It didn’t hurt that I have fond memories of those woods from time spent at a summer camp there as a child, so I can easily imagine people falling under their spell. I confess to having grown frustrated with one of the themes early on, but am glad I stuck with it for the author resolved it quite neatly. I confess to being as pessimistic as Daniel Mason at times, and also stuck with the annoying ability to see something at once as it was and how it will be, but ultimately tend to be more optimistic than he is. Oh Mr. McBride, you have done it again. Maybe your only fault is that you have not written enough, but I don't know that there will ever be enough of Oh Mr. McBride, you have done it again. Maybe your only fault is that you have not written enough, but I don't know that there will ever be enough of your writing to make me happy. Did I cry at the end of the book? Of course I did. But I also laughed, smiled and scowled through the rest of it. I love that McBride's writing captures a language and a cadence I knew in my youth, maybe one that not too many other people remember either. I love that he can take a large cast of characters and somehow they all become real in my mind, none of them two dimensional or trite.
