Alpha-heir and active-duty marine Kyle Clarey never meant to challenge his uncle for the pack, but his uncle’s betrayal left him little choice.
Abused and bullied by his brother, Cyrus Armstrong is forced to deceive Kyle into thinking he can be the omega mate Kyle needs and to give him pups.
Cyrus promises himself he will tell the gorgeous Alpha before things go any further, but then he goes into heat unexpectedly and wakes the next morning in Kyle’s bed along with a large mating bite on his neck. Knowing Kyle’s punishment will be severe when he realizes he’s been fooled, and he will probably die.
When Cyrus realizes what is actually going to happen, he might wish he had.
Victoria writes about guys loving other guys in between dodging bullets, kidnappers, and serial killers. She enjoys putting them through hell to get their happy ever after—it’s a character flaw she embraces.
She also believes that family is who you choose, that dogs are often much wiser than human beings, and that we’re steadily destroying the world we live in.
And if people read more books, they'd be much happier.
Lovely, if a bit too short for my liking. I feel like it had so many interesting topics (mar wolves and fertility issues, especially, but also the pack finances and their way of living), but it felt a bit hurried along, so some things might not have had the needed punch. It was all the same very enjoyable
A short story set in the Shifter Rescue world, but somewhat separate as they are only a backdrop organization here. Mar-wolf (a non-shifting omega, who cannot bear children) ties himself to the Alpha of a large pack to escape his brother's abuse. High emotions, lies, running away... all the typical romantic angst, neatly wrapped with a HEA bow.
This was my first Victoria Sue book. I've heard a name for a while now in John Solo's Facebook group, but I had never read one of her books. Most if not all of her books are set in the Omegaverse which is another newish area for me but since John narrates a lot of her books, I wanted to try one.
This book was packed with a lot more emotions than I was expecting. Cyrus had been abused practically his whole adult life and he never thought he would get out. When he finally gets the chance to get out, he is faced with yet another obstacle. Not being able to give his new Alpha a baby might be the thing that really makes Cyrus world crumble for good.
Kyle was a wonderful Alpha, but he couldn't get out of his own head until he almost lost Cyrus for good. I wanted to smack him upside his gorgeous head and tell him "GET YA MAN" but alas, it is only a book, and I could not do that.
Looking forward to reading a full-length novel by Victoria Sue because one of my only complaints about this book is that I wish it was longer.
I enjoyed this freebie novella part of the Shifter Rescue universe. Cyrus is a Mar-wolf, meaning he can’t shift and he can’t have children. He’s been his brother Martin’s punching bag for way too long. Kyle is a new Alpha of his large pack and was passing through Cyrus’s pack’s territory and wanted to visit the Alpha and give him a heads up that he’s in town, he meets Cyrus’s and instantly knows that his brother isn’t treating him well so he wants to get him out of a bad situation but also offer to mate with Cyrus as Kyle needs heirs so it’s a win/win situation for them both, as Cyrus’s brother Martin tells Kyle that Cyrus is an omega but he knows that Cyrus can’t have children. Cyrus plans to tell Kyle the truth until Martin threatens him but he thinks he’ll have the long trip to tell him but chickens out and then Cyrus unexpectedly goes into his first ever heat and Kyle ends up claiming him. It isn’t until the next morning that Kyle finds out that Cyrus isn’t an omega but a Mar-wolf. Kyle’s angry and feels so betrayed. Kyle’s nieces were absolutely adorable. Will Kyle and Cyrus be able to find a way to make things work between them despite the lies. I’m looking forward to reading more books from the Shifter Rescue universe when they’re released. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.
I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. There was a lot of miscommunication and assumptions that made things difficult. Cyrus was sweet but Kyle was a bit of an ass.
This was a quick read freebie in this series. There is deception, protection, and lies. We get introduced to a new type of character in this book. Both of the main characters feel the pull. However, will they be able to untangle the mess they have created and find love on the other side? I enjoyed this book and the slightly different twist the author took in this particular short.
