Following a murder and a woman’s sudden disappearance, investigations into old crimes and new collide in an alarming novel of suspense by a Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author.
Detective Evan Bolton is gutted by his latest investigation. His friend and mentor, retired detective Rod McLeod, has been murdered, his body left in the trunk of a junkyard car. When McLeod’s daughter and grandson abruptly vanish, Evan knows it’s not a coincidence. Search and rescue canine specialist Rowan Wolff agrees as she and her dog, Thor, track the missing family.
The two cases converge in a puzzling twist. Evan discovers that McLeod has been reinvestigating old crimes—solved but not forgotten. Evan takes them on, one by one, and a disturbing suspicion forms that someone in law enforcement has something to hide and would do anything to keep those secrets buried.
But Evan and Rowan’s time is slipping away. They have to find the killer now. Before someone else disappears. Before someone else dies.

Evan has his hands full with his new case. He believes a murder and another case have alot in common. He needs to find the individual before someone else is killed. A good read.
I listened to the audio of this book which I note is the sixth in a series. I've not read the previous 5 and I don't think you need to. The characters do mention earlier exploits but it doesn't appear to bear much relation to the storyline.
Evan Bolton, a detective, has to find out why his retired mentor Rod McLeod has been killed and who has abducted Rod's daughter, Sophie. He has the help of girlfriend, Rowan, a dog handler who specialises in finding missing people. The story basically follows the investigation in which Evan himself becomes a target.
The series appears to be set in Oregon, a state I know very little about but they do seem to have terrible problems with people getting kidnapped. There is mention of Rowan's brother who was held for decades then another relative who was rescued much more quickly. And in this book there are several abductions.
This part of the plot seemed very unlikely as we're the kidnappers methods of extracting information and even the reasons for the abductions. In all, I spent quite a bit of time rolling my eyes and talking back to the book.
The actual narration by Teri Schnaubelt, was okay but fell into the category of female narrators who overdramatise. Her "male" voice was a tone I often find offputting - either in pain or constipated. I wish narrators would merely leave gaps between characters rather than "do" voices.
I also found the character of Rowan quite irritating as she would listen to what someone said then repeat it in her mind. It got a little annoying at the end.
For me, the book was just average as was the narration hence the 3 stars.
Thankyou to Netgalley and Brilliance Publishing for the audio advance review copy.
My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone.
This began with quite a blow to who would turn out to be one of the main characters. I was immediately invested in the story due to the emotions that each consequent character dealt with as well. Despite being a strong procedural law enforcement story, this really dug into my heart and had me reading at moments when I should have set it aside and got busy with life.
I enjoyed all the steps these characters took to work out who, what, where and why. There were some great twists along the way. Some I suspected were coming and others blindsided me completely. I love when a story can tangle me up in such a way.
While the romance is not in the forefront of the story, it is never forgotten. This author had it interwoven throughout the drama and danger in such a way it added to the intensity of the climax of the story and I loved every moment.
The Columbia River Series gives us additional stories from characters of Kendra Elliot’s other series. Detective Evan Bolton and SAR Rowan Wolff story continues in The Next Grave.
Evan is devastated when the body found in a trunk turns out to be his is old mentor retired detective Rod McLeod. He dreads having to inform Rod's daughter and grandson. Things get even bleaker when they arrive at her house and find both of them missing and a bloody crime scene.
Both Evan and Rowen are heavily involved in the investigation and the search not realizing their lives are now in danger. This story got intense as it went along and wow that edge of your seat ending.
Thank you to the publisher who allowed me to read this ARC. It his book was really good. You immediately get action at the start and it continues throughout. There was never a dull moment reading this book. And just when you think you knew who did it your turned for a loop. Definitely recommend reading this book.
What a page tuner! Man was I so stressed out during this book. Such a great addition to the series. I’m so excited for the next book. Rowan has become a favorite and of course Thor. I also love that Mercy made a quick appearance too.
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. Kendra is one of my favorite authors and I love how all the stories explore all the different characters we encounter and isn’t just tied to one or two people. Warning for violence with children. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
SYNOPSIS Detective Evan Bolton discovers the body of his mentor and friend, retired Rod McLeod, in the trunk of a car at a junkyard. Rod's daughter, Sophia, had attempted to contact Evan days earlier, and now it might be too late as both she and her son Zach are missing. As Evan investigates both cases, the puzzle becomes more complex, and his own life begins to unravel. Meanwhile, it becomes evident that someone is targeting Evan and his girlfriend, Rowan Wolff. Rowan, an expert in search and rescue alongside her canine partner, Thor, joins forces with Evan. Together, they must use their combined skills to locate Sophia and Zach before it's too late for everyone involved.
THOUGHTS THE NEXT GRAVE starts with a promising premise: a retired cop is murdered, his daughter and grandson go missing, and there's the complication of the daughter's recently released convict ex-husband. Added to this mix are several closed cases with missing evidence. All these ingredients should deliver the setup for good mystery, while featuring a dynamic couple determined to find the truth squarely at its core. This is my first Kendra Elliot book, and likely my last. The portrayal of Evan and Rowan's relationship is a central issue that undermines the entire story. Despite the author's insistence on their being a perfect match, neither character exhibits much personality or depth. Evan's chemistry with Nicole, a fellow detective is more evident than with Rowan, who is supposed to be his soulmate. Throughout THE NEXT GRAVE, the lack of compelling characters remains a significant drawback. Despite being praised as the "best detective" his mentor Rod trained, Evan often appears incompetent. The story unfolds disjointedly, wavering between rapid progression and slow pacing, which distracts and detracts from the mystery. When the identity of the murderer and their motives are finally revealed at the novel's conclusion, the resolution falls flat and disappoints. Overall, THE NEXT GRAVE fails to connect due to its underdeveloped characters and a plot that meanders aimlessly until its conclusion. RECOMMENDATION 2 Stars There is obviously an audience for Kendra Elliot’s style as THE NEXT GRAVE is highly rated. I personally found the book, its characters, and the overall mystery. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Police Procedural about an Oregon detective and his SAR canine specialist girlfriend as they team up to solve a retired detective's murder and search for his missing family.
5/5 stars: This is the sixth entry in Elliot's Columbia River series which is a Police Procedural Mystery set in Oregon which features a sheriff's department detective who's newest case, the murder of his friend and mentor, a retired detective, gets complicated when the victim's daughter and grandson vanish. He teams up with his girlfriend, a search and rescue canine specialist and her dog, to track the missing family and after discovering his friend had been reinvestigating old crimes—solved but not forgotten. He soon has a a disturbing suspicion someone in law enforcement has something to hide and will do anything to keep those secrets buried. With time slipping away, the two have to find the killer before anyone else dies. With plenty of twists and turns, Elliot writes a gripping fast-paced police procedural investigative tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the final reveal. I really like how Elliot's plot unfolds and the deft way the old cases weave together with the current day's events so effortlessly. The investigation is intriguing and the reveals are masterful. Additionally, Elliot's writing and character work is stellar; the characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable. It's great to catch up with Evan and Rowan, their colleagues and friends and family and I love seeing how they're building their relationship. Plus I loved Rowan's interactions with her dog, Thor, and their SAR work. There are some very tough topics tackled, so take care and check the CWs. While you could read this as a stand-alone, you'll gain so much more by reading the series from the beginning; so be sure to pick up book one, The Last Sister. Oh and if you want more of Mercy's story grab the first book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series, A Merciful Death. Elliot's a long-time favorite author, highly recommend!
I received this eARC thanks to Montlake in exchange for an honest review. Publishing dates are subject to change.
“Next Grave” is the 6th installment in the Columbia River series by Kendra Elliot but like her other series (Mercy Kilpatrick, Bone Secrets), this can easily be read as a standalone. The author always does such an excellent job of introducing her characters and their backgrounds each time — you can start this series midway and never feel like you’re missing anything.
