Witch Bound #1

The WitchSlayer

Rate this book
When Amalia’s cat brought home a strange flying lizard during a terrible storm, she had no idea that it was a Dragon. Or that he would save her from burning at the stake, only to imprison her in his lair when she saw his human face. Now she is stuck in this cave with a moody, hot-tempered, and arrogant warrior – one who has killed her kind by the dozens.

She expected to feel trapped, but he somehow makes her feel unbelievably... safe.

Rurik’s only goal is to kill the Dark Witch, Strolguil the Vast. He never expected to find himself in a White Witch’s home in need of healing, or that she would be completely oblivious about his kind, or her own. He intends to abandon her, a lowly Witch, to her fiery fate, but he can’t ignore his blood-debt after she saves him.

Nor can he ignore the fierce desire that she grows in him when she roams free inside his lair.

However, there are Dark Witches afoot, and Rurik isn’t sure if he can shed years of hatred to trust the enchanting woman he has in his keeping.

Mah dudes. This book will make you gasp. You and your downstairs. Let’s get down to business (cue Mulan). Get ready to clench your pearls and your cheeks. I don’t mean the ones on your face

Amalia is a witch who helps ppl in the nearby village think Glenda the good witch but with stray cats n sht. The cat brings her a dying lizard who she nurses back to health. Jokes on her though cuz the cute @ss she’s been rubbing ointment on is actually a big@ss dragon’s junk in the trunk who wants her kind eradicated cuz the evil witch of the west aka Stroguil.

The villagers decide that she’s a witch and make her legs do like Anakin when he fights Obi Wan. Dragon daddy does save her takes her back to his crib and magically fixes her Lt. Dan issues. Evil witches go around killing and absorbing magical beings body parts so daddy dragon does not like any witch except he wants to see what her booty do. Real talk she saved his bum so he wants to save hers.

I fookin dare you to see these plot twists. I’m telling u my brain was going wtaf and screaming majority of the time. You can’t see any of the plot coming at you. It’s a toss up which I love more the smut or the plot. But when he diddles her in dragon form… Def an oh my moment.

Dude treats her vagigi like it’s one ring to rule them all. Him being Gollum her bearded taco the precious. If you watched the hobbit and caught feelings for smaug this be the one. Especially if you wish smaug ran a marathon on your luv glove so you can’t walk. Ps. His peen juice is straight magic.
Imagine you’re slobbing the knob and all the sudden you can shoot lasers from your vagigi. Ok she doesn’t do that but it would be cool. Like haha bish puzzy power (flashes love nub). Honestly she’s very sweet and he’s a big grouch but I loves him. All time fav fantasy dragon book periodt.

some random things;;;;

•when they have sex she gains power from his magical dick(literally)😋
•she also raped him to gain power from his magical dick✨
•she was extremely pure/good about magic, miss girl doesn't know what a grey area is🙄
•sex scenes were mostly dubcon with her saying no/enough but then they continuing 😬
•he fucked her in his dragon form😦
•her eating a dragon's heart to live longer 🥴
•the prophecy🤦🏼‍♀️

one and only good thing;;;
hero throwing tantrums 🫶🏻 he was whining, screaming, stomping his paw most of the time and it was hilarious. in the epilogue(60years) he even doesn't like being around his son and finds him irritating 😌😌

Rurik is ill-tempered, hateful, and vain, but he’s also funny, so…

Amalia is a good witch (not to be confused with those evil other witches), who saves animals, fairies, pixies, and even a cricket. When Rurik, a dragon who is known as The Witchslayer, is captured by her cat, she tends to him, thinking he is a weird type of lizard.

The beginning of this book was my favorite part. Rurik’s thoughts as Amalia cared for him as a lizard were hilarious. He hated when a filthy witch touched him, but he was entitled to her comfortable petting that put him to sleep. When he tried (and failed) to breathe fire, I literally laughed. It was so well described that I could picture his actions.

Rurik was quite the character. He throws temper tantrums like a drama queen, thinks of himself as a magnificently beautiful dragon who Amalia should be so lucky to have captured the attention of, and becomes a grumpy little crank when in the presence of others for too long. If it weren’t for his aggression, he’d be the perfect book boyfriend.

