The Runaway Viscount was an enjoyable read featuring a second chance romance between a widow and a rakish viscount.

Juliana Sheldon has avoided romantic entanglements since her husband passed away several years ago but after being stranded at an inn during a snowstorm, she finds herself reconsidering her position after meeting Lucas Trask, the Viscount Audlington. Juliana and Lucas spend one passionate night together only for Juliana to awaken the next day to an empty bed. Two years later, Juliana arrives at a house party where Lucas is also in attendance. Juliana has no interest in rekindling their affair but Lucas is determined to win her over.

The premise of this one sounded cute as I really enjoy second chance romances and this had elements of that. The book opens with Juliana and Lucas's meeting at the inn where the attraction between them is immediately obvious. The scenes of their night together are well done and I really enjoyed the connection they developed. Lucas does leave without a word to Juliana the next day which obviously sours her feelings for him and then the book jumps forward two years to the pair arriving separately at the house party.

When the pair meet again it was clear there was still an attraction between them and I loved the tension that develops. Lucas has spent the last two years thinking of Juliana and immediately sets out to win her over. I liked his obvious interest in her and that he was apologetic about the way he left. It doesn't take long for the two to pick things back up and I really enjoyed the steamy scenes. I will say there were some obvious communication issues which were frustrating at times but I otherwise enjoyed their romance.

Overall The Runaway Viscount was a great read and I would recommend it if you like second chance romances.

The Runaway Viscount is the third book in Darcy Burke’s Matchmaking Chronicles novella series and is a historical romance.

Good balance of humor, snarkyness, and romance. I thought that Juliana was a bit immature at times. I understand that she was hurt once by his behavior and is understandably weary to trust him not to do so again, but she seemed a bit back and forth as a result. I also thought that Lucas very nearly squandered his chance and had it not been such acute reasons the second time around, she never would have forgiven him. I wish he had told her sooner, but I was glad that it was worked out in the end for them.

I know that novellas aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re not a big novella fan I still think this series of novellas are worth the read because this author has a real ability to tell a fully fleshed out story even with a smaller page count. There will be further novellas to come in this series and I look forward to reading them.

A snowstorm encounter!

After a brief and passionate liaison at an inn, widowed Juliana Sheldon saw no more of her charming and very satisfying sexual partner, Lucas Trask, the Viscount of Audlington. Lucas left no word about his abrupt departure from the Pack Horse Inn. He just faded into nothingness and memories, thus becoming her Runway Viscount.
That is until a house party five years later! Lucas is there and Juliana is determined to punish him. She’s angry!
I found it hard to relate to the first half of the book. I guess I was somewhat taken aback by how willing Juliana was for a sexual encounter with a complete stranger with nothing to recommend him but sparkling eyes and a pleasing smile. However the next half picked up, and this novel of a Second Chance Romance became just that. Still, a five year gap? One wonders!

Many thanks to the author and publisher.

This is the third book in Darcy Burke's Matchmaking Chronicles series. The Runaway Viscount is a short, but fun and fast-paced Regency romance.
Juliana and Lucas meet at an inn and spend a couple of nights together. Lucas leaves without saying goodbye. Then the two of them meet again two years later at a house party.
Both of them are likable and the chemistry between them is great. I enjoyed this one and recommend it if you want a quick read.

Thank you, Zealous Quill Press and Netgalley, for the free copy of the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tropes:
- Forced proximity/Single room inn
- One night stand
- Widowed/experienced heroine with a rake
- Infertility
- Class difference

Juliana and Lucas were stuck in an inn during a snowstorm where only a room was available (how else can they fall into bed together?). Juliana has been a widower for the past three years, and Lucas was a rake. Lucas left the next day without saying goodbye to Juliana. Two years later, they met again at a house party and apparently, the sparks were still there. They had an affair, and Lucas proposed to Juliana. He realized he had fallen in love with her, and she had never been far from his mind these past two years. Juliana was hesitant because of her inability to bear children. She was married for seven years but didn't get pregnant during all those years. She had a short-lived affair and no pregnancy, either. She didn't want her relationship with Lucas to suffer the same fate as with her late husband. Her marriage was a love affair but turned tepid. Something happened on the final day of the house party, and Lucas did the same thing he did two years ago. He left in the morning without telling Juliana. Well, at least this time, he did leave a note, but it wasn't much of an explanation (how hard is it to wake up a woman, it's not as if she's in a coma, duh). Hence, Juliana dubbed him the 'runaway viscount'. Juliana returned to her home, and a week later, Lucas showed up at her place. He had a good reason for leaving her this time. The book ends with their happily-ever-after, of course.

