That took time to find the volumes and clear my reading list to read them. The Sin du Jour series needs to be read in order for events to make sense, so start with The Envy of Angels and work your way up. That said, I found Gluttony Bay to be a bit disappointing. It felt like a filler novella between Greedy Pigs and Taste of Wrath. There is a cool rescue, but the setup seems hurried and not as organic as in other volumes. Still a necessary read for the series.

This is a prequel to the Please Don't Tell My Parents series, so it might not make much sense unless you have read some of that series. That out of the way. Irene is a retired superhero, well sort of retired. She had a very bad experience with a super-villain several years back, but when she hears a cry in a back alley, she comes to the rescue and gets introduced to Mish Mosh, Bluejay, and Pysychopomp. Team Tiny get formed and they are off to save the world. And a strange saved it turned out to be as it involves dueling heroes and villains, giant, super-intelligent spiders, criminal gangs, spandex, and the birth of a criminal enterprise. And Irene had fun most of the time! Another good read from Richard Roberts!

That yawn travelled around until it finally returned at the end of the book. What a trip. Living with Gumluck is Butterscotch the ghost and Helvetica the raven. Helvetica was hunting for a place to build a nest safely for her eggs. But her chosen location involved her with a dragon, several contests, a nasty prince and a butler. A fun read for all ages with plenty of illustrations that help set the mood of the story.

Alyiakal has only a few weeks to close the post before a morass takes over the post location. He barely manages that despite opposition from the local Imperial Tax enumerator. Then he has some accrued leave that he spends visiting Saelora, a female Merchanter he knows before traveling to Lhaaarat as deputy post commander. At Lhaarat, he extends the reach of the Mirror Lancers patrols while trying to learn who and what is raiding the settlements in their post area. If you have been following the Recluce saga, you know what you are likely to find - competent characters learning how to influence their surroundings with plenty of descriptions of food and character interactions. It will be interesting to see what hoops Modesitt has Alyiakal jump through in the next volume. A satisfying entry in the Recluce series!

Some are set in universes Naomi Novik has already written in (Scholomance, Temeraire, or Spinning Silver) while others are tales written for various anthologies or to scratch a particular itch Novik had. The stories range from alternate world historical fiction with a retelling of Pride and Prejudice but this time with dragons to a fairy tale spun awry. There is an ecological sci-fi tale and a Sherlock Holme vignette. Then there is a retelling of sorts of the Age of Exploration but in a fantasy setting. Each tale has a bit of an introduction that helps to provide context. In all a very satisfying read.

I mean the men who in the early 1800's who ventured west from St. Louis (MO) to trap beavers for their pelts. Men such as Jim Bridger lauded by Johnny Horton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SmZy...) among others. But among this company of men, Jedediah Smith stands out. He stands out for his bravery, his fortitude, his knowledge and his honesty. Throne of Grace is his story told in the context of history.
Jedediah Smith arrived in St. Louis (MO) in 1822, having grown up along Lake Eire in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He joined General William Henry Ashley's fur trading expedition, and headed west up the Missouri River to explore. But that expedition encountered trouble partway up the river with Madan Indians. But the fighting he encountered did not deter Smith. Nor did the hardships of winter weather in the Rocky Mountains, the close encounters with hostile forces (Native Americans, Spanish, or British), or dangerous animals which included a very close encounter with a grizzly bear. Due to his bravery, common sense, and leadership, Jedediah Smith rose from being one of Ashley's men to a partner in charge in the Rocky Mountain area. H set up rendezvous points in the spring for the mountain men to gather and trade their pelts for supplies. He also led expeditions that opened up large sections of the West to settlers traveling to Oregon and California. He was know for mapping everything he encountered and kept multiple journals documenting his finds. He kept this up until he decided to retire. But he went on one last venture with his brothers leading a wagon train to Santa Fe when he had a fatal encounter with Comanches.
Bob Drury and Tom Clavin did a masterful job of documenting the life of Jedediah Smith in the context of his time using his journals and other sources to pain a picture of the West in 1820's in all its gore and glory. Take the time to read a tale of a true Western adventure!
