Always in the background and never fully revealed are those cosmic forces that encourage this failing of the human heart and draw sustenance from the pain it causes, an overarching story element comparable in some ways to what Robert W. Chambers did with The King in Yellow, an unexplained mythos of evil. A wonderful book....more

I think it is a great, creepy collection of work from very talented authors. I am proud to have a story among so many fine tales. Fans of extreme horror might not find what they want in the book. For myself, I've always enjoyed the creepy side of horror over the in-your-face, grotesque, or violent side. This one will spook you good!...more

Clark is the second installment of the series GIACO & LUCA. The story takes place in a very colorful Renaissance Florence with a lived-in “sense of place,” full of mystery and magic. The idea of shadows becoming independent of those who cast them is explored in a unique way, disturbing, yet charming. The main character, Giacomo, has an intense sense of loyalty and commitment to his role in the household of a royal family. He is a hero of military campaigns, has survived great violence and severe injury in the past and yet not known fear until recently. Moving through the fear that the supernatural conflict element in the story brings to him, he dreads becoming immobilized by it, struggling to do his duty of protecting a young charge despite the danger. This struggle with himself is at the heart of the tale and is most compelling.
I was unaware that this story was the second part of a series when I began it. It stood on its own quite well, but I want more. Now, I will have to go back and read the first installment, The Shadowy Man. I thank the author for providing me with an advance review copy. This review is my true opinion of the work....more

An average guy and his pals, religious fanatics, an abusive wealthy criminal with the local government in his pocket, an obsessive-compulsive small time drug dealer, cavorting crows and rats, and a truly bizarre King trying to reclaim his throne. These are just a few of the truly strange and wonderful characters that move about a stage built of a small Candian town. This is a wild and woolly novel with a sense of humor, and a great sense of mystery....more

The story gives us a window into the the changes in the age-old class system that Victorian London, along with much of the “civilized” world, clung to in the 19th century, and shows us something of the struggles of the poor, of women, of people of conscience of the time, and the seeds of change inadvertently sown by the brutality of the Whitechapel Murderer....more