Amalia is good-hearted with a fiery tongue. That’s pretty much all you have to know about her. Despite being a little bit of a Mary Sue, she was likable.

The development of their relationship was just as entertaining as it was sweet. Rurik mostly stays in his dragon form, so when Amalia isn’t attracted to him, thinking of him as a creature rather than a sentient being, he takes that personally. He starts spending time with him in his human form just so they can “suffer together” in their mutual attraction.

There was a lot of sex in this book. Now, I love spice, but it was the same scene over. and over. and over. The consent was oftentimes shaky, and even when there was initial consent, there were still uncomfortable moments during or after.

Throughout it’s entirety, Rurik hated witches, holding that notion even at the end. I disliked the “you’re the only good one” aka you’re not like other girls aspect. Between that and Rurik’s feelings about his child, the ending honestly tainted the rest of the story.

This book was long, yet the climax of the story kind of just…suddenly happened. I love spoilers, so I came perusing the reviews for some answers and didn’t get any. If you are like me, here is what happens after Bala (Amalia’s cat) meets her at the cave:

The Witchslayer is a captivating tale. I adored the humor, the banter, and the mischief of the characters. Rurik was confounded by Amalia’s presence, yet hated when he wasn’t in it. I will be thinking about those angry lizard moments for a long time.

My main issue is the writing. There is too much telling and not enough showing in the story. The characters felt very one dimensional, the relationship felt more like Stockholm syndrome rather than any building chemistry, and I just couldn't get into the flow until nearly the end which was highly predictable.

I do like the author but personally this wasn't her best work, at least for me. I feel terrible saying that but she does have a lot of potential and I've enjoyed her pervious works. This story just didn't feel nearly as fleshed out as her previous works. I will be giving her next book in this series a chance in the hopes there is improvement. This world has potential, it just needs some more attention and TLC.

Spice level is 2.5 out of 5.

GOOD LORD. I am sleep deprived from reading this book, but obviously in the best kind of way. This book had me gripped from the very first page. I knew I was going to get great things from Opal so I already had big expectations for this book and boy did she deliver!

This story also gave me massive beauty and the beast vibes which i wasnt expecting! I dont know whether that was deliberate or not I don't know but I loved it! So if you love beauty and the beast or hades and persephone retelling you'll love this!

I loved the chemistry between the characters especially the way that Amalia held her ground against Rurik when he was just being a grumpy bum ( I do love a Grumpy/Sunshine trope!)
Amalia was kind and pure hearted and stayed true to herself throughout the entire story. It was refreshing to read a main character where she's not some tough, I have all my walls up, I have baggage so don't get to close to me kinda gal. She was the perfect balance to Ruriks hot tempered personality.

The spice was sublime and I love how obsessed he was with her 😍 The only thing I will say is I was told in the dedication I would get some 🐲🍆 in this book and I didn't get it till 95% through the book which was very frustrating but I guess I'm just a horny b*tch 😂 but the sex scenes were still top notch and very🌶🌶🌶! So I'm still very happy! I just wanted more 🐲🍆😂

If you love
- Grumpy/ Sunshine
- I hate everyone in the world but you
- Enemies to lovers (mostly one sided)
- Beauty and the beast retellings
- OMG I am actually really powerful
- 🌶🌶🌶 scenes
- Interratial romance 🐲🍆
- Forbidden Love
Then you will ADORE this book!!

4/5 stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I can't wait for more of this story and to see what else the author has in store for us!

I liked the majority of this story! I like the plot, just not always the characters.

I would have forgiven how much of a narcissist the MMC was if he apologized AT ALL for what was said at the point of conflict. But he doesn’t. She apologizes MULTIPLE TIMES and he’s just like thank you. Everything I’ve done is totally warranted and zero apologies needed for screaming about your worst nightmares. /s

Also, there are a lot of consent issues… their first time having sex is abrupt and a surprise, which I didn’t love. There is no real consent from her after he’s decided todays the day he has her. Then, he literally just crams it in, zero prep. From kissing to full thrust to the hilt and then is just still for a second after she’s like wait… like he not only has a predictable romance novel sized massive peen, but he’s just shoving it in. Whyyy. And then there’s the SA.

