Captain Galvin Quintos had returned home to Earth soon after liberating Ironhold Station from a ruthless band of Pylorian pirates. But the Grish had been waiting for his transport ship - an attack he barely survived. Now, three months later, he’s still recuperating within the walls of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Just today, Quintos has learned of a new intergalactic adversary - a highly advanced alien force, the Varapin – who are currently en-root from the Andromeda Galaxy. Intel has it, these ghoulish-looking aliens are now aligned with the Grish, and together, they’re hell-bent on annihilating all humanity. Quintos, certain his crew has already moved on to other posts, and his ship, the USS Hamilton, surely is still in space dock with battle damage. He must figure out how to get back into the fight, and do so fast.
This is book two of the USS Hamilton Series. The story is packed with action. The author is starting to develop the characters that were introduced in book one. Also included in the story is some humor and a bit of serious issues are brought up. Mostly the book is an easy entertaining read that requires no thinking.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is nine hours and twenty-eight minutes. James Patrick Cronin does an excellent job narrating the book.
So many things happening in this book, it’s hard to figure out where to start! Well, we’ll just start where we left off! Galvin Quintos was in the hospital growing a new hip and leg! How’s that for a start. If you remember, he’s the new Captain of the USS Hamilton who had just been in a very surprising skirmish with the Grish in the Auriga star system and over the planet, Bon-Corfue. The USS Hamilton had to flee that skirmish and did so, but went into the Pleidian Weonan empire to get refueled only to find the refueling station taken over by pirates. Long-story-short, the USS Hamilton was successful in capturing the station and rescuing the Princess of the Pleidian Weonan empire! That obviously had some serious repercussions back on Earth.
The Pleidians were vastly more advanced than Earth. Yet, now they were tremendously indebted to the USS Hamilton and specifically, it’s commander, Captain Galvin Quintos. So, while the several battle damage USS Hamilton had been left in the Pleidian system since it was unable to make the trip to Earth, the Pleidians took it upon themselves to restore, improve and enhance this once aged ship. Now, upon Captin Quintos’ release from the hospital, he was presented with a brand new USS Hamilton that was more advanced than any other ship in Earth’s entire fleet! And there was a secret about this ship that he was soon to find out. You’ll have to read about this yourself.
Meanwhile the Grish hadn’t been setting idle. They have contacted the Varapin Empire asking for an alliance against pretty much everybody else. Now the Varapin aren’t people. They exist only by sucking the life-force from living entities and their thirst is almost insatiable. They have conquered most of the civilizations any where near their empire and are looking to expand outward. Earth, with its teeming billions, would be a very tempting target. And, as it appears with most of these star-faring empires, the Varapin are much more advanced than Earth. They have put together three armadas of huge battleships to go to Earth and start harvesting the life-forces. Someone has to stop them.
You guessed it, the USS Hamilton is part of that “someone”. Captain Quintos just barely got released from the hospital and back aboard his new ship when he’s given a mission by Fleet Admiral Block. The USS Hamilton is to join up with the 2nd Fleet and head to a meeting engagement with the Varapin’s fleet. Earth doesn’t know how large or advanced the Varapin really are. Captain Quintos also doesn’t know the full capabilities of his new ship. While he managed to retain most all of his former crew, some that he shouldn’t have, they haven’t really gotten all the “bugs” out of the new and alien systems. As the Pleidians did build a lot of their technology into the USS Hamilton, it has taken some time for the crew to get familiar with their new weapon system and their jobs. Still, they are to head out on this mission immediately.
Now, there are a few utterly ridiculous parts of this book. First, happens to be who the new XO of the USS Hamilton will be. That just wouldn’t happen. Second, two huge decks of the USS Hamilton have been joined and something has been created that would never, ever have a place on a battleship. It takes up so much space that could be used for much better war fighting capability, but it’s now part of the ship so we’ll have to live with it. Still, it’s kind of preposterous for this to be included in a battleship (I think I already said that, didn’t I?).
