I've read a lot of poetry collections lately and it's so strange how the most recent ones are all clipped and follow the same, short, bite-sized and Tumblr-stylized type of writing style.
I found the beginning of this book interesting, and I enjoyed a selective few of the descriptions and poems, but as it progressed, I think it lacked a good writing style, concise topics and depth.
The book tried to be 'deep' but it touched upon topics briefly and then was either extremely vague/abstract about them or never even made a point.
The majority of these poems did not make sense whatsoever. I do not like books that try to be 'abstract' by confusing the living daylights out of their readers, and this short and boring style of writing is not my taste.
Here's an example of a confusing poem from the book: (there's plenty more where that came from)
"honestly, I'd like to know what it's like to love a woman as a woman, I'd like to be honest
honestly, I'd like to know what it's like to be a woman,
see how you're still fu*king me up even now that you're a ghost
these secrets you carry for me, are they too heavy?"
I'm not even joking, this was the actual format of the poem. There were long spaces between each sentence that I condensed to make more readable and it seems like something a person would scribble onto a piece of paper after witnessing a vivid dream at three in the morning. Is this what modern poetry has succumbed to? And don't even get me started on the lack of punctuation, despicable.
What does the above poem even mean? Is the author alluding to a gay ghost? Is the author saying they're not a woman? Is the author questioning their sexuality? I DON'T KNOW. This is not even abstract poetry, it's just poetry that has literally no comprehensive structure or material to it.

I can understand why others gave it such a high rating though since the art was beautiful but I've just read and watched so many books/movies...etc with the same premise and it brought nothing new to the table, plus the humour was not very interesting for me, so it was quite boring altogether.
The characters were 2 dimensional and it was too light hearted and dull for me (especially since the love interest is literally blackmailing her? Why is the main character not furious? Why is she not sad? Why does she not show any emotion in general unless she wants to mock the immature love interest?). I also find the fact that the main character IS ONLY 16 and the love interest is 23 (or 26? I forget) very uncomfortable, but then again Boys Over Flowers was very problematic and I still enjoyed that manga way more than this.

Technically this is a dnf but I'm just going to rate it anyway because it was not good whatsoever. I bought this at a thrift store and I only read the first poem called "the rose." I thought it was good and decided to buy it, turns out that's someone else's work and this is just not my cup of tea whatsoever. This just reads like poems on Tumblr, and not even good ones at that. It was so cliche and I had no clue this book was going to be explicit. Anyways, I do not reccomend.

The Wish List details the life of an anxious and closed off bookworm who has an obsessive tendency with counting. She’s forced to go to therapy by her parents because of her lack of romantic relationships, and there, THE wish list is born. Soon after, she meets what she presumes is the perfect man for her and further journeys on with the concept of love and relationships in general, while still tackling her work life and bridezilla step-sister.
The premise interested me, a wish list and a lonely bookworm who has a strange habit? Sign me up! But the story itself did not deliver. It was very basic and didn’t bring anything new to the table. It just felt like something I’d read a million times before, and it could’ve been done much better. I wish there had been more twists, and that the ones that were included in the story weren’t so expected or easy to guess. By the second chapter, I had already penned what would happen, and it went in the route I though it would.
As I write this review, I have already forgotten the love interest’s name, which is always a bad sign for a romance novel, or any novel in general. The character’s were dull and the “romance” was pushed onto the reader with little to no development. There was nothing that held my attention, nor any character I felt attached to or loved/loathed. We never got to know the character’s intentions and they felt very one dimensional.
I will say that the author’s writing flowed well and she managed to humour me in some parts of this story. I found the concept of her living in England interesting since most novels I’ve read recently have been set in America, it was nice to see a change in atmosphere. Overall though, this just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I really wanted to love this, truly. I think Marissa Meyer is an amazing author and though I have not finished The Lunar Chronicles yet, the first book amazed me. But this one was not it.
Instant Karma is a young adult romance about a girl who's forced to work with her archenemies through the course of one eventful summer, filled with cute sea creatures and the dreaded Quint Erickson.
This story has all the elements to amaze or at least entertain. The author is great judging by her other works, the protagonist is semi-relatable (or at least I thought she would be in the beginning) and it includes enemies-to-lovers, and don't even get me started on this trope because I love it with a passion. Unfortunately though, all of these elements combined resulted in a boring, predictable, chemistry-less (let's pretend that's a word) book that I did not enjoy.
I think my biggest issue with this book is that it’s a romance, but the characters have no chemistry and are just flat. I felt like the main male character was just too perfect, he was given no flaws, and the “flaws” that we were supposed to believe were true were so obviously false (you’ll see what I mean if or when you read the book).
Prudence, don’t even get me started on Prudence. She was this goody two-shoes who always tried to excel in school and I thought I might be able to relate to her, but she came off rather bitter and rude. We do get to see her change a bit throughout the story, and I think the author did a good job at making her transition from pesky brat to palpable human being, but she was still adamant on being selfish and unlikable.
As I mentioned, Quint was just so PERFECT. It was annoying. I've never understood why writing advice always says to give your characters flaws, but now I do. Quint is everything I don't want in a book boyfriend. He is bland, boring and uninteresting. He was too flawless to even be human, and it was annoying how we were reminded of how good he was every five seconds.
The writing style was basic. There were barley any descriptions of the surroundings and at times I found it difficult to imagine where they were. The dialogue was bland and the characters were too. Nothing pulled me in about the writing style, initially I thought I would enjoy it because it's in 1st POV and I enjoy this genre most in 1st POV, but in this case, not even the POV could make it better.
I'm really disappointed that I didn't enjoy this book but I guess that's life. I definitely reccomend checking out some the author's other books though!