2.5 rounded up since it was better than OK by a hair. (Also I absolutely want to support this author as I believe she’s talented and takes risk on things that are not everyone’s cup of tea)

I have not finished a real book in nearly two months, talk about a very serious book block for me. The book helped me fix that but…

I need to start with an absolutely useless and stupid tangent. It’s useless and stupid because, i’m pretty sure I’m the only one that cares 😆. So…. dragons are not real and the author can do whatever or say whatever she wants to write regarding her dragons “paws”.🐾🐾 The thing is, and this drove me nuts the entire book, is that I don’t think dragon should have paws they should have hands or feet. Lizards do not have paws, dinosaurs limbs are not considered paws either, they are referred to as hands and feet. It just irked me.. especially in one of the final scenes before the epilogue which is where the .

Now that that absolutely stupid bit of rabbit trail is taken care of let’s get into this book. Was it good? I enjoyed it overall.

Was it as good as A Soul to Keep by the same author? Absolutely not.

This book felt long and the biggest difference was I did not like Rurik like I loved Orpheus. Obviously these are two very different books and hero’s, but the writing is solid in both and I think that’s important to note. Because when I say I felt very little chemistry between the two main characters, I believe that comes from Rurik kinda being an emotionally entitled brat the WHOLE story.

I love a grumpy sunshine trope but Rurik feels entitled to the heroines body, heart, and literal life without any logical background. And Amalia our lady MC never calls this out, she just lets him have his way on everything important including herself.

Would I recommend this? Yes overall, but I would read all the trigger warnings before going in, and Pay attention to that weird sex tag I shelved this as.

This was a pretty solid dragon-shifter romance -3.5 stars-

In the recent days that I've found out about OR's books, I've been obsessed with the way she writes/ structures them. I think she's a really gifted fantasy writer- I definitely preferred 'A soul to keep', to this one, but it was still a good book overall.

I particularly loved the beginning of the book, and the introduction to the characters- it was really nice. I really liked the FMC within this one, and grew to like the MMC too (although it took a while, trust me 💀).

The main thing that didn't work for me within this book was the MMC, and how a lot of his outbursts led to some really frustrating miscommunication. A recurring theme when it comes to the main lead in these types of romances is the need to have a hot-headed MMC, but still make them redeemable.

I felt like in this book, Rurik's personality clashed a lot with different aspects of the story- in a way that I didn't really enjoy. The lack of trust within the book, and the repetition of his outbursts combined slightly got in the way for me/ took away from some scenes.

There was just a lot of miscommunication- especially quite far into the story.

That aside, I genuinely did enjoy the book. I love how it wasn't overly complicated just for the sake of being so, in the name of fantasy 😭- it was pretty straightforward which I liked (although really convenient at times 💀).

I loved the epilogue at the end, and wished that there was a bit more focus on scenes like that. I love OR's writing style, and thought that this was a really nice book with a cool mix of themes.

Some thoughts:

⚠️ Opal Reyne writes long books. This one could have been a 300-350 pages instead of 500 pages.
✅️ the dragon 🐉 smut was pretty good
✅️ is a slow burn 🔥( kinda) so if you are looking for stuff to develop quickly, this is not the book for you
✅️grumpy sunshine trope OFF COURSE.
A dragon SHOULD ALWAYS BE GRUMPY 🫠

Overall a good read 📚 👌 pick this one if you are in for some monster slow burn romance with whole chapters dedicated to smut

I do love me some monster smut and Opal is becoming one of my favourites in this genre.
This is not my first rodeo with dragon prn, so I'm glad that this book brought something new.
I loved the fact that the mcs met each other in rather odd circumstances and it was definitely not insta love. Amalia, she is a witch, a genuinely nice and people orientated person. Her cat brings her an injured odd lizard one day and she sets to put it back on It's feet and release it. The lizard is Rurik, our dragon stuck in his other form. He hates witches, hates basically everything and anything beside his lair 😂 so grouchy and a total jerk, loved him so much.

This is definitely enemies to lovers , both of them take time to care or open up to each other and lots of obstacles are in the way, but they really were a great pair.

So if you love dragons, witches, magic, engaging plot, smut both in human for and monster form😉, this is definitely worth a shot.