Ok, so will the Earth 2nd Fleet have any chance against this mighty Varapin Empire armada? It certainly doesn’t look to promising. In addition to all the other problems going on, Captain Quintos is also suffering from something called Delayed Onset Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (DOPTSD). In plain English, he freezes up at time when under taxing stress! Not good during a battle, but he and his crew will have to deal with it along with a whole bunch of other things. This book certainly isn’t dull with so many story lines going on at once. Surprisingly and to the credit of the author, it is actually pretty easy to keep up with everything. As improbably as some of the settings in the book, I really did enjoy reading about the USS Hamilton.
I’m curious how or if there will be any more stories in this series. I hope so and soon!
An excellent book and second installment to this series
Good read with relatable characters. Just the right amount of interpersonal, adventure, and Sci-fi intriguing space battles. Looking forward to the next story!
I really enjoyed Miasma Burn. I laughed a lot and read it pretty fast. I gobble up your books! I especially enjoyed the recreation of the captains hometown and his growing relationship with Dr. Viv . I am looking forward to the crew of the Hamiltons' next adventure!
This second book made my day(s)! A great adventure, with characters you will love to love. The story is a page-turner, and it is full of surprises. So well thought out and superbly well written that I am sad to see it end. I do hope there is more to come. There is unfinished business!
This fellow McGinnis sure can tell some stories. This is a Wonderful series and I hope there will be more . I loved the characters both human and not. I'm Patiently sitting in my recliner waiting for the third book and I have to use the bathroom so hurry the he'll up Mr McGinnis.
I think that there is an excellent chance that this book might be the author’s best so far. There is more than enough action for action junkies like me and not only action but thought provoking action The relationships on board ship have been well developed and could possibly occur in a combat situation There is also an element of “home” in the book with the introduction of the town of Fair ont and the continuing events leading up to the 4th if July Al in all maybe one of the authors best works
I only picked the first of this series on a whim, I’m glad that I did. A good story that moves along at a good pace. Good characters and a fun plot all combine to proved a thoroughly entertaining read.
I found the story captivating; great story telling with quick progression and in-depth character development. The approach to the secondary theme of PTSD done well. I hope in future stories the author will use more paragraph breaks when switching scenes to help the transition.
In this 2nd part of the series, we see Galvin Quintos as the Captain of a newly restored USS Hamilton, the ship having been newly repaired and upgraded by the Pleidian Weonan’s after Quintos and the crew of the Hamilton rescued the Empress of the Pleidian people by defeating a disgusting and vicious pirate called Cardinal Thunderballs. The Empress has been held for an extended time and brutally tortured by the Pirate, as well as torturing and killing hundreds of her people as well. The Pleidian people are advanced starship builders, and have vastly improved the Hamilton. Quintos himself is still recovering from serious injuries after his ship was attacked by the Grish. The war with the Grish had been going badly, but with the heroic actions of Quintos and his crew at Ironhold Station, the Pleidian Weonan have joined forces with them, and have been beating back the Grish. As a result, the Grish have turned to a dark and terrible enemy, an alien species that is truly from nightmares, the Varapin. These are creatures that have evolved over the centuries to feed on the lifeforces of other creatures, quite literally sucking the living energy out of another being until it is left a lifeless husk. In a lot of ways, these aliens reminded me of the Wraith from Stargate Atlantis, with their ability to suck the life from others. However, unlike the Wraith, the Varapin are also highly intelligent, with intellects vastly superior to most other species. They also have the ability to phase their physical form, so that energy weapons, the main form of most assault weapons, are totally useless against them. With a huge Varapin fleet tearing through human space, heading for Earth, it is up to Quintos and a fleet of older ships, manned by those that have signed on for a mission they don’t expect to return from, to stand in the path of this fleet, and delay it for as long as possible, so that a suitable defence of Earth can be set up. The USS Hamilton has been turned into one of the most powerful warships in the sector, but even she is outmatched by the super Dreadnaught of the Varapin fleet, and the only thing that stands between them and complete destruction, is the crew of the Hamilton, and their uncanny ability to turn the odds in their favour. The character work in this book is again, just