Showed up for the big blue lover, was given a side bonus of Akkadian and Sumerian character history. Here for the intersection of romance and nerdy historical moments!

my favorite thing about a blue love interest is the way their cheeks turn purple when they blush

MAIN CHARACTER NAMES AND AGES
Autumn (~30) | Irdu (several thousand years)

FEATURES
∘ demon-human romance
∘ easily embarrassed and completely infatuated mmc
∘ light femdom
∘ rebellion
∘ “Yours, love, always yours.” in response to her saying, “You’re mine.”

REVIEW
Full disclosure, this is probably my third or fourth reread of Demon Lover. I’ve been in a reading slump, and what better way to help me through it than revisiting an old favorite?

Irdu made me howl with laughter, and I admired how open Autumn’s heart was. Every time I read the scene of the demon getting startled and tangled in cords, I giggle.

The dynamic between them was PERFECT.

The introduction of myths and ancient civilizations went completely over my head. The way the arc was conceptualized and executed blows my mind because how does someone come up with that??? I have been and always will be in awe of Heather Guerre’s works.

Anyway, I adore this book. From Autumn and Irdu as characters to the crusade(s) against tyrants to the flabbergast, self-conscious demon—it is a masterpiece.

OW/OM DRAMA sort of but not really OM — Autumn’s cheating ex left a mark on her (she doesn’t have feelings for him anymore), and he’s seen in person for a brief moment, but he is literally so inconsequential it doesn’t even matter
CHEATING none
THIRD ACT BREAKUP no but Irdu is fearful for Autumn’s well-being and is willing to take drastic measures to ensure her safety
ENDING HEA — epilogue with a very small time jump

POV singular (fmc) / third person
SPICE LEVEL 4.5 / 5
RATING 5 / 5

*3.5* The mythology, history, languages and magic was done very well.

The story is exactly what the title says. One night during a steamy dream, the h interacts with her mysterious lover. He is shocked as no one has ever 'woken up' on him before. They begin to chat and a friendship develops.
“Nobody ever touches me—except to fuck me.” He squeezed her hand. “It surprised me, to feel your touch without the urgency of arousal with it. But I enjoyed it. I am never touched in kindness, in gentleness, in curiosity. Don’t stop, please.”
I really loved this overall story, but there were moments where the flow didn't work as well and something felt a little off. I absolutely loved the overall concept of the story! This author's ability to write unique characters, unique storylines with an interesting plot continues to impress me.

Who would have thought that an adult romance read with an incubus sex demon slipping into the h's dreams for some schmexy fun could turn out so dang cute?

description

Yes, I found this to be an adorable romance, but I was also happy we got some interesting mythology and historical background as part of the book too.

Check it out if you have KU!

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

The mythology/history and world-building.

That there was some magic.

The consent.

The cinnamon roll hero.

Interesting hero with a interesting backstory.

Some sweet/cute parts.

➖ What I disliked:

Some parts dragged and were a little bit stilted (mostly the middle part of the book/story.)

The end of the book/story (finale) is kind of rushed.

The pacing is somewhat strange.

Some parts were cringey.

Only from the heroines POV.

The heroine felt kind of generic/formulaic and uninteresting/underdeveloped compared to the hero.

Repetitive.

Rushed romantic build up and chemistry, that also lacked some depth.

Some inconsistencies with both the main characters.

I picked this up after reading a review and recommendation by someone else, and I totally got sucked in right from the beginning. I couldn't put it down. It was sweet and sexy, and it had me smiling to myself in quite a few scenes. I absolutely loved Irdu. He was a mix of shy, innocent, ferocious, and commanding. I loved it when he let himself go when he wanted Autumn. This was a nice, light read.

*** Book Q & A***

* How did the book make you feel?: I absolutely devoured and adored this book. It’s such a unique and creative take on such a fascinating premise. The cover might have driven me off, but the good reviews pulled me in. I can’t say enough good things! This book could’ve been creepy, but it wasn’t at all.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: The writing is superb and I couldn’t put it down. I loved all of the historical and mythological references. The chemistry was smoldering.
* What did you think about the main characters?: I loved Irdu for his selflessness and humbleness. I loved the h for her open-mindedness and determination. They started off hot and heavy because of the whole incubus thing, but the relationship and trust developed organically. I was rooting for them!
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: The sex scenes were hot and I loved how genuine their feelings felt toward one another.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: incubus, demon, love conquers all
* What did you think about the ending?: I loved it!
* What is your impression of the author?: I’m now a fan!

Holy hell, i loved this so much.

Who’d have thought you could fall in love with a cinnamon roll of a demon? One who loves getting bossed around, who is enslaved to serve you… but who is so, SO much more. This short, HOT, sweet read flipped all of my switches and it’ll be in my reread list.

Excellent writing and editing for a self-pub. Great research into ancient cultures and mythology as well. And the heroine- i loved her spirit!

More good than bad, but I found it very repetitive and stilted. Each night they were together was really just varied bits of the same old dialogue.

Autumn: Irdu, I don't want you to do anything you don't want to do. There must be something that makes you happy.

Irdu: Whatever makes you happy, makes me happy.

Autumn: But I hate that you are enslaved to my pleasure.

Irdu: Your pleasure is what gives me life. I would do anything for you.