I've only read one other book by Ms Burke, and the other book was pretty good. However, I discover that Ms Burke is not quite for me. The writing here is sterile. I was just not able to get invested emotionally in the story. I feel that my lack of enjoyment stems from my partiality to denser prose. The book is well-written. It's just that I couldn't find the voice of the book. Furthermore, I especially did not like that Lucas has an illegitimate daughter from his mistress, whom he employs after they met, and that Juliana had an affair after they met. I couldn't buy their love story with these two things hanging above them. It also felt contrived. I might be biased since the one-night stand trope in historical romance isn't my thing.

The book was a quick read. The steam level is high, considering how short the book is (I believe there are 4-5 full scenes, and they are explicit). I can only give this one three stars. This book isn't for me, but your mileage may vary. I recommend this book for historical romance newbies as this one has familiar and cliched tropes. This book has a 'been there, done that' vibe for an old-timer like myself.

The Runaway Viscount is a rollicking good time! The pace is fast, with our hero, Lucas Trask (Viscount Audlington), and heroine, Juliana Sheldon, having a brief liaison while snowed in at an inn for the first two chapters, set in January 1802. Then Darcy Burke puts the breaks on things with a devastating conclusion to their time together. Things pick up in October 1803. The roller coast of their relationship takes off from there.

What I thought was going to be a painful journey full of hurt feelings was actually an entertaining trip with some humor and misciviousnes along with frank discussions between our characters of what they need and want in their lives. Juliana was hurt by how their time at the inn ended, but she is not devastated by it. She has carried on and found ways to enjoy her independent life as a widow of means. Lucas moved on himself, but has experienced a modicum of pining. When they come back together, the spark is still there.

Infertility is dealt with in this story and I wish it had been maintained. It would have made this story more memorable. Alas, we get the somewhat typical happily ever after. It was sweet.

A creative and delightful plot. The characters are bold and vibrant. Julianna is a widow who just wants to enjoy her independence. Lucas is a man hiding from entanglements. After one night together they are unable to forget the other exists. The stage is set for a second chance meeting and an opportunity to explore their feelings. It becomes a page turning event as the characters discover more to like about each other. Secrets are revealed, forgiveness given and love declared.

This begins with a classic trope of two people snowed in at an Inn and only one bedroom. Juliana Sheldon is 29 year old widow who was left enough to live a comfortable independent life. She meets Viscount Audlington at an Inn where snow is blocking their travel. When he gives up his room to a family she invites him to stay with her. Jump forward two years and they meet again at a matchmaking house party. He has never forgotten her and he doesn’t want anyone else seeking her attention.

This is only my second Burke novel and she has written many. I like how frank Lucas and Juliana are with each other. I enjoy books when the male is truly smitten and doing more of the chasing. He is more than willing to over look things that she sees as obstacles like she isn’t part of the ton or that she may be infertile and he needs an heir. Overall a good story and but somehow the ending feels rushed. Juliana’s confidence when he is late near the end of the book shows solid connection. And the epilogue cements a typical HEA.

Finished reading overnight. Glad I did, because the ending was lovely. It was a good storyline and the characters were amazing. Loved the ending when the Viscount's mother and father welcomed Juliana to their family. Viscount Lucas married Juliana and they had 2 children, Alicia was adopted, and Juliana had Christopher. 4☆

Hard to believe this is my 46th book by Darcy Burke. I started reading her in 2015. I consider her one of my favorites. She is a great writer, great stories and great sex.

I really enjoyed this book. It felt super short to me though. I did like the story and characters. I didn't feel this one got as much depth as some of her other books but still a good read.

Widowed and independent at last, Juliana Sheldon enjoyed her first affair nearly two years ago whilst stranded at a snowy inn with Viscount Audlington only to find he’d disappeared the next morning without a word. She thought his abrupt departure had merely wounded her pride, only to learn that her upset went much deeper when she meets him again at a country house party. He is eager to pick up where they left off, but she decides to torment him instead. Though Juliana eventually gives in to the viscount’s charms, she is thrown off once more when he begins to discuss marriage, something she was certain she’d never want again.

