I tried reading the book in print, and find my mind just wandering. A few people suggested I stick with it, but honestly, I just don't care about the story.
It feels like there are too many narratives, too many characters are telling unimportant parts of the story. A lot of it feels repetitive. I'm just giving up and reading some summaries online for the book club.
I've concluded that the book is just bloated. The only character I felt anything for was Woolly, simply because he was obviously in need of help. Billy struck me as an idiot for a well-read child. (I get that he's 8, even so, an 8-year-old should have more sense than what he had.) I hated Duchess and everything about him. The other characters felt unnecessary and pulled me out of the narrative. There are other ways to convey those scenes. I'm just disappointed with this book. Especially since I enjoyed A Gentleman in Moscow so much. ...more

The narrator as good, but there were many times when she didn't make a distinction between who was saying what. It got confusing.

It's a real shame since I received this NetGalley through Penguins First Flights series. I don't care for the main character. The writing feels flat. First off: I normally don't read historical fiction books. I have nothing against them, but sometimes they just don't attract my attention or hold it long enough for me to care about the characters. I blame this on having to read too much "great literature" during my years as an English Lit major. Most of that great literature sucked and was boring beyond reprieve. Secondly, This book is written in the first person and the narrator, Inigo Balboa, reminded me too much of Pip from Great Expectations. I hated Great Expectations (nuff said). Third: I listened to the audiobook. I listen to many audiobooks because I have a long drive to work and this makes the time go by faster. However, the narrator, Scott Brick, overacted this to the point where I just got fed up with it. While Mr. Brick has an excellent voice and has done some amazing vocal work for audiobooks, this one was not his best performace. He was far too dramatic and over the top for me to even understand what was going on. His performance makes it difficult to really get into the book and enjoy it. I think I would have enjoyed this book much more if I read it instead of listened to it....more
