I didn't enjoy this book quite frankly. Murakami has great writing and the reason I read 370 pages of this is because he has such great writing. I love the excessive detail and the mundane aspect to his writing and he writes great characters. But the plot of this book was horrible. Just horrible. To be quite honest I understood nothing I read in 370 pages of the plot because it was just ridiculously stupid. Couldn't even begin to explain it.
Spoilers will ensue but trust me they don't matter because you really shouldn't read this book.
So I DNF'd it for one specific reason. I intended to finish the book has I only had 97 pages left, but I got to a particular scene and decided not to. The 50yo sleeping with a 15yo who was MAYBE her son didn't stop me from reading it, no the thing that stopped me was the rape scene. Now, don't get me wrong, I actually don't mind rape in books when it serves a plot purpose of some sort because while rape is a vile disgusting thing, it does make very plots take interesting turns. But this rape scene was senseless and pointless and had 0 purpose. I DO NOT like rape scenes that have no purpose in a book. And while I don't believe in triggers and never will, this rape scene is very "calm" so it's not uncomfortable to read.
So I originally wanted to give this 2 stars for the writing causing me enough to finish the book, but nah because I wasted so much time reading 370 pages of this shitty book and I got nothing from it. And since I read 80% I'm counting this towards my Goodreads challenge and I dare you to stop me.

Dnf at 80 damn percent.
I'm dnfing this for the rape scene. I'm not doing a rape scene. I already hated this stupid ass book so fuck it.
I'm rating it 1 star instead of my originally planned 2 because I didn't enjoy that this rape scene served no purpose in the plot and I read 370 pages of this shit and still hate it. ...more

So I finally read the legendary Murakami and I ended up really enjoying it! The thing is, this book was mediocre really. Mediocre plot, a sa4.5 stars
So I finally read the legendary Murakami and I ended up really enjoying it! The thing is, this book was mediocre really. Mediocre plot, a sad love story with far too much tragedy and overly sexual, but still good. But the writing is where Murakami shines. I started this book, read 10 pages, and hated his writing. But I grew to love it and I ended up being taken to Tokyo through his words. He has this way with words that he can write such an atmospheric story. He does this so clearly and so well that this is where he shines.
I did love most of the characters but not all. I didn't fully understand Toru at all and the way he understood his relationships with other people. I also didn't like Naoko at all. I felt for her but I wasn't a fan of hers. I mostly didn't like the way her and Toru affected one another. I really liked Reiko, and Midori was my favourite character. She was so unique and the one character in the book I could relate to.
Plot wise most of this story was unbelievable. There was far too much sex and sexual discussion for a book of 293 pages. If you take it out I'm sure the book would have hit only 200 pages. It was also not really realistic given the time period for some of the things that happened to have happened. And again, far too much death. The book also, while being extremely sad and emotional, didn't emotionally affect me in any way.
So while there were some clear issues I had, they didn't affect the story. I still was engrossed and wanted to keep reading all the time and I know I owe it all to Murakami's writing....more

I was under the false I will start my review with my one critique, and it's something I find important for people to know, this isn't a horror story. I was under the false impression this was a gothic horror, there's 0 horror in this. It's not scary or anything, it has a mysterious ambiance but that's about it. So that was a bit of a let down as I did spend the entire book kind of waiting for that.
But yeah wow this book was good. The writing was so mysterious! Everything about it. You know nothing about the main character, you know this character of Rebecca who is some mysterious woman that you don't really know even though you feel like you do. There's the house that was a character in itself and also felt quite mysterious. And while as I stated above this isn't really scary or a mystery, the whole book does have a mysterious tone to it. You always wonder things and are curious about things.
I don't really want to say too much as I think this book needs to be read knowing very little about it, as I went into it, so just know I definitely recommend it. It made me realize that I just really need to give classics a bigger chance because I shy away from them so much. ...more

