Can falling in love melt the hearts of the iciest ice queens?
Cassidy Bennett spends an unexpected evening at a lesbian nightclub with her notoriously reserved and demanding boss, successful venture capitalist Julia Whitmore. After seeing a different side of Julia, Cassidy can’t seem to shake her desire to know more.
Ugh!!! That was waaaay too short for my liking! My fault because I didn’t read the fine print ugh. But Private Equity was such a fun read! I want more!
This novella was first published in December 2019 as part of Bold Strokes Books’ collection of three novellas, “Hot Ice.”
Cassidy Bennet is the Chief of Staff for Julia Whitmore, a venture capitalist and an ice queen. Cassidy loves her job and has a major crush on her boss. She is surprised beyond anything her imagination could have conjured up when Julia asks her to join her at Cassidy's best friend’s birthday party. She drinks too much to try to calm her nerves, and the party becomes one of the things she hopes her boss completely wipes from her brain.
This is a fun, quick read. The story is told from Cassidy’s perspective so the reader is inside Cassidy’s head. She is funny and her fantasies about her boss are graphic. The reader will find herself smiling a lot at Cassidy’s conversations with herself and might laugh out loud as her fantasies seem to be coming true. Spencer’s writing is, as usual, excellent, her pacing is impeccable, and Cassidy is well drawn and very likable while Julia may be an ice queen on the surface, there’s a softer side to her.
Fans of stories about ice queens will love this novella, and Elle Spencer’s fans probably read this story when it first came out but they might want to return to it and read again.
"Private Equity" is yet another truly FABULOUS read by Elle Spencer; she continues to astonish as to quite how much detail she's able to squeeze into a novella...This one features a quirky, laugh-out-loud hilarious and self-deprecating protagonist. Cassidy Bennett is VERY much into her icy boss Julia Whitmore (even before their evening together at a lesbian nightclub with a few friends) and I couldn't help but melt at the adorable proud "parent" moments/interactions she shares with Julia's daughter, Lily. Cassidy is flawed/real, struggles with (tear-inducing) abandonment issues AND her sarcastic retorts when forced to interact with Julia's ex-husband is simply brilliant.
This is Spencer writing at her best. Funny, endearing, relatable, and you're in it immediately. The attraction, the chemistry, the "unrequitedness" made this a propulsive read. She had me grinning with her and my heart breaking with the characters. Wow. Not too much melodrama impulses are indulged like in The Road to Madison. Honestly loved this so much. The comebacks from Cassidy were hilarious.
Had to put this book down so many times because I can't stop smiling & giggling. SO GOOD! I'm a sucker for a cold, corporate, ice queen!!! This one checks all the boxes!!!
My Kindle notes all just say "AHDHJDJDKDUEUDHEUDHKDKSKS". So yeah, that's an indication of a good book.
Would give up everything to read this again for the first time 😭
A fun little story in which sexually objectifying the lead takes centre stage. As much as I love a good fantasy, there were a few moments even I was a l'il creeped out by Cassidy's "inner thoughts." Alas, I still enjoyed it and wish the characters could have had more time to be fleshed out. The scenes with Cass's parents were overdone and went on too long IMO, lost some points.
