We are dealing with a lot of threads and a lot of attempted suspense. And to be honest a lot of very clear plot armor. Like so clear sometimes the characters comment on it themselves.
On the other hand these are fantastic characters. The books do feel different and the relationships feel meaningful but don’t take over the larger plot.
These are so well done. This is just landing slightly flatter be cause it felt a little drawn out. 827 pages is a lot. ...more

I don’t think this is completely the books fault. I mean we(?) all know that I hate high fantasy. And I going to be honest I don’t know what makes a book high fantasy. I just know I hate books labeled as high fantasy. This book is was at 50% and I was so bored and I Googled it and Google told me it was high fantasy, and I had a moment of “oh well that’s the problem”.
However, here is the real problem. I don’t care. I don’t care about their weird war. I don’t care that there is a treaty. I don’t care if the fairies and pretending to be wolves. I just don’t care. I really don’t care about Ferye. I do kind of wonder if she is supposed to be a reader/author insert because it seems like she’s basically nothing. She’s sort of whiney and keeps giving up with basically no effort on her part because it will be a better time to stop giving up tomorrow, I guess? And then there is the constantly being given good advice and deciding it’s great advice but I’d rather ignore it.
The only character I am even minorly invested in is Rhys. Don’t get me wrong the other dudes are fine. They seem like perfectly good faeries. But who cares? They are old and overly angry.
And this whole thing seems like a set up for her to actually fall in love with the other guy and that level of fickleness is a little fucked up given the only reason any of this happened is because she loves this one sooooo much. I say that without knowing where we are going but after 85% of a book sets up an eternal love story that’s a weird place to start a love triangle. I mean if you could just fall for someone else could I recommend not going back for your boyfriend where you will be tortured? Unless you aren’t actually going back for him you just are weirdly self destructive and want to put yourself in literally the most damsely position you possibly can.
Okay so maybe some of the fault here is that this is not the book for me. ...more
I can’t tell you anything about this book… It showed up in an unplugged box and Jesus, I’m so happy I read it with 0 context.

I need to go back and read Peter Pan again there are things I didn’t remember. I’ve always been more of an Alice in wonderland than Peter Pan because there is an edge to Peter Pan. But well… Jesus.

This isn’t a stand alone book. It can’t live without the book before it and probably the book after it. But the story of scarlet is a lovely story and I’m so on board. The connectivity comes a lot from the fact that cinder is pushing into the corners of this book and without an investment in her from the book before you’ll get lost in that bit.
But for someone who hates series I’m all in on this one. I bought this and cress on Friday? I think. I’m going back for winter and the extra content today. I love reading these and I love holding these books. They feel special. ...more

Okay real talk neither of us is crying, but I seriously considered it reading this book. I need to live in a world with this response to toxic masculinity. This was so much more than the other books in this series a d that’s a lot because they were already a lot. But I’m a sucker for broken people and personal growth. And I’m a sucker for people that are just fundamentally good people. What I love about these books is that they read romance novels to learn how to be partners, but not to copy them. To have empathy and be better people. They aren’t reenacting a romance novel they are being fully human, and that is beautiful. ...more

It feels like something you could be out there doing yourself. Which is why when reality starts to seem like it might be coming apart at the edges that’s a concerning idea.
This feels real and current. It also feels like a more down to earth version of ready player one. They don’t know everything they are able to research everything.

It really fundamentally talks about what it’s really like to be a woman in the world sometimes. How it’s really and truly terrible some days.
It’s also about the fact we don’t live in a romance novel. That’s a lot of what this series is about. I know weird since they are about men reading romance novels. But the relationships aren’t romance novel relationships. The first one is about saving the relationship you leave at the beginning of a lot of romance novels. The second is about how the perfect man isn’t actually perfect. When you want a relationship you want something real. These books are about how the men read romance novels to understand how women think, but not to ignore that real life isn’t a romance novel.
It’s a reminder that we live in a real world where real things happen, and people are able to create space in it.
Even though these books might be wish fulfillment. ...more
