Of course these different groups in the end have a different perception of the events that determined the historical course of the region and the author very wisely presents these views to us without his own intervention. Within the many pages of the book passes a multitude of different characters, all of them special in their own way, and their interaction forms a wonderful story, with many twists and messages of perseverance, which the author tells in a way that only truly great authors can. pass to the written word. A true model family saga that overcomes the limitations of the genre to reach true heights of literary value and offer brave readers who will not be intimidated by its size many exciting and moving hours.

I usually read very slowly those books that I don't like but for some reason I think I should finish them. In this book, or rather in these four booksI usually read very slowly those books that I don't like but for some reason I think I should finish them. In this book, or rather in these four books, it was just the opposite, I loved what I was reading, so much I enjoyed the unique way of writing that I tried to read them only under the most ideal conditions, in the indolent summer noons, accompanied by the appropriate music of the east, at a pace that maximizes this enjoyment. I couldn't avoid it, Lawrence Durrell's writing really captivated me from the first words of the first book, and that fascination lasted until the end. It's so beautiful, so poetic, so well-structured, so rich, it has such an ability to create images and convey thoughts and feelings that I really can't describe the wonderful feeling it created for me. With it as a guide we stroll through the wonderful city of Alexandria, live the sensuality of the orient at the pace dictated by the hot sun of Egypt, we see this mix of cultures represented by its old and new inhabitants coming from Europe and in the end we are watching the important world developments that could not but affect a city that has always enjoyed the mysterious.
As for the story the author tells us, it may not matter so much, we do not follow it in any logical order but in a confused and indefinable way, going from beginning to end and at various stages of the story almost by accident, following the author's thoughts. So we watch the various characters in different episodes of their lives, in their big and small moments, in their thoughts and emotions, in everything that reveals how they experience with the body and soul what the city of Alexandria offers them. All of these characters have something unique and special, and this combination of their stories creates a result that sums up the charm of that time, as the author perceived it.
Four wonderful books that offer a particularly beautiful literary journey that my poor abilities are probably not enough to describe in a way that suits it. Perhaps in some of my next visits to this unique work, I can add something more, until then all I can say is that it is a collection of books that must be read by all who enjoy the true essence of literature.

Finally, this moment arrived anI wanted to read this book for a long time as I knew it was considered one of the best novels for the First World War. Finally, this moment arrived and the first thing I can say is that I'm sorry it did not come earlier. This is a book that I highly appreciated from his first page and until the end, it offered me a lot. Its writing style is particularly beautiful and emotional, with the author showing the necessary self-restraint to produce an elegant result, without exaggeration and unnecessary sentimentality. with this as a vehicle, he tells us a very moving story, with some of the very distinct and complete characters that the author moulds with mastery.
The story begins in France a few years before the start of the First World War, when the world still unsuspecting for the imminent disaster was looking at its work in a place that would be one of the focal points of the war. During this quiet time, a forbidden love blooms and evolves in a way that is very common, with passion dominating, leaving logic aside. Whatever this evolution is, however, the important is that is something beautiful, as long as it last, and this beauty the author gives us as a gift, wrapping it in the most elegant way.
Then, then, war comes and things are completely different. The two lovers, like a whole generation, change as they are injured by its consequences. Our hero participates in some of the toughest and bloodiest battles of the war and he sees all his barbarity, as people die as they walk towards the machine guns under a rain of shells, the result being nil as the trench war has brought a stalemate. Next to him are his co-warriors who also witness this situation and wonder if there is any point in all of this. Everyone reacts differently, others lose their logic, others pretend to do just a job that will soon end and they will return home, others try to use their patriotic feelings and hate for the enemy to find a balance, but everyone is convinced that something is wrong, that things are not as they said, and that the notions of heroism, duty and sacrifice make no sense in this slaughterhouse. The only positive thing in this hell is that all this brutality and the constant threat of death unite them and forge the most powerful friendships that offer the only consolation.
That's what I think is the best part of the book, as the writer, without trying to do philosophy, puts his simple thoughts through the characters he creates, and because these characters have a truth on them, each representing different pieces of society, these thoughts have something special and carry to the reader all the trauma created by the war, with disappointment and resignation dominating as the memories of peaceful life seemed very distant.
After all this, the author takes us many years later, at a time when that great war is almost forgotten. There the story closes its cycle, as the granddaughter of the lovers tries to learn more and so she becomes part of the story and its continuity and so in a way the author shows us what is the meaning of all of this, leaving us with something optimistic.
A really wonderful book that definitely has a place in the classics of the genre, next to the more well-known masterpieces. Above all, however, it gains a special place in my heart.

