I can’t believe I gave this book two-stars at one point. What was I thinking? It certainly isn’t the best book I’ve read in my life, but it’s certainly not a two-star book either. Regardless, I’m really happy I gave Looking for Alaska a second chance; it deserved it.
Apparently, the first time I read this I thought the plot was “boring.” And while I could see why I said that years ago or why someone might say that today, because nothing huge happens — it’s just a bunch of friends being mischievous — the characters, their backstories, and how they heal with one another is what makes this book great. Well, almost great.
What didn’t hit the mark for me was Alaska’s role. I didn’t understand the appeal that surrounded her. Frankly, I thought she was immature and crazy, which I guess she was. What did, however, make me care more for her was seeing the impact she had on others. It made me realize how even though she didn’t necessarily make an impact on me, it didn’t mean others felt the same. Apparently everyone was moved by her. I found that hard to believe, but alas, I digress.
Overall, this is why I give books second chances, because sometimes we read a book and hate it, only to re-read it later on and realize that we’d just read it at the wrong moment in our lives. This happened to be my case with Looking for Alaska. And while I don’t think it’s deserving of five stars as many rate it, I think the relatable, quirky characters and quick moving plot add to its touching storyline....more
I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Really unique and interesting read!I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Really unique and interesting read!...more
It was better than the first time I read it! I really enjoyed each of their stories - Carmen's would have to be my favorite. However, Bridget 4 Stars!
It was better than the first time I read it! I really enjoyed each of their stories - Carmen's would have to be my favorite. However, Bridget and Lena are probably my favorite characters. My only complaint has to be how at some points the writing seemed clunky. Not only that, but sometimes the characters would say things that could've been said in a clearer way ... and those minor details sort-of unnerved me. Also, Lena's "romance" with Kostos seemed a little too quick. They hardly talked to one another, and then right before she leaves back home she suddenly realizes she loves him? Hm. I didn't really like that. But Lena is cool, either way.
