Kromě barvitě vylíčených, živých postav, jejichž zklamané naděje i radosti jsem mohla prožívat s nimi a poutavého příběhu, mi na knize asi nejvíc vyhovovalo, co všechno jsem se z ní dozvěděla. Dějiny pohraničí, v němž se prolínaly a do značné míry dodnes prolínají elementy řady různých národností, pro mě byly vlastně jedna velká neznámá. Do toho počátky hornictví, lázeňství v kraji, zachycení tehdejšího způsobu života a práce (Jak jsem je obdivovala a umiňovala si, že bych se měla inspirovat jejich šetrností a schopností využít každý předmět nejen celoživotně, ale po řadu generací!), cesty do Wieliczky (kterou jsem shodou okolností kdysi navštívila) a nakonec samozřejmě válka a nečekané informace o následné válce občanské, o níž jsem neměla ani potuchy. Dělo se toho skutečně hodně, v polovině knihy jsem se radovala, že mám ještě takový kus před sebou a budu dál sledovat vývoj postav a celé oblasti, prostě pro mě to bylo neuvěřitelně poutavé. O to větší štěstí jsem pocítila, když jsem se na stránkách autorky později dozvěděla, že se jedná o první díl zamýšlené trilogie, že není všemu konec, a že budu toho „celého krásného dvacátého století“ svědkem s nimi. Naprosto neuvěřitelné je, že se jedná o debut, protože autorka má ruku očividně vypsanou a nepředkládá žádné začátečnické dílo. Děkuji a těším se na pokračování. ...more

Moc bych si přála, aby jeho knihy vycházely i v českýcMa Ťien se za ty roky propracoval suverénně na vrchol mého pomyslného žebříčku čínských autorů. Moc bych si přála, aby jeho knihy vycházely i v českých překladech, neznám žádného jiného čínského autora, který by čtenáře dokázal zavést do tolika pro nás nedostupných zákoutí současné Číny – bere nás s sebou skutečně do míst, kam bychom se nikdy nedostali, ne tak, jako on, mladý čínský bohém, deptaný rigidností a absurditou systému, do něhož se narodil a který je ochotný se ušpinit a žít jako vagabund, vlézt do každého stanu, chatrče či díry, která se mu namane a o všem nám pak vyprávět. O čtvrt století později se Ma Ťien opět vydal na cestu a nasbíral materiál na svůj fantastický román The Dark Road . Je to úžasný autor a zasloužil by si u nás víc pozornosti.
Red Dust se odehrává v osmdesátých letech a musím říct, že mi to, až na čínská specifika, neskutečně připomínalo vzpomínky českých bohémů a disidentů. První zhruba pětina knihy nás uvádí do tehdejší doby a je to fascinující čtení. Ostatně jako i zbytek knihy. No dobře, co si budeme namlouvat, prostě číst Ma Ťienovy vzpomínky a nahlédnout mu trochu do hlavy pro mě byla radost, takový ten univerzální pocit spřízněnosti, sounáležitosti, který pocítíte vůči jiné lidské bytosti, když se vám svěří s nicotnými intimnostmi svého života a které vám rezonují s těmi vašimi.
Ma Ťien popisuje, co jej vlastně vedlo k tomu, aby se na cestu vydal a i své putování líčí značně netradičně, už jen proto, že ani on se nechová jako standardní poutník – cestou podvádí, pere se, využívá naivity svého okolí, a přesto mu to nemáte ani za mák za zlé. Vidí krásu, ale vidí i realitu – rozpadající se památky a vylidňující se vesnice a městečka. Setkává se s lidmi všeho druhu, bloudí pouští, okukuje děvčata, přivydělává si pro mě zcela absurdními způsoby (to by se v socialistickém Československu skutečně nestalo :)), musím říct, že u některých pasážích jeho cestopisu jsem se skutečně bavila. Ano, čtete dobře – cestopisu, Ma Ťien za svou knihu roku 2002 obdržel Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, své první ocenění.
Ma Ťien věří, že je nejvíc třeba psát o tom, co se totalitní režim nejvíc snaží ututlat. V důsledku toho jsou jeho knihy naprosto děsivé - jako světlometem se zaměřuje na nejtemnější a nejnelidštější stránky současné Číny, naprosto záměrně vytahuje na světlo kostlivce, kteří měli v čínské komunistické skříni zůstat navždy hluboko pohřbeni. A ti kostlivci hnijí a odpadává z nich maso. A jsou prolezlí červy a larvami. No, máte představu, jak může na člověka střetnutí s Ma Ťienovou Čínou působit. Nemůžu tvrdit, že by mě četba jeho knih uváděla do deprese, ale pokaždé mě dokonale rozhodí. Red Dust je jiná. Ne že by si autor bral servítky či cokoli (včetně vlastního konání) přikrašloval, nicméně popisuje svoje tříleté putování Čínou a za tu dobu viděl i řadu krásných míst a potkal mnoho zajímavých lidí. Musím říct, že se mi velice hodilo, že jsem knihu četla v elektronické podobě: když Ma Ťien později v textu zmiňuje, co kdo z jeho známých dělal mezitím, mohla jsem si jejich jména ve čtečce vyhledat a připomenout si kontext – kolikrát jsem se dost podivila :)
Svou cestu završil v Tibetu, a to, co zde viděl, mu způsobilo takový šok, že se z toho později potřeboval vypsat – tak vznikla jeho prvotina, sbírka povídek Stick Out Your Tongue , která mu v zápětí vysloužila odsouzení v rámci kampaně proti duchovnímu znečištění, která probíhala od října 1983 do prosince 1983. Ma Ťien se dostal na seznam zakázaných autorů a na pevninské Číně už si ani neškrtl.
Red Dust je podle mě z jeho knih asi nejhravější, nejosobnější a i nejpřátelštější, takže vám ji neváhám vřele doporučit.

