I am tremendously hyped for Spider-Man 2 on the PS5. I think it’s the most I’ve been excited for a game since Arkham City.
As I officially finished my time in New York (for now), successfully defended my thesis, and relish a new period in my life, Hostile Takeover was a perfect and gripping read.
It’s Spider-Man at his best—New York is beautifully detailed and accurate. It definitely gets the seal of approval for an authentic, relatable NYC tale. MJ and Peter have a romantic drama that pulls at your heartstrings. I got the "oh no… I’ve gotten THAT text before" feeling in the best way possible. Overall, if you’re a Spidey fan who wants to hype up Spider-Man 2 even more, you’re gonna love this book. It’s another amazing drama featuring everyone's favorite wall-crawler. The book has familiar characters, but also creates new ones. Still, it never feels crowded. In fact, it's a great, small-scale story of what New York was like before the events of the original PS4 game. If you want to remember why 2018 was likely the best year ever for Spidey, this is the book for you. Oh, and it is pretty cool how 2023 is kind of the follow-up to that. Seriously. Another PlayStation game AND another Spider-Verse? Heck yeah. I was a big fan of this, and I’m happy I'm a big fan of this. It made me happy to be alive.
Now… excuse me while I apply for jobs while I create a new save file for Spider-Man....more

It was a perfect read during a time I felt more like Peter Parker than I ever have in my life. Living in New York, exploring the city while trying to do the right thing, and (maybe most importantly) girl drama like I’ve never felt before—if this doesn’t say Peter Parker, I don’t know what does. I even dressed up as Spider-Man for Halloween and (finally) played Spider-Man on the PS4. Living in New York while playing a game set in the most accurate map of Manhattan in any video game was such a surreal and amazing experience.
Funny enough, I’m probably less into superheroes now than I’ve been in a long time. But I still find myself hanging by a thread to Spider-Man. Granted, it’s kind of impossible not to be into Spider-Man while in New York. But still. I think it’s because of something Marvel’s Nick Lowe told me during my internship with Marvel: “Don’t pitch me a story about Spider-Man versus Hammerhead, pitch me a story about heartbreak.” And I think that’s why I still pull towards the ol’ Web-Head.
A threat against the multiverse never makes me feel anything anymore. But a young man’s heart breaking executed in a confusing and straining way… well… it doesn’t get better than that. Superheroes magnify the messages in their narrative. So a run-of-the-mill, action-packed adventure will always seem exponentially more formulaic and honestly… boring. But… a painful and emotional drama involving the stress of being low-income college student, while also falling in love with someone who may not like you and then another girl you don’t notice is super into you, and balancing a social life with a selfless and giving one… that’s also exponentially magnified. If that run-on sentence was exhausting to read, then I accurately captured the tone and pacing of a good Spider-Man story… and a great New York story....more

(New Review From Jan 17, 2024 - 2nd Read)
I read this story originally in high school. I think I reread it at the perfect time, now that I’m back from New York and done with grad school. In a major way, it felt like coming back to Smallville.
This is still the best Lana Lang comic I’ve come across. When I first read this, it was during a time when I was living the life in Miami, I had a lot of friends at my disposal, and I absolutely believed in doing the right thing. I was full of so much hope, willing to believe that anything is possible if love is on your side.
When Luthor outsmarts Superman by playing dirty, it demotivates Clark from being Superman and doing all he can for the world, which causes him to return home to his parents. And coincidentally, it’s when Lana Lang finally comes back to town too. Their reunion was foreshadowed the whole story, and it’s really so special. Lana just wanted Clark to want her so they could start a family and be happy there forever. But his telling her that he’s Superman ruined her dream. He told her that he wanted to help people, essentially telling her that he loved doing the right thing more than he loved her.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can relate to Clark. A lot. Definitely more than any other superhero, and this story reminded me of that. Although I felt a lot like Peter Parker while living in New York, I have always been Clark Kent. I am constantly upholding my values over anything else, like honesty, faith, and more than anything—love. Superman represents love more than any other hero. He feels lonely because he wants someone who can keep up with his values. Unfortunately, that wasn’t Lana. She ran away from Smallville broken-hearted. She said she didn’t even pay attention to what Clark said when he told her his secret. All she knew was that is wasn’t just going to be her and Clark anymore. But Clark knew it was never going to be him and her. It was always going to be him and everyone.
Lois is absolutely more Superman's speed. She’s someone who’s mature enough to understand what doing the right thing means. Lois says it herself; she thinks Superman is "too good to be true." Someone like Lois can understand why people need to do all the things Superman does. She thinks he's "too good to be true," which is exactly how a good person would react to someone like Superman. Really imagine if someone on this world had Superman's powers. Media now would have you believe that they’d be like Homelander or Omni-Man. That only makes this story age better. Men can still be good, which is worth believing in something. It’s encouraging. I know I’d be Superman if I had Clark's powers. And that makes me proud of myself.
Lana finally understands why Clark does what he does by their reunion, she just needed to mature more. And although their paths crossed briefly again, they’d now have to continue on separate paths again. But with one final kiss, she nonverbally told Clark she gets it now. She gets why he helps others after seeing so much of the world. She understands how one man could sacrifice so much to help others because she knew Clark. She’ll always love Clark, and I think Clark will always love her too.
Rereading this story was perfect at the point I’m at now. I’ve gained some friendships, rekindled others, and unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to some. Maybe some of those old friends see me as their enemy now. They wanted to play dirty, and I didn’t. But… I do know that I can never waiver with my values and dreams. My determination should always be strong, even when I fail. I can get discouraged sometimes, and I can feel drained when the weight of the world brings down. But I should never forget who I am, why I want to help people, and why love is the most important thing. Never lose hope. Be inspired to be good. A good Superman story always leaves me feeling uplifted.
This has to be one of Superman's greatest stories. It reminds me a lot of Superman: The Animates Series. It reminds me a lot of the introspection Clark faces, how he'a a person who goes to his family for wisdom, and feels grateful he has places to seek solitude. It reminds me a lot of me when I go through phases of discouragement. But helping someone will always help you too. Loving will always be worth it, even after heartbreak. I know these messages are what make Superman great. I hope James Gunn knows this too....more