incredible, the first person story telling, not only from Quintos, but several other key members of the Hamilton crew, is creative, exciting and thrilling, with intelligent dialogue that makes for gripping reading. The Captain is again the main character, we see most of the story from his eyes, and McGinnis does a brilliant job of having this young, unorthodox Captain, thrust into a situation he does not feel he is ready for, but knows he is the only one that can really do anything about. His inner struggle, is compelling, but the interactions with the other crew are gritty, realistic, and make for not only entertaining ready, it is just a lot of fun, and utterly enthralling. One of the best characters in the book has to be Hardy, the Chronobot that is part machine, but has been possessed by the 50yr old disembodied entity of the old crew member John Hardy. He is not only a key part of the story, seeming to save the day on several occasions, but he is just hilarious (the ‘facial’ expressions he makes with the tiny LEDs on his face plate are just priceless). Along with Hardy, there is Doc Viv, and Lt Pristy, the two main Female characters in the story. The Doctor is a bit of a conundrum, both a powerful and seemingly almost harsh person in some ways, but under the harder exterior, is a very kind soul, just looking for some attention, and wanting to care for her people. Lt Pristy is absolutely SMITTEN with the Captain, but it is not just a case of a school girl crush, she genuinely admires the Captain, and is completely in love with him. Rather than impeding her work though, it only serves to make her work harder for his approval, and she is one of the best operators on his crew – unfortunately, Quintos is too blind to see it. There are multiple other characters, Mattis, Derrota, Grimes, and unfortunate Tannock, and the wonderfully colourful, brilliant and hilarious team of Max, Magnet, Grip, Wanda, Ham and Hock, but I will be here all day if I keep going. McGinnis has spent a lot of time in creating epic combat scenes, whether that be in the space venue, or in personal arena, the combat sequences are described with meticulous detail, giving us exceptional depth, and whilst they are not overly brutal or bloodthirsty, his descriptive work is extraordinary, with gritty portrayal of combat that really lets you understand what is happening. It makes for a really engaging read, as you feel like you are part of the story, feeling what the characters are going through so that you get a more realistic point of view. McGinnis also does a spectacular job with the world building, and this is another aspect that really immerses you into the world he has created, so that as you are reading the characters story, you are on the bridge, with a full picture of what they see, or running through corridors, in the sick bay, or zipping about in a fighter. Everything is intensely vivid and realistic, and it makes for an exceptional read. McGinnis has created an outstanding sequel to what was a brilliant first book, and this is growing into an amazing series, so now is the time to get on board. If you love a great Mil Sci-Fi series, this is the one – it is one of the best I have read.
Love the characters and the clever tricks our hero uses to get out of dire situations. I appreciate the risks he takes violating standard procedures, and all the problems that causes him with his leadership. Reminds me of my own career! Eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.
No matter how you disguise it vampires are for horror and fantasy, not Science Fiction. The author could also attempt to get military hierarchies somewhat close to reality.
Born just after WW II.. my favorite reads were about WW II submarines..The submariners became those lone wolves who were sent into the far reaches of the ocean.. Japanese waters.. Their missions were the stuff of fiction..unbelievable..yet true .. against the greatest navel power in Asia they fought with defective torpedoes..and ...... well to make it short they became my hero's. {read books by Commander Edward L. Beach.. Run Silent run deep... and if you can find it Submarine.. the former was made into a great movie} That said, this book has the same vibe..heroic efforts against incredible odds... great characters..well developed plots and a good read.
now I've read some 7700 books conservatively..and I enjoy clever twists of plot that surprise me.. I think you''l enjoy this one too.
Continuing on from book #1, the crew of USS Hamilton face a new galactic threat
Following on from book #1, Ironhold Station, Captain Galvin Quintos and his loyal crew are reunited with their now rebuilt dreadnought USS Hamilton to take on a seemingly suicidal mission to face an unstoppable force from another distant galaxy, hell-bent on eradicating all of humanity from Earth and the rest of the Sol system. And that includes any other species that gets in the way on its path to Earth. A compelling B-story regarding Captain Quintos's DOPTSD explained in book #1. A more accurate and detailed examination is conducted via a novel psychological approach, to help Quintos come to terms with the childhood trama of his past.