Neustále se k té knize musím v duchu vracet. Přečetla jsem mezitím další dvě knihy o Číně a stále se utvrzuji v dojmu, že Yiyun Li (Li I-jün) dostala do své knihy snad úplně všechno. Zcela nenápadně, letmo, nebo naopak s brutální přímostí, autorka vypichuje celou plejádu neblahých jevů tehdejší (a v mnoha ohledech bohužel i současné) Číny. Příběh se sice odehrává v rozmezí několika málo týdnů, ale protože jej zalidňuje celá řada postav s bohatou a pohnutou osobní historií, má skutečně spád a sleduje celou situaci z mnoha různých úhlů pohledu. A nemůžu přestat myslet na toho ježka – tak podružná příhoda, tak bezvýznamná a přitom tak otřesná a tak vypovídající. A tak je to tam se vším, za každou maličkostí se může skrývat hlubina, nikdo není černobílý, ale všichni jsou nakonec skutečně ubožáci. Jak příhodný název....more
Podobnou knihu jsem asi ještě nečetla. Je nesmírně rozmanitá. Kolik je v ní různých postav, kolik aspektů a hlubin či mělčin má každá z nich, tolik tvPodobnou knihu jsem asi ještě nečetla. Je nesmírně rozmanitá. Kolik je v ní různých postav, kolik aspektů a hlubin či mělčin má každá z nich, tolik tváří má i tahle kniha. Když odhlédneme od hlavní události, kolem níž se vyprávění vine, tedy rozhovoru filosofa s mnichem, otce se synem, středem příběhu je ne-vztah Wang Mo-ťieho s Ükji. Výraznou roli hraje i samotná krajina, Tibet - tedy výsek Tibetu, jak jej vnímají v zásadě ne-Tiběťané. Prostřednictvím historie Ükjiny rodiny nahlédneme i do tibetských dějin, Matthieu pohovoří o tibetském budhismu, ale zároveň tu máme i naprosto současnou a syrovou vnitřní rozervanost našich protagonistů. Střídá se úhel pohledu, střídá se záběr, místy i vypravěč (neboť on přece není Wang Mo-ťie, řekl nám to už několikrát), střídají se tu historky o zahrádce, výtržnictví a vesnické škole a jejích žácích s filosofickými rozpravami, erotikou, duchovním vytržením, oslavou krajiny i prostým lidským povzdechnutím. Ani ty poznámky pod čarou nejsou jen poznámky pod čarou, ale nedílná součást narativu. Je to nesmírně podmanivá kniha. Určitě jsem ji nečetla naposledy, musím říct, že jsem z ní naprosto unešená....more

Postavy jako chameleoni měnící barvu kůže v různých podmínkách, a naopak jedinci změny zcela neschopní, kteří přijedou do Grónska se svými korzety, parukami a oslavami šíleného krále. Fascinující bizarní vyprávění o blouznivcích grónských hor a jednom magistrovi, který mezi dvěma odlišnými světy hledá své místo. Je mi nesmírně líto, že si od autora zatím nemůžu přečíst žádné další dílo, neboť ani do angličtiny nepřeložili nic než Proroky. Třeba se dočkáme v češtině?...more

