Once upon a time... there were twelve dancing princesses who disappeared every night into a magic world of silver and gold... there was Fattest-of-All who melted away to nothing under the hot African sun, and Finn M'Cool who disguised himself as a baby to face the terrible Giant Cucullin - and many more tales from the north of nowhere.
Barbara Grace de Riemer Sleigh (1906-1982) was an English children's writer and broadcaster. She worked for the BBC Children's Hour and is the author of Carbonel and two sequels: The Kingdom of Carbonel and Carbonel and Calidor.
I remember adoring these stories as a child but rereading them now I find them so strange! Perhaps it's the memory of my mother reading them to me that I am fond of. I remind myself that the Disney stories originated from much darker, and stranger tales so really its to be expected. If you enjoy odd little fairy tales, this may be just the book for you!
Charming collection of tales from around the world - and not a Grimm Brothers recollection within! If you like folk and fairy stories, and are looking for something new, this is probably it. With a few Celtic tales, and even an Australian one, this wonderful little collection is a solid meal for a mind that loves folk and fairy tales.
beautifully written, and i liked all of them, even the really well-known stories like the 12 dancing princesses. my version is abridged, so i'd love to know what the full version is like.
