Unexpected

Rate this book
Richard has everything he ever wanted—immense wealth, sky-high status, beautiful men… But only the dog he did not want brings him some semblance of happiness. After a messy breakup, he moves to a tiny coastal town, intent on rebuilding his life and reinventing himself. He shouldn’t even be noticing cute omegas half his age. Except then he finds his shy little dog walker crying on his living room floor, and protecting Carter becomes his utmost priority.
Carter has always had a thing for older men, but they never seem to have a thing for him. His crush on the smoldering Richard Porter is inappropriate and downright silly, and every meeting with the alpha leaves him a blushing mess. Hopefully, he can spend quality time with Mr. Porter’s lovable golden retriever and avoid the man himself.
When Carter’s friend bails on him before his second heat, Carter faces an impossible decision—to pay a heat professional he can’t afford, find a random stranger on a dating app, or risk his heart in the arms of the unattainable Mr. Porter.

Unexpected is an omegaverse romance with age gap, hurt/comfort, and slow simmering heat that suddenly explodes. HEA, standalone. Non-shifter, mpreg.

“It’s me who’s grateful, Carter,” Richard whispered. His fingers skimmed my neck and along my collarbone. “Thank you for letting me touch you. For trusting me.” Another kiss, a flick of his tongue against mine. “For this incredible moment. Thank you. Thank you so much.”

roe horvat is the only author i trust to write erotica with emotional connection, value, and sentiment. hell, he’s the only author i read erotica from and look forward to it. add to that that he’s the only author i’ve read omegaverse from. filthy and dirty, and then sweet and soft. the way i started this immediately after it released and forced myself to inhale every page until my eyes couldn’t stay open anymore to the point where tears fell down because of how tired i was says enough.

i don’t think i’ll ever get tired of this author's writing. despite the fact that i haven’t been a fan of every book i’ve read by him, i can count on him to deliver short and sweet stories that serve its purpose of entertainment and suspension of disbelief, as well as pure delight and awe. i have yet to come across another author who writes like him. this, of course, includes sex. i’m not even one to pay much attention to them but with his stories i’m glued to every page, even shamelessly going back and re-reading some scenes.

i enjoyed this much more than book 1. i felt the connection, loved both characters, and appreciated much more about it. some of y’all already know i’m a slut for age gaps—you have the rich, almost retired, silver fox in his 40s who’s experienced in many different areas, wondering what to do with his life, hoping he’ll settle down soon. then you have the shy, college student in his early 20s looking for a job to make funds enough to continue furthering the future he wishes to have. you add the two together and you have a opposites attract, age gap, hurt/comfort story with an alpha hoping to take care of his future boy and a small omega approaching his heat. these two had such a sweet and cute relationship. the way richard took such good care of carter when he was in heat? how he’d pound himself inside and then caress him, nip, and spoon him? how he would always ask carter if he’s okay, comfortable, and feels good? how he’d move heaven and hell to make sure he was safe and protected? the possessiveness he started feeling? all the mine mine mine? i was in awe. it was a delight to read about these two. i could read an extra 100 and even 200 pages of these two just being together. imagine seeing them being lovey lovey with noodle, their dog, and their future child? i’d be giggling to that shit.

i can talk about multiple scenes this book had that showed the softness of these two, especially of richard towards carter. i loved seeing how he became someone so focused on work to someone appreciating the beauty and value of an unexpected an important person in his life. i also loved reading about the future carter had for himself and how hopeful he was of becoming an english teacher. even if we don’t see the scenes, i can only imagine how wonderful he’d be. despite how sexual this book is, it has so many soft and sweet scenes throughout the novel. it’s a reason why i love reading roe’s books because even though erotica is essentially a genre focusing more on sex, there is romance in between his pages and characters. in all his books i’ve read, both characters always worship each other in their own way, appreciating the connection the two begin growing that shows the increase of their emotions and feelings.

all in all, this was loving. i also loved seeing the cameos of burke and emerson from book 1 and hope kirby gets his book soon.

“You’ve changed my life. In the short time I’ve known you, you’ve managed to change me.” Talking and breathing were suddenly difficult to synchronize properly. I swallowed. “I’m jaded, entitled, and arrogant, and I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life, chasing after meaningless trophies, taking my luck for granted, until all my victories tasted like dirt. Then you appeared on my patio and almost magically peeled away years of bitterness and rust from my heart. I only need to look at your sweet face, and suddenly, my existence makes sense again.”

