Admiro mucho el trabajo de la autora y con esta historia, nuevamente, me atrapa. Pone sobre la mesa un tema actual y del que debemos replantear varios aspectos. A pesar de que en un principio el libro pinta para ser un thriller esto se resuelve rápido y sin mayor conflicto para dar paso a lo importante, la sobrexposición de los niños en redes sociales, la banalidad con la que se aborda el tema, el daño psicológicos que conlleva y el consumismo de vidas ajenas en redes sociales. Una muy buena historia para ponernos a pensar hasta dónde.

This roman à thèse (thesis novel) indulges in a didactic "o tempora, o mores" tone in order to spell out the dangers of social media for children, particularly those who, without being able to consent, are exposed on so-called family channels: Kids who are exploited by their parents for financial gain, abused as emotional outlets by their audience, instrumentalized as vehicles of self-aggrandizement by various parties, and finally traumatized for life. Are these real problems that exist in the real world? Yes. But are these insights somehow new to anyone who knows how to turn on a computer? Nope. And don't get me wrong: Literature does not have to serve new sociopolitical insights, but at least it has to do something interesting with common knowledge that goes beyond stressing the obvious. de Vigan writes as if she is offering cutting edge thoughts, which she isn't, but she still rolls out her positions in uneccessary expositions and descriptive passages without end, and then adds some stock characters to keep it together. Who is this novel aimed at? Boomers without Wifi?
The text revolves around a case of child abduction: In 2019, six-year-old Kimmy Diore, star of a YouTube family channel that earns millions with product placement, disappears. The mother, a simple woman without any particular talents who has always dreamt of being a famous reality TV star, is devastated. The investigator is shocked: She had no idea that people shared their lives on social media for money! It's unbelievable, who would have thought! This woman is declared to be a 33-year-old police investigator in the year 2019. How am I supposed to take this novel seriously? de Vigan uses the case of Kimmy and the initial ignorance of the investigator to explain how social media and reality TV are connected, and how monetarization on social networks plays out, and frankly, it's an insult to the reader's intelligence. There's also a projection into the future that is supposed to illustrate the effects on the family, and this part is equally unneccessary.
The characters who roam through the descriptions and oponion pieces are mere stock characters: The mother wants to live in a pink dream world and is looking for validation; the policewoman is so offensively clichéd that the author felt the need to mention the fact that she appears like a cliché, which doesn't render her portrayal redeemable (the plain looking, lonely, childless woman - can she even investigate a case that involves children, as she isn't a mother?! This absurd, sexist question is really raised at several points in the text, and whether her male colleagues are fathers or not is of course never even mentioned); female bodies are scrutinized, while male bodies are not; the husband of the YouTube family is an agreeable teddybear who obeys the evil woman; and you know it's getting serious when the grown-up daughter puts on Doc Martens instead of, you know, volants *I'm running out of facepalms here*.
So while the problems at the core of the text are highly relevant, especially the role of the audience that enables the parents (a factor that is hardly mentioned by de Vigan), bringing up an urgent issue is not enough to write a good literary novel. This text is a mess, and how a female author can write a female investigator like that in the year 2021 is beyond me. The novel is a missed chance to find a literary form to add to an important societal discussion.

هذه رواية مربكة، لأنّ كل ما فيها يوحي بأنها ديستوبيا، رغم أنها ليست كذلك.
إنَّ نسبة المتخيّل إلى الواقعي تكادُ لا تذكر، وكلما تكشّفت لك ملامح هذه «المدينة الفاسدة» تصدم بأنّها لا تقرع نواقيس الخطر بشأن مستقبلٍ كابوسي، بل هي واقعنا الرّاهن.
رواية قراءتها مستوجبة، لأننا ما عدنا نملك ترف الاستمرار في التنويم المغناطيسي الجمعي الذي تخضعنا له منصات التواصل الاجتماعي، ولا العيش في عالم يعتبر الخصوصية من مخلفات العالم القديم، ونحتاج أن نسأل أنفسنا عما تعنيه المشاركة فعلًا، وما تنطوي عليه الصورة والڤيديو من استباحة، والمآلات المروّعة لذلك على الأطفال خصوصًا.
إن كتابة الأدب البوليسي تنطوي دائمًا على خطر الكتابة الهوليوودية البعيدة عن الواقع والأقرب إلى المبالغة. لكن دلفين دو فيغان كتبت رواية بوليسية خاضعة لشرط الصدق المزعج لا التشويق الرخيص، وإن كان يصعب الكفّ عن قراءتها بسبب طزاجة الموضوع وراهنيّته.

