I didn't know what to expect and I wasn't aware it's an ongoing webcomic but I was captivated by the beautiful artwork. It follows the inhabitants of Twistwood and how they navigate life while demonstrating beautiful life lessons in a way kids too would understand. One of my favorites was: "The thing is life always plays it's part when you aim for something. That's just how life is! So we plan accordingly". The creatures were absolutely lovely, my favorites being the adorable Bucket Boy and the too relatable Loghead. I can't wait to read more of their little adventures!
Twistwood Tales is a perfect shelf addition for anyone who loves dark humor, Over the Garden Wall, and seasonal depression jokes. It's a delightful blend of single-page comics and ongoing stories, perfect for when you have a few minutes to spare (or an hour to binge).
Before reading Twistwood, I have to say: I never thought I would feel such friendships with a log, potato, or bucket with goggles on, but AC Macdonald has done the impossible, and made me care about a potato that isn't fried, baked, or formed into pancakes.
I'll be picking this up for my husband and recommending it to several friends. What a fun book! Many thanks to NetGalley, AC Macdonald, and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was adorable! I really enjoyed the drawings, the style reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes sometimes. The thing I appreciated the most is the subtle melancholy that can be perceived in scenes about delicate themes (social anxiety, depression, mental health, the feeling of not being enough), but also the occasional subtle dark humor (the doctor is amazing lol). I think it portrays the struggle of modern society using a fantastic setting with slightly weird fairy-tale characters that somehow we happen to find relatable. A very pleasant reading for me!
Got it from Netgalley This was amazing. The art style is cute and a little retro, the characters are very lovable, and the humor is weird and a little dark (so just up my alley). I also love the little "game" that has been added. I can't do it well on my phone as I would have to go back and forth and back and forth, but if I had a physical copy I'd have lots of fun looking for the hidden items!
This is so beautiful. The ability to make readers feel so much within just (usually only) 4 panels is remarkable. The characters all have such beautiful qualities and the segments have the ability to be both funny and sad, thoughtful and fun at the same time.
What a fun ride with this cute illustrated book. I had no expectations whatsoever going into this since it was obvious that it was a kids' book, but oh boy did I laugh, gasp and had a fun time. Beyond that, I think it is a must-read for your kids who are into reading.
This one has beautiful art pieces leaning towards vintage-ish colours and above all great life lessons in a double-meaning kinda way. It might be a little hard for a little kid to understand some puns and the deeper meaning of some words, but the meaningful experiences and lessons that it delivers are absolutely valuable in early childhood. It's like "a good friend who gives you great advise in book form."
However, I am not the target audience for this book hence the 4 starts. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this one.
I picked this up as a quick read last night, and I honestly ended up loving this so much! I didn't quite know what to expect going in, because I hadn't heard of the existing webcomic before receiving this advanced copy from Netgalley, but the art drew my eye and I wanted to give it a shot! I'm really glad I did, and I'll definitely be looking into the webcomic or keeping an eye out for future volumes!
This book felt like a perfect balance of adorable woodland creatures and heartwarming stories, with a bunch of humor and a light touch of spookyness thrown in. It took me a second to get into it, since at first there are a lot of individual little stories (about 1 page each), which meant we jumped around between a lot of new characters at first. However, once we started seeing the same characters again and again, and how their stories started to overlap, I was so engrossed in it. I loved so many of these little guys (Bucket Boy! The Robber Duckies!!!), and seeing them come back time and time again in these little tales was adorable. I also really liked that this volume ended on a longer story that really brought together some loose stories, and it was just a perfect note to end it on. I also just loved the art style so much, and I really can't wait to read more of these tales (if there are more!)
This book was a complete delight. The cover drew me in, because the art style is reminiscent of Over the Garden Wall. And wouldn’t you know, the book delivers while managing to remain distinctly unique.
The story is told in small vignettes featuring the wide cast of characters. At first they seem disconnected and sparse, but the longer you read, the more connected the world becomes. And at some point I found myself feeling the full spectrum of emotions. It just sneaks up on you. The characters are cute, quirky, and have important lessons to teach. Some of it can be a bit adult, but it still manages to remain child-appropriate.
