Personally I haven’t read anything else from this world and I think it would have helped hugely if I had. If you jump into this, it will make sense but a lot of the context is overlooked especially surrounding powers.
Saying that I enjoyed an awful lot about this. The aliens they meet have a whole lot of character and are amusing, the plot line was interesting and kept me guessing, the artwork is really clean and the pallets used are vibrant.
I do think the story could have done with a bit more depth and some explanation around certain things, there’s so much time spent focussing on her gaming that could have been used to give more detail about needed things.

I still adore the art for this series. It has a much more classic comic feel with some vivid colour work and a gritty feel to it.
I’m enjoying the eeriness too but I do feel like the story is getting so muddied with too much going on without little explanation or exploration. You don’t really get a moment to digest a plot point before being thrown into more questions.

The art style is beautiful as are the pastel leaning palettes used. It feels ethereal and draws you into the fantasy setting. I finished this and immediately had to look if there was another volume out.
The story did feel a little erratic at times but mostly because there’s a lot of history and backstories to take in as well as the current adventure premise. All in all I really enjoyed how much we got to learn about everyone and the world’s lore.

There is a really cute strangers to friends to lovers romance which is a joy to watch the development of. That portion was great but I felt the fantasy/sci-fi portion needed more exploration and clarity.

I love Maggie Tokuda-Hall’s other works so I seriously wanted to read this. However I wasn’t sure if this one would be for me because it did seem to be a younger YA novel.
This was an awesome read. It has a surprising amount of grittiness and fighting, it has monsters and a very emotive storyline. The pacing was spot on and the characters are both very lovable with a grumpy/sunshine vibe.
One thing that was a little jarring was an ableist slur thrown in at one point. Whilst I get it was meant to show how evil a character was, this character was only featured for like one page and it felt so unnecessary.

I found this to be a really interesting take on the space / Star Trek vibes genre. It looks at the impact of colonisation and the rebellion within those who work as part of the fleet.
The artwork was also really well done, and the story was clear in its message.
Saying that the pacing was off hugely which did make it hard to follow at times. Certain scenes felt clipped far too short and lacked explanation, there were time jumps which only added to the hectic pace, and we follow multiple characters who I only felt got a partial story each. If this had only followed Basil I think it would have been a clearer direction to go in with more explanation to the story.
Saying that it was a fun read. This isn’t really a happy read, and I appreciated that. It’s filled with nuance, struggle, and emotion. But regardless it’s packed with action and is fast paced.

I love Jenna’s writing style and still found Jenna’s style great with this book.
I read a lot of YA romance/ lit fic, and did enjoy Jenna’s other book a lot. However for me I really did not like the mc in this.
I found she made some really hurtful choices and comments, and just wasn’t a person I wanted to root for. That and there was also the ‘you’re more than sport’ commentary frequently that just had me feeling the ick.
In found myself hoping they don’t end up together because the romantic interest was treated so poorly by her and her friends.

Also the sapphic romance JUST WAS. There was no negative emotions and fear surrounding it, it was just sweet and happy and joyous to witness. It makes me so happy to see LGBT young teens getting this kind of rep when so often our media rep is based in fear & tragedy.
There’s also a lot of themes surrounding exploring heritage and reconnecting to heritage as Artie begins to shift.