Of course thWith this book Jane Austin made her entry into British literature, an entry that, as we know, made a very strong impression at that time. Of course this was no accident at all, as it tells one of the most beautiful stories ever written, a story full of sense and sensitivity.
This story concerns two sisters who have a completely different perception of life. The first one, the older, lives on the basis of logic, calculates every act, observes her behavior by hiding her feelings, treats situations calmly, and objectively judges people weighing their pros and cons. The other, the younger and most sensitive, lives with emotion, always reacts spontaneously without much thinking, has strong emotional reactions and judges people based on the first subjective impressions.
At the beginning of our story, the two sisters fall in love and as expected have completely different reactions. The older thinks coolly, objectively analyzes the spiritual gifts of her beloved, judges his weaknesses and tries to understand his feelings for her doubting If it's more than friendly. The younger one carried away by her feelings, she finds her lover perfect, she is totally convinced that he feels the same emotions and she is sure she lives the great love that only once comes to everyone's life. In the process, however, they will understand through difficult experiences both - especially the smallest - that things are not so and that the ideal road to happiness is somewhere in the middle. But that does not change is the relationship between them that overflows with tenderness which the author describes in the most emotional way.
All this happens with the background of the life of the gentry, which the writer criticizes and satires without mercy with her unique way of writing. Its main target are the ladies who have nothing more to do than to gossip and mix in the lives of others, the misses who while having the means neglect their education and their only goal of their lives is to marry rich, the empty-headed men who do not deal with nothing essential, young people who care only for their well-being without regard for the consequences. In the end, however, the things that remain are the positive examples, those people who have principles and walk with them whatever the price, those people who know how to love and care for their fellow men without asking for rewards.
Of course all this is given to us by this great writer in a way that does not fit descriptions. It's amazing this way of writing, really every phrase is enjoyable, each paragraph is perfectly structured, its whole word is running smoothly like water. It is be unique the way that goes from humor to emotion, from social critique to human emotions, in a few lines. This writing in the end is giving the greatest value to this book and in combination with the ideas from her beautiful mind a masterpiece is created that rightfully holds a place in the best books ever written.

From the first tiMy opinion is that this series of books is the best ever written in the field of high fantasy after Tolkien's great works of course. From the first time I read it, it made me such a good impression that I'm used to read it again and again so I can relive all the feelings that caused me. For this opinion I can argue quite a lot, but I think the best proof is this book. I do not know where to begin to describe his virtues. From its direct connection with the past of the genre? From the incredible depth of the imaginary world created by the writer and it is slowly unfolded in front of us? From the amazing characters that introduce to us and then he is merging in their psychology, showing us their fears and their hopes? From the way it is narating a breathtaking adventure? From the thoughts and reflections on various issues that are scattered throughout the book? From the excellent writing that combines the epic element with humor and emotion? Everything seems to be exactly as it should and be combined in the ideal way to create an excellent example of fantasy.
From the beginning the writer grabs you and puts you in his world with a hi staggering introduction that gives the tone of the epic battle of the good with the evil that dominates the whole series and prepares us for the greatness that will follow. The next part that is essentially the beginning of the story is purely Tolkienic. We find our heroes living in an idyllic village where nothing strange is happening and people are ignoring what is happening in the rest of the world and of course they have no idea of the evil that comes, though the signs are everywhere around them. From here, our young heroes start reluctantly their journey without knowing what their fate reserves and how altered they will come back - if they ever return. But quickly, through many adventures, they take the baptism of fire and accept the role they need to play in the salvation of the world. This acceptance fills them with terror as they understand the tremendous difficulties they have to face and the power of the enemy, but fills them also with determination, even with pride for what they have to do.
All this in a book that is an ideal start for a fantasy series, stirring the reader's interest in reading the sequel, but at the same time is also a complete work with a beginning, middle and end which in itself is of great value. An adventurous story that does not based on violence that targets young people but does not end up becoming childish, epic on scale without the author reaching out to exaggeration. The beginning of a work that has stood in the past, with strong references from Tolkien but also by later writers, but at the same time led the field of high fantasy to other levels by introducing elements that we encounter in any high fantasy work written ever since, bringing the genre to foreground. A real masterpiece that has to read it - if it has not already done - everyone who has even the least interest in fantastic literature.

