Meet your new favorite food critics: a chubby wolf named Mita Jiro and a ripped tiger named Yanagi Kagetora. Kagetora used to eat to live, but that changed when he met Jiro--who lives to eat! Jiro is more than happy to help his striped friend explore the restaurants and delicacies tucked within their city, and he enjoys all their finds with great relish. There's nothing better than a hot meal to bring two (animal) people together in this deliciously illustrated story.
This turned out to be better than I expected. To be honest, I wasn’t really enjoying the artwork or the storytelling but for some reason it came together at the end and I really appreciated the character dynamics and the possibility of where the story could go.
This was so cute and fluffy! We follow two friends, a chubby wolf and a buff tiger. Both share an unlikely friendship and love of food. It shares their daily lives as they try different kinds of food. This was so fun and sweet! I love the characters, it put a big smile on my face. Highly recommended.
Unfortunately finished this one feeling disappointed. It was very confusing and disjointed, with no clear plot. I enjoyed the art style and most of the characters, but overall it wasn't a very good read. The art style is really what took it from a 2 star rating to a 3 star. I'll probably read volume 2 just to see if it improves, but I don't have high hopes.
2.5 This one was really subpar. I liked the style, loved a fat main character, but the story tried and failed to be so many things that it just deflated into forgettable nothing. Is it a story of friendship? Kinda, but the characters don't have many meaningful interactions. Is it a foodie/food writing story? Kinda, but the food itself isn't really the focus. Every meal the characters eat is basically the same. Is it a slice of life? Kinda, but there's some half-baked underlying drama that offsets the whole purpose of a plotless slice of life. Is it a comic strip style manga? Yeah, for about 3 pages, and then it stops. Is it a drama? Kinda, but the hints at backstory really overdramatise what's really happening. Kagetora is lonely and always wanted a relationship with his older brother, who was too busy for him. That's fine, but it's framed as if someone died or there was some huge betrayal, so the actual backstory just seems silly because it's taken too seriously.
All the characters are simple with easily recognizable tropes to set them apart: the bro, the broody one, the jolly one, the nice one, and nuance is added with time and development. This works perfectly fine for everyone but Jiro, who's entire personality is steamrolled by the "I Love Ramen" trait. Translation: the author doesn't understand that fat people have personalities outside of eating, so instead of character nuance, Jiro just interrupts any potentially interesting interaction with some stupid comment about ramen. This completely destroys his character.
And finally, because I guess the author didn't think the reader was smart enough to grasp scene to scene changes and interpreting the extremely simple on-screen actions, they forced in a human character to narrate at random intervals, starting about halfway through the first volume. It's extremely stupid, out of place, and everything this character says is redundant. Also the art style does not shine in the slightest with human characters.
For such a short manga, it was piled high with more problems than positives, and the art of the food wasn't even very appetizing.
A slice of life manga about a tiger and wolf who are unlikely friends and bonded over ramen.
I don't understand the appeal of this manga. Mita Jiro and Yanagi Kagetora seem like 2 guys who need to get a life. They go to work, occasionally do things like go to the beach, but their lives revolve around food. It was also confusing about whether Yanagi was the doctor or if that was his brother??? Either way, I didn't like that he's constantly smoking on page (and especially if he is the doctor). They also have friends who go to the beach to ogle women and seem rather shallow. Not my cup of tea. I won't be reading any more in this series.
Notes on content: Language: A handful of minor swears. Sexual content: As mentioned, the guys ogle some female characters in bikinis at the beach. Violence: None Ethnic diversity: Humans are Japanese LGBTQ+ content: There's speculation about whether the tiger and wolf (both male) are a couple or not. Other: Lots of smoking on page.
21/10/2024 3 ⭐️ I don’t often read manga surrounding food or foodies but I’m starting to think I should because now I’m really craving some hot ramen!!
Wished Koizumi-san and her entourage were furry? This is that! (but containing less thinly-veiled lesbianism)
I don't think Ramen Wolf is a pun on anything, but Curry Tiger (kare-tora) is a deliberate mishearing of his name, Kagetora (Dark Tiger). So unfortunately, that's literally all I could think of for the entire book.
Still, I'm apparently a huge sucker for "food porn," since I loved reading this and will eagerly hunt for the next volume! Even when they weren't actually eating ramen or curry!
4.75★ - near perfect, aside from the tiger brothers…I wish that was explained earlier or the two looked more distinct, because I got real confused and thought kagetora was the doctor. apparently it’s his brother, who he seems a bit estranged from? still not 100% sure.
overall though, this was such a heartwarming story about found family…essentially two like-minded (or like-stomached?) friends who find so much joy in eating with each other. love the relationships and side characters so far as well, and the ramen / curry descriptions made me so hungry!!

Struggling with rating this one because I like the art and certain elements… but if I hadn’t already purchased it, I probably wouldn’t bother to read the second volume.
It was like a directionless ship. There was no sense of cohesion or progression. The final flashback (which confusingly had a SECOND flashback set within it), kinda tried to pull things together. But everything leading up to it was so disconnected that the attempt didn’t really work.
Didn’t hate it, but definitely left feeing disappointed.
This had the potential to be genuinely adorable, but there was barely any plot. The plot that existed was really convoluted and confusing. I also just got the impression that the manga itself is hardly body positive. Did I want to see anthropomorphic animals at the beach -- sure having fun, but I didn't think I'd see a full page of them shirtless. I genuinely did not like that. It was borderline furry content to me. It just wasn't for me. I did notice, however, that the only one of the main characters that didn't get a fun page spread was the chubby wolf. Fatphobia? I don't know. Maybe?
A "story" about two animals who like to eat. They eat. Eventually, two more characters show up. They also talk about eating, but not in a fun or instructional way. Then more characters. Eventually, there is an eating contest. I'm not sure why. There is no plot, no character development, no charm, no humor. For some reason it's rated 13+. I would recommend it as a book to teach five year olds to hate reading.
This manga only took me two days to read because I felt myself going into a reading slump. Some of the pages can be quite busy, part of me wishes the panels were bigger so the manga would feel like it has more space. The story does get a tad bit confusing between time near the end of the first volume. Hoping the the next volume is better. If it isn’t I will stop reading the series. But it wasn’t bad and it was a quick read. My favor scene was the food competition
im wondering if there's more to read before vol 1 though because a lot of the side characters just show up, there's no real introduction. it also took me too long to realize the doctor was the older brother. also am unsure if the eating competition woman is the same as curry tigars childhood friend. but i feel like they would've said something to each other at the beach????
Two anthropomorphic guys are ready to grab a bite in a ramen shop however the place is closed for other reasons and they went to a curry shop since the other guy is really hungry. The one who is into ramen is Jiro while Kagetora is into curry. I like their relationship as friends and as I read that it makes my stomach growling for noodles hehe.
!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! It's just gay people hanging out and eating food together --- that is THE ULTIMATE FANTASY, darling!!!!!! The final chapter was also remarkably constructed, I was really caught by the author's use of paneling in order to weave us through the thoughts and memories which our big ol Curry Tiger is going through at that very moment in time. MWAH goo'stuff :3
As a foodie I can relate to the wolf character as well as friendships with food outings. The bond between the two characters is really well executed as well as intriguing supporting characters. Who knows, I may follow this slice of life manga.