So I'm gonna get a little real about some stuff now.
When I went to rate this book, I immediately knew I wanted to give it 5 stars. But for some reason I felt like I should give it 4. I always tell people I don't like contemporary or I don't read contemporary and I don't like it, but I'm realizing that's just not true. I just find contemporaries stressful. The fact that most of the "problems" in contemporaries could be solved by communication has always made them seem pointless to me, and I just get super stressed out reading them. But this one has made me realized that it's still fun. I can still be stressed out and loving the book. It shows that I like the book. I always felt that contemporaries just "weren't as good" as other genres so giving it 5 stars felt wrong. But not anymore! I am now on the contemporary train. I'm going to give them a better chance and start reading them more and I will value their worth just as much as other books.
Okay tangent over, time to gush about how much I loved this book!!! In all the really negative reviews of this book I always heard about Lara Jean being annoying. Umm wrong?? She's one of my favourite contemporary females ever! She's so cute and sweet and she tries her best and I want to protect her from everyone in the whole world that isn't going to treat her well. I loved the side characters too. Peter (he is still trash though but maybe good trash? I don't know don't ask me I don't know my own feelings), Josh (I was on the Josh train for a little bit but not really idk don't ask I don't know my own feelings), Kitty, her dad. Everyone!! Except Genevieve and Margot of course but that's only natural to not like them.
But yeah Idk I was gonna gush more but everyone has read this and those who haven't know what it's about so I'm just going to sit here and tell you, along with everyone else, to read this because it was cute and so worth reading!! Low key shoutout to MJ for making me read this but just lowkey because now you have a power over me with contemporaries....more

I think it's been a year since I read book 2, and 2 years since I read book 1. I'm not sure what about this series causes this delay.
I'll start off by saying this was my least favourite of the three books so far. I think this series has a lot of potential and is really quite good, but Maggie has just included too much. So many side stories and subplots and just what I'm saying are useless additions that just make the story about too much and too little all at once. I love the characters, they are why I continue to read ahead, but I don't actually love the plot so much. It's just... I don't know.
So I am excited for book 4, I look forward to seeing how this wraps up, how things end in the plot, but honestly I more care about how things wrap up for the characters and how the plot will affect the characters. ...more

