Some of the stories were continuations of ones which began in the previous two books and some were stand-alone tales. I had to go back and skim the endings of some of the stories in the prior anthology to familiarize myself with the back story of the finales. Stand outs for me were Dancing with a Stranger in the Land of Nod by Will McIntosh, Wandering Star by Leife Shallcross, Resistance by Seanan McGuire, The Gray Sunrise by Jake Kerr, and In The Woods by Hugh Howey. The Howey stories were my favorites in all three books as they were set in the same world as his excellent Silo series (Wool, Shift, Dust). I must say the shocking ending of his short story, In The Woods, in The End Has Come was a kick in the gut for fans of his Silo books. ...more

It was hard to remember the previous events in some of the stories in the second volume. Luckily, I had the first volume handy and could go back to the prior story to remind myself of what happened. I wonder if I should've waited until all three volumes were out and then read each story all the way through? Standouts for me included: Herd Immunity by Tananarive Due, Fruiting Bodies by Seanan McGuire, Agent Isolated by David Wellington, Avtomat by Daniel Wilson, Dancing With Batgirl in the Land of Nod by Will McIntosh, and In The Mountain by Hugh Howey. The Howey stories are especially satisfying for fans of his Wool books. Looking forward to Volume III. ...more

I liked John Joseph Adams' prior Wastelands anthology, and he added Hugh Howey of Wool fame as an editor for these three collections. I was surprised how many of the authors I was familiar with from novels I've read or short stories I've heard on fiction podcasts. A couple of the stories toward the end of the collection did not appeal to me but overall the collection was really solid. I would highly recommend to any fans of dystopian or apocalyptic fiction. ...more
Pretty solid collection of end of the world / apocalyptic fiction. Some stories really stood out and some were just average but overall a good read. IPretty solid collection of end of the world / apocalyptic fiction. Some stories really stood out and some were just average but overall a good read. I wish Stephen Baxter's Hugo nominated "Last Contact" would've been included but it may have post dated the book publication as they were both from 2008....more
