Most fantasy is light and fluffy, or at least written in a way that young boys would be attracted to it and mothers wouldn't bar them from reading it. This is not that. This is a book written for an adult audience. This is written in the same vein as popular modern military novels, or CIA terrorism adventure stories. This is a gritty fantasy novel, but not obscene. Be prepared.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel. I liked the characters, loved the storyline, I thought the dialogue was smooth and easy to follow. Like any first novel it seemed raw in a few places, but not enough to stop my reading. I have a group of gaming friends I would specifically recommend this book to.
If you play D&D (any version) and enjoy reading thrillers or adventure novels, you should think about buying this novel.
If you read all the TSR novels and thought, those were light and fluffy and wished for something darker and grittier, you should definitely give this a try.
If you are looking for cannon D&D materials, this is NOT the book for you. This is not an officially sanctioned D&D product. This doesn't cross the line into fan-fic so much as takes the elements that interest the author and writes a new novel building on 'non-copyrighted' elements. It is not a campaign re-hash. It's a fantasy novel that draws heavily from role-playing game elements we are all familiar with. There's a fine line here that the author seems to have trod very carefully. ...more

I am engrossed in the plot and enjoying the intrigues. There are characters I like and a few I hate. The writing is good, and the tropes that were slightly annoying in the first book are getting more interesting in this book. Dark epic fantasy...and I forget how it ends...although I keep remembering a few pages before I get to some of the main points.
I am glad that I have time to re-read one of the my favorite fantasy series from twenty years ago. ...more

My honest review is that I LOVED IT!
Okay, this is the first time I read a book, then stopped reading because I didn't want it to end. I loved the first few chapters. I loved the characters. I loved the settings. I loved the conflict. I didn't want it to end, so when a main character was obviously walking into the 'ending' moment. I set the book aside. I savored it. I thought about what I had read and I thought about what might happen next. I sat for several days with the unknowing and enjoyed the relationship I currently had with the characters.
When I was ready, I let those last 20 pages unwind around me and I was not disappointed. The characters interacted in a way that felt 'true', and although unexpected, the ending fit perfectly with the rest of the book! I loved the ending, then the second ending, and then I just sat and let the story sort of drift away.
This was a perfect book! I will be recommending it to everyone....more

2020 - I let kiddos pick which Seuss book we read this year and The Lorax was picked several times in the 18 class periods I read to over the week. Kids love it, and they are affected by it more than any other Dr. Seuss book I read. They walk away talking about it and they ask to check it out. I call that a success...and a classic....more

They picked this one...and oh, my, goodness...this is a hard book to read to littles. They lose interest and don't understand what is being said. I had never actually read this book before this week...and I think I will remove it from the possible selections next year. I think the kids were just as disappointed in it as I was. I love the book, the picture and the definitely the message...but it is not going to be a read-aloud for me unless I have the right group of kids. ...more

It is My 12 year old boys read this and loved it...and then were surprised when I told them that I totally thought it was about video game addiction. It is a good fluffy book for kids - and we can just leave it there...but...
This is a great way for teachers and parents to talk to kids about how addicting video games can be and how easy it is to let addiction ruin friendships, families and a persons health. The main character doesn't realize she has played all night, so then she sleeps through school, then lies to her best friend, and her parents...eventually she sees that she needs help, but is too afraid to ask for it because she would have to admit she lied and broke the rules. She forgets to do things she is supposed to do. She thinks the game world is more important than her own. Totally an addiction story! I loved it!
I also love it because there are a bunch of things in it that are not 'discussion points'...and yet so important. A mixed race family has nothing to do with the story. A friend named Eric who might be trans...which has absolutely nothing to to with the story. Using 'they/them/their' for a gender neutral character without any discussion of pronouns. So simple and so effective. Well done!...more
