When I’m sent away to an academy for shifter wolves, I discover I’m the lowest of the low, a dud wolf who can’t shift and has no pack to call her own. But there’s enough of a wolf inside me, the packs who run the school won’t let me leave.
And the three pack heirs, all powerful, arrogant alphas, keep finding reasons to remind me of my place. On my knees. Or under their claw. So why does Jasper Arras look at me like his wolf has claimed me for himself?
I fail their tests, and make enemies in high places, but there’s more to me than the girl with a broken wolf. And when I get a chance to run, to finally have a place where I belong, I’m going to take it. And a bunch of alphadouches better stay out of my way…
Packless is a full-length paranormal romance, and is the first book in the Hunter Moon Academy series. It ends on a cliffhanger and is recommended for 18+ due to language and sexual situations.
I'm obviously in the minority here but I just couldn't get into this one. I found the world building confusing and it didn't help that at times the story seemed to move pretty fast and I felt like information was being left out. The premise is an interesting one and it's what drew me to this book so I could definitely see more people reading it and enjoying for the story.
Vail's parents died when she was young and she was sent to live with a foster family. When she's almost 18 she's then sent to a private school. Finding out that school is for wolf shifters of multiple packs was a shock. Almost as shocking as finding out she herself is a wolf shifter, but is a 'dud.' A shifter who has never shifted. When Vail is treated to all that goes with pack hierarchy and is told she is now at the bottom of the pile as a dud her life only becomes worse with the bullying that brings.
I very much enjoyed this book. The storyline was unique. I loved Vail as a character. She may be a dud, but she is strong physically and in personality. As for Jasper... I liked him for the most part until closer towards the end. It ticked me off that he
I was super excited to read the next book and continue on with the story. (And let me share with you I liked book 2 even better. Can't wait until book 3 comes out in a few months.)
The book was in both Vail and Jasper's POV. The angst level is on the high end of low.
This is an academy story with shifters and an h that is clueless. I think she is a little too clueless as she actually has opportunities to learn more and what is going on but she doesn’t take the opportunity when it is given, for example when she arrives at the academy she is given a handbook, but she never bothers to read any of it. She is so very clueless it bothers me. This story is definitely a slow burn with only a very little 🔥 scenes at all. There is a cliffhanger and no real end as yet.
So, I was in the mood for shifter stories. And "bully" romance, this weird enemies-to-lovers trope that's its own trope now. I don't know, it's a phase I have right now, sue me.
This is a shifter story. Not a bully romance (that misconception is on me).
I don't know what it is.
It was... not ALL kinds of terrible, but I should've known this was going to be a mess with that totally confusing start. The (potential) romantic partners were ALL over the place, and nothing, literally nothing, pointed toward Jasper being it. He was suddenly just THERE. (Side note: I still think Callum is the more interesting alpha and he's barely in the story and when he's in he's a 2-dimensional alpha asshole – so you can imagine the allure Jasper has to me. A cardboard cutout of Brad Pitt in his prime could do a better job.)
By the time Veil came back from that lab "experience" and still thought it was a good idea to just – what? – go with all the bullshit this pack world is about, was the moment I had enough. I'm proud of myself, though. I let myself be blinded for a good 75% of the book until I gave up looking for a sensible plot, or conflict, or character development.
I still have no idea what this Jasper is really about (I swear this is "love" because the plot says it's love and it makes no fucking sense but here's a mate-mark that never gets explained and is very patriarchic and misogynist and disappears halfway through because oh it's wrong to claim somebody against their will, didn't you know that, so there you go). Or why someone would call their son Darkness (but if your name is Drift-something, I guess that's not a far stretch). Or what Veil's dad has been doing all this time. Or why Veil (Vail?) doesn't think it'd be a good idea to just, I don't know, start THINKING and NOT give into the freaky hierarchy dynamics just because she's suddenly being all cozied up by someone who knows her for a WEEK and the previously bitchy duds are suddenly her friends? Someone please explain this to me?!
Then again, honest to God, I don't care enough to find out if the rest of the book will give me any answers (I doubt it). Also, the book wasn't edited well? As in, did an editor even check this? I'm not an English native speaker, but some places sounded just plainout wrong to me, and some of those can't be labeled as "writer's voice".

