I have a tendency to word vomit but this is still so new and everyone deserves to (and should—no, must) experience it spoiler-free so I'll holdChrist.

I'll just post some of my favorite bits from this instead ...more
I'm going to just say..... I think this is a good story, but it is not a good romance.

To the point that I enjoyed the veterans' interactions more than the romance. I loved the Bitches.
Is there an undercurrent of love? Yes. But for me it read more like a healing story, and finding yourself after a traumatic event.
Which brings me to my next issue. This......didn't read like a double bi-awakening either. Brandt was very much into West from the jump. And West may or may not have been aware of it but he was also not very platonic with Brandt prior to the event.
These men were making eye contact while jerking off less than 6% into the book. But to be fair it's the first time either of them acts on it with another man so maybe that counts.
I like a bit of give and take in my romance, and while I agree that West needed a lot of healing and Brandt was the greenest of flags in being there for him, it was at the expense of Brandt's own wellness.
More than once, he had to put aside his own pain to cater to West's. It was a recurrent thing. He doesn't get to process his own trauma, a lot of which is directly due to West. The number of times he had to freak out over foiling yet another suicide attempt. Only to have to do it again a few days later.
But for Brandt, it was always West first. No matter what.
"I don’t know who I am anymore.” “I know who you are."
“Three legs, huh? Can’t fall with three legs.” “We’re a fucking tripod, baby. We’re never gonna fall, and we’re never gonna lose our way.”
“Don’t forget, just because I’m not with you doesn’t mean you don’t have my legs.”
That said, whichever way I choose to look at it, Brandt was very willing to do whatever it took for West. So at least it had unconditional unwavering devotion.
This book is very 'I'll hold us both up until you're able to stand on your own, and then I'll stand with you.'
I........don't know if I want these two together. I mean, I get why Kirill is the way he is, and why he does the things he does, but I can't help wantI........don't know if I want these two together. I mean, I get why Kirill is the way he is, and why he does the things he does, but I can't help wanting more for Yarik.
But also. I get why Yarik keeps holding on. Because for every one shitty thing Kirill says....
'Better alive and miserable than happy and dead.' (And we know he means this shit because his actions confirm it)
There's three cute things waiting in the wings to numb the pain and resurrect the hope. He doesn't intend it, but Kirill can be the cutest.
*Yarik: Well, you know everything about me. *Deleted Kirill Text: That’s because you never stop talking. You don’t even give me a chance to breathe before your brain’s flitting off to another topic. I could list off a thousand things that I know about you and there’d still be another thousand that I could mention. IS THIS NOT THE CUTEST?! ...more
Not this man threatening that Reuben only gets one chance at him AFTER having given him three chances before AND in the midst of giving him a fourth. Not this man threatening that Reuben only gets one chance at him AFTER having given him three chances before AND in the midst of giving him a fourth. Horrendously down bad.
I love when someone's conscience won't let them rest. 'I’d never pass up the chance to have Cameron Wano in my arms or under my lips. Unless it’s in public, something deep inside mocked.'
Whack him for me!
There's this thing Reuben does. Where he fucks up in a colossal fashion but acts more broken up about it than Cam, so that Cam ends up feeling bad because Reuben feels bad and cuts him slack. I can't emphasize how manipulative I find it.
'I hate that I'm hurting you.' Then don't. The fuck?
Yeah so, I don't think I like this pairing. When they met, Cam was this confident man who knew what he wanted and was uncompromising about it. 63% in and he's filled with self doubt, bitterness and he's rationalizing away all the compromises he's having to make just to make this work. And they've only been together a few weeks ...more
Oh, look! A book to finally add to my 'Pain' shelf. This was like putting my heart in a blender. Yum.
I don't get it when in epic romances, something hOh, look! A book to finally add to my 'Pain' shelf. This was like putting my heart in a blender. Yum.
I don't get it when in epic romances, something happens and A pushes B away because he can't ask him to wait. Am I just incredibly selfish? Not only would I ask that you wait, I'd sort of expect you to do it??? Does love mean nothing anymore? We used to be a society.
They weren't even that old. It wasn't an unreasonable ask.
ANYWAY. In the beginning, I LOVED Zed so much. By the middle, I LOVED Caspian so much. These two are so fucking adorable with each other. And they don't lose that with themselves, even though they really get put through the wringer. Yeeish.
The hits start coming pretty early on in the book and they just DON'T STOP COMING. So many times I wanted to ask the author if they knew these are just my sweet little baby boys????
Adults have gone through less than these boys. This is a beautifully heartbreaking romance. The HEA is so hard won. I was so traumatized that 95% in, I STILL expected some shit to happen.
I want no sequels for them. I've read The Long Game. I know what happens in sequels. Let them rest. Please, please let them rest....more