The story opens with the discovery of a murdered body in a trunk in a junkyard that’s quickly identified as a retired detective, Rod McLeod. Current Deschutes County (Oregon) detective, Evan Bolton, is on the scene and he had been mentored by McLeod. Rowan Wolff, a canine search-and-rescue expert and her dog, Thor, also return from Columbia River #4 (not really a spoiler: you know the person with hero dog and the guy who’s attracted to her can’t possibly be bad dudes). Evan and Rowan are now a threesome (can’t ever exclude Thor!).
The central mystery is about the murder of the former detective and his adult daughter. Evan was close to both of them, so there’s personal anguish as he and his team investigate. As Evan keeps questioning suspects, suddenly he’s in the crosshairs of a sniper and an arsonist firebombs his home (don’t worry — it’s a harrowing moment, but I was confident that the author would never allow Thor to be hurt beyond a few glass splinters that Rowan treats before her own wounds).
It’s an edge of your seat thriller that kept me entranced. The lead characters are so easy to like and root for. I like Ms. Elliott’s books because although the characters have secrets, they usually never turn out to be disappointing unreliable narrators. You can trust the plot to resolve itself and the good guys mostly win. 5 stars! I’ll be looking for more Columbia River books and those related to the series.

This is my first ever Kendra Elliot book. I've been wanting to read her books for a very long time. And believe me when I say that the wait was worth it. Yes, I started with the 6th book in the series, but it didn't hinder me from understanding who everyone was and their relationship to one another. From the beginning, it opens up with a slam bang of action. A body found; a mystery uncovered. Where does Evan go from there?
Then you add on Rowan and her search and rescue dog Thor. What a great team they make together. You add Evan to that mix, and you have the perfect mix for fighting crime. This book was a conundrum inside of a conundrum inside of an enigma. I loved the fact that all of the mysterious elements were just like an onion, and you had to keep peeling back layers to get to the next part to understand anything.
You could feel the frustration, the wariness, the abject horror of what the detectives were dealing with and what they had found. To me, it made them human. And that just sucks me right into the story even more. Because it gives me a reason to become invested. Not only in their own lives but in what they're doing and the mysteries that they are trying to solve.
From the first word, I knew everything I needed to know about all of the characters, as if I had been with them since the beginning. As a reader, I appreciate that. And Kendra Elliot did it in such a way that it didn't feel like constantly regurgitated information like it does with some authors. She just gently let you find out as the story unfolded. I am really impressed with how well this story flowed and how well it was written.
And it hasn't left my mind since the book ended. That right there is another reason I love this book. I cannot wait to be able to read more from this series, or heck, any other of her series. I appreciate all of the details and being able to understand each person as they are. They really felt like they had come to life. I whole heartedly recommend this book. It was definitely worth the wait.
Thanks to Net Galley, the publishers, and to Kendra Elliot for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are honest and are completely my own.
"The Next Grave" by Kendra Elliot is a gripping and suspenseful novel that delves into the dark underbelly of crime and the relentless pursuit of justice.
This sixth instalment in the Columbia River Series shines a spotlight on Detective Evan Bolton and search and rescue canine specialist Rowan Wolff, along with her dog, Thor, as they navigate a complex and dangerous investigation that hits close to home.
The story begins with the brutal murder of Evan's friend and mentor, retired detective Rod McLeod, whose body is discovered in the trunk of a car in a junkyard. The situation escalates when McLeod's daughter and grandson mysteriously vanish, leading Evan and Rowan to believe that the two events are connected.
As they delve deeper into the case, they uncover a web of intrigue involving McLeod's reinvestigation of old crimes, suggesting that someone within law enforcement may be involved in a sinister cover-up.
Elliot's narrative is a masterclass in suspense, with each chapter revealing new clues and red herrings that keep readers guessing until the very end. The chemistry between Evan and Rowan, along with the invaluable assistance of Thor, adds a layer of warmth and humanity to the story, balancing the darkness of the crimes they investigate.