Roe Horvat writes the best erotica bar none.

Expect plenty of:

~ initial UST ("mousey" dog walker + wealthy tycoon)

~ age gap (Richard is twice Carter's age)

~ heat sex (NSFW!)

~ emotional vulnerability (both men must let down their guard and trust each other)

~ a dash of conflict (in the guise of Leonard, Richard's ex-boyfriend, who can't move on and tries to sabotage Richard's relationship with Carter)

~ adorable dog (all the cheers for Noodle!)

~ and a perfect HEA

All that, plus a couple scenes featuring Burke and Emerson from book 1 who are living their best life.

I wonder if Leonard is getting a redemption story?

I'm here for anything this author writes.

I could have SWORN that I could read Roe Horvat's cracktastic knotting, alpha/omega books all day long and be in absolute bliss but... but... maybeitsbecomingtoomuchsexforme?? Am I BROKEN???

Of course, a big part of me loved Unexpected. I don't know why but when Roe describes those knotting scenes... WHEW (*bites knuckles*). Those deep d*cking scenes are just beyond, beyond, and it's hard to find any flaws.

However...

I can't help but feel like his books are just blurring together for me. They are getting so repetitive, and I'm having a hard time telling them apart. I wish there was something else to the plotlines other than rich guy/less rich guy, uncontrollable heat urges, LOTS of breeding (okay... that part can stay...), and blah, blah, blah. I miss the more layered MCs of Roe's past. I want a longer story that isn't so sex-focused (and YES, I hear what I'm saying and I'm ashamed!).

So I might actually be done with Roe for awhile?? I think I need a break so the stories feel fresh and new again. Or maybe, just maybe, we can take a break from the knotting and get some new stories in there. Please?

Roe does it again.

This Winter Sun interconnected omegaverse, centred around Dalton City and its environs, really is an absolutely delightful mix of smoking hot sex and the most wonderful romance, filled with a nurturing overly possessive alpha and a sweet little cinnamon bun omega.

I loved everything about this one, possibly slightly more than the first book in the series,Ugly which I utterly adored.

We met Richard in Ugly, he's Burke's best friend who went on to make a fortune and who, when we last saw him, seemed to have been stuck in a miserable relationship with a snotty and bitchy omega.

When Unexpected opens, we find out the true state of their relationship and it's not pretty. I felt for both of them, Leo isn't necessarily a bad person, he's just really not right for Richard and they've been making each other miserable in a spiral of kinks which just damage their relationship rather than enhance it.

After Richard ends things, he heads to a small coastal town where his path crosses with the sweetly shy dog walker Carter, who is just a wonderfully uncomplicated young man almost two decades younger.

Carter's slowly finding his way in life, going to college to become a teacher, he loves animals and has a part time job working as a dog walker, which sees him taking up looking after Richard's pup Noodle.

And can I just put in a big 💗 here for Noodle, who is the goodest boy ever, he's a Retriever full of boundless love and energy who very much acts as a balm to the soul for Richard.

When Carter's second heat arrangements fall through, he finds himself sobbing on Richard's living room floor and suddenly facing going through it alone.

There's both an element of slow burn with this and a side order of instalove, which I know sounds utterly impossible, but we get a build up to Richard's falling for Carter while for the omega, it's an instant attraction to the powerful older alpha.

The sex, as you'd expect from Roe, is incandescently hot, there's heat knotting, multiple orgasms, a bit of dirty talk and explosive breeding talk. But there's also gentle caring, tenderness, a growing need for the other that has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with recognising your soul mate.

It's another glorious addition to the series and Kirby's book is up next and I am desperate to find out who's going to try taming that little fireball of attitude!

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review

Roe’s omegaverse books are like my crack. They’re light-your-knickers-on-fire hot and also always add an element of pure sweetness. The bond between Carter and Richard is so sweet and I am always a sucker for a a dog side character. I also appreciate that even the villains are shown to have vulnerabilities, even though I still wanted to throttle Richard’s ex, lol.

I love the fact that Roe weaves together sex and love so well. I am a sucker for high steam but I need it with feels, too. He ALWAYS delivers and I am so thankful for it.

Wasn’t that sweet?! Yes yes yessssss!

That there was Noodle, the golden retriever puppy, and Carter being his dog walker gave the story a homey feeling from the start.

When Richard & Carter’s story began there was still an issue with Richard’s ex Leonard, who’s been a dick. So much so you could feel the urge to punch him yourself. And he almost fucked it up between Richard and Carter. But I must say, his presence gave this story a certain thrill.

