Seven Ghosts and One Other

Rate this book
In 1998 we published Vengeful Ghosts by C.E. Ward as our second publication (and our first by a living author). The collection was very well received, sold out pretty quickly and is long out of print. Indeed, it's now something of a collectors item. We are pleased and very proud to now present Mr Ward's long-awaited second ghost story collection ... Seven Ghosts and One Other. These eight Jamesian tales include two new long and previously unpublished supernatural stories and the authorised completion of M.R. James' unfinished “The Game of Bear”. “The Doorway of St Stephen's”, “The Game of Bear”, “The Short Cut”, “Not Found Among You”, “The Particular”, “The Guardian”, “Mariner's Rest” and “Behind the Curtain”.

C.E. Ward’s earlier collection of Jamesian Ghost stories (“Vengeful Ghosts”) is utterly impossible to find. Nevertheless, and despite the deluge of teenage Vampire romances and typically American door-stopper-sized horror novels, there has been a steady demand for such stories, which eschew sex & gore, and rather encourage the reader to fill in the background with strange noises and malevolent touches from the depths of their minds. Sarob Press, in their latest ‘Avatar’ had begun their venture with a collection of C.E. Ward’s latest stories, which is the volume under review. Some of the stories are pastiches of James’ works, but some are terrifyingly original. The contents of this book are:

(*) Introduction
1. A Doorway to St. Stephens: shifting of mausoleums can be literally fraught with danger, esp. for the ignorant.
2. The Game of Bear: An unfinished draft left by M.R. James being completed here in a fittingly suffocating tale of suspense and revenge.
3. The Short Cut: When you deal with forces beyond your comprehension, are you ready to pay the ultimate price?
4. Not Found Among You: Wrongful accusation from a vindictive parson, inevitable conclusion and destruction of the innocent, and the terrible retribution that the parson had to suffer.
5. The Particular: A maze can be just a few lines of shrubbery, but it can harbour so many nasty secrets!
6. Behind The Curtain: Why did the appraisers of the old paintings run away, and where did the man depicted in the picture go, to escape from the law?
7. The Guardian: What had happened to the crown of Richard the Third?
8. Mariner’s Rest: Past catching up with a light-house man.
(*) Afterward

Except for two stories, all the others had been published in Ghosts & Scholars, Supernatural Tales or All Hallows. Nevertheless, by bringing them together, and giving us an opportunity to experience “a pleasing terror” Sarob Press has done a singular service. Recommended.