My review likely still stands. It’s pretty much a repeat of Illuminae in terms of structure but I actually prefer the plot of this book in some ways. And I like the characters more in this one. I think I liked the book a bit more upon reread and have updated my rating to 5 stars. I also must be getting sentimental as I get older because that ending had me all teary eyed. —————————————————
Edit: expanded on stuff since I wrote my review at 5am after being awake 22 hours.
To put it simply, I liked this less than book one. I still liked it a lot, but it was not up to par with book 1.
Things I really enjoyed: These characters. I loved them all so much. They were so kick ass and cute and I loved them and genuinely wanted happiness for them all. I will say that I don't remember the personalities of Ezra and Kady too much but I do think I preferred Nik and Hanna from this book to them. Something about their sass and personalities mashed better with me, and I feel like they were in the book more than E+K were. I also like where the end started heading. I really liked the alternate universe stuff. I mostly liked this new stuff because it was unique and different and didn't follow what I expected to happen in the book. I also loved the hand drawn stuff by Marie Lu.
Things I didn't really enjoy: These first couple ones are not things that caused me to rate the book less than 5 stars. They were just personal preferences -- I did not like that there were moments where the page was black and the text was dark grey. I could barely read it. I also would have liked more variety in the sort of things we got. In book 1 we got a lot of really cool stuff but I felt like this book was mostly written reports of camera logs and chats. Which I feel actually was super necessary in the book but I would have liked just a little more other stuff. Again this didn't detract any of the rating but was a little thing.
Why I did give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it was too similar plot structure to Illuminae. Like big events and plot moments were identically placed in the plot to book 1. I felt like the beginning started in the same scenario, had the same kind of things happen, and progressed in the same manner as book 1. The end started to change things slightly which I appreciated but yeah it was basically like they plugged new events into a formula to get the same plot structure and while I liked the book I found this a little annoying.
So overall I liked it a lot. I docked it 1 star for the lack of originality. But I still enjoyed it and cannot wait for book 3 to see how this all works out and to meet the new characters the authors give us!...more
3 or 3.5. I still am undecided. My heart tells me 3.5 but my mind tells me 3 stars.
So before I start my review I want to say that this trilogy is amaz3 or 3.5. I still am undecided. My heart tells me 3.5 but my mind tells me 3 stars.
So before I start my review I want to say that this trilogy is amazing! It's a 5 star trilogy and well worth reading. My rating for this book and my following review do not in any way denounce this trilogy, I will recommend it until I die and it is definitely a top book of 2016. My second before I start is that I enjoyed this book. I want to say that before I get into my review because I think my review will be largely negative but I do want to state to start I DID like this book.
So here's the thing with this book, it was BORING. Like okay so it continues exactly to the minute where book 2 cut off and I loved that and I am glad the author decided to focus this book entirely on the topics he did. But there was so much in this I had to slog through. It took me nearly a month to read this because I read other books and had no interest in this at times. I did find this happened in book 2 as well but wow this was rough. The first 400 pages consisted primarily of Swedish government intel and that just was not for me. The last 300 pages the action started and I really got into it and there was a section near the end I just COULDNT stop reading. (view spoiler)[the absolute BEST part of this book was the court scene when Giannini was cross examining Teleborian. The best thing I've read in ages I was literally reading going SLAY GIRL because it was so fantastic. (hide spoiler)]
Now, I was going to give this 4 stars. I liked the conclusion of the story and while it was boring it was still good. But I gave it 3/3.5 stars because of the characters. The characters were just as amazing as they were in the first 2 books but I feel like Larsson sacrificed them for plot. Now, granted, he had I think 6 books planned but sadly passed away after the third so MAYBE he was going to fix this, but I was extremely disappointed with what I had left of the characters at the end of the story. ---A couple spoilers incoming now--- We had 0 conclusions to any of the character's stories. Salander and Mikael were my two FAVOURITE characters of life and I secretly wished for them to have a happily ever after. Together. But instead I got a barely existing friendship. After the events of the last two books where they didn't see each other a SINGLE time (except like 2 minor interactions in the last 50 pages) I was so let down. I just don't see why Larsson sacrificed what they had like that and threw it away. Blomkvist had chemistry with TWO characters in this series, Berger and Salander. I do not like that he ended up with Figeurola and honestly that's pretty much the entire reason that I gave this 3 stars. I dislike the crappy way the characters story ARCs were done and Blomkvist ended up falling in INSTALOVE with some random character introduced to us on page 500/746. So I just didn't appreciate that. Honestly, I had no plans to read book 4, but I honestly hope this random author ends up salvaging some of the respect I had for Blomkvist and repairing the relationship between the two leads. Also not to mention that none of the characters got any sort of closure, but I will assume this has to do with the passing of the author before the series was complete.
So I mean overall I DID enjoy this book but I had some very prominent problems. I am going to stand by my decision to call this a trilogy until I read book 4 and see how it fits into the series....more

This book followsSo We Are Still Tornadoes is a book that I got sent to me unsolicited from St. Martin’s Press (thank you!!) and boy am I glad I did! This book follows two best friends, Cath and Scott, who are being separated for the first time in their lives. Cath is going off to college and Scott is staying in their home town. This book is a series of back and forth letters to one another over their first year apart and their friendships, the ups and downs in each other’s lives, and how to maintain a friendship from so far apart.
So to start, I say a lot that I don’t really find contemporary a compelling genre. Well I’m starting to eat my words because I absolutely loved this book. I am constantly reading contemporary that’s cute and maybe not something I will pick up all the time, but I like nonetheless. So I think I’ll give this genre a bigger chance and maybe start checking out authors I’ve been hesitant to read.
Anywho, I digress. This book had such a simple plot but it was so cute. I loved reading about the two lives of these characters. They were so distinct and their lives so different that I enjoyed reading it. I also enjoyed the letter style and the relationship these characters had! I think the letter style made me love this book in a way I don’t think I would have if it was a normal novel. I enjoyed that we got the short snippets and the least description possible. Letters also meant that we got a whole years worth of events without the boring stuff and we got as much as possible. I’m not sure if any of that made sense but like yeah trust me the letter style was really the best thing for this!
Characters were the best part. I related to Scott more than Cath for the most part. I felt everything Scott was feeling. I understood him and when he went through hardships I empathized with him a little more than Cath. I loved Cath still but I didn’t empathize with her. I found her a very understanding and forgiving character and while I think those are amazing qualities, I also had moments where I didn’t want her to be so kind. Their relationship was adorable and their friendship was one I wish I had with someone. Overall I just loved them.
Random last snippet, I love that the year was 1982, presumably to have it so the fact that they sent letters instead of emailed/texted make sense. I just enjoyed that little extra detail....more

