Amalie Skram (22 August 1846 – 15 March 1905) was a Norwegian author and feminist who gave voice to a woman's point of view with her naturalist writing. She moved to Denmark in 1894 where she settled in Copenhagen with her husband, the Danish writer Erik Skram. She is considered the most important female writer of the Modern Breakthrough.
Too sad. I'm reading a Christmas anthology and this story is in it. I'm seeing a trend in earlier christmas stories, they were sad, too sad for me. Unlike a Christmas carol, the majority so far don't have a happy ending or a message of hope, they are a vehicle to point out social and class differences and abuse of power. This story was just too sad for me.
Hurra for Skram!
i read this in school when I was 15 or thereabouts so I knew what the story was about, but it is so heart-wrenching that it moved me to tears even so. Beautifully written, but so sad...