This novel is a standout addition to the Columbia River Series, offering fast-paced suspense, unexpected twists, and an emotional depth that resonates long after the final page is turned.
Fans of the series will be delighted to see Evan and Rowan take centre stage, and new readers will find "The Next Grave" to be an excellent entry point into Elliot's world of crime and punishment. With its blend of mystery, romance, and the unbreakable bond between humans and their canine companions, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good thriller.
Thank you to The Publisher Montlake ,The Author Kendra Elliot & NetGalley for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.
I’ve read a lot of Kendra Elliott’s work and enjoyed it all. Some plus or minus, but always worth my time. The Next Grave was no exception! In fact, it revealed, again, one of the hallmarks and my favorite attributes of Elliott’s books. She has the distinct, and I believe, unique ability to incorporate lesser known characters from previous books and turn them into the main characters of current work. That is one of the things that keeps her work fresh and interesting to me. In this case, Evan Bolton and Rowan Woulf from preceding stories paired up and starred in this one. K. E. did this with ease and a smooth touch. It was as if Evan and Rowan moved into my neighborhood, starting working locally and became a vital part of the community. So much so that I cared about what happened to them more than I did to my own real-life neighbors.
Evan quickly became embroiled in a murder investigation that hit close to home. Rowan, along with her tracking dog, Thor, played her own part in the investigation. This is one of the places where sticklers to police procedure might find fault. (I’m not sure any law enforcement agency would permit a civilian to be so closely involved in their work.) For me, not a problem. I found her role to add to the reality, rather than detract.
As with several other of Elliott’s books, she took me down a dead end road while I was trying to figure out the behind the scenes co-conspirator. I was sure I had the culprit identified. I was wrong! Definitely, made it worth the read and the four stars I rated this book. I am looking forward to other adventures! Maybe some other characters will make the jump from previous books. Thank you NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for offering the ARC.
The sixth Columbia River book begins with Evan Bolton discovering the body of his friend and mentor Rob McLeod in the trunk of a car in a junkyard. He was tortured before his death. Then it is discovered that his daughter has disappeared. At first, it is assumed that his grandson was taken too but he returns from a couple of days with friends and is placed in a remote location with friends until his mother is located.
With the death of a someone in law enforcement, the pressure to find the killer is extreme. Many are going through Rob's old cases and the strange assortment of case files in his home office to try to identify who would want him dead.
Evan is facing additional pressure at work when fingerprints discovered at both Rob's house and his daughter's house indicate that he was on the scene. Rob knows the prints indicate someone probably in law enforcement is trying to frame him. However, he's relieved of duty and then kidnapped.
His live-in lover Rowan is certain that the same person who killed Rob has taken him. She and her search and rescue dog Thor have been involved since the beginning of the case when she was called in to see if she could track the missing daughter. And she's called in again later when the grandson goes missing from the supposedly safe location.
This story was fast paced, filled with action, and filled with tension as law enforcement tries to find answers before it is too late.
I loved the relationship between Evan and Rowan. I thought Rowan's emotions when Evan disappeared, harrowing though they were to read, were realistic. Fans of suspense will enjoy this story.
The Next Grave is the sixth installment of the Columbia River series by Kendra Elliot. I read the rest of the series earlier this year and was so excited to get a copy of this before it’s published! The series follows recurring characters from Elliot’s other series who are all law enforcement in the Pacific Northwest. In this book, the focus has turned to Evan Bolton, a detective in a small Oregon town, and his girlfriend Rowan Wolff, a search and rescue canine specialist. This book fit in perfectly with the rest of its series, with an expertly balanced storyline full of drama, police procedure, and well-known characters. This is the fourth book of the series that Evan has been a part of, but his first time being the main character. I really enjoyed the pacing of the plot, which was quick and intense. Every chapter opened new questions Evan had to answer, and it felt like I was racing against a clock to get to the end and make sure everything was okay. The Columbia River series is classified as romantic suspense, and The Next Grave is the perfect example. We get to know Evan and Rowan and see their character development through a plot-heavy storyline. They’re interesting individually and as a couple, and their chemistry helps drive the already accelerated plot. Elliot’s talents as a writer shine in her couples. Each couple’s dynamics are unique and realistic, and stay true to the characters’ personalities. Her attention to detail is what makes it easy to remember everything in a 3-part integrated series of 21 books. But it’s her skill at showing the variety of emotions and thoughts of several characters at once that continue to capture my interest. Thanks to Netgalley and Montlake for the free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
I really, really liked this "mystery/suspense with just enough romance" novel by a new-to-me author. I'm a little surprised hire much I liked it, actually, because I wasn't fully sold at first. Evan and Rowan are not new characters, it seems, both having appeared in previous novels by this author. In fact, they're together already here, and any drama comes from external forces. The romance in this story comes from the enduring love they already have for each other.