When I started the book I thought it would be an ultimately inconsequential, if cute, read. However I’m left with a story that is going to stick with me, and I’ll definitely be picking up a copy when it releases.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
A fun webcomic with a wide range of characters. I love when comics are set up to be a quick, four section joke, but we still see returning storylines within them. Highly reccomend if you like re-imagined fairytales or "Over the Garden Wall" vibes
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a review!
Very Over-the-Garden-Wall-esque, but with more “feel good” messages. Honestly, just put quirky characters and folktales in the woods and I’m gonna love it.
This book is just utterly delightful. I did not really know what I was getting myself into when I chose it, as I was expecting a classic linear graphic novel, however, this is so much more. Twistwood Tales is a collection of 93 different short tales that feature a wide variety of the residents of Twistwood, a fantastical forest filled with interesting creatures. Some of the stories are connected with reoccurring characters and continuing plotlines, and some of them are not, but each and every one of them is wonderful. I was mostly surprised by the mix of tones in the tales, there was humor, warmth, introspection, and occasionally a tinge of creepiness. When combined with beautiful artwork and creative characters, it creates an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend this book and I can definitely see myself rereading it multiple times. Also, the addition of the search and find at the end of the book was a nice little extra level of detail and fun that was appreciated.
I can’t get enough of these comics. The art is so cute and fun. The characters are all so charming. There’s lots of goofy jokes, but then he turns around and throws something really sweet at you.(or something a bit painful, in a good kind of way.) I absolutely love these comics and recommend them to anyone who enjoys fun little comic tales.
I'm not sure I can express how much I delight in reading the Twistwood Tales! These comics are funny, insightful, adorable, and exactly what I needed! I caught myself saying "oh my God, this is so freaking cute" out loud too many times to count! The characters range from incredibly sweet (Bucket Boy) to hilariously inept (the Doctor) in the very best way possible. Please do yourself a favor and read this book, then send it to everyone you know! I know I will be!
Twistwood Tales is one of the most delightful, charming, cozy, and funny comics I've ever read. It's a blend of humor, fantasy, fairy tales, and critter adventure that anyone of any age will love. Most of the comics are single-page jokes, but there are also some that are several pages long and even some that continue on throughout the book. Characters recur and mingle. I haven't enjoyed a comic this much in a long time.
Adorable!! In the style of the funny pages, this anthology delivers corny humor, cute characters, and some truths about life. Twistwood Tales is truly a hidden gem!

Content/Trigger Warnings: Depiction & themes of mental illness, brief scenes of loss of a loved one, scenes of bullying (always challenged)
"The world may seem a scary place, with darkness all around, but darkness cannot stop the light of kindness, I have found."
Friends, this was such a delightfully fun time! When I tell you I loved each and every character in this graphic novel, I mean it with my whole chest. Not to mention, if you're a lover of Over the Garden Wall, you're going to enjoy this art style so much. When I first saw the cover, it instantly made me think of Over the Garden Wall and I knew I had to read this.
Just like the Over the Garden Wall series, this book has many characters you'll come to enjoy, fall in love with, feel their struggles and hardships, but also tackle topics of mental health in a unique way. Even some of the bullies become likeable as they change and find healthy, creative outlets. It was such an interesting take on some familiar fairytales and just some interesting characters in general. I think some of my favorites have to be Little Red and Mister Wolf, and of course I have to mention the wholesome Bucket Boy. There's too many lovely characters, but I loved them all dearly and their journeys, their stories.
Overall, I truly loved this graphic novel with everything in my whole chest. I don't want to say too much, but know that there's humor, some sad times, and there's many good moments that will warm your heart. I think this is probably one of my favorite graphic novels I've read so far for 2023. Again, the art style makes me think of Over the Garden Wall and if you enjoyed that, I think you'll have a wonderful time reading this graphic novel. To all of those out there who like reading graphic novels that surround mental health, I definitely recommend giving this graphic novel a chance!

All thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions are honest and my own.
A sweet, autumnal comic strip with reocurring characters set in some enchanted ol' woods. Most of the tiny tales are contained within the 4-panel strips with a few stretching across more pages ending with one longer story. Overall the wholesome punny tone worked well with the spookier elements, deffo would recommend to younger readers or any adults wanting a cute read.
This was weird, adorable, a little creepy, and a lot wholesome. This is a series of comics with interconnected characters and a few connected plots. I adored this and will absolutely be revisiting. It's so comfy!
