This was a very engrossing and compelling book that was NOT the book I expected it to be. I love it when that happens. I went in thinking it was like This was a very engrossing and compelling book that was NOT the book I expected it to be. I love it when that happens. I went in thinking it was like a 'Sherlock Holmes but fantasy' type book. Turns out it's murder mystery aspect is just the wrapping on a bloody, heartbreaking political thriller that (yes) does involve a bit of fantasy and magic.
I'll definitely be moving onto book two after a little novella amuse-bouche to clear the old mind palate....more

Here I was afraid that a prequel wouldn't be what I wanted, and that the main character couldn't hold an entire first-person narrative as well as the first book. I was SO WRONG!
This book, is filthy and heartwarming, devastating and uplifting, filled with tragedy and filled with guffaws. I absolutely loved it.

Think 'Umbrella Academy' somehow meets 'Death On the Nile.' Add to it a delightfully irreverent narrator, super well-done and NOT pander-y LGBTQ+ representation, and twists that actually surprise you.
Part of me hopes this is just the start to a series, but part of me also thinks the story was told so well, and with such a satisfying closing, that maybe it should just be left alone. Either way, I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this author....more
