Kate's aggressive behavior issues bothered me. Yes, I understand it would be difficult to be a female Chief of Police in a profession dominated by males. In the end, I went with 4* because the Amish background was very interesting, the writing was not in the least bit juvenile (important to me), and, overall, it was a good book. I even ordered copies of the next two books in the series :-) ...more

Not only well-written, but the topics of the dust bowl and migration of people to CA during the Great Depression was riveting. Experiencing hardship, deprivation, and exploitation by CA farmers, the migrating characters imagined by Kristin Hannah are endearing and incredibly, painfully memorable. The Four Winds will stick with me for years to come, and should I start forgetting it in my waning years, I've kept my copy to re-read :-) ...more

I tired, at times, of the slow, descriptive pages, but recognize their importance in setting the stage. By the end of the book, I had come to the realization that I did not, do not like Shardlake. He sets himself on a single-minded mission and draws his colleagues in for execution of his plans without ever considering that his quest is putting their lives in danger. I realize he and Barak are fictitious, but I state, without reservation, that Barak is a better man than Shardlake!!! I have one more tome to finish: Tombland. I really want to finish this series and be done with it. Yet I must admit I've learned a treasure trove about the reign of Henry VIII and England of that era....more

I was glued to it all day (the dirty dishes can wait :-) I've read other EMP books, but this one takes the cake. Unlike the other books, the author of Turbulent delves into how the EMP affected the lives over VERY likeable characters (and some very UNlikeable characters). I feel like many of the likeable characters are family; that's how engrossed I was in the story. I'm off to order the rest of the series....more
