The first 250 pages of this book…..pure perfection. The last 300 pages though…..I felt like I was in a fever dream. I didn’t like how there was nothing profound happening, yet I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to finish it. I think that says a lot about Donna Tartts writing. All of the characters were so fascinating to me. I truly feel like the book came full circle in a way?
The first sentence of chapter 1 is
“Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,' that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does. And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.”
I think we get a sense of each characters fatal flaw by the end of this book. This is one of those books that 100% deserves a reread. ...more

As someone who tried reading boy parts and couldn’t get into it, I had some hesitations while starting this book. However, I was completely surprised by how much I loved it and was genuinely in awe of Clark’s storytelling. I mean, this story really sounds like a real murder. Aside from that, I loved that the book had the atmosphere of the early 2010’s, where there was tumblr and the beginning of the social media age. Especially since I grew up in that time just like these girls were, it was fun to get swept up in that time again, but it does remind me of how brutal preteens and teens can be at those ages and I do not miss it. Clark does an amazing job bringing everything together and showing how messed up the true crime community can be profiting off of other peoples pain and suffering, and how narratives can easily be changed to bring more traction to a story. I’m so happy that this book proved me wrong and I’m excited for whatever Clark writes next!
Books like Pachinko are what make historical fiction so amazing. This novel is a multigenerational narrative of a Korean family living in 20th centuryBooks like Pachinko are what make historical fiction so amazing. This novel is a multigenerational narrative of a Korean family living in 20th century Japan. We see the hardships, racism, and suffering Koreans went through during this time, and sometimes it was hard to read. The women play a powerful role, especially Sunja, who sacrificed so much of herself to for her family. Aside from that, the women in this story have to deal with so much discrimination and have to bear the weight of a thousand expectations on their shoulders.
I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about Korea/Japan history, and I learned a lot from this book. The authors writing was simple and easy to read, which I considered perfect for the book. I can’t even really put into words how many ways this story pulls on your heartstrings but I think you should definitely consider reading this book if you haven’t. ...more