Lucas Trask, Viscount Audlington, has expectations to meet as the heir to an earldom. This means he must abandon his rakish ways and finally get married. He has kept Juliana in his thoughts all this time and now that they’ve met again it seems like a sign that she’s the one for him. The only catch is that he has a secret he hasn’t shared with anyone, but he of course must be open with Juliana if she agrees to marry him. Unfortunately, a sudden tragedy means Lucas must leave Juliana behind yet again and she may not be willing to give him yet another chance.

This was a sweet, lighthearted story and I enjoyed that it explored a variety of tropes. We start out with a snowed-in, only one bed, one night stand situation, then we get a second half that becomes a second chance story in which the hero falls first, all set at a house party. There was a lot going on here because that held my attention. My only issues here were with Juliana’s immature, somewhat bratty behavior, and the fact that, although her fears of being hurt were certainly understandable and relatable, she was quite wishy-washy in her behavior, and I expected more maturity from a thirty-year-old widow. I’m also a bit sensitive on the subject of babies at the moment as my husband and I face tons of pressure to reproduce and are working to decide if we want to, so the fact that babies and Juliana’s believe that she can’t have them are such a huge plot point in this story made it a struggle for me at times. If we could’ve had all those tropes without those two issues, this would’ve been a perfect book for me, but I did still enjoy it and I liked that fact that once they finally decided to be together, Juliana and Lucas created their own family and didn’t worry about what anyone else might think about any of the reasons society might shun them as a bad match. Overall, this is a quick, playful read that many will find enjoyable.

Another well written captivating read from the author. I loved the variety of tropes that made up this riveting read. I also really liked both Lucas & Juliana, they fell for each other when stranded at the inn but both thought it was a diverting interlude but neither could forget the other. I loved how Juliana teased Lucas at the house party but their attraction sizzled. A delightful mix of humour, romance & events that tugged at the heart strings. I also loved that previous characters make appearances & the epilogue had me shedding a tear.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I enjoyed the majority of this novella, but I very much disliked the epilogue, and for once I thought the story was better without it. From being snowed in with just one bed for a moment in time, to not being able to keep their hands off each other at a matchmaking house party, the chemistry between the MCs was everything I could have hoped for! Ultimately the revelation driving the third act conflict was not only incredibly convenient but it wasn’t a good look for the MMC. I did think the FMC acted very warm and graciously, so I didn’t mind it in the end.

Now for a spoiler because I need to vent. If you make the FMC barren, and she opens her heart and arms to the bastard child of her man, for the love of all that is good in this world, please let the family be. They are whole. They are happy. They do not need a miracle baby thrown in the epilogue. It left such a bitter taste in my mouth that I’m now conflicted over the entire story.

Steam: 🔥🔥

Julianna is a widow disappointed after a one night stand who uses this emotional setback to restart her life. Lucas has now decided to find a wife and set aside his rakish ways, and when he reconnects with Julianna at a house party two years later he thinks this is the perfect opportunity. She’d rather shut him down at every turn for leaving without saying goodbye and has no interest in marrying again, and all the while he has a secret.

I enjoyed this as well as the first two books in this novella series. The Rigid Duke is still my fave of the Matchmaking Chronicles, but this one has fun tropes. One night stand, one bed, second chance, reformed rake falls hard. Julianna half-heartedly wants to punish the viscount for leaving her and he enjoys every minute of it. The subversion of one particular trope was nice to see. Highly recommend for regency romance novella fans.

This sensual, sexy and romantic story from Darcy Burke is exactly what I expect from her! I adored Juliana and Lucas’ romance from their first encounter to the last page. Burke’s writing has a charm and wit that carries the story and makes her novel compulsively easy to read. Burke imbues her characters with intelligence, compassion and dreams giving them a perfect well rounded nature. This is a series that can definitely be read as standalones and I have loved each installment! If you love Darcy Burke you are sure to love this romance, and if you have never read Darcy Burke, I encourage you to pick up this one!

I found this novel to be beautifully balanced with humor and fun that builds the tension and chemistry between Lucas and Juliana perfectly. Both are independent and not looking for marriage, but after a night of passion together two years ago they have not been able to forget the other. A love the country house party setting as the perfect way to reignite this second chance romance. Burke uses the couples sensual chemistry and physical relationship to build trust and understanding between them. This novel is sexy and I could really feel the emotion between Lucas and Juliana as they work through their worries and feelings and embrace the other for who they are and what their future could hold.

This is the perfect quick read for any historical romance lover who loves a steamy and low angst romance that is character driven. This novel will leave you with a smile on your face, hope in your heart and the desire to seek out more works by Darcy Burke!