So there's the mystery of Evan's mentor's murder, and the whodunit soon turns suspenseful. The plot keeps you guessing though most of the reveal ends up being a little anticlimactic. I kept thinking/hoping there was another culprit. That said, I never guessed who, and that's rare for me.
But can we talk about the dog? Thor rather steals the show, as any good canine character will do. I do feel like his character went missing a little towards the end though.
Another vague question mark for me was how Rowan—not a cop—was privy to so much about the case. An effort is made to explain it by suggesting everyone knows it's irregular, but it did seem a little convenient.
Anyway, a good plot that isn't either rushed or draggy and great characters make this book a winner. I'll definitely read more by this author.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks.
4.5* Another solid procedural, although Evan's not quite Mercy Thomson.
I think when you've read a prolific series like the Mercy Thompson books, impatiently waiting for the next to come out, and the series ends, so you're reduced to relying on glimpses of her - or collab novels like the excellent Echo Road with Melinda Leigh, 07/24 - everything else pales a little in comparison. So, although this book is in the same universe, and is a solid tale, as competent as he is, Evan isn't quite Mercy. He lacks her decisiveness and gut feelings, and perhaps, too, as a female reader, I'm more excited about a strong female lead, which is my bad. But, this is still a very good tale with unexpected danger, certainly more than the blurb lets on. This series will continue to be an autobuy for me, and I have the next on preorder already.
There's good suspense, as the killer has to be someone in law enforcement, but the surprisingly mundane person whose actions started what snowballed into corruption and deaths, will surprise you, and there are enough red herrings and subtle passing mentions that you'll miss the bad guy/s. There are several twists, and it's nice to see more of Nicole, who I'm pretty sure will end up as a lead in a future tale, inserted organically, not just plonked in as a hint. It's another great addition to this Mercy Thompson spinoff series.
ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Montlake for my reading pleasure.
The Next Grave by K. Elliot, published by Montlake, is the highly, highly anticipated sixth book in the Columbia River Series. I was patiently waiting for Rowan and Evan to get their book, and voila, here it is. Detective Evan Bolton and dog handler Rowan Wolff with Thor are a couple for some time now. They had their first appearance in The First Death and I couldn't wait for their story. Evan's latest case is his hardest to digest so far, it's the murder of his mentor and friend. When his daughter and grandson vanish too, everything gets more complicated, more complex, more confusing for the investigator and his team. By his side, Detective Noelle Marshall, also already kknown from the Mercy Kilpatrick Series. Everything is connected, is a tangled web and soon they run out of time. The author masterfully placed miniscule only hints and kept me in high suspense right from the start, breathlessly awaiting the next hint, til the very unexpected last turn. And I was breathlessly speeding along with story and characters. Victims begin to stack up just like alleged proof against one of their own. This book left me with a serious bookhangover. I'm tiptoeing around this review for a few days now after fiinishing this 2024 fav read of mine, struggling a bit to find the appropriate words. I highly recommend the book and the series.