I personally want them to be together but that's probably just me? Anyways I just loved them again in this book. I also liked the side characters. I absolutely detested every single character in this book that wasn't Stargirl herself. They were disgusting, judgmental, and overall shitty people.
I didn't really like the plot either. You're supposed to see how shitty these people treat Stargirl and realize that you can't bully others for being different. But the thing is, I don't think that comes across well in this book. Because the POV is one of the idiots, you just get the sense that it's okay to judge and hate this girl because she's different. So I got the point, it's just not done well.
I maintain my 2 star rating but I am giving it an extra 3 star because I liked the ending. I liked to see the impact that Stargirl had on people and this school and I hope that she did really well for herself in life. I won't be reading the second book because from what I've seen about it I won't enjoy it, and I honestly prefer the life I've imagined Stargirl has after the events of the book.

This book picks up where book 1 left off and does so well. I loved where the plot headed and learning more about Lisbeth Salander. She is honestly one of my favourite characters of all time! She is so strong and I just adore her. Blomkvist is also just one of the best male characters of all time as well and I adore him also.
Something I like about these books is I love the detail. The author details every moment of these characters days in ways I love that I normally don't. I love that every scene has them making coffee or food. I think these little moments give the story life and feelings in me that I normally don't get all the time. I feel like I'm seeing their entire life and I just love it.
I will say the mystery in this one was very interesting and I enjoyed it, but I preferred the mystery in the first. I preferred getting to know the characters and growing to love them. So while I adored this book just as much as the first one, the first one has that first book in a world nostalgia that the rest just don't have (similar to the first Harry Potter book).

About 3-4 years ago I tried to start this but the beginning just bored me intensely so I quit but damn I wish I didn't. This ended up being SO good. I haven't been this invested or sold on a book in so long! I read 841 pages in 5 days and that's with me watching 2 seasons of Grey's Anatomy in the same time period. I absolutely flew through this book and have already begun reading the second book because I just need more.
The plot is actually why I picked this book up when I did. Long story short, I was in the mood for mystery books and I was in a short supply so I had to choose this one! I loved the mystery, the intricacy, the intensity and the chaos and honestly I just loved the entire plot. It was everything I needed, I loved the setting, the writing was so so riveting, I just adored this book from page 1 to page 841.
Characters though. Blomkvist is someone I really grew to just love. I loved his attitude and his intensity and his desire to do good and his emotions. Larsson wrote him so well and fleshed him out perfectly. I love his lifestyle and his personality and I feel like I know him so well now even though I don't remember this happening. And Salander, I love her deeply. I will admit she did things I didn't fully agree with, nor understand. But they were so in character for her that I didn't really care in the end. She's such a strong independent character but is also so incredibly childish and broken sometimes that it hurts your heart. The end of the book, literally the last 2 pages, broke my heart for her just a little bit because we saw one instance of emotion from her and it turned out so poorly.
So yeah I mean I loved this? Like deeply. Something like 75% of the people I'm friends with on here gave this a 3 star or less and I just can't understand where they saw flaws when I did not. I will say there were like 3 things that did bother me but they did not hugely impact my overall feelings about the book. For the 4 people on Goodreads who haven't read this book, I really advise you to because it was just so engrossing! Now to go watch the American movie and read the rest of the trilogy. After those I will determine my mood about the 4th novel and I will watch all the Swedish movies.