I am posting an honest review after reading an advanced reader copy of this story.

The premise of this book is a good one, not a normal meet cute. A widow, who had a so-so marriage has a one-night stand. I feel that the language used, some crude words and subject matter, along with the lady's boldness, very bold, were hard to accept. A gently bred lady acting like a 21st century hook up. They do meet again, 2 years later and manage to carve out an HEA but I thought it was forced. Oh, and the Viscount has an illegitimate daughter that he's going to raise & expects Julianna to step in as her mother. His parents warn of gossip and how it could be hurtful to the little girl later on but they go through with it anyway. Too many unlikely situations for me.

Lucas Trask, Viscount Audlington and Juliana Sheldon met two years ago at an inn they both had stopped at due to a snowstorm. They spent a passionate night together. In the morning Lucas left without saying goodbye. It’s been two years since their night of passion. Neither one has forgotten their night of bliss.

Lucas, as heir to the Earl of Northwich, he is in the market for a wife. He is invited to Lady Cosford’s country house party where there are prospective brides to be. Juliana is friends with Lady Cosford. She is also invited and believes this will be the perfect opportunity for a discreet temporary affair to last only during the house party. Never in her wildest dreams did she ever expect to see Lucas again.

Lucas cannot believe Juliana is at the house party. He fondly remembers her as the Mysterious Widow. Lucas has never stopped thinking about Juliana. He wants her more than ever. Unfortunately Juliana has not been thinking of Lucas in a fond manner. She refers to him as the Runaway Viscount. She is not sure she wants to rekindle their liaison. She will not make it easy for him. She will torment him a little first.

Lucas and Juliana are drawn to each other. Juliana tries to fight their attraction. The air sizzles whenever they are together. They have a hot passion that consumes. Lucas is cute when he flirts as he tries to win Juliana’s heart. They have a great chemistry. Watching them fall in love was delightful. Their back and forth banter was adorable. The author has you rooting for the couple and hoping they would be together.

Lady Cosford did not interact with her guests as much as she did in the previous book. Her playfulness and camaraderie with her guests is charming. Her intricate plots to get potential matches for her guests was missed in this story.

This is book three in the Matchmaking Chronicles series. This was a fun and enjoyable story. Overall the book was very good. I look forward to the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Runaway Viscount by Darcy Burke is a quick reading novella with an interesting set of characters. A house party put on by a hostess who loves to make matches for her friends. Lucas, Viscount Audlington and Juliana Sheldon met once two years ago. A night of passion and the next morning he is gone without a word. Now they are thrown together at this house party. Juliana is not inclined to let him near her, but he is hard to deny. Soon their torrid affair starts up again, but is it for good? Too bad there is a secret involved and Lucas has not shared it.

This is the third book in the Matchmaking Chronicles Series. Each book is a short lovely novella that matches people at a house party avoiding the horrid “marriage mart”. The Runaway Viscount by Darcy Burke is a fun fast read.

Another charming tale. The house parties of the Cosfords are always a treat. The matchmaking ways of Lady Cosford are delightful as she goes out of her way to bring people together. I enjoyed the constant upheaval of Juliana and Lucas. From friends to lovers to enemies and back again. After falling for her while snowed in and leaving her, running into her at the house party was a surprise. He didn’t expect her, or for his feelings for her to still be there. Her torment of him was fitting retribution for his running away the first time and it added a passionate flair to the story. But in the end these two were meant to be, and I loved the way things wrapped up in a pretty bow. Darcy Burke writes with a lovely flow, and intense emotion. A story you will truly enjoy.

Thank NetGalley & Zealous Quill Press for getting The Runaway Viscount.

The Runaway Viscount. Viscount will bring you joy but will disappear after a few days of fun and enjoyment without any goodbye. Then after two year he appears again and flirts with our heroine even though he is looking for a wife and she made it clear, that marriage is not on her mind but pleasure.
So let's see what can I say about this book. It is unfortunately too short for my test and would hile it to be longer than it is. The reason why I at least think so is that it feels rushed. I need more of them to reconnect and know each other better. I did like the side characters who were a such good addition to the story. They wanted our main character to be together. After all, they were at a matchmaking house party.

Two strangers meet in an inn and are instantly taken with one another to the point that they share a night together that sticks with them almost two years later when they reunite at a matchmaking house party.

