I could tell when I started this one that I was going to like the hero, Nathan Drake. The story starts out with some scenes of Nathan in action as a Special Forces soldier that illustrate what kind of man he is--brave and self-sacrificing, and looking out for everyone but himself. But I also thought that he got a little too self-sacrificing to the point that he practically gave up his own life and a chance for happiness in order to protect his supposedly genius brother Jamie and his dying mother. His brother apparently had the I.Q. of a genius, yet he kept making one bad decision after another, showing he had absolutely no street smarts to go along with the high I.Q. After one particularly bad decision where Jamie gets in trouble with the law, Nathan feels he has no choice but to go AWOL to save his brother's naive butt, throwing away his own life and dreams.

Two years pass, and everything Nathan holds dear is now lost. He becomes a man on a mission seeking justice with nothing left to lose. That's when he meets Terri Mitchell, a beautiful ex- DEA agent who's now working covertly for the Bureau of American Defense. Their paths keep colliding while investigating the same people, although with different methods. She's investigating an organized crime ring that may be funding terrorists, and he's looking for the persons resposible for destroying his whole family's life. Neither Terri or Nathan trust each other, but they may have to work together in order to save the world from a great evil.

This book started a little slow for me, especially the suspense part of the plot. At times it got a little confusing keeping all the players straight and it was hard to see where it was all heading. But the scenes with Nathan and Terri really cooked! That alone kept me interested. As I got further along the pieces started to fall into place, and I got involved in the suspense aspect as well. I guessed the bad guy right away, but his total involvement at the end really surprised me, and the ending was really tense and action packed!

I have no complaints with the romance between Terri and Nathan. When they got together they were smokin' hot! Nathan, with his long hair, ripped body, protective nature, and muscle car, was the quintesential tough guy, but with a heart of gold. Terri, with her wild hair, curvy body and sometimes mouthy attitude, took no guff, but had a marshmallow heart when it came to Nathan. I loved these two together! And when Terri convinced Nathan that there were people in the world other than his family who could care about him, and that he deserves his own chance at happiness, well, it brought tears to my eyes.

If you haven't read any of the other books in the B.A.D. series, don't worry, this one can definitely be read as a stand alone. And if you have read any of the others, you'll find that this one is much more detailed, fleshed-out, and complicated than all the others. I was pretty satisfied with this read, and I hope this series continues on this new path!

As a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s B.A.D series, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started Phantom in the Night. I knew this novel was going to be different from the other B.A.D books because this is the first collaboration with a co-author, Dianna Love, in this series. I knew it would this would have a different feel to it than the previous B.A.D books. I was right.
Honestly, it took me longer to get into the storyline. The pacing is slow in the beginning, but as the story progresses, the more it picks up and becomes more interesting. There were times that I was confused by where the storyline and characters were headed, but the intensity and love between the hero, Nathan and heroine, Terri kept me interested until the very end.

Terri Mitchell’s life has been turned upside down. As a DEA agent, she and her partner were double-crossed and both were viciously attacked. Her partner lost his life, and Terri was tortured and almost molested. As she is under investigation for the attack, she is recruited by B.A.D (Bureau of American Defense) and is working with the New Orleans police department to find and arrest those who are funding the actions of terrorist, and to find out who betrayed her and her partner. She is a very strong, smart, likable heroine who has developed some serious trust issues because of her past.

Nathan Drake is a man with integrity. He has sacrificed so much in his life for his family. He was once a Special Forces soldier who gave up the career he loved to protect his brother who made a horrible choice, and got into trouble with the law. Knowing his brother would never survive prison, he takes his place and serves time for a crime he didn’t commit. While in prison, his beloved mother dies, and his brother is murdered right before he is due to be released. Having nothing to lose, he sets out to find the person who killed his brother and ruined his family forever.

I absolutely loved Nathan. He is a man’s man. Sexy and strong-willed, he is a hero to be reckoned with. There were times I got tired of Nathan’s self- destructive determination to be the martyr for others, and sacrificing his own needs and happiness. Nathan has some serious trust issues of his own, and it was interesting to see how he and Terri came together. As their paths continue to cross throughout their investigation, their relationship begins to develop as they start to reluctantly rely and trust one another. They soon start bringing out the best in each other. Nathan starts thinking of his own happiness for once, and Terri finds the wall she has built around her heart and soul to start coming down.