I came into Twistwood Tales, completely blind. I didn't know what to expect. All I knew was the that art was adorable and a friend had recommended it. I fell in love rather quick with this and after finishing it, I quickly subscribed to the webcomic and am excited to dive into it to read more.
At first, I was a little confused and it took me a moment to settle into the story as it starts off with a bunch of single-page, four-paneled comics with different characters. As I continued, the characters started to appear again and their stories started to overlap into these wonderful, heartwarming tales. There was humor that was up my ally with the play on words.
The characters and the art were so cute! While I do think my favorites were Bucket Boy and The Robber Duckies (there name being part of the humor that really had me laugh), they were all adorable. Each one was so well drawn and I loved seeing theme pop up. The color palette was stunning and really gave the fall vibes and characters living in the forest. The art style and color palette really helped bring them all to life.
The final tale of this volume was a longer one that seemed to really help tie everything in. It was a wonderful wrapping up point for this volume, but also made me, as previously mentioned, eager to dive back into these tales and find out more about what was going on with all of these characters.
Thank you Andrew McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.
I was already expecting to like this but it was still even better than I thought it'd be.
I find it difficult to understand why some people are snobbish and look down on comics or graphic novels when they can be so enjoyable like this, most of the time they probably haven't even given any a try.
The book is so efficient and economical, an incredibly tight and rapid way to tell stories, yet so much emotion is conveyed within such narrow restrictions. Oftentimes the stories are 4 small panels long and yet end up more thought provoking or emotionally compelling than I've seen other works achieve in a much larger span.
Reads well for both children or adults, I enjoy that some of the stories have a moral message or something that could be pondered. A very satisfying read for autumn, it could be easily finished in one sitting but I think it works better if you read it over multiple days during the season.
It would be perfect for fall / Halloween time, or any other time when you're looking for some cute and lightly spooky vibes. I always love finding feel-good stories I can read to capture the feeling of spooky season. 🎃
The tales seem like disconnected vignettes at first, but they connect the more you read. All the characters were super lovable and I thought the art fit the tone well (it felt very folkloric). I especially loved the twisted jokes of the plague doctor.
I followed the creator on Webtoon, and plan to keep up with this series.
Each page is filled with a hysterical, and insightful tale about the inhabitants of Twistwood. A town so weird, it's almost normal. I was expecting a full length story when I started reading Twistwood Tales, but to my pleasant surprise it was a collection of short stories that interlocked with each other gradually. The characters we adorable, I personally loved the plague doctor. Filled with dry, borderline morbid, the humor will appeal to a niche group of people. However, those are the type of people you want to be hanging out with. For all the quirks, they have big hearts, just like the characters in Twistwood. I will be purchasing a copy of this for the library. A lot of my kids have this type of humor.
I received this and as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for giving me access.
If you love puns or taking the literal sense of any phrase, Twistwood Tales is for you.
Starting our we have a collection of comics that refer to their literal sense of meaning vs the good ol' adage we are used to. As you dive deeper into Twistwood, the story becomes more continuous with a sprinkling of a side story. This was fun, cute, and has some good teaching moments.
I wouldn't consider this is a children's comic, but it is great for adults that would understand the humor.
Cute little collection of cartoons, containing some fun jokes, twisted tales, and a good amount of life morals, without making it too in your face.
The art is the perfect mix of light and dark, and the whole final product is just adorable and mighty entertaining, with an ample repertoire of characters that guarantees that you'll find someone to love here.
Also, this beautiful edition comes with a folding map to Twistwood Tales (that actually can be colored), and a little puzzle game at the end, where they ask you to find different objects in every cartoon. Double the fun!
bucket boy, rock girl & tater sam. im in love. AAAAAA. 💕💞💓💗💖💘💝.
i just got this arc, and i literally devoured this within the hour.
this graphic novel is full of adorable characters, punny jokes & short stories. i didn't really know what to expect going into it, but the art style SOLD me. i definitely recommend this graphic novel once it comes out to anyone looking for a short, funny, and beautiful read!
This was very cute - I had no idea what I was getting into as I kinda picked this up on a whim thinking it would be a fun autumnal story - turns out its more like an anthology of little autumnal/wintery stories -if I had to pick a month for this though it would be a November book - Its hard to really talk about this because its just short stories (like sometimes even just 4 panes)- but its just autumnal and cozy feelings with some great life lessons along the way.