This is my second book from this author. I think her ideas/plots are unique, but her writing style is a bit too taking the scenic route pace for my impatient ass to enjoy.

The blurb sets it up, Amalia is a good/white witch. She rescues/nurses a lizard from her cat that turns out to be a dragon shifter, Rurik. He rescues her, but she sees his human face and is forced to stay in his cave.

I read this after finishing A Soul to Keep (ASTK) and the plot was totally different, but the pacing was very similar. The beginning was interesting, then it started to DRRAAAGG when they spent hundreds of pages stuck in his cave, then it picks up at the end with the introduction of the villain.

I like Amalia WAY better than Reia (ASTK) she’s a bit of a pushover, but she was kind, supportive, and selfless. Rurik is no Orpheus; he’s definitely an asshole and NOT boyfriend goals, but I found him more interesting than the lovesick puppy.

The smut is smuttier and all except once (she tells us what’s coming in the author’s note) takes place in his man form. He also can control the size of his dragon to make things more doable.

Bottom Line- The rating is the same (because I skimmed both) but I did enjoy this one more. I recommend to readers that enjoy down time and a grumpy/sunshine dynamic.

Grumpy/ sunshine dragon x witch romance with a looooooot of smut.

I really do like OR's writing (especially love the Duskwalker Brides series) but in this book, I felt like there was a lot more telling & a lot less showing. We are being told that they are having these conversations and spending time together, but not being able to read and experience the building chemistry between the two MCs alongside them. This is especially true for the epilogue. I understand it was a way to put a nice bow on everything, but I didn't enjoy just being told what happened afterwards. I can't help but to compare this book to the DB series, but in those books, we see more of the interactions between MCs. I just didn't feel their chemistry as deeply as I have with OR's other characters.

Regardless, I found myself looking forward to continuing on with the story and I found the general plot to be interesting. Rurik is a pain in the ass but he always had a soft spot for Amalia so it made it hard to really hate him from the jump. I wouldn't call this an enemies to lovers like others have. They are natural enemies, I guess? But they never truly hated each other. Rurik just hated what she was. It's more a one sided hate to love.

I enjoyed this but just not enough to continue the series.

Enemies to lovers where he would burn down the entire world to keep her safe???? Absolutely obsessed. The storytelling is amazing, and the sm*t is 🥵. It’s impossible to not fall in love with Rurik, “He would set fire to the world around him, but never let a flame touch her.” If you love the sunshine girl and grumpy guy trope you will adore this book. The world building is phenomenal I’m absolutely hooked, I cannot wait for next book in the series. I’m trying to keep this review spoiler free but the plot twists in this book?? I’m the type of person who subconsciously guesses what’s going to happen next in most books and I did not see that coming at all. Amalia is incredible and I love how she’s always honest & doesn’t hesitate when it comes to standing up for herself or those she cares about even if she’s the nicest person on earth.

I’m happy I got to ARC read this book but now I can’t wait until the next one 😭😭 Opal Reyne has single-handedly become one of my favorite authors.

This was not good.

FMC was a mary sue in every possible way, and the MMC was a brooding, stupid piece of meat. The dialogue was cheesy, and the development of character relationships wildly unrealistic. To top it all off, there's horrible consent communication between the two love interests, and it's normalized in a really gross way. I think the author was going for a Snow White, innocent princess who just loves animals oh-so-much and wouldn't hurt a fly vibe, but it came across as very contrived and immature. No redeeming qualities about this book in my eyes.

Started off great, but it was a steady downhill for me. This was a grumpy-sunshine romance and it is one of my all time favorite tropes but the H was a bit too grumpy for me, but I really liked the h. All in all it started out really strong but just fell flat, but it was still an okay read.🫶

Fair warning, there's no dragon donging in this book until literally the last chapter. All the smut leading up to this is strictly human on human (or in human form anyway). Don't @ me about spoiler warnings. That's need to know info.

I reeeeeeaaallly wanted to like this book as I'd heard great things about Opal Reyne's Duskwalker series. In hindsight I think I made a mistake in reading The Witchslayer first because now I don't know if I have the inner mojo to pick up the authors other works.

