It focuses is on a woman who lives the tragic events of the time in China and goes through many sufferings and personal tragedies. We learn her story through the eyes of three men who meet her, are interested in her, each one influences her in his own way and in the end they carry her memory in them forever, to the other world. Each of them is different and so different is the perception they have of our heroine, which our author presents, thus composing an interesting narrative that, although not always focused on it, is complete and complex, enough that through her life to highlight important aspects of an entire era. Of course, many times the different narratives, which are not limited to the three main narrators, create confusion, sometimes we get away from the road and several times there was a distancing, but for the most part, the author focuses on the essence and creates some very good literary moments that move the reader and are the ones that stay in the end. A very good book.
In the description of the book, there are many baits, World War II, secrets of the past and reference to the famous The Nightingale. Common things we In the description of the book, there are many baits, World War II, secrets of the past and reference to the famous The Nightingale. Common things we find in many books nowadays but I imagine no one was hurt by another World War II novel. Of course, on the other hand, whether it offers more than one interesting and moving story is a question. What is certain is that it is a fairly good book that sheds light on a relatively unknown aspect of history and shows us the moral dilemmas posed by the German occupation and the resistance to it, and were reinforced when personal reasons made things more complicated. To all this, we add love and a dose of adventure to complete the image that I personally think is satisfactory. However, I feel that something is missing, some intensity, a little attention to detail, a little more complex characters, a little more courage and experimentation, in general, something that would make this book really stand out a little more.
I started reading this book as part of my search for different novels about World War II, and as long as it promised a French scent it was my priorityI started reading this book as part of my search for different novels about World War II, and as long as it promised a French scent it was my priority for a long time. Of course, I can not say that there was a very obvious difference in relation to them from the English-speaking world, something that is reinforced by its very common form with the parallel telling of a story from the time of the war and a current one that is directly related to it. But always, what sets a book apart is the way the author manages to handle his subject and the author of the book is excellent at it. The story of the war concerns the deportation of thousands of French Jews to death camps, with the cooperation of the French authorities, which is a stigma in French history that many would like to forget. This is the object of the modern story, where an American woman tries to tell this story, an attempt that meets the anger and indifference of the French. The way the author intertwines these two stories is extraordinary and boldly highlights this bitter truth of the French indifference to the Jews during World War II but also the current indifference to the emergence of this story that many believe to be better to hide it. Putting an American woman in the spotlight, that is, a woman who watches all this from the outside ensures a distance but also a look that can better emphasize these weaknesses of the French. So the result is much more than a telling of a moving story, it is a strong and sharp commentary on this ugly piece of French history, given in a way that does not try to pressure the reader, who has a dose of humour to break the heavy atmosphere and of course excellent writing that adds literary value. So, in the end, I can say that in this book I found this different one that I was looking for and I recommend it to anyone who wants something that stands out from the pile of historical novels about the Second World War that are circulating today.