This is the sixth and longest book in the B.A.D series. In my opinion this book was more complicated, intense and darker than the previous B.A.D books. It is not a book you can skim over, there is a lot going on and is more difficult to keep everything straight at times. It was more suspenseful ,and not as light-hearted and humorous as the previous books. It definitely can be read as a stand-alone book without being lost, or not understanding what the B.A.D agency is about.

I am looking forward to reading more B.A.D books written by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love. Phantom in the Night was an enjoyable read, and will hold a place on my keeper shelf.

OK. The BAD boys (and girls) are gearing up for some serious ass-kicking. "Phantom in the Night" is the longest BAD novel yet at 404 pages of almost non-stop action. The length of the book can certainly be attributed to the backstory buildup necessary for the next however many books. We learn about a wacko pseudo-religious intelligentsia group who are planning...wait for it...to take over the world! They are experimenting with biological weapons to destabilize governments and snatch control. So...if you can gulp that down, here's my take on this first story.

What a hero. Nathan has been a protector his entire life. His father died young and Nathan became the man of the family, caring for his genius but gentle twin and his mother. He joins the military (Special Ops of course) to earn money for his family and to send his brother to college (because a genius can't get a scholarship...oh wait, that was kinda snarky). His mother gets cancer and his brother gets duped and is facing a prison sentence. So our hero must save the day, right? He goes AWOL and trades places with his brother to serve his time in prison. His mother dies shortly before his release, and his brother is murdered the day before he gets out. He's mad, he's bad, and he's on the revenge warpath.

Terri is a strong DEA agent, or she was...until she and her partner were betrayed and ambushed. Her partner died and she was carved up and almost raped. To make matters worse, she's now under investigation as the possible leak in the horrific incident she barely lived through! So now she works for BAD (no story on how she was recruited, she just is) and is using her old contacts, BAD, and her fellow law enforcement personnel while on assignment as a 'contract police consultant' to hunt down the bastard who betrayed she and her dead partner. Got all that?

These two keep tripping over each other, and gradually end up working together (though not without plenty of distrust and possible double-dealing) to try and figure out what the hell is going on. They both have some pretty serious trust issues (DUH), not just with each other, but with all law enforcement/government agencies. The sex scenes are hot, the bad guys are really bad, the story is a rollercoaster of action, discovery, and well-paced plot building.

If you can get past a few irritating things (like those I snark about above) and you enjoy romantic suspense, you will be very happy with this book. I certainly plan to buy the next in the series to see how these sexy BAD boys save the world.

This novel by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love is an installment in B.A.D. series. This novel was published by Pocket books in 2008.

This series is more romantic suspense and not the paranormal style Kenyon and Love, as well are known for.

Terri, working with B.A.D. and as a consultant with the New Orleans Police Dept., is out to shut down a possible terrorist attack.
Terri's confidence is not at it's highest. She gets a bit defensive anytime her boss questions her on why she doesn't call in back up or request a partner. She thinks they doubt her ability to do the job.

Nathan, a military man, has sacrificed his good name and reputation for the sake of his twin brother. After switching identities with his brother and serving a two year prison sentence in his place, Nathan is released, only to discover his brother has been killed. Now he's out for justice, his way.

This puts him in the same boat with Terri as they continue to run into each other every time they catch a lead. Initially, they believe they are against some of the most dangerous drug lords ever, but soon find that is the least of their worries, as a large scale terrorist attack is what is really in the works.
Terri doesn't trust Nathan, but she can't really trust anyone else either, so the two of them work together to save the entire population from a deadly virus.
Oh, and of course there is a little sizzle between Terri and Nathan- to put it mildly.

I wish I could add a half star this one. I didn't have any preconceived notions going in. It just took me a long time to become engaged in the story. In fact, it wasn't until after passing the two hundred page mark that things really got going. That was the main reason for the lower rating.
Sometimes when two authors work together to write a novel it just doesn't work out so well. This might have been the case with this one. On my blog I have included a video interview of the two authors discussing the difficulties in co- authoring a book. The link to my blog is http://www/cluereview.blogspot.com

Holy crap this book was kick ass!!!