UNPOPULAR OPINION COMING THROUGH.
Come Again is supposedly about a woman who loses her husband who she is madly in love with. She accidentally goes back in time, and has to make her husband fall in love with her again, while also trying to save his life from a tumour growing in his brain. The key word is "supposedly," because truthfully, the synopsis only describes about 10% of the book and the events within this section are much different than what we expect to conspire. I would like to say that I at least enjoyed this 10% of the book, but then I'd be lying.
There’s random chunks of information EVERYWHERE, and there’s so many character’s and all of them have a super complex background that takes up like three pages. I love getting to know characters, BUT THEY ARE LITERALLY IN THE BOOK FOR 2 1/2 PAGES, WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM? And holy, how, HOW, can these characters still manage to be SO one dimensional when all of this information is given?
In the book, there’s a part where Kate insults her husbands book (he's an author) and says the reason it sucks is because it has no meaning or plot, and in that moment, I just thought, “wow, maybe this book is aware that the exact same thing is happening here.” BECAUSE IT IS. THERE IS NO PLOT OR MEANING, ONE SECOND THERE'S THE RUSSIAN MAFIA, THEN THERE'S SOME DUDE WHO'S SUPPOSEDLY IN LOVE WITH THE MAIN CHARACTER (I did not sign up for a love triangle) AND THEN THERE'S A BUNCH OF RANDOM CHARACTERS THAT DO NOT EFFECT THE PLOT NOR CHARACTERS IN ANY WAY.
In the beginning, I felt this was a spy novel, in the middle, I thought it might be a badly written romance, but in the end, I realized this was just a mess.
I can’t even start to talk about part 3 of this book because I don’t think I’ve ever read anything messier, and let me remind you that I began writing when I was 12, so I’ve read a lot of terrible plotless stuff, but this definitely took the cake.
I hate writing negative reviews because I know authors pour their souls into their work, but I really feel this needs to be revised WAY more and some irrelevant parts really need to be cut down (70% of this book is info dumps that the reader doesn't need). Aspects need to be more subtle, I knew what the end result would be 20% into the novel which is never a good sign, and foreshadowing should definitely be used. The writing is not like that of a novel. I LOVE descriptions, they really help me dive deeper into the book, and I feel like a movie is playing in my mind as I read, but the descriptions were so plain and boring, I felt as if I were reading a text book, and the movie in my head was non-existent.
I also don’t think this should be branded to be a romance, but rather, a general fiction because nothing about this book is romance. Seriously, I do not know what was happening. I will not mention anything here because I don’t want to spoil anything, but MANY aspects of the non-existent “romance” (and I mean this quite literally, it was non-existent) was rushed and it was so painfully obvious.
I did like the concept, though I didn’t like how it was executed, but it was still a cool idea and that’s why I requested this book from netgalley in the first place. It's just that I was not given what was promised in the synopsis, and this book felt like it was struggling to find a genre it could conform to.