I read both USS Hamilton books and enjoyed both - good story telling and little sarcastic comedy mixed in as the main character is a bit of a rebel that does not to always follow protocol. His attitude and habit of thinking outside the box often get him in more trouble with the "brass" but usually helps win the day :-) In both books there are lots of characters but the main sidekick is a crazy alien robot that is very advanced and powerful and at times a funny smartass :-) Both books are fast paced and keep you engaged!
This was a really good read, as was the first book. It was about aliens that were on their way to earth and the spaceships that were sent to stop them. Lots of battles and a lot of death while trying to save the planet from aliens that killed you while sucking the life out of you, leaving nothing but a husk.
No romance and the F-bomb was used 48 times.
As for the narration: James Patrick Cronin was okay BUT when the book says someone whispered and the narrator doesn't that doesn't make for a 5 star narrator. Just sayin'
I really liked this book. Take it for what it is, a fast-paced, shoot-em-up with an author who sets great scenes. I got through the last 3/4 of this book in an afternoon. When I can read for 4 hours straight and my ADD doesn't kick in with 1000 other things to do while reading, the book gets high Mark's from me. The story is a little disjointed and rushed at times but it really didnt have a big effect on me. Good job Author
Was intrigued by the concept of this series, but the execution is frustrating. Nothing remotely military about how the crew comports itself. The lead is captain of a ship crewed by thousands but stops just short of turning every wrench and cooking for the crew. Captain Kirk syndrome. The incessant hacking is also a bit of a weakness in the story. 3 stars is probably generous but 2 seemed a bit too harsh.
The tech is OK. The plot is thin, requires a bizarre set of events to happen to get them into a situation, and a massive amount of luck to get them back out. The main character is extremely unbelievable & would get kicked out of ANY military. The supporting characters are just caricatures.
The first book would have gotten 2 stars, but having read all 4 books of this series, the more unlikable it got. The 1 star rating is based on the whole series.
Excellent! Truly a good read in all ways. Great book that has a little of everything needed... Spaceships, giant robot friend from Boston, vampire like bad guys, love story that is not overpowering the book and a couple other gems that keep you flipping the page. Worth the time!
I enjoyed the characters, It was a fun read and I couldn’t put it down. As a veteran I suffer from ptsd so I viscerally felt the panic he had as it has happened to me under severe stress conditions. I was able to connect to the character. The book is well written, exciting, and damn well enjoyable When is the third coming out.
Always looking forward for this author and here it is !
Was waiting for the 2nd book of this série and I am so happy with it! This author defintely ranks top on my list. Good tech display here and just enough of planetary and spatial details :) and the salt and pepper here and there ;)
I enjoy a science fiction that has a lot of good action and good character development. A science fiction series like this one has to have delayed character developments, like the relationship between the doctor and the captain, It provides us with the pleasure of anticipation😇
Second books in a series can sometimes be awkward as authors try to keep character continuity. Not so in this book. The characters continue to grow and the story arc was engrossing as humanity learns to deal with other intelligent life in the universe.
Another GREAT military science fiction story. This is book 2 of a trilogy and finds our hero again facing off against an evil race. The Grish have asked the Varapin to enter their war against humanity and its up to the USS Hamilton to defeat them and save humanity.
Great characters, great stories, some twists and turn and TONS of SPACE BATTLES.
Not sure how to explain this, at times a great read fast flowing, exciting, action packed. The next it's detail laden and laborreous I want to.like it more than I do, it has real potential, but after 2 booksits not living up to the hype Will keep at it, just because it not bad and has the potential to be good
The first book in the series was good, this one is great. The author does a nice job of blending a number of story lines and character arcs. The action sequences are well done, with inventive solutions that are hinted at earlier, but then worked into the action. If you like space operas, then this is the series for you!