Normally I am not at all a fan of contemporary in any genre, most especially romance. However, because I knew that Sherrilyn Kenyon was such an amazing writer no matter what she writes, I gave this book and series a chance. Technically it is not the first book in the series, for Bad Attitude written only by Kenyon was actually book one. Add that to the fact that I was not at all certain how the story line and writing style would pan out being coauthored with Love, I was more than blown away!

I shouldn't have doubted that the novel would be shockingly amazing, for I knew initially how talented Kenyon is. Not only was I overwhelmingly surprised at how easily the book read, despite being military/government/protection agency themed, contemporary, and coauthored, I was in love the book, despite the fact that it took me several days to finish.

My initial thoughts about the book were unique, for at first it seemed as if the plot took quite a while to get rolling. However, upon really getting into the meat of the story, I quickly discovered that "slow start" was fundamentally necessary in the basic structure of the story line. Another aspect I did pick up on was that I could really tell this was not just a Kenyon novel. That fact was a bit hard to sort through, oddly. On the one hand, I adore Kenyon's writing style and did not want to see any variance from it. However, despite the tangible change I could feel, the book was powerfully amazing despite that. I will never go so far as to state that Love's style improved Kenyon's, for Kenyon is such a profound author that such would be impossible. Instead, Love's influence in the novel was beneficial to the overall context of the BAD series, and very much a positive point.

The plot was absolutely awesome! There is one -HUGE- plot twist that comes about towards the end of the book that I totally did not at all see coming. In fact, upon reading the part I literally gasped aloud. I am extremely good about picking up on plot turns and figuring out where a story line will be leading to. Such fact is why some novels can bore me to tears. However, when an author (or in this case, two authors) manages to throw a curb ball my way in a story that was very shocking to me, I'm doubly in-love with the story.

The characters were such fun to read, as well. Terri is very much an independently strong female heroine that I loved immediately. Likewise, Nathan is the epitome of what I love to see in a hero. He is strength, honor, and love all rolled into one adorable package. The supporting characters were equally fascinating for me, as well. Stoner was a new character on the scene and I am desperate to see more of him in later books. While I have seen Carlos in Bad Attitude, his character is significantly more fleshed out in this book, and I'm so excited to hopefully see much more of him in later BAD books!

The story line was very well written, as well. I felt it to be completely authentic in its structure and build up. I also love the fact that Love/Kenyon have opted to establish a single "Bad Guy" organization that will be able to carry this series further. This will no doubt allow for more characters and books that, until now, seemed somewhat stagnant. I am thrilled to begin the next book to this series, and can't wait to read Whispered Lies- though I'm currently waiting for the book to arrive in the mail. Hurry up USPS!

Praise God, hallelujah, for this book. It came at the perfect time for me. I have been having a really hard time with books lately, especially with heroines, but hopefully this book has pulled me out of my rut. I read this book now partly because I really, really wanted to, but also because I can always count on Sherrilyn Kenyon to give me a heroine I can love (with only two exceptions).

I love this book. I love the BAD Agency series. I love Sherrilyn Kenyon. I love Nathan and Terri and Carlos and Stoner. Damn, I am riding a high or something after finishing this book and actually liking it all the way through.

Nathan Drake was extremely sexy and intelligent. Sure, he was a bit to altruistic to be totally believable, but who is to say that, if my sister was about to be sent to prison that I wouldn't do whatever I could to prevent that, even taking her place? Hopefully it never, ever happens, but I suppose it could happen. What I could appreciate, though, was Nathan's devotion to his brother, one of the two people he loved most in the world, both of who are dead. Even if Terri couldn't really understand until the end when her grandma was being threatened, I can appreciate the fact that Nathan would do anything he had to in order to take down the man who murdered his twin. That dedication combined with his skills makes Nathan too sexy for his own damn good.

Like I said above, I have been having a really hard time with heroines lately. Really hard. Like, I have been hating every single one of them. For that alone, I was a tad bit nervous. However, like I also said above, I know that Sherrilyn Kenyon can always give me a heroine that I can love, or at least like. And I really did like Terri. There were times when she drove me nuts--like when she doubted Nathan--but I still loved her. I'm sure you can imagine how relieved I am to have still loved her by the end of the book! She was strong and brave, funny and intelligent, dedicated and loving to her family. She rocked!