Here's the thing though, this book made me realize something. I read a lot of reviews for this and they all say "this wasn't as good as Gone Girl" or something similar and that pushed me away from reading this book for 2 years. I think that reading an entire novel and your first thought is "it wasn't as good as another book" is really not the kind of review I think any book deserves. So this book has shown me that seeing those type of statements and judging an entire book on them is not the way to go anymore, I am only going to read, or take into account, reviews that talk about the BOOK, and not the books it was compared to.
But on to my real review, this was really enjoyable! As a mystery I will say it was quite predictable TO ME, but I think casual readers (which I imagine many people reading this now will be due to the film) will find it a very good mystery. It was not anything new, but the author kept me interested and invested and captivated from page one. I wanted to see how everything happened and to see all the puzzle pieces fall into place, and what I got I enjoyed.
I really enjoyed the psychological issues of the MC more. She was a detestable and weak character with absolutely no redeeming qualities, and yet I really loved reading about her. I wanted to know all and everything about her because she was such a mess. I actually felt this about all the characters. There are one or two likeable characters in this story and they are all very minor characters, everyone else was so unlikeable. It was clearly the point, to make us hate everyone, but it left me the entire time just HAPPY that all these terrible things were happening to them, they all honestly deserved it.
This book make me read things I hate reading about, two things I normally will DNF a book for were so easy to read about in this book because of how captivating and addicting the author writes and I really think that was impressive so I gave this 4 stars because it was a nice quick enjoyable read that could definitely be read in 1 sitting. ...more
Wow was this ever a journey and I have a lot to say about it so buckle up my friends.
To start, I feel the need to say I DID like this book. I did. ITWow was this ever a journey and I have a lot to say about it so buckle up my friends.
To start, I feel the need to say I DID like this book. I did. IT is a movie I have always enjoyed and have always wanted to read where the story came from. But wow am I ever disappointed in all honesty.
I listened to this entire book as an audiobook because I did not have it in me to read 1100 pages right now, that amounted to about 45 hours of listening. For the first 15 hours, or about 350 pages, I was super into this. I was enjoying myself, I really was, but then I just started to get annoyed. It's not that anything annoying was happening, but I was listening to the same man for 15 hours and I was only 1/3 of the way done the book. I was getting irritated at the like excessive details that Stephen King puts into his books. I appreciate details, I really do, but I don't need a play by play of someone going pee. I know that it involves removing pants and sitting and washing hands and all that but you can cut out half a page of text just by saying "soandso went to the washroom." So about the last 300 pages I just wanted to be done. I wanted it to be over. I wasn't enjoying myself because it was so long and I was just losing steam. So unfortunately that really took over a lot of my time when it came to trying to enjoy the story.
So the actual book. Here's the thing, even when watching the movie IT, the end has always kind of bored me slightly. I just loved THE story of IT but I've never actually liked where he went with the whole idea. So it does make sense that the end of the book was boring me. But the book just made it WORSE. I don't know but there was so much confusion with the back and forth between childhood and adulthood and it was so confusing at times. There was a lot of other character's perspectives I didn't fully understand, and given the fact that there is 1100 pages, I felt like there were some aftermath parts missing near the end. So overall the ending wasn't good but I still LOVE the idea of IT.
Now this next section is going to be a little spoilery so if you haven't read the book you will be spoiled (even if you've seen the movie). To start, the adultery between Beverly and Bill made no sense to me. Like the inclusion of it just was a bit confusing to me. I don't really understand why it was included and honestly I preferred in the movie where she just ends up with Ben because Bill is happily married. Again, that's just a preference thing but yeah one little irksome moment. My biggest ?????????? moment though is in the last 100 pages. I don't actually understand the scene when ELEVEN year old Beverly had sex with all 6 boys in some sort of orgy moment.. I just don't understand and I have actually tried to read up on it to see if I could find an explanation but I haven't found anything so if any of you who have read this book have ANY sort of explanation as to why this was included I would love to know because it was very uncomfortable to read.
So umm yeah Idk I liked it, I didn't love it. I am not sure after these last 2 books if Stephen King is the author for me. He has VERY atmospheric stories to me where the atmosphere and tone he sets up are the best parts of the book. I still own Salem's Lot so I will read it one day and I have always wanted to read Misery, The Green Mile, and Pet Semetary so I do have the desire to try him again but yeah overall I wasn't hugely impressed with this book and I think it has to do with the size.