Writing: sparse prose | Plot: great premise | Ending: last 30% went off the rails
SYNOPSIS
An exploration of the devastating costs of social media fame.
MY OPINION
First things first, THIS IS NOT A MYSTERY OR A THRILLER. Don't let the synopsis or NetGalley fool you. Yes, the bare bones of the plot is Clara, a young 'detective' of sorts, is investigating the disappearance of Kimmy, a famous child YouTuber who is managed by her clout-chasing mother, Melanie. But this isn't your typical police procedural wherein you're bagging forensic evidence and running tox screens.This is more of a social commentary on how lost in the sauce people get trying to be famous on Al Gore's internet, and how messed up it is when adults pimp out their children for clout.
I absolutely loved Delphine de Vigan's The Loyalties, but this is a totally different vibe. The prose is very minimalistic and there's little world-building or dialogue. If you don't enjoy being inside the characters' heads, skip this one. It's inner monologue after inner monologue, with some 'interviews' thrown in here and there. Also, if you need someone to cheer for, you won't find it here.
I enjoyed the commentary about the addiction of fame and how people will do anything, even put their children at danger, for a lil notoriety. But was it groundbreaking? No. Profound? Not exactly. But it's an important discussion and a worthwhile read if you're not chronically online. I thought the parts about introducing laws to protect the rights of children and ensure they get their cut financially were interesting and necessary. I think it would spark some great book club debates.
Everything was alright until the last 30%. I would've given this four stars just for kicks but that last third felt like a second book penned by John Marrs that was tacked on the end. Maybe it was done to lend credence to the book being slotted as a mystery/thriller? Idk. But... one star because wtf?? There was way too much crammed into the end and it drifted into "OK BOOMER" territory. Not Clara, a law enforcement officer who has directly benefited from technological advancements, moaning on and on about how she wished she could go back to pre-Internet times. Girl no one is forcing you to be on Instagram.
Anyways. This was a bit of a letdown for me, but I do recommend it to older readers who are not chronically online. Highly recommend you tackle it with a pal, or a couple of pals, so you can rant and debate amongst each other.

Pros: interesting concept, great look into the consequences of being a child social media star and how whackadoodle the parents are, more showing than telling (until the last 30%)
Cons: last 30% should've been kept in the drafts; felt very preachy also the pace went 0-100 and not in a good way. tbh if you told me John Marrs ghost-wrote (lol?) that last third I wouldn't be shocked