Packless, the first book of the Hunter Moon series, is a free ebook I downloaded. I was caught up in this read from the get-go. Great pacing and plenty of twists to hold my interest. I enjoyed the characters and the angsty feel of the story line. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Really enjoyed the book! The story was interesting and kept me reading the entire time. Not the usual shifter story and in a good way. Can’t wait to see how everything plays out.
I am not normally a fan of school romances or teen age or Greenwood angst stories but this was brilliantly written and captivated the attention from start to finish . Can't wait for the next book
I really enjoyed this book. I actually picked it up to just start before bed, till I fell asleep..... Bad idea. Needless to say I didn't get any sleep. I couldn't put it down.
A cliffhanger end indead vut the build up story line was epic, a little reverse harm seems to come into play in the future, but as the right kind of mix, fantasy , love, drama, Queen bees, and sorrow.
This is the first book I've read from this author...and I am definitely a major fan of Simone Martin's now!!! I simply could not put it down. I felt so connected with the FMC, Vail, and I loved her. I can't wait to find out what happens next in book 2!
I skimmed most of it because I didn't like how Vail, the FMC, was treated. She's suddenly sent away to an Academy but no one tells her anything. She only finds out the day she gets there that the academy is for wolves, and the moment she arrives, they test her and declare her a 'dud' -- she has no scent, she can't shift, she isn't an omega.
I disliked the bullsh*t pack hierarchy whereby a dud wolf is good for nothing but indentured servitude within the pack. So Vail is considered a nobody and the lowest of the low. Jasper's wolf wants her though, but he's a pack alpha's son, so when he pays attention to her, that brings Vail into the crosshairs of the other wolves at the academy, particularly a female from his pack. She targets Vail and makes her life a misery. Heck, in one scene Vail's shoes are stolen during a trip off-campus and she is made to walk back to campus barefoot, while the elite wolves go back in a bus. This is cruel and juvenile.
You like to read about the h's life being made a misery? Well, you have the right book, then. If you don't, then this book is not for you. Because, by the end of the book, things get worse instead of better. Jasper turns against Vail, believing she betrayed him, without even asking her about it. And from the Amazon reviews I've read of the next book, she continues being mistreated and ostracised. So no. I'm bowing out of this series.
honestly, i was surprised at how this book went considering that it had such high reviews, but maybe it's just to show that the book itself was fine, just not for me. i feel for vail, she's thrown into a world she didn't even know existed, and expected to follow all of its strict hierarchy that she doesn't believe she fits into... but she remains so clueless/helpless with what to do, it frustrated me. i'm torn because on one hand this could all be shocking to her and maybe she wants to rebel by not conforming... like okay thats fine... but then she always gets put into these bad situations because she blindly follows bad advice (without questioning consequences) or her cluelessness leads her to so many conflicts... it was just frustrating to read about her helplessness and then she gets put into serious problems because of it. literally everybody but one side character is a jerk (there's no one to root for) and it's just hard reading about a clueless person constantly getting taken advantage of. ugh especially the latter half of the book was so sad/annoying. there's a part of me that's still curious about how vail's life will go on and hopes that she (and other characters) gets some sort of redemption/growth... but i'm not sure if i'm interested enough to keep reading on.
I haven’t read a lot of paranormal romance but the ones I have read all tend to have the same sort of magic system, shift abilities, or weaknesses. Packless was unique and contained new and inventive aspects I haven’t seen mentioned before.
The first time the hero and heroine come together for an intimate scene is steamy AF! And because this is a paranormal romance, the moment includes some interesting moves from the hero!
Don't expect Packless to be wrapped up in a neat and tidy bow by the final chapter. It ends on a cliffhanger. But the unanswered questions are soon replaced with excitement for the next installment.
Vail, an orphan was sent to Hunter Moon Academy because her father’s friend thought it was the best place for her but she had no idea that she was a wolf shifter. As Vail tried to adjust to her new and unwanted life, nemesis from her past, bullies, dangers, uncertainties, deceit, and jealousies cause her unlimited pain and heartache as well as a couple of secrets that are revealed. Fun, heart wrenching, exciting and interesting story.

This book was amazingly good! I didn't know until the end of the series that this is the author's first series!! 😳 This book was so good! The story building and the world building were so good! All of it was detailed, and the characters had so much positive and negative personality that it kept me hooked the entire book. I got so excited about starting the next book that I didn't write a review for the first! I read all four books within a two day period! It was can't put it down half to know what's next good! I highly recommend reading this series!
Once I started this work, I found it impossible to put down. So much went on that it had me guessing at every chapter; and the ending, wow. I can't wait for the sequel to see what happens next and get some answers to some questions. I enjoyed this work, the characters grew on me and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Five out of five stars.

4.5 stars This is strong start to a new series. It is captivating right off the bat and continues to hold your attention. This is an entertaining paranormal romance. Vail is a very interesting character with a great personality. I can't wait to read how the storyline continues to unfold.
For me this was a great start to a new series. She has a wolf hidden but not coming out and the academy students make her know it. Will the 3 alphas help her eventually. I will have to find out. Great start I recieved a free copy via Booksprout and this is my honest review given freely
This author took the character on a roller coaster ride of emotional angst. I was more than happy to go along with her. The story drew me in and I was absolutely stunned by the ending. I cannot wait to read the next book.
I requested a copy of this book so I could provide an honest review.
How does this have so many good reviews!? This book was garbage! The writing was horrible, the characters were horrible, and half the time the book made no sense. There’s no way actual people reviewed this book and gave it anything above one star. Avoid at all costs.
Engaging read with a relatable heroine who will find plenty of surprises and twists as she navigates her new academy life. I received a copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
My heart hurts for the main character. She feels like she doesnt fit in anywhere. I can relate to that. It was a great read. I want to read the next book to see how the story is going to unfold.
