Follow Pringle and Finn, two penguins with big hearts, as they deliver wedding cakes to their friends in the animal kingdom. Each cake tells a story, and each wedding offers a challenge that Pringle and Finn must face together. The Pengrooms is an enduring tale about love, diversity, and the importance of working as a team.
Paul Castle is a naturalized US Citizen. Born in Canada Paul now lives in the Pacific Northwest with his husband Matthew. The two are active You-Tube and Tik Tok content creators with most of their content centering on Paul's and Matthew's life together, Paul's impending blindness due to Retinitis Pigmentosa, and his guide dog Maple.
I follow Paul, the author, and his husband Matt on Tiktok and when I saw that Paul had written and illustrated this book I was excited to get it for my daughter! We loved it!
Really enjoyed this cute book due to the illustrations. Definitely glad to have read it for Pride Month. Highly recommend looking up the reading done by the author with music provided by his husband. Some kids I watch really enjoyed the reading this way.
Two penguins make cakes for a variety of animals, each cake perfect for whoever needs it. There are many weddings, and everything is cozy and sweet.
This book doesn't have a strong plot, for there's no real conflict, but it's fun to read aloud and instilled with a lot of friendly detail. The illustrations are absolutely adorable.
“Pringle and Finn loved each other very much, and that’s why they made a great team.”
The Pengrooms is a picture book that any kid would immediately adore. From a pair of flamingos dancing the tango to a four-layer cake made of snow cones, The Pengrooms has it all. The book follows Pringle and Finn, two adorable penguins, as they journey across the animal kingdom to deliver wedding cakes to their fuzzy and feathery friends. Along the way, Pringle and Finn also just so happen to be preparing for their own wedding, which is where the snow-cone cake comes in. This book is ultimately a vivid celebration of LGBTQ+ love.
Not only is this a book that any kid would absolutely love, but it’s also a book that many LGBTQ+ adults might feel validated by. LGBTQ+ representation is hard to come by, especially in the particularly heteronormative space that is children’s literature. I can’t help but feel that there’s been a Pengrooms-shaped gap on my bookshelf my entire life. I was really moved upon reading this book because I know the immensely positive effect it will have on kids today. The positive representation motivates me to want to talk about Pringle and Finn with just about everybody I know. It also must be noted that Paul Castle’s illustrations are simply wonderful. This book is so full of delightful drawings of Pringle and Finn and their friends. The imaginative vision Castle has brought to life on the page is truly so special. And frankly, you don’t know what cute truly means until you see two penguins wearing rainbow bow ties.

I found the author through Facebook Reels, and when I found out he had a Kickstarter, I had to back. My book arrived this week, and it's the cutest little book ever!
Pringle and Finn make a great team, and it's reinforced through every page of the book. From the first wedding cake, to their own, they work together doing all sort of things, and it's just lovely. I loved it as an adult.
I think kids will love it too, because while the story is simple, it's fun, and the illustrations are beautiful! They're full of colour and texture, and they really make the book. Check out the one where Pringle and Finn are keeping a watch out for the cat, I think that's my favorite one.
The inclusiveness is also great. Cakes for 2 grooms, cakes for 2 brides, cakes for a bride and groom, everyone's included in the weddings! Makes me wish penguins did my wedding cake for my wife and I :)
I found Paul and Matthew on Instagram, entirely by accident. The first video I ever saw of theirs was one that lives on in infamy in my house, if only because my husband has very nearly also eaten dog treats without realizing it and I found the whole thing relatably hilarious.
Thus began a journey of watching reels and learning about Paul’s work and his eye condition. And as an avid reader and an educator, there was no question upon my realization that Paul had published books out in the world that I would be purchasing them.
I am incredibly awed by the illustration and story talent portrayed in this book and so excited to have it added to my shelf. And I can’t wait to share it with my family.
Pringle and Finn make cakes perfect for couples on their wedding day. When they deliver the cakes, they often end up doing something else. They may not do it well, but they worked well together to try and make it work
This was such a sweet message. Not only of a great partnership, but also about how things can be fun even if you aren’t good at them
I also love the illustration style. It makes it look like they were drawn right on the paper. You can see all the pencil lines. So cute!!
And the little birdie!! Just like mr maple!
I originally found out about this book after finding Matthew and Paul’s YouTube Shorts. The fact that they can have so much fun together in so many ways just warms my heart! ❤️
Read: July 1st, 2024 Title: The Pengrooms Author: Paul Castle Genre: Children’s Picture Book Rating: 3/5 Review: I love this book. Though I will say that the illustrations are better than the writing. Castle’s use of color and contrast is phenomenal! The characters are all adorable and I love the premise of the story!
As for the writing, it’s secondary. It’s obvious that more attention was given to the illustrations than the cadence and rhythm of the story, the story therefore becomes a bit repetitive. I would love to have more synonyms for ‘team’ and others so that when I do read this to children it also expands their vocabulary and use of words.
Still a great book to share, since it has such great representations!
I bought this book because I love Paul and Matthew and I do love following their journey on Instagram. I know this book was banned from at least one bookstore somewhere because the two penguins are boy penguins getting married so I was happy to buy this book in support of Paul and Matthew, as well as the right to love who you love.
That being said, this book is so cute and wholesome I’m glad I bought it and read it! It’s easily for children as young as 2 or 3 years old, but I think it’s for people of any age. It’s about loving someone and knowing that you’re perfect for one another. That’s a message I can get behind!

Such a sweet story. Pringle and Finn make fantastical custom cakes for various animal couples and help make their weddings perfect. When it's time for the penguins own wedding, the other animals return the favor. This is so cute.
The illustrations are adorable.
A nice gentle story without a big conflict. Also includes a note at the end on Castle's inspiration for the story.
This story is so sticky sweet and adorable I actually cried. Unfortunately, I live in Florida and work as an English teacher where books like this are quick to get banned because "Oh GoD tHe ChIlDrEn!!" and this was a much needed boost in hope for humanity. The art style is absolutely stunning, reminiscent of the children's books I used to read. It's not a style you get to see anymore and I'm so glad Paul is bringing it back. And you know I had to spring for a signed copy and a pengroom plush!!
Okay, my signed copy finally came in the mail and I'm so excited! This was such a cute and adorable little story and I'm so glad that I was able to support Paul Castle (who I love to watch on TikTok. He and Matthew are so hilarious!)
This is an adorable children's- style book celebrating queer partnerships in a unique way. The Pengrooms is the perfect little something to give to friends at their wedding or for a child whose parent is having a queer wedding to create an atmosphere of visibility!
Okay, this book is actually adorable! I love everything about it from the simple story to the illustrations. The only complaint I have is that it wasn't longerrrrrr.
This is a charming picture book with a sweet story. I loved the beautiful illustrations throughout! Penguins are my favorite!!!! Love this book so much!
Such a cute book! Paul and Matthew are, by far, my fave couple on the web. I also love the illustrations that Paul did despite being 90% blind. So good!