Řeknu vám, nebyl to úplně příjemný pocit, ale na druhou stranu, ty vize, které ke mně během toho vysílala, ve mně vzbuzovaly nejasnou touhu, že by nemuselo být tak marné se jí nechat pohltit. Je to přesně tak, jak se píše v anotaci, která je tentokrát výborně napsaná, dodat už jen můžu snad pár euforických výkřiků, ale momentálně vě mně převládá spíš dojem, že si celou knihu budu muset brzy přečíst znovu a nějak udatněji se s ní popasovat. V zásadě pojednává o lidech a vztazích mezi nimi, ať už to jsou lidé pozemští či vzdálenější, o schopnosti rozhodnout se mezi (po)voláním a láskou, o vyrovnání se s vlastní minulostí i budoucností. Zasazení děje na planetu ve vzdálené galaxii je v podstatě jen nutnou kulisou pro příběh. Tím ale nechci naznačovat, že by autor planetu Oasis nebral vůbec vážně a věnoval jí málo prostoru. Naopak, mezi mé oblíbené pasáže patří kupříkladu Faberův úžasný popis místní atmosféry a dokonale zvláštní ekosystém výborně nahrává biblickým aluzím. Navzdory tomu, a i faktu, že hlavní postava je kazatel, to ovšem není kniha o náboženství, stejně jako se nejedná o sci-fi jako takové. Hlavním nositelem děje je Peter, ideální křesťan, který se nevtírá, snaží se jít příkladem a má soucit a pochopení, sám má za sebou divokou minulost, ze kterému mu pomohla se dostat právě jeho žena Bea. Bea, která zůstala na Zemi a s Peterem může komunikovat pouze prostřednictvím elektronických dopisů a díky ní dostáváme nahlédnout do dějů na naší planetě ve Faberově nespecifikované budoucnosti: Zemi postihuje řada nebývale silných přírodních katastrof, která následně vyvolává rozpad místní infrastruktury a neprospívá ani mezinárodním vztahům. Jak může ženě trpící úzkostí a nedostatkem doma v Anglii pomoci muž, který nachází skutečnou oázu křesťanství a archaické prostoty a klidu na vzdálené planetě? Tahle kniha mě oslovila na skutečně mnoha úrovních, je poetická i napínavá, děj je zpočátku povlovný, spíše než jako příběh působí jako sled přítomností, s důrazem na detail, duševní rozpoložení, ale zároveň se mu nějak daří vás neustále vtahovat hlouběji a hlouběji dovnitř. Bez přestávky. Prostě pořád. Je to kniha, kterou jsem nechtěla nikdy dočíst, ale odkládat se to už také nedalo. Jsem tedy upřímně ráda, že se českého překladu ujal právě Viktor Janiš a nesmírně se těším, že až jej dokončí a kniha vyjde, přečtu si ji ještě jednou :) Protože u Janiše mám jistotu, že si dá tu práci a má ten dar, aby Faberův nádherný jazyk přeložil přesně tak, jak odpovídá duchu a atmosféře příběhu. Už se nemůžu dočkat druhého setkání!...more

Tak dlouho, až se stal součástí mého života a každý den jsem se nemohla dočkat těch ukradených chvilek, kdy se kolem knihy obtočím, ponořím se do viktoriánského Londýna a doprovázena magneticky přitažlivým hlasem vypravěčky se vydám sledovat životní příběhy Sugar, Williama Rackhama, jeho ženy Agnes, paní Foxové (moje zdaleka nejoblíbenější postava) a řady dalších. Takhle výborně napsanou a přeloženou knihu potkáte málokdy, četba byla skutečně požitek a postupný vývoj událostí byl dílem přirozený, dílem nečekaný, přesně v tom správném poměru, aby vás přikoval do křesla a knihu jste měli chuť bránit vlastním tělem. Protože jsem měla to štěstí se s autorem osobně setkat a pohovořit s ním ještě předtím, než jsem Kvítek dočetla, místy mi vrtalo hlavou, jak tak křehce a zranitelně působící muž mohl dokázat stvořit tak přímou, leckdy i brutální knihu, která nic nezastírá a zároveň nádherně košatým jazykem vábí čtenáře stále hlouběji do temného srdce života ani ne tehdejších prostitutek, jako spíš Společnosti a jejích Pravidel a Požadavků (jak by možná napsala Agnes). Je úžasné sledovat, jak exoticky tehdejší Londýn působí a zároveň si uvědomovat, že lidská povaha je neměnná a jen si teď nachází trošku odlišné cestičky. Když jsem nakonec vyplavala na hladinu příběhu a odpotácela se na břeh, necítím žádné vysvobození, cítím se .. podivně prázdná a opuštěná. Tento román jsem určitě nečetla naposledy. Rozhodně si jej nenechte ujít....more
