I realize now that Evangeline reminds me of the way I used to be, contrasted with how bitter the world's ugliness has made me. It has reminded me that it is okay to hope, to look for the best in people. To enjoy my softness instead of guarding it with spires and steel walls. To remember joy.
For that reason, I loved this book. And the twist had me reeling for once....more

I'm super conflicted about this one. We don't have enough FMCs these days who retain their femininity, and I absolutely adore that about these books. I'm super conflicted about this one. We don't have enough FMCs these days who retain their femininity, and I absolutely adore that about these books. That Evangeline never sacrifices her feminine traits to become hateful and murderous like a man. Instead, she's willing to be kind, to forgive. For me, that gives this book so much esteem.
Otherwise, this book feels like if Valentines Day and Candyland had a baby, and I'm still not sure how to feel about that because it's a little sugary sweet at times. I still think it's wonderful to bring back this sort of whimsical magic though.
The reason this got three stars for me because I needed a little more from the story. There was a lot of potential between her and Jack's but didn't get all the way there. A touch of real danger or harm would have gone a long way to making me feel something towards the stakes of the plot, too. I'll definitley read the next book with high hopes!...more