Autumn: Ok, cool. Let's bang.

I found Autumn bordered on TSTL and she got rather annoying by the end. She would have benefit from a bit more fleshing out, but I guess within the limitations of the novella length it wasn't deemed necessary. Irdu was sweet and all about that consent (he was also rocking some rather interesting piercings), but I didn't feel a sense of depth to their relationship that would have made this a knockout for me.

Loved the beginning, got kind of bored in the middle, ending was rushed. I think it would’ve helped book if it were longer, I wanted to feel Autumns loneliness a little more especially in the beginning. I kind of glossed over all her research cuz I had no idea what she was talking about. Since she was in the underworld basically resurrecting the dead it might have been cool for her to seek out her dad or grandparents since they were mentioned multiple times throughout book. Ending was kind of anticlimactic mostly because I didn’t understand the whole cuneiform/tattoo things. Like she read a couple research papers online and met with a linguist for coffee and she’s able to basically dismantle the underworld? Meh.

I’ve become a fan of this author.

We all have known loneliness at some point in our life. I think that’s why I liked both Autumn and Irdu immediately. They were both lonely and such a lovable characters.
For an Incubus Irdu was shy, awkward and so damn endearing. I loved him. Meanwhile Autumn was kinda badass. Loved how the story unravelled. It was unpredictable.
A very well written book with lovely protagonists and solid plot. I wanted more of them in epilogue.

No ow drama and standalone.
Recommended and included in KU.

I am shocked and appalled that there are not more reviews for this book.

Autumn is a lonely artist who is fresh from a bad breakup. At night when she dreams she is visited by a incubus named Irdu. At least until she calls him out on it. 🤣 This is a sweet and sensual read. Though there was plenty of sex, (I mean, one of the mc’s is an incubus) the scenes are not overwhelming. They are satisfying and work to build the relationship between the characters.

Really, I loved it. And if you did too, write a review. The book deserves it. 💙

I really needed a break from all the high angst romances I’ve been reading and this was everything I was looking for.
This is VERY SPICY even tho I skimmed some of it I still stuck around for the story. It was short and extremely sweet, just what I wanted.

Spice? Yes.
Fluff? Yes.
HEA? Thankfully, yes!

What a disappointment... especially after LOVING the author's Tooth & Claw series. I couldn't stand the FMC. She was annoying, clingy, repeated herself way too often. The MMC was cute... a complete cinnamon roll of a sexy giant blue demon. And although the sex scenes were VERY hot, the dialog between Irdu and Autumn was insufferable. I just couldn't do it anymore. I physically cringed with every conversation. Plus, I don't like when sex happens before feelings develop in romance novels. Maybe this was meant as erotica? Idk and at this point, I don't care.

This was incredibly sweet. I loved Irdu and how he plays with his tail and is so uncertain and pursues consent no matter what. He’s caring and loving and just the best.

This is a shorter book that deals with some fascinating mythology.

I love their story. It’s fun and sweet.

This was one adorable and spicy read. A perfect palette cleanser that just leaves you with a smile on your face. The MMC is just so sweet and bashful. I mean, a demon blushing? 😍😍😍

Also it’s nice to see a FMC know what she wants and be very possessive. She knew right away that this man we hers and was ready to fight for him.

This was sooooo good.

I'd seen my friends reading it and giving great reviews. I'd seen it on a femdom list.
And yet I was like... eh.
Decided to give it a go and why did you people not push me to do it sooner???!!!

Our FMC, Autumn, is great. Loved the focus on loneliness and feeling isolated. Loved that she was determined to save her man.

The MMC, Irdu, is also amazing. The sweetest, most awkward, best service top around.

I warn you. If you look at my highlights from this story, it's pure self-indulgence of all the gentle femdom comments.

This was great.

A weird, but cute book? Almost like a reverse take on Persperone and Hades with demon mythology
I don't really know what i expected. Almost DNF it many times, since the demon sex weirded me out. But the mythology and history was incredibly fascinating, definitely the highlight of the story for me. and Autumn and Irdu were cute.

Graphic designer Autumn falls (in a pretty insta-lovey way) for incubus Irdu, then looks for a way to save him from his enslavement in the Underworld.

I liked this but I want to make it clear that I read it while zonked from stress and tiredness so, you know... take it with a grain of salt.

He's an incubus❗ who's platonic-touch-starved❗, literally the embodiment of a golden retriever, shy-awkward (blushes, breaks eye contact, and fidgets with his tail (YES. TAIL)(and he whimpers 🙂‍↕️)), and loves her to death. He keeps saying, "I'm yours," "Tell me I'm yours." (The "you're mine" men can go home now. Y'all are lame af.)

I'm going to cry he was so cute I'm combusting as we speak💥🤺

Literally don't understand the average low rating... Just say you boring af and don't fw cute af demons 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

🐵What I expected:
Dominant experienced incubus demon with either an arrogant or blasé attitude
🙈What I got:
Sweet boi with a mighty tongue

🐵What I expected:
Hot mysterious dream-sex similar to: First Grave on the Right
🙊What I got:
Barely any dream-sex, definitely not mysterious

🐵What I expected:
Epic underworld lore/drama
🙉What I got:
Lucid dreaming and sharpies

The story is cute but I had different expectations🦍