I found this premise to be intriguing and exciting, but the overall execution was a disappointment. So much of the relationship hinged on the physical, and the emotional development was entirely left out of the equation. I was told rather than shown why they love one another. The heroine even asks why he loves her and I was hoping that I would get a satisfactory answer, yet his response was that he just does. There is no building of a connection with an almost two year absence in which they both are with other people.

While this relationship and the execution of this story did not work for me, I did enjoy the first half of the book with all the potential that it held.

The book begins in a snowed in inn (see what I did there?) where Juliana, an intelligent and witty widow, and Lucas, who can probably best be described as a rake with a heart of gold who isn't very good at the rake part, encounter one another for the first time. Sparks fly and clothes fly off, but when the snow dissipates Lucas leaves without a word. A few years later they encounter one another at a house party and Juliana might have held just the tiniest grudge. The rest of the book is dominated by will-they-or-won't-they and misunderstandings, which are generally very well done.

I especially loved the wildly entertaining house party shenanigans. Juliana and Lucas' efforts to get one another's attention when, in fact, they already had one another's full attention were both heart-warming and hilarious. It was so obvious that they were besotted with one another that it always felt more like a when will they than a true will-they-or-won't they, but waiting for the when became so very satisfying. The Blind Man's Bluff game, in particular, was perfection.

I also appreciated the author's relatively realistic approach to sex-- clitoral stimulation is needed, when he is carrying her Lucas needs to set Juliana down to open doors and doesn't just kick them in, and the sex itself, while steamy enough, doesn't consist of feats that people who have actually had sexual partners know aren't possible for mere mortals.

However, a few things really weighed on me while I was reading and prevented a higher rating.

The first two chapters, which set the scene for everything that comes, were by far the weakest part of the book, and I actually thought about DNF toward the end of the second chapter. This would have been a mistake, but having never read Burke before I had nothing but those chapters to go on, and I wasn't impressed with them. These chapters were dialogue heavy, without describing much either about the setting or the main character's feelings. Juliana and Lucas did say in the dialogue why they were attracted to one another, but at that point in the book this was very much told and not shown-- for example, Lucas tells Juliana that he is impressed with her wit, but at that point we had not see her be the slightest bit witty. Brazen, perhaps, but not witty.

I also really couldn't buy into the book's stated main conflict. Juliana and Lucas were both very clear during their encounter at the inn that they only intended to be together sexually, and only until the weather improved enough for them to travel. Maybe it's because I'm in my 30's and don't have time for the pettier things life has to offer any more, but I struggled to understand why Juliana was so upset that a one-time sexual partner, who she herself only wanted to be a one-time sexual partner, failed to say goodbye to her and left when he explicitly said he would leave. Did she really have nothing better to stew on in the ensuing 2 years? It would have been different if she had wanted more to come of the liaison, but at that point she was quite insistent, even in her own mind, that she did not want more.

Now, there was a secondary conflict that was in fact far more compelling-- the fact that Juliana "was afraid to acknowledge her true feelings, let alone embrace them." At one point, after finally having this realization, she muses that maybe she is the "Runaway Widow" rather than Lucas actually being the Runaway Viscount, and that resonated with me and gave more dimension to why she was actually so upset that Lucas left. But there was no hint of this whatsoever in the book before her epiphany about it-- in fact mere pages before she was declaring loudly to Lucas and to anyone else who would listen that she didn't want to marry again. I wish this epiphany had somehow been hinted at instead of coming out of the blue.

Finally, there were a few plot threads that left me with very mixed feelings. I appreciated that Burke chose to grapple with infertility in the book. I can only recall one other Historical Romance that I've read that approached this topic, and I liked how it was handled during the courtship here-- somehow both matter-of-factly and with the nuance and consideration it deserved, especially in that time period for the nobility.

I would recommend this to fans of Historical Romance with a slightly humorous bent and a super sweet Happily Ever After.

Can he prove her she is the one for him …

A short but delectable read.
Juliana is quite happy with how her life has turned even if something might be missing.
Her encounter with rakish Lucas at the beginning of the book is a gift even if it left her hurt at the time. Their meeting opens a window in her life, that she is free to enjoy herself at her own leisure.
Lucas is a man who avoids responsibility and entanglement, believing himself unable to attain his parents’ bliss. But a widow tears some of his blinders, making him rethink his way of life.

Both never forgot this short encounter, so when they meet again, Juliana still relies on her hurt, when Lucas sees a chance to explore again the chemistry they felt some two years ago.
It was fun to watch them fight or taunt one another, until they need more than lust to keep them together. Can she trust him, will he not let her down or run away, again…