In fact, of course, this rarely happens and usually such an erotic story begins with hesitation, continues with moments of embarrassment, and when things get to bed, things are often difficult. Such a realistic story of a couple in the early 60's that due to their conservative upbringing, shyness (especially of the woman) and their ignorance ... have difficulties the author is narrating us using few pages that are enough to tell it in its own very beautiful way.
As for the moral lesson, the question that arises is what exactly a relationship is. Is sex so important that it determines whether there is real love? Can two people with different needs and different perception be together? Can Mozart got along with Chuck Berry? In the end how much patience and how much adaptability can we show to be with someone? And if we show them to the utmost extent we only building a lie that is at the crucial moment will be revealed? Of course there are no easy answers to all of this.
Usually I'm not really moved by love stories, but here I can say that there was an exception because this tender story of this immature couple narrated with such simplicity won me completely, filling me with beautiful emotions, while the end moved me to the maximum degree. So I can not put a lower rating than the top.
...more

How can you write a cool review of a book that you reI wanted to write a cool and... academic review of this book but it's impossible for me anymore. How can you write a cool review of a book that you read the last 100 pages of trying to hold back tears? I don't know what to say exactly, it moved me so much, it troubled me, it filled me with sadness for what man is capable of doing to man, but in the end, it also gave me hope by showing the power of love and kindness in the worst moments of history. For all this, I not only recommend it but consider it a must-read book.
The book's subject is World War II, not the "official" battlefields but the equally difficult battlefields of occupied France, where the battle was more complex. You see in the "official battlefields things were simple: the enemy was in front of you, the friend beside you, it was evident what you had to do - to kill - and there were some rules that the enemy recognized. In the occupied territories, however, things were rarely simple. There you did not distinguish the enemy from the friend, you did not know exactly what to do and what not to do, the enemy did not recognize rules and on top of that you faced daily heavy moral dilemmas and you made terribly difficult decisions whose consequences left scars on your soul.
In this setting, we follow the path of two women through these hard years. One chooses the path of resistance, thus wanting to find her place in the world, the other - her older sister - simply tries to survive and save her daughter's life, helping anyone else she can. Seemingly two opposite paths but along the way it turns out that they are not so different, that they were equally difficult and could cause great pain in the end. Both required seeming submission to the conqueror, privation, effort, danger, and a life of constant fear, but in the end, they led to beneficial results. But the way all this is presented in the book has nothing to do with the search for the heroic and "strong" element as we usually find in such works, instead the resistance - active or passive - is presented as a work of love. The driving force of the two sisters is love, it pushes them, it makes them find strength, it makes them overcome their wounds. That is why what dominates the pages of the book is sensitivity, not rage and anger at the barbarities of the Nazis. The horror of course exists, the terrible people were and still are next to us and they will certainly repeat the same story over and over again, but there will always be people with noble feelings and sensitivities. In the darkest night a nightingale will sing.