Richard was not prepared to fall hard for Carter after first meeting him while Carte was already crushing hard on the older man. It was really cute to watch their relationship building up to love and forever.

He’s perfect. He’s absolutely perfect for me.
My boy. My omega.

No, it wasn’t just the heat. It was all Carter. The boy had become the center of my universe, and his happiness, the contented smile on his sleeping face, my ultimate purpose.

With Burke & Emerson (from book #1) occasionally in the picture and Richard’s own desires there was more focus on mpreg in this one. So you know.

But anyway, I loved loved loved to see Burke & Emerson again. So far they are my favorite couple in the series.

At how things ended between Richard and Leonard and their last talk I was wondering if there’s another story to tell and RH will gift him his own book in the series. But first things first… I’m really looking forward to Kirbey’s story next. ♡

[4.5] Roe Horvat proves time and time again that he knows how to deliver on the chest-squeezy, heart-pattery, stomach-swoopy feels even when it’s the last thing you’d expect from an omegaverse story that’s >75% fever-inducing smut. trust me when i say this straightforward age gap romance between a workaholic at the end of his tether and his new dog walker (with only a few—thank goodness!—appearances from the “evil” ex) couldn’t have come at a better time.

but funny how while part of me wished we’d gotten a little more storywise, the manner in which the author brought the most precious doggie friend in existence to life and allowed the little guy to strut around while being his best canine self guaranteed a rating round-up from me, no questions asked. i’m just that simple of a human 😜

Noodle was as much of a main character as the couple, and i will not be accepting any comments to the contrary. the most iconic dog depiction in m/m to date, this is the standard to aim for when talking furry friends in books 🥺💖

His cock was perfection. The round shape of his cockhead massaging my inner wall, the length, more than enough to reach all the way into my core, the thickness stretching my rim.... Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I could chant my gratitude on every thrust and mean it.

i loved it. im just a roe horvat trash at this point and im not even complaining. reading this was a blast because for some fucking reason my inner self immediately fancasted henry cavill as the rich and all male mr. richard porter. my mind, ugh, it amazes me sometimes. i hate how it is disinterested in almost everything but when it comes to smutty books the fucker is always on high alert. hot sex + love for dogs + house by the beach + summer setting made this book a winner. the erotica was divine, other authors could never. 5 stars for my pure obsession and enjoyment. looking forward to the third book!

I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again - NO ONE can write MM+ erotica like @roehorvat. Some call it smut. And this book has A LOT (and I mean A. LOT. with a capital L!) of explicit alpha/omega/heat/pregnancy s3x in it. But it’s not smut. While it’s explicit, it’s never just s3x - they are slowly but surely falling deeply & joyfully in love. And THAT’s what I love about Roe’s books - he balances super-hot erotica with a love story and the happiest of happy endings. I’m not a huge fan of MM fantasy O/A romance, but if Roe writes it, I love it.

Older, wealthy, alpha Richard employs the young, sensitive omega Carter to be his dog walker. When Carter approaches a heat without anyone to help him through it, already being attracted to Richard, Carter asks him. With plenty of passion, they eventually get their HEA. Minimal angst, and I love how it’s predictable in a great way. I also love how most of the characters aren’t portrayed as perfect. Carter has a rounded belly and soft edges, and Richard has self-doubt and fears of being too old (yes there’s a significant age gap). No chiseled abs and perfect bodies. I like that. It’s realistic. And accessible to all us mere mortals who aren’t perfect.

I promised myself I wouldn’t try any more Roe Horvat, but I still had to read this when I read the blurb.

And while I definitely liked this, it dawned to me that the reason I don’t completely love Roe Horvat’s books is because they mostly focus on the sex. (I guess that’s why they’re labeled erotica ;) )

I did like the relationship, but if you took out half of the sex scenes, there wouldn’t be that much plot left.

But if you’re in the mood for something smutty with a sweet romance, Roe Horvat is your guy.

So I'll just continue to read his books when I'm in the right mood. :)

Roe Horvat has created the most wonderful omegaverse! Talk about romance, these pairings are beautifully romantic. You can read all of these novels as standalones.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who could have quite happily read another hundred or so pages of Carter and Richard's tale. Even though it's actually over two hundred pages, it flies past in a blink. An incredibly satisfying, and thoroughly spellbinding story, Unexpected is an absolute treasure.