Dragons and smut. What could go wrong?

Apparently plenty.

The book was far too long. I LOVE long books when they're riveting but the Witchslayer draaaaaggged.

At the beginning the storytelling-esque writing style was cute. I thought "Okay, cool so we're getting a lot of explanation, detail and inner monologue, because the plot is being established but that'll change later on"

It wasn't until around a half a dozen chapters and 60ish pages in that it became apparent that, nope, this was just how it has been written.

This book progressively became more and more of an effort to read until around chapter 30 when I really had to push myself to finish it. The whole book is 42 chapters btw (43 if you count the epilogue).

There was something about the writing style that felt very underdeveloped, which in turn made the reading experience feel a bit long.

There was too much detail and not in a good way (like outlining the specifics of every mundane action and event). There were also a lot of surplus details (even side characters) included when they did not appear to service or add to the plot at all.

Rehashing of events took place in both Rurik (the dragon) and Amalia's (the witch) POV's which meant we often had to read two versions of the same event.

The way the characters talked was inconsistent. At times holding conversation in ye-old English before veering into new age slang and back again.

But the thing that nearly made me throw my cookies out the cot...

The exclamation marks! (< YES, THESE PESKY STICK AND BALL THINGS)

Exclamations! Here, there, everywhere. As far as the eye could see...

No joke, in every second to forth inner thought or conversation that anyone had there was an exclamation mark, like everyone was just constantly yelling or exclaiming things the entire book.

The overuse of exclamations was so extreme, that anyone knocking back a shot of tequila for every one probably would've ended up black out drunk within a couple of chapters.

I get it, the characters are under duress and feel passionately but there were definitely better ways the author could've illustrated these feelings / got this across without having to season it with exclamation marks like damn salt-bae seasons his steaks.

Even though it seems like I'm tearing it apart, I didn't hate this book. The premise was interesting. The plot held my attention. The magic system wasn't complex but effort obviously went into creating it, the smut was good (even though I wouldn't say it was titillating and the dragon peen didn't make an appearance until the very last chapter), and the Rurik and Amalia, although not fully fleshed out and lacking some chemistry, were fine together.

Some extensive revision and editing wouldn't go astray though... Just saying.

I loved this book. I loved the MC’s. I loved that Rurik was a grumpy dragon and that Amalia was a sunshiny witch. There was a decent bit of angst too. It was HOT! I just adored this book and the world building. This author loves the word “crinkled” so much she used it 35 times. I’ll definitely re-read!

Where do I even begin to explain how much I enjoyed this book?!
Amalia is a young white Witch, alone in the world with a immense love for all life; enjoying it, caring for it, and preserving it. Known to heal all that come to her cottage, but unknown to the locals that she is a Witch, she heals the sick and injured and stealthily tries to keep the people around her safe and healthy without revealing her Witch status. She also chats incessantly to every animal around her, making her even more likable and enjoyable to read.
A small angry "lizard" falls into her life, flips it upside down, and so begins the wonderful, sexy, maddeningly addictive story of Amalia and Rurik. Watching their story, and Amalia's, unfurl was one of the most enjoyable stories I have ever been able to dive into. It also has to be mentioned that the action in the story is written SO WELL. It feels like you're in the battles with the characters, feeling that life threatening, breath taking intensity right alongside them.

"He would set fire to the world around him, but never let a flame touch her."

Not to mention- the SPICE?! UNREAL. We get it rough, we get love making, we get DRAGON KNOTS, we get such intensity that it literally brought tears to my eyes and killed my BOB's battery. This has quickly climbed into one of my all time favorites, and best reads so far this year. The story line is so well written, there's love, action, magic, and dragons. The characters are all so incredibly lovable, and the arcs we see happen are incredibly well done.

If you're looking for grumpy-sunshine, a fully lovable heroine, some absolutely ON FIRE spice, epic character knots, amazing world building, and more- do yourself a favor and pick this story up. You will not regret it.

3.5 stars because I'm not a fan of epilogue babies ): Also the MMC has a weird way of showing love towards his child but that's fine. I just wish there hadn't been a baby ugh. I have one IRL and my romance books are my escapism lol.