I loved the other characters, too, especially Carlos and Stoner. As soon as I saw Carlos' name on the page...Well, I won't embarrass myself by telling you what I did. Suffice it to say that I got really excited. Carlos was the man who started my obsessive love of sexy men named Carlos, and let me tell you, I was definitely feeling that love again. As a matter of fact, I am going to start rereading his book as soon as I finish this review! Ahhhh, Carlos...*dreamy sigh*

Overall, this was a great book. Like I said, I love this series and I'm so glad I started reading it. Thank you, Sherrilyn Kenyon (and Dianna Love), for finally giving me a heroine I could love and hopefully getting me out of my bad book rut.

THIS IS NOT A PARANORMAL ROMANCE.

Tortured ex-militant turned vigilante? check
One bold as hell woman who doesn't take no for an answer and believe's she can hold her own? check
both of them constantly telling each other to back off? check

Overall this was a pretty decent book other than the constant back forth between the two. But it was a good break from paranormal/historical romance as it focuses more on the law enforcement side, combined with the threat of biological warfare.

Nathan Drake is a man on a mission after finding out his brother is killed and he wont stop until the man who murdered his brother is dead. Terri Mitchell is a woman who is also on a mission after her partner was killed on her last operation with the DEA. She now works for BAD and is trying to find out who set her and her partner up while also on her actual official case; Drugs, Bugs and Murder. The two meet and end up working together (in a way) while trying to stop each other since they are on opposite sides of the fence. But of course they find that working together can get the job done quicker (yay teamwork!) even if they don't totally trust each other, but the raunchy sex helps.

This is in no way a humorous romance, its dark gritty and full of injustice.

But it's also about two people with major trust issues finding each other and learning to trust and open up to someone again.

This did not catch me until a few chapters in. I haven't read any of the rest of the series, and I think the book stood alone pretty well. I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having read the earlier books in the series, and I actually did not even realize it was part of a series until after I read it. I teetered between a three and a four on this one, and only gave it a three because of the beginning.

Great Book

As always, this is just another example of a well crafted story. I always enjoy a well written story. The writing is very fluid. If I didn't know better, I would find it hard to believe that this is a mix of two authors, not just one.

If I could give this book a negative 5 stars rating, I certainly would. Where do I even start? The book is said to be of both romantic and detective genres, whereas it fails to be both.
First, it's romance is just so shallow that it sounds like high school loves while both characters are grown up detective and SpecOps agent. The authors do not spend too little time to polish the romance element except when describing the love-making scenes, which they wrote IN TOO MUCH DETAILS to more than 5 pages. TWICE.
Second, regarding the plot and action, I feel like the authors try so hard to create the suspense of the investigations but fall short of the likes of Sidney Sheldon's or Dan Brown's style. I am not sure if the authors know how to write in detective genre.
I have not grown respect or admiration for the characters in this book like I have in other novels. Waste of time. Highly NOT recommended.

The book had potential. A crime thriller and a romance novel. Definitely something up my alley. But honestly, giving the book three stars is a bit of a stretch.

First, the book felt like it was dragging. There were multiple times where I thought ok I’m near the end only to realise I was no where near the end.

The book also read quite disjointed. I understand that there were two authors for this book but I would have liked to see the writing styles blend a little better.

The romance was…. awkward? It felt forced and at times just a bit uncomfortable. It could have been something great but the two characters just felt wrong for each other and not the kind of wrong you want from a romance novel.

Exciting!
Very aggressive and adventurous. I found this to be a very gripping book in the series. I didn't like the narration of this one as much as the others... there were more mispronunciations. I feel like this one wasn't produced as well or proofed enough.

I loved the storyline, it was great. I believe I will read this one because I know I will love that better than the audiobook version.

I liked the storyline and get the tough talk but the h, with a major chip on her shoulder and talks tough (but it comes across as obstinate), makes constant TSTL decisions. The H does not help the cause as he stays closed-lipped and does not explain himself when 'telling' the h what he wants her to do.

I definitely liked the story better than the last book.

I listened to the audio book.

The reader was terrible.
It was like a foreigner trying to read in English.
Her emphasis was on the wrong syllables. The pauses were in the middle of the sentences.
And she axed things never once did they ask anything.