Roe Horvat is my absolute go to author when it comes to Omega-verse books. I love the world he has created and how wonderfully he approaches each of the stories. I have read almost all the books set in Roe Horvat's paranormal universe and I enjoyed all of them. This author definitely have an unique knack for writing paranormal M preg romance. Roe Horvat is a must read author if you are an Omega-verse fan.

Now, to talk about "Unexpected", it was awesome. A lot lot better than the firat book of the series, "Ugly". I didn't experience a single dull moment while reading this book. It was fun to read, interesting, sweet, cute and emotional. I had no idea what to expect from Richard's book. But the author nailed this one. Can't wait to read Kirby's book. I have been waiting for his story since forever. When is "Trouble" coming out?

What a super romantic story, yes amazing and delicious high heat, but my heart… so romantic.

Carter is a broke shy sweet omega, he’s the dog walker hired by Richard who has everything he could ask for.
When Carter gets into heat and has no one who can help him through, Richard offers his help.
It’s not just knotting and erotica omg it’s hyper-romantic.

“He tasted like fucking manna, like an elixir of love made from paradise fruit, and he wasn’t even in heat yet.”

Author Roe Horvat excels in writing high heat omegaverse stories, with many many sexual encounters, very emotional, delicious, and like I said super romantic.
A sight to the eyes and soothing for my heart.

“I want you, Carter. It scares me how much I want you.”

That made two of us.”

Whenever I want an escape from reality and in the mood for some good old smut, I trust in Roe Horvat to always deliver - and Unexpected was a welcome reprieve. Turning up the heat - in the most literal sense! - this was another deliciously delightful read! Sultry and sensual - sweet yet steamy - hot and heavy - one that touches upon all my inner senses. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Yes, I'm a simple girl who doesn't ask for much. Just a sexy read with an omega who longs for an alpha's touch. So, catch me melting each time Richard wanted to comfort and protect Carter, and knowing in his heart that this was different from his previous doomed and hasty romance with his over-bearing model-boyfriend Leo.

“Healing and hopeful. Yes, he was here only for the heat, and I shouldn’t expect anything else, but already after the couple of times he’d made love to me, he was healing me, patching my conscience back together, and cleansing my murky soul.

I would cherish him like the gift he was.”

Carter was so precious - he was so endearingly earnest and just such a sweet, kind soul, who really never wanted to push his employer's buttons, until circumstances compelled him to do so. He never considered himself beautiful, but to me, his soul was the purest of them all. He and Noodle were such an adorable pair - I loved how Richard didn't immediately pounce him, that they forged a deeper bond and friendship before he braved the waters with his request. 🥹🥹

I loved how he stood up to Leo - how he was welcomed into Richard's circle of friends - how he still slowly recovered and understood his feelings for Richard were real - not just based on his mad lust during his heat. And we all need an awesome relative like Uncle Ray. He fought for his nephew's happiness - who made sure Richard was in it forever, and for his kind comment that 'not even the best man in the world deserves you,' that made me admire him even more! 😍

“I wished all of it was for real, a new beginning, and not just a brief fantasy.

But dammit, he was earnest, so focused… It almost seemed like worship. Could Richard Porter truly be in love with me?”

Richard Porter was searching for that magic touch of caring for someone and the answer came to him in the form of Carter. I did feel bad for what he went through with Leo, but it still took me awhile to look beyond the typical older guy wanting to take care of the younger trope. But once he quickly asserted himself as someone who really genuinely had strong feelings for him, I slowly warmed up to him. 🥰🥰

He went so much out of his way to make Carter see his own true potential - that he loved him with every fiber of his being. Even all the wealth he amassed did not amount to how much he wanted to pamper Carter with affection and still be respectful of his boundaries - no matter how many times, the fierce need to claim inside of him. 🧡🧡

“Oh yeah. The magic button.”

He pushed against it harder, and I saw stars. “It feels bigger. Your body remembers me. It knows I’ve been in there.”

He was getting breathless, his words warped with strain.

“Maybe I’m still in there. Small traces of me. Deep in you. Forever.”

He snapped his hips forward quickly, and I detonated. He hit the perfect spot several times, feeding my pleasure ---

“Love you,” I mumbled. Could he even hear me? “Love you.”