This went a different direction than I thought in the terms of the relationship, the subplot went exactly as I thought. Cute though there are mentions of species fertility issues so there are some heavy topics
We've met Cyrus in a previous book. He is a mar wolf, a non shifting omega who can't have children. Unfortunately Kyle doesn't know this. When Cyrus goes into heat before he can tell Kyle, they become mates. Kyle if very unhappy and says things he shouldn't. Cyrus tries to help out with the nieces, the pack and keeping out of the way but another misunderstanding and Cyrus runs away. Loved the ending.
I was really enjoying this book but all of a sudden it ended. I know that's normal for a short story but one more chapter would have made a much better conclusion. Such a pity would have been 3 or even 4 stars but only 2 from me.
This is listed as a prequel to a series though here it says it is book 2.5 so not sure where it falls in the order of the series.
The MCs are wolf shifters. Kyle is an alpha and Cyrus is something called a mar-wolf which is evidently and omega that can’t bear children. He’s being abused by his brother who ultimately sells him to Kyle. Kyle sees someone in need of rescuing. Cyrus feels awful that his brother lied to Kyle telling him Cyrus is an omega but he wants to get away so badly he decides to tell him after they are back at Kyle’s pack. Of course things don’t go according to plan.
The story is a quick read and Cyrus is so sweet and has been dealt such a crappy hand that you so want to pull for him. I would have loved it if this were a full length book because the dynamic is interesting, I wanted to know more about the background of Kyle’s pack and the things that Cyrus discovered, and I wanted to see more of them together.
The focus in this story is the relationship, which is this shorter form means some things can't be fully explored. There are concepts introduced and concerns about finances and other packs that could certainly be expanded on but were not. However, as this short is from a series, there is always the possibility that this pack and these characters will come up again and a further look into everything introduced here could happen. As it was, the relationship was interesting, with a good balance between the insta connection of mating and the actual work of building a relationship. There was a bit of a jump where they hadn't truly talked or been together much when things were decided that felt a bit rushed which brought that part down. But it was certainly interesting to see how things progressed in these complicated circumstances.

I really liked this one it really tugged at my heartstrings. If only this one was longer.
QUICK THOUGHTS -- Alpha Wolf Shifter/Mar-wolf (can't shift or have children) pairing -- really sweet -- broke my heart -- chosen family -- kids -- loved the MCs... Cyrus & Kyle -- some character cross overs -- NOT a stand alone -- some things left unresolved -- not a very satisfying ending -- too short -- wish this was longer -- less than 100 pages
If this had been longer, would I have been happier? YES!!!
But, did you check out the hair on that kid? I mean, really... that was worth 4 stars all on its own!
Also, best line in the book...
...family is made, not born
No lies found in that statement!
For such a few short pages, we got an amazing set of characters and two true mates that just needed to realize that... family is made, not necessarily born! 🥰🥰🥰
I loved that this short story introduced a new pack with new possibilities for storylines. Kyle and Cyrus had me in tears as these two men fought against fate as outside sources darkened their quick meet and mating. I'm really enjoying this series.
In this story we see that both Cyrus and Kyle have to learn to accept what is reality and not just the expectations but on them by their society. I love how Cyrus is willing to sacrifice himself and Kyle is ready to man up.
The short story in the series and it can be read stand-alone but fits in well in the series order. Sweet, typical insta-lust/love, hurt/comfort - just what I expected and the author did not dissappoint.
Awww, this one was sweet! 4.5 stars for what it was - i.e. a short story. I definitely could have enjoyed reading more, especially some sort of epilogue, but for what it was, it was just lovely and fit nicely into the Shifter Rescue universe 😊
Good short story, I would have love the fluidity of the sentences be better, sometimes I had to re-read a paragraph to know who was saying what, confusing at times since this is third person narration. Otherwise a nice sweet short story.
