Not a stand alone that calls for a sequel. But half a story.
That said, I really enjoyed it! It reminded me of the McKinley I loved growing up. And the pacing is spectacular! Things don't always have to move quickly. Sometimes, it's much better to let them build.
Anyway. Guess I won't have more fully formed thoughts until the next one, but I do recommend this, half the story or not!...more

This book was a bit plottier than others I've read of hers and you get to see a different glimpse of society, but still had all the Heyer characteristics I like: Fun, romance, witty dialogue, etc! Also, one of the things I appreciate about her is she's one of those authors who often has a secondary romance in addition to the primary one. That tends to add something to the story for me....more

Oh, and I I liked a lot of this book, but I also thought there was too much exposition and it took too long before things started actually happening. Oh, and I never got a firm grip on the conspiracy plot.
BUT. I will say, as someone who's not a fan of zombies, I liked how they were dealt with here. And not just the zombies, but how the world responded because of them (this is set twenty years after the zombies appeared).
And I think---trying not to spoil here!--the story went where it needed to go, which I wasn't sure it would.
Anyway. This is the first book in a trilogy (I believe a trilogy?) and I kind of want to know what happens next, but I'm not sure I want to know enough to actually read the next books....more

And I liked that it portrayed a forced marriage that was just never going to be a love match. That's not something I can remember seeing in fiction before (at least, not as a focus), but it has to be the way these things most often went in real life.
And I liked that Pen ultimately got a love story perfectly suited to who she is....more

That would've made it a stronger book for me....more