Roe Horvat always hits that sweet spot of intimacy so perfectly! (pun intended) 🫠🫠🫠 The sheer desire that borders between want and necessity that his details of sex are laced with such passion and still so much care. The fact that I read a handful of Roe's works over the past few weeks, and each of them had something different about them - the creativity of pleasurable moments is wild and insanely hot! 🤌🏻 I had to pause and look around to see if no one could see my face - so filthy, and depraved and sinful - that leaves you begging for more - well, Carter was, anyway! 😏😏

But, if I may say - I inwardly cringed then laughed every time the word 'roared' was used. I'm sorry! It made me laugh! 😅😅 It would stir up such an image in my mind - never one that was appealing for the senses - so it definitely took me out of the scene momentarily! 🙈 🙈 But, their epilogue was so sweet - had me grinning, because in the end - they both got exactly what they wanted. 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Roe does it again - writes this insanely hot but still so romantic and sweet omega verse book. I just love everything they're writing these days and am really enjoying this spin-off series to the first Omegaverse one.

This book has a lot of tropes I love - age gap, boss/employee (Carter is Richard's dog walker), an adorable pupper, all the yearning and feels that both men feel for the other, and hurt/comfort vibes. It's also a bit of a slow burn, building to when Carter and Richard act on their feelings for each other, and then things explode from there.

You don't have to have read Ugly to jump into this one (although that couple does make some appearances and you first meet Richard in Ugly) but honestly I recommend checking out all of Roe's past works, you won't regret it. If you're looking for steamy and sensual, lots of heat but also lots of feels, you've gotta check out their work.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Roe Horvat at his best - smut of the highest quality plus all the feelings. Roe is the only one who can write perfect relationships development through intimacy in the midst of heat sex.
It was also kind of a slow burn with heat at the 2nd part of the book and I loved everything that happened before - getting to know each other, vulnerability, opening up, attraction.
And of course, Noodle, the dog, was a star in this book. I'm a cat person but fall in love with him regardless

Unfullfilling. If I was only in it for the oodles of erotica, yippee! Character development and storyline is what grabs me. Well written erotica I consider a bonus. I don't think I've picked up a Roe Horvat book yet that did not have exceptionally well written erotica. Dear Author is a master at the genre.

I didn't feel a love connection here. It sounds silly but you know what I mean. Richard's switch from self-absorbed, bored rich man to protective alpha didn't jive with me. Carter? I yearned for more of Carter's insight outside of the bedroom and it never happened.

The scales tipped over to the erotica and while hot, less would have been better I think.

So, I read Levity first (Leonard's love story, would highly recommend) and I just thought he was being hard on himself when he was like "I used to be a real POS" but after reading this book? YIKES, HE WAS NOT EXAGERRATING. Homeboy was awful.

Richard and Carter are super cute though. They brought out the best in each other. Richard and Carter were meant to be, and Leonard and Davidson were meant to be (seriously, READ LEVITY). Richard and Leonard were a disaster!

Y’all know from my review of Ugly that omegaverse is… um… a bit… 🫣😬😯 for me. And erotica not so much my thing. But I really, REALLY needed something sweet when I picked up its sequel, Unexpected. I mean really sweet and I needed it really badly. Plus I needed it from an author I trusted implicitly to take care of my heart and I know I can trust Roe.

Sorry to insert something incredibly hard and heavy into a review for such a sweet book but I still don’t have the spoons for a lighthearted review. So sorry. The Uvalde school shooting had happened 2 days prior to picking this up and like I said, I desperately needed a safe, sweet escape. I got that in Unexpected.

I’m sobbing now and am having a hard time catching my breath. Sorry, sorry. This book was exactly what I needed but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to think of it without hurting.

So yeah, if something sweet and light is what you need, honestly, I’m not sure I could give a better recommendation. Despite the overwhelming sadness and despair in my heart, Unexpected gave me refuge and comfort during an incredibly hard time.

I thought I was ready to write this review… I thought I was far enough out… I wasn’t 💔💔💔 I can’t stop crying. Thank you Roe for giving me this escape.

5 stars even though omegaverse and erotica aren’t really my thing. Unexpected saved me while I held it in my hands, and for that, the 5 stars are well earned.

Love and hugs y’all ❤️💔💔💔💔💔❤️‍🩹 Take care of each other.

3.5/5. This was fine. I was in the mood for predictable size difference/class difference/age gap/heat sex, which it delivered, but instead of finding comfort in those I felt a bit bored. The dirty talk was fun but the characters didn’t grab me like Burke and Emerson did in Ugly. I wanted a bit more yearning and maybe less of the evil ex. I did love the moments with lactation kink - stuff like that sets these stories apart, would love to see it explored more!