An exciting new novel in the Columbia River series! Detective Evan Bolton investigates a report of a suspicious-smelling car in a junkyard. In the trunk, he is devastated to find the body of his mentor, Rod McLeod. The retired county sheriff’s detective was shot and dumped. He dreads delivering the news to Rod’s daughter and grandson. Evan proceeds to their home only to find them missing as well. He begins searching Rod’s old cases to find any clue on what is going on and who the murderer is. Evan’s girlfriend Rowan Wolff joins him in the frantic search to find answers. Will they get a break before another murder happens?
I haven’t read any previous books in the Columbia River series, but I had no problem figuring out the characters. I particularly liked Rowan’s search and rescue dog, Thor. Rowan has a large family, and I enjoyed the interactions between siblings. Ratcheting tension and surprising twists kept me on edge until the end.
Looking forward to new entries in the series and I will go back to search out the previous books. I recommend to those who enjoy K-9 search and rescue novels like the ones by D L Keur and Margaret Mizushima. If you like Melinda Leah, John Galligan or Bruce Borgos you will also enjoy the Columbia River series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the digital ARC!
The Next Grave (Columbia River, Book 6) by Kendra Elliot is such a good addition to the series. The story grabbed me from page one and didn't let up until the satisfying end.
Kendra Elliot is a great storyteller. The characters come to life off the page. It's nice to see the relationship between Rowan and Evan develop.
In this installment, Detective Evan Bolton is gutted by his latest investigation.
Evan discovers that McLeod has been reinvestigating old crimes. Evan takes them on, one by one, and a disturbing suspicion forms that someone in law enforcement has something to hide and would do anything to keep those secrets buried.
I would recommend this book and this author. I am looking forward to more in this series. The book has relatable characters who are developed well, mystery and intrigue that keep you reading, and solid storytelling by the author.
Kendra Elliot is a must read for me. I love immersing myself in the stories she creates. I look forward to new books in her series because it’s like catching up with old friends. The Next Grave is the sixth installment in the Columbia River series. What I love about her series is that someone can pick up a book and begin reading it even if they did not know it was part of a series. Although I recommend reading every book, Elliot is able to write a new story while weaving in information from past books to help the reader understand what or why something is happening.
Evan and Rowan take center stage in this installment as they investigate a murder and search for a missing woman. Thor, Rowan’s search dog, is right there in the story as well and is one of my favorite characters. Through the search and twist and turns in the plot, you can feel the desperation to find the missing woman and solve the murder. Evan and Rowan’s relationship is on full display and shows their professionalism and dedication to each other. I am always hooked from the first page of Elliott’s books. I find it best to go in blind and just enjoy as the story unfolds.
Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC an exchange for my honest review.
I missed reading several of the first books in this series but quickly got hooked on Detective Evan Bolton and Rowan with her search and rescue dog. They have traumatic events in their past with deep scars. This makes them both quite relatable and particularly good at their jobs. Both are empathetic to victims. They live in Oregon, the area has rough terrain and beautiful hiking trails. The death of Bolton’s close friend and mentor has him shaken. The author’s crime scene descriptions are etched in my memory, very brutal. Nothing is what it seems and more lives are in jeopardy. Investigations from prior criminal cases seem to be connected, the puzzle pieces just don’t come together. The bond between Rowan and her highly trained dog is moving. The search for clues relies heavily on his ability to track missing people. The plot is filled with time sensitive situations and unforeseen obstacles. It kept me searching for answers right along side them. I look forward to the next in the series. Thanks to Montlake for providing an Advance Reader Copy (via NetGalley) of “The Next Grave” (Columbia River #6) by Kendra Elliot, publication expected 12/09/2024. The honest, personal thoughts and opinions expressed here are mine alone, given without compensation.
4.5 stars. Another smash from Kendra Elliot. Honestly, she can do no wrong! I have read the Callaghan and McLane books which share a series end with the start of the Columbia River series. I love how her characters all interact and cameo in each others stories. I now need to go back and read Mercy's stories to fill in the back story.
This book flows so well and never ever has the reader thinking that they know the ending but the character hasn't caught up yet. It is planned superbly and the plot, perpetrator and ending gets revealed bit by bit at just the right time.