The hero reminded me very much of Silhara from Master of Crows. These books are not at all alike, but their dynamic with each other reminds me of Silhara and Martise. It's nearly 2 am here or I would expound more on that. Master of crows is one of my all time favorites!!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that there was a spicy scene when the hero was in his dragon form. It was my first book with knotting,

This author is really great at creating a story and a world. Great book, highly recommend especially if you liked Duskwalker!

This book is horrible, it’s not good at all and the storyline doesn’t make any sense. The main character “Rurik” in this book is kind of a male chauvinist pig. This book was supposed to be romantic or something but the romance scenes in this book are cringy and unnatural.

Who knew I was into Grumpy Purple Dragons!?
I was so excited when I read what this book was about and scrambled so fast to sign up for the ARC that I messed it up and had to re do it.

It was so worth it!

Amalia is a white witch and dedicates her life to helping and healing people while trying to hide the fact she is a witch. A strange, small injured lizard is brought to her to save which in turn ends up saving her life.
Rurik is a purple dragon with a temper and a Blood debt who finds the strange witch wandering his lair irresistible, but it all goes against his everything he's ever known.

We get spice, lots of spice 🌶️ as well as tender romance and great plot to go with it 😁 The relationship between the 2 MCs is beautiful and I love them both so much.

I must admit I wish we didn't have to wait until 95% to get the dragon d1ck but It's worth the wait 😉

I have learned that I like grouchy guys who soften up when the FMC is in distress. I loved these two. Amalia went through so much. It broke my heart that she only felt safe with someone who was an asshole to her (well in the beginning). And she didn't let ANYTHING change who she was deep down inside. Rurik is a douche but when Amalia really needed him, he was there doing what he could to making her feel better. This story has everything: magic, shifters, danger, mystery, love, spiciness and humor. I give this a 4.6 so I am rounding it up

"You satisfy the rage in me." Homeboy was satisfying my pussy this whole book lawd 😩 I honestly didn't want to finish this quick bec I didn't wanna stop reading it. At first, I thought it was gonna be too long for it to keep my interest, but I was happily surprised that it kept me entertained. In the beginning, I didn't think it was going to give me that romance vibe bec of the way he talked about her, but it was one of those books where his actions show his feelings before he can even realizes he has them. Finally, a cute "innocent" (not a virgin thank god but pure) fmc that I don't hate. I didn't cringe or take a tik tok break. I will say that when the major conflict happens, I was terrified that what she was doing, she was doing bec she had been condemned and almost dnfed. I do wish the author could have come up with an alternate way for her to save him, but it wasn't disturbing like I thought it was going to be. I can say I understand ppl who dnf or rate it low bec of it. Did I cry? Next question 😭 this had me feeling everything. The smut was panty dropping. Loved how the author included some details (i just went through a bad streak of books with less than a page of details), tho I do wish we got more scenes of them 😏 while he's in dragon form. I read a review that was complaining about the use of the word "paws", and they used puppy paw emojis, and I'm a bit confused why they were thinking of short stub toed paws when the author describes him having long claws? If she would have used the words "hand" or "feet" it would have been weird bec he's not human. Anyway, overall love this author and ate this up. (If you read my updates where I claimed to dnf ignore that babes 😘 I was in a silly goofy mood)

This book surprised me.

So far, both of the Opal Reyne books I’ve read have an amazing introduction page so when you jump into it you think it’s going to be xxx filled. But, it’s so much more than those delicious smutty scenes that you will get. The story she weaves, the character development, the lore and world building are so captivating. I didn’t know I’d love this book as much as I loved A Soul to Keep but I did and I will be impatiently waiting the next book.

Started off well, but the MMC’s personality annoyed me a lot throughout this book. I also personally didn’t feel like the SA scene between the main characters was 100% necessary for the plot even with how it was managed. I wish there had been another way to save him/her that didn’t involve crossing that moral line.

4.5 stars ✨

Gobbled this up in a day.

• one sided enemies-to-lovers (he sees her as an enemy, while she has no clue)
• kindhearted “I don’t harm, I heal” fmc, but definitely brave
• broody x sunshine
• slowburn romance
• he would burn down the world for her
• forced proximity
• betrayal trope (medium angsty, but HEA)
