But when I got to the end 1 deducted one star because it finishes on a CLIFFHANGER, an absolute crime as far as I'm concerned. I found the first 6-7 chapters of world-building tedious and a bit boring. I've seen this book described as dark fantasy and romance, but for me it was just depressing. The abject and unrelenting poverty and cruelty experienced by Alizeh is not entertaining. I know it was in the top votes for best YA fantasy, and I find that baffling....more

The writing is beautiful, and at times the description was excellent and gave a sense of the place and time. But sometimes it was tedious. This was a brilliant audio production, more like a radio play than audiobook, but i really disliked the music. Not the music itself but the placement and length of the pieces, I found it disrupted the story, and is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. I wasn’t immediately drawn into to story, but by halfway through I couldn’t put it down, and by the end I wanted more, wanted to know what came next. ...more

I gave an extra star for the surprise ending, I didn’t see that coming. I liked the story and the characters, but the long battle descriptions and the long sex scenes took away from the story, for me.