After this book, I am officially taking a break from romance books (though as I said previously, I wouldn't classify this as a romance). Well, technically, after I finish reading Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer (I can’t resist). Any recommendations for other genres (I'll read anything as long as it's interesting) are welcomed!
I was so excited to read this, but it turned out to be a huge let-down. All of the characters 1.5 stars
Yet again, I find myself in the minority.
I was so excited to read this, but it turned out to be a huge let-down. All of the characters were super flat, if the mc was to be murdered at any moment, I would not feel a thing. The main character was a complete Mary Sue, and honestly, so was everyone else. All of the “plot twists” I saw a mile away, and nothing really surprised or intrigued me in this story.
The romance was just not done right. I don’t want to include any spoilers, but the supposed love interest caused a great deal of pain to the mc. And all she could say was “I CAN’T SEE YOU TODAY.” LIKE WHAT EVEN, if something like that happened to me I would’ve been furious and not want to see the person for an ETERNITY. I know that the mc was in a unique situation, but it still didn’t make it right, and she was so easy to forgive. And even more than that, all she could say about anyone in the novel is “OH HE’S SO HOT BUT TERRIBLE.” LIKE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS GIRL. The main love interest (I honestly have no clue if this was a love triangle or not, this book was that confusing and a bunch of love interests were introduced last minute) constantly kissed the mc with no regard for her comfort and she just went along with it even though she “hates” him. I wouldn’t call this novel a romance, even though it did try and focus on the aspect a lot, because it was really just a haphazard attempt at inserting a bunch of kissing and memories of “love.”
I wish I could say that I liked or disliked a character, but I was so unattached to this book that I just did not care about anyone. This novel really did feel like I was reading about characters who had no emotions, robots at that, and I did not like it whatsoever. I was told that the mc was angry, I was not shown her frustration with the world itself. This story is in first person but I felt very detached to the main character and everyone else. Also, this was one of those novels where the bad guys were solely “bad” for the sake of being villains. They cackled and had dark backstories and were evil with no actual motive. I really don’t like it when characters are this bland and nothing was really memorable about this book. The main character acted very immature, and the whole “chosen one” trope has been done a MILLION TIMES. I’m sick of seeing it in novels, a simple Mary Sue becomes almighty in a matter of seconds and then says “OH, I ALWAYS KNEW I WAS SPECIAL, DEEP DOWN INSIDE.” I just can’t. Tropes can be done right, but this one was not.
The writing was not my cup of tea, and I found myself losing focus as I tried to read this novel. I started in the morning yesterday, and took hour-long breaks because I couldn’t continue. In the end, I forced myself to read through and was disappointed but not surprised. This is a solid 1.5 stars, and originally I rated it as a 2 stars, but as time passed, I realized that this novel was more of a 1 star. It was problematic in certain areas and honestly the only thing I liked about it is the lack of grammatical errors. There was also a cliffhanger at the end that captured my attention, which is good, but doesn’t make up for the entirety of the novel which was bland, boring, and poorly written.

