I immediately recognized the cover. I don't remember the story well but I did find it enjoyable and clever with the illustrations. Hopefully I come across this someday so I can give it a re-read....more

Kindness to an animal is repaid many times over - a common theme in fairy tales so nothing new here but it's still an enjoyable tale. It's kind of hard to not feel for the poor lad even though you know he should have listened to his wife. The ending of this tale is very reminiscent to several others where a mortal returns from a magical world to find his family and friends have passed on and they themselves have aged greatly. I think the men in these tales would have stayed where they are if they'd been warned clearly of what would happen if they left these magical worlds because the warnings are often so vague....more

Damn, but these parents suck. They lost a daughter and then another, and send the third daughter out as well despite what happened to the other two. I mean, really, come the fuck on. As for the animals, sure, being kind to animals is good, but I think the daughters in this tale were punished unfairly for not attending to their host's animals (really, shouldn't that be the responsibility of the owner, especially as the owner never told the girls to take care of the animals!)
Granted, in the end it is revealed the animals were enchanted and all that, but I still think the two older sisters were punished unfairly....more

A queen does her best to obey her husband's warnings when he goes off on a trip, but like in many tales, the innocent woman is persuaded and tricked by a wily witch who turns her into a white duck and takes her place at the king's side when he comes back home. Fret not, justice is eventually meted out so all's well that ends well....more

WHAT THE GOD DAMN FUCK, DAPPLEGRIM. Three times (three years in a row) Dapplegrim tells his owner to kill all the other foals so that he can have all the milk from all the mares so he can grow big and strong. Not once, not twice,. but THRICE does he do this - twelve foals per year from the twelve mares the lad is in charge of.
That's one fucked-up horse. But he did help the lad get himself some swag, including a princess.

So the premise of this story is that a drakestail bird (Google results show this is a duck, apparently) has saved up a good amount of money, to the point where the king has taken notice of him, and borrowed this money from him. (in another version, the drakestail finds a coin, and then is asked to donate it to the king, with the promise of repayment) Either way, the king is a spendthrift who just blows through the tax money that has been collected. What an asshole.
Anyway, one has to question how a duck has been able to amass this much money, but whatever. However, when the time to repay the loan comes, the king refuses. So the drakestail goes to claim it, and makes friends along the way by helping them, so these friends repay his assistance by helping him to get his money back from the king.
In the end, the drakestail is elected by the people to become the new king, and he is a much better king than the old one....more

3.5/5 stars. I read a version of this story years ago in an illustrated children's book, so it was nice to come across it again in Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book. It's not a fairy tale per se but it is still an amusing tale about a very poor boy who lucks out after getting a cat....more

A wolf comes across a fox, neither of them have eaten for a while but the wolf has the advantage due to his size. The vixen however is quite clever, so she convinces him to let her grab one last meal, which is a farmer's stash of cheese at the bottom of a dry well.
There is a bit of water left in the well, and the moon is just at the perfect angle overhead that the fox convinces the wolf it's a wheel of cheese. She tricks him into going down the well and gets away with her life. This story is one of those that should be read so the reader can really appreciate its cleverness....more

Since I have read a whole spate of Aesop's fables lately, this story really reminds me of these. A rabbit and a monkey are friends. Although the money is not a very good friend, playing tricks on and taking advantage of the good-natured rabbit, until the rabbit decides he's had enough, and turns the monkey's final scheme right back at him.
So even though this is not part of the Aesop collection, it could very well be, with the moral to not bully and abuse your friends....more
