodies that maybe a few of you are familiar with. In the book she goes behind the scenes to discuss her humble beginnings within the entertainment industry which we all know was male dominated and in some cases still is. Despite these things she was able to develop a cast of wonderful talent from Vickie Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner to my two favorities Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. Carol gives homage to her wonderful high profile team of choreographers, writers, sound effects crew, orchestra and costume stylist that made the show not only a success but a pleasure to work with throughout the eleven years. Let’s go on a journey into some of the sketches and parodies that she made from famous TV or movie scenes and turned them into her own. These were so funny and memorable to me not only due to the acting but the set design, and costumes: Went With the Wind, As the Stomach Turns, Mrs. Wiggins and Mr. Tudball, and the Family which turned into Mama’s Family. Throughout her journey she was able to cultivate some wonderful friendships with several celebrites that graced the stage and became a part of the various scenes that brought laughter and tears throughout the years from Flip Wilson, Dick Van Dyke, Vincent Price, Jim Nabors, Lucille Ball, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, The Jackson, Ray Charles, and Carol Channing to Jerry Lewis. This book really gave me pleasure to read and brought me back to my childhood immediately as I begin to recall several of those scenes that she pointed out in the book. My uttermost favorite was Mrs. Wiggins and Mr. Tudball to see them interact and improvise was pure genius. To Carol’s surprise it was costume designer, Bob Mackie, that created the look for Mrs. Wiggins that was hilarious as she describe was like a blond bimbo. It was touching to gain an understanding of why she pulled her left ear because it was a way of saying Hi to her grandmother, Nanny, who raised her and was instrumental in why the entertainment industry played a bit part in her life. If you love comedy and want to read a great book about a woman challenging the industry and making a difference in her own way this book is a must. Also, join me in watching The Carol Burnett Show or Mama’s Family that is still airing to see some of the sketches and parodies that I mentioned. Before I go let me continue with more of the shows that I’ve enjoyed as a kid: I Dream of Jeannie, Get Smart, The Benny Hill Show, Betwitched, Batman, Room 222, Dragnet, Big Valley, Pink Panther, Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Munsters, Night Gallery, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Show, Mister Rogers, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Three’s Company, Facts of Life, Different Strokes, see you next time…..The Jeffersons, Welcome Back Kotter, Sanford and Son, Dark Shadows, Outer Limits, Dallas, Fantasy Island, Barney Miller, Partridge Family…..

Some people who were once homeless are now living as millionaires or billionaires. Some people who lived a life of poverty are set on a path of servicing others. Some people are highly educated and could do more with their lives but instead decided to fight against injustice and equal rights. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi gives a chronicle account of the challenges that the author experienced once he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. During his short time on earth, he desired to become a neurosurgeon due to his fascination with the brain but he died at the age of thirty-six before his dream became a reality. While he had this desire to understand the mechanics of the brain he believed that if he had not been a neurosurgeon and if he had been more religious, he might have become a pastor. But life had another purpose for him that allowed us the pleasure of hearing his story. It was not his position as a neurosurgeon or as a pastor that needed to be told but that of passion, persistence, and looking at life in the face and living it head-on despite the outcome. The irony is that as a doctor he once cared for others and eventually ended up with others caring for him. Reciprocity and karma speak loudly here. While he was unable to finish the book you can still feel the beauty and his presence throughout the pages, his transparency of the highs and lows as he questioned why he was betrayed at the peak of his life, the love and passion for working with his patients, and the love that others had for him. I fully enjoyed this story and am glad that I was able to meet a person who was able to fulfill their purpose on this earth in more ways than one. Highly recommended. When Breath Becomes Air...more