The love stories aren't overly done and unrealistic, they are a beautiful, modern take and thoroughly well done. I really enjoyed these characters and would like to see them again, as well as Noelle, which Kendra hinted at in her acknowledgements after the story finished.
My big thanks to Netgalley, Kendra Elliot and Montlake for the opportunity to read this book. All opinions are my own.
Of the stories I've read in this series so far, and I admit I read out of order, this one is my favorite. I first met both Evan and Rowan in The First Death, but I know they've both individually popped up in other books, which I need to research so I can go back and start at the beginning.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. I tried hard to pick up on any clues that would help me figure out who was doing all these things, but I was stumped. When it finally revealed who the killer was, and why no one could have figured out who it was, I was impressed! That was a nice twist.
Admittedly, there are some hard parts to read, the killer was particularly nasty and evil. But Evan and his team, including Rowan, never gave up on trying to figure it out.
My heart was in my throat for the last 10% of the story, and even after reading the final sentence, it was still beating rapidly. Bravo, Ms. Elliot! What a great story!
If you’re looking for a book with suspense, mystery, twists, romance and great characters, The Next Grave is your next read. If you’ve read previous Elliot books you’ll enjoy meeting up with characters from her series of books, but this book easily is a standalone. Then again when you finish reading The Next Grave, you might decide you want to go check out some of those earlier novels. You’ll enjoy them. Detective Evan Bolton and his girlfriend Rowan Wolff are the main characters shocked by the murder of Evan’s mentor and friend, retired detective Rod McLeod. When his daughter and grandson disappear there is real concern. Evan investigates the murder while the missing family members are sought by Rowan, a search and rescue specialist. Lives are in danger, threats are thrown, suspicions of who is the guilty party are rampant with a lot of emotional chaos threatening the story's characters. Thank you Montlake and NetGalley for the ARC.
I just love this series and especially this book. I love Rowan and Evan, but I think I might love the relationship between Rowan and her dog Thor even more! I'm more of a cat person myself, but every time I read about Rowan and Thor, it makes me want a dog of my own.
This story was the kind of story that had me tense and full of anxiety almost the whole time. A lot of suspense and build up and it was made worse when Evan went missing during an investigation. The story starts with Evan investigating the murder of his mentor, retired police officer Rod. As if that weren't bad enough, when another officer went to notify his daughter, it was discovered that she was missing. The only bright spot in all of this for Evan was Rowan. As the investigation continued, there were more questions than answers, but one thing was clear, someone within the department couldn't be trusted.
This was a complicated story that felt personal. I hate what happened to Evan but loved seeing how much he and Rowan were there for each other. I mostly read romance, so I'm a sucker for a good romance in a mystery/suspense book. I hope we get more of their story soon.
The murder of a revered retired cop. The kidnapping of his daughter. Both events are being investigated by Detective Evan Bolton, and he’s got a personal stake in finding the killer – the murdered cop was his mentor.
With his live-in-live, canine specialist, Rowan Wolff, and Evan’s partner, the case takes various twists and turns. Evan is accused of tampering with evidence and thrown off the case. The house he shares with Rowan is firebombed. Then, Evan is kidnapped along with the murdered cop’s grandson.
Rowan and Evan’s partner race against the clock to find Evan and the boy, but will they be too late?
This book had so many twists I felt like a pretzel at the end! But it was sosos good, just like all Elliot's books. Thanks, NetGalley and Montlake for a sneak. peek 4.5 well-deserved stars!
The Next Grave is another suspenseful book in the Columbia River series. Detective Evan Bolton is devastated when his old friend and retired mentor Rod McLeod is found murdered after also being brutally tortured. Rod’s daughter and grandson are also missing. With his girlfriend Rowqn and her tracker dog helping to track them down it becomes apparent that Rod was investigating an old case which has caused these events. When Evan is shot at whilst talking to a possible suspect all manner of things happen as he also finds himself being targeted at work. Fast paced and exciting there are many twists and turns and the final scenes are jaw dropping. With a great cast of characters that add much depth to this thriller which flows well, a real page turner. My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