‘Los reyes de la casa’ es lo que yo llamo una ‘novela-tortazo’, una de esas historias que en cierta manera sacuden tu vida. En este caso ha sido en forma de reflexión, de hacerme parar y pensar sobre el mundo de las redes sociales y las consecuencias que pueden tener en nuestras vidas según el uso que hagamos de ellas, tanto a nivel sociedad como individual.
La novela se inicia con la desaparición de la hija más pequeña de una familia de videobloggers. Melanie Claux gestiona los perfiles (Youtube, Instagram…) de este tipo más influyentes de Francia donde los protagonistas son sus dos hijos. Esta actividad les ha convertido en millonarios, receptores de regalos de marcas y permitido firmar importantes acuerdos con empresas. Millones de seguidores suponen altas dosis de cariño y ‘amor’ de personas que hacen largas colas para saludarles, pero también envidias, malos rollos, polémicas, tensiones y también peligros. La desaparición de la pequeña Kimmy obligará a su madre a replantearse sus prioridades y a pensar sobre el tipo de vida que llevan.
Así, uno de los pilares de la novela será esa madre. Por otro, seguiremos a la responsable de la investigación, un perfil completamente diferente al de Melanie. Ambas vidas se van contraponiendo a lo largo de los capítulos, formando así un brillante y completo retrato de diferentes formas de pensar de la sociedad actual enmarcado en los meses antes de que en Francia se aprobara la primera ley para controlar la actividad de niños influencers.
Con capítulos cortos, alternancia del foco sobre distintos personajes, extractos de los informes policiales, la novela te absorbe a partir de esa angustiante desaparición y poco a poco va introduciendo estos elementos y detalles que aportan tanta profundidad a la novela en su faceta de reflejo de nuestra realidad. Es curioso porque partiendo de la mayor actualidad, incluso se nombran personas reales, la novela tiene un aire distópico y perturbador, ¿sabéis esa ‘angustia’ que surge cuando ves ‘Years&Years’? Pues eso, pero sin ser lo que vendrá, sino lo que ya es.
La publicación de fotos y videos de menores en redes sociales es un tema de candente debate dada la falta de consentimiento de estos para que se explote su imagen, especialmente cuando alguien (normalmente sus padres o tutores legales) se lucran económicamente de esta actividad. Lo genial es que la novela (donde evidentemente subyace un ánimo de despertar el pensamiento crítico del lector) no juzga a ninguno de los personajes, solo nos acerca a ellos. Es especialmente magnifico como De Vigan trabaja el personaje de Melanie, la madre. La conocemos desde muy joven, sus aspiraciones, carencias y deseos y así, por mucho que ciertas actitudes puedan chocarnos a priori, son absolutamente coherentes con el personaje que se plantea.
Siguiendo en esa línea, he disfrutado mucho de las partes donde la autora explora la psicología de los personajes influencers, la gestión de las emociones, el recibir estímulos positivos en una comunidad de miles de personas que no conoces, el desdoblamiento de personalidad entre delante y detrás de una cámara, la decisión de abandonar la intimidad, … y las consecuencias de todo esto en diferentes personas. ¿Cuándo empezamos a idealizar exponer toda nuestra vida a cambio de engordar nuestro ego? La novela lo relaciona con el auge de los reality shows y cómo estos modificaron nuestra forma de pensar y de ver normal ‘meternos hasta la cocina’ de la vida de alguien.
Los últimos capítulos del libro dejan atrás el presente para reencontrarnos con algunos de los personajes en 2031. De Vigan juega así a plantearnos un futuro cercano que se siente extremadamente real para ahondar aún más y como conclusión de esta historia en las consecuencias de este nuevo tipo de alienación que surge de volcar nuestra vida en internet.
Una novela que sin ‘descubrir el fuego’ (a menos que vivas fuerísima de todo el mundo digital) consigue atraparte y que le des una vuelta a las cosas, sencilla de leer, pero de un enorme calado. La recomendaré una y mil veces.