I had heard the best words for this series of books but I hesitated to deal with it because some reviews presented it as a series of "women's" books without substance. After much thought - and after seeing the last book appear on the Booker Prize list - I decided to take the risk to start reading and I think I finally made the right choice.
From the very first pages, this first part captivated me so much that I couldn't leave it. This tender story of friendship and coming to adulthood in a Naples slum in the 1950s created in me a feeling similar to the one that some of Tornatore's favorite films gave me, so you can understand for what levels of emotion I'm talking about. But the good thing is that all this emotion is built on a very realistic basis. The author is not trying to beautify situations or talk about good old times. The book's slum is a particularly cruel place where violence - especially against women - is a key element of everyday life and dreams are crushed by the burden of poverty and misery, a place where girls try to taste some drops of happiness and boys a few moments of pride until they get back to their jobs.
Even the friendship that is the core of the book is anything but ideal. There is love, there are mutual support and interest but there always seems to be an invisible wall between them. The narrator describes her girlfriend as a distinct creature, a girl so special, passionate about life, who is intensely searching for her happiness. She has endless love for her, many times admires her and has her role model, but there are times when she questions her friendship, who feels jealous, even reaching the point to see her as an obstacle to her development. But that does not prevent their friendship from being true and special.
In a nutshell, this is a really great book worthy to overcome your prejudices about it. It's definitely romantic and moving but nothing "light" and easy you will find on its pages.

After these days of reading this wonderful story of these four lovable women, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood, surrounded by equally wonderful people, I am filled with such intense emotions that it is really difficult to express them with words. All this love that floods every page as we watch all this goodness and tenderness that unites these four heroines as they illuminate the world around them, all this optimistic glance at the beautiful but also difficult life, all this poetry of everyday life, it really makes you lose yourself in a world that has all the beauty we lack. I think it is one of the most beautiful, emotionally rich and important books ever written, a book we should all feel very happy to have found someone to write it 150 years ago.
Apart from these, the book stands out for two more reasons. The first is that all this feeling, the emotionality offered is given without pressure, and in an effortless way, without literary exaggeration and sophisticated language, without the author enforcing this feeling through writing or plot. The second is that while it is clear that the author's intention is to talk about certain things, to suggest a way of thinking and behaving, she does so without a preaching attitude, passing her message on improvement through the prism of love which gives the best motivation to become better and that's what offers some of the book's most moving moments. So this great creation has a balance and, ultimately, a utility when read by younger ones that are still building their character. For this it is an ideal youth reading that, however, is a good idea for older people not to forget.

In the third part of this epic series the desolation we have been expecting has already begun, although it does not exactly is what our heroes thoughtIn the third part of this epic series the desolation we have been expecting has already begun, although it does not exactly is what our heroes thought it would be. Things seem to be more complicated than a battle of good vs evil as they understand that there are many gray zones. Through the constant revelations and developments that they witnesses they realise that there are many different factions with different motives and aspirations. But what remains stable is the perception that the future of the world will be judged by their own actions.
With so much pressure, our heroes are even more confronted with their inner demons trying to find themselves and understand the role they have to play. Their enemies are the ghosts of the past that come to reopen the wounds they thought they had left behind. In the end, however, they have no choice but to deal with them. In this context, the flashbacks of this book are about Dalinar and convey to us the tragic events that shaped him and lead us to reflections on war and the justification of violence to achieve a higher purpose, but also on if one can leave his sins behind and become a better person.
All this in a book that begins without the fast-paced action of the two previous but leaves much room for the author to deepen the characters and create some very moving scenes and put a lot of themes on the table (from the value of the political processes to the acceptance of the homosexuality). From the middle of the book, all hell brakes loose and the narrative speeds up as evil moves through a series of aggressive actions that corner our heroes and lead to epic battles where Sanderson is giving us, as usual, a very exciting result that is the crowning of a great book. After that as an epilogue comes a fairly traditional end.
So what's left to say? Once again Brandon Sanderson surpasses himself and offers us another work that make history in the field of epic fantasy. That's why I put it a 5 and I'm waiting for the next part of this series, which I'm sure will come on time....more