This was so boring. You know a book isn't good when you're waiting anxiously for it to end. I actually enjoyed Annie in the other books and thought her story might be good but she was just very unpleasant and negative in this one. Also, the ending just felt very out of place and surreal.

The start of this book was promising, it was good and light. But all good things come to an end, and this was the case for both my attention span and overall interest in this novel. I started slowly losing interest in the characters and the world itself, but I still had hope.
❝ Maybe I am the monster. After all, I come out to play at night. But so do you, little one. ❞
And then came Wolfe. I had so many issues with this character. It’d take me days to write down all the things I was peeved by but I’m not going to do that because I don’t want to spoil anything or waste my time. All I can say is I am utterly astonished by how deep my hatred for this character goes. It is deeper than the Mediterranean sea, and sparks a fiery rage throughout me when I hear his name. I just couldn't stand him or his personality. I also hated how he was forgiven so quickly for his actions, which were quite cruel in my opinion.
❝ As a gentleman, you have failed me. As a con, however, I give you an A plus. Highly impressive. ❞
The only character I liked was Ms. Sterling. Francesca wasn’t all that bad, but she fell flat for me. In the beginning she came off as fierce and would always speak her mind, but as the story progressed, she became even more dependent on other people for protection and everything else.
❝ The world is an unfair place. It does not reward you for being good, or decent, or moral. But for being talented, driven, and cunning. ❞
I couldn’t focus on the story and was getting bored while reading. The plot revolved around pushing the two people together. The "conflict" throughout the story was just a barrier that'd be so easy to break down with conversation. The only big thing to happen literally came out of nowhere and I think I've read about 50 novels where the same thing has occurred, just to stir up the plot a bit, not to actually develop characters or anything of the sort. If there had been more going on and plausible conflict I could see myself enjoying this much more than I did.
❝ We were entwined and entangled, connected with invisible strings, each of us trying to pull away, only to create more knots that made us closer. ❞
I honestly can see why so many people loved it. I absolutely adored the author’s writing style and have so many quotes stored in my notes from the book, but everything else just did not do it for me.
❝ No love is fully requited. No love is equal. No love is fair. There is always one side that loves more. And you better not be that side—because it suffers. ❞
The ending didn’t make sense, and I felt that the character development was too rushed and unbelievable. The HEA came out of nowhere. The big "conflict" between the love interests was solved with, you guessed it, CONVERSATION. It practically took a paragraph to forget the problems that were so "important" throughout the novel, and for everything to be solved. The ending did not feel complete whatsoever.
❝ A Story of a Nemesis and a Villain with no chance at a happy ending. Where the prince doesn't save the princess. He tortures her. And the beauty doesn't sleep. She's stuck. In a nightmare. ❞
I would definitely reccomend at least checking this author out though because their writing style is really good, and the dialogue was SO GODAMN QUOTE WORTHY. This is just not the book for me, but i’d be open to reading her other books because I was truly enamoured with the writing style.

I’m disappointed, yet again. I bought this entire series because of a video I watched on BookTube, and I had very high expectations going into this book.

I really, really wanted to love this one, but in the end I didn’t.
This book felt empty, devoid of any emotion or character development. (view spoiler)[Yes, I know Lilac became stronger and less snarky, but it was impossible for me to pinpoint an actual personality to her or any of the other characters. Plus, I couldn’t bring myself to actually like her or mourn her death. (hide spoiler)] All the characters were very one dimensional. I felt very detached from the characters, and the world itself.
The romance just felt so surreal, and I didn’t ship them. The characters “chemistry” felt very dull, and at times I was so bored I wanted to just throw this book into outer space.
The writing style is very basic and amateur. I read this only a month ago and I can't remember a thing that happened. It just was not memorable, and I was so close to dnfing but I made myself push through it.
The thing that really bothered me was that the factor that is supposed to 'drive' this story is the romance, and while I have no issue with romance, this one was so boring and bland I was ready to sleep. Everything was written to help further the romance, and a roadblock was only present to make tensions rise or in reality provide an obstacle that will be overcome. It seemed like all was written to solely advance the love story that I just wasn't interested in because the characters were so forgettable.
I was really hoping this would be my next favourite, but it's become one of my least favourite books of 2019. Something I did enjoy about this book was the mystery. It kept me intrigued and I wanted to know more.
In the future, I’ll try and continue on with the series because I impulsively bought all the books the second I saw them on a bookshelf.

I usually hate characters like Wolf (the silent and semi-broody type) but Wolf is so well developed as a character and amazing, PERIOD. I added another star just because of him, he caught my attention and kept it.
Unfortunately though, I was not so enthusiastic about the rest of the book. I loved the writing style, as I always do with Marissa Meyer's books but I felt the plot dragged on. I was very bored and not much happened. I also did not like how the chapters alternated through Cinder's perspective of her predicament and Scarlet's perspective. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Cinder, but alternating perspectives/stories is not my cup of tea, so I guess my dislike for this aspect is more about personal preference.
Even though this wasn't my favourite, I still look forward to reading the next books!