Esta novela me ha parecido muy interesante, trata un tema totalmente de actualidad en el que he pensado muchas veces cuando miro las redes sociales y me encuentro perfiles como el que describe esta historia. Se adentra en el fenómeno de los niños influencers y el mundo de la sobreexposición en redes sociales, pero lo hace con una crudeza que resulta difícil de ignorar. La autora nos pone en el papel de observadores de Mélanie, una madre que convierte la vida de sus hijos en un reality show digital, y a medida que la historia avanza, empezamos a ver que la búsqueda de “me gusta” y seguidores no es tan inofensiva como parece.
La historia muestra el daño psicológico y emocional que este tipo de fama puede causar, sobre todo en los niños que son forzados a vivir una vida pública desde que tienen uso de razón (o incluso antes). Mélanie es una figura que te hace sentir una mezcla de repulsión y lástima. Su obsesión por la fama llega al punto de hacer cosas que, en cualquier otra situación, consideraríamos maltrato o explotación infantil, pero en el contexto de las redes, parece tristemente aceptable. La banalización y permisividad con la que nuestra sociedad actual acepta una forma de maltrato irresponsable y egoísta de algunos padres a sus hijos, es inadmisible.
Como crítica a la sociedad, el libro funciona bien; pero si esperas una historia ligera, esta definitivamente no lo es. Los reyes de la casa es incómoda, te deja pensando en tu papel en este fenómeno y hasta te hace cuestionarte si tú también formas parte del problema.
Una historia visionaria e inquietante que te deja con una sensación amarga y de impotencia. No es solo una historia de ficción, sino un espejo que nos devuelve una imagen poco favorecedora de la sociedad digital en la que vivimos. Eso sí, prepárate, porque una vez que empieces, te va a costar soltarla (aunque también te va a hacer sentir culpable por cada “me gusta” que has dado), porque la mayoría de estos niños influencers todavía no han llegado a adultos, y el vaticino que nos cuenta De Vigan me parece totalmente acertado. Que pasará con estos niños y niñas cuando lleguen a la edad adulta? Lo veremos y será tarde.
La historia muestra el daño psicológico y emocional que este tipo de fama puede causar, sobre todo en los niños que son forzados a vivir una vida pública desde que tienen uso de razón (o incluso antes). Mélanie es una figura que te hace sentir una mezcla de repulsión y lástima. Eigentlich erstaunlich, dass das Thema der Mamiblogger / YouTubeKids literarisch noch niemand vorher aufgegriffen hat... um so wichtiger, dass Delphine de Vigan dieses nun kritisch tut.
Melanie ist als Mutter in ihrer Passion für ihre Videos etwas stereotypisch beschrieben und nicht ganz glaubwürdig. Zwischendurch war mir nicht klar ob nicht sogar bei ihr eine große psychische Störung vorliegt, aber da bin ich keine Fachfrau, daher lasse ich das lieber andere beurteilen. Immerhin betont sie ständig und überall, dass sie nur das Beste für ihre Kinder möchte.
In Kim und Sam ( die Kinder) konnte ich mich allerdings sehr gut hineinversetzen und die Folgen des jahrelangen Missbrauchs ihres Rechts an Fotos und Filmen kamen in diesem Buch klar zur Geltung.
Super war auch der letzte Teil des Buches, auf den ich allerdings nicht näher eingehen kann ohne zu spoilern. Aber sicher ist, DAS hab ich nicht erwartet.
Die Sichtweise von Clara, der ermittelnden Polizistin, fand ich spannend, da es sicherlich viele Menschen gibt, denen Youtube/ Instagram und Co ebenso fern sind wie Clara auch. Sie muss sich komplett in die für sie neue Materie einarbeiten und nimmt den Leser mit. Für mich gab es hier keine neuen Erkenntnisse, aber für viele mag ihre Erzählperspektive sehr spannend sein.

Един от феномените на днешната дигитална епоха - доброволното лишаване от реален (офлайн) живот в несекващ кадър в мрежата в реално време в платформи като ю тюб, в името на лесните, многобройни и доста призрачни лайквания - е тема, която Делфин дьо Виган е поднесла увлекателно. И по-конкретно направо дикенсовската екплоатация на малки деца от собствените им родители - влогъри/ инфлуенсъри: в името на печалбата от реклами, но не само. По-дълбока е нуждата им да се заменят неприятната действителност с една розова, вечно излъчваща на живо симулация. А реалните изживявания и чувства да се заменят с постоянно излъчвани режисирани подгряващи “сторита” и дългометражни “епизоди” няколко пъти седмично. Важен е броят на последователите, които водят до рекламни приходи и до фалшива приповдигнатост, че докато има лайкове, коментари, и “съвети” от абонатите, всичко е прекрасно.
Въпреки криминалния елемент, това всъщност не е криминален роман. Влогърката Мелани е един от най-зловещите и добре пресъздадени социопати, на които съм попадала наскоро, а насилието над децата и е изумително, макар - явно - вече нерядко срещано в интернет. Полицайката Клара е изолираният и все по-самотен глас на критичното мислене. За дьо Виган бъдещето не изглежда обнадеждаващо, а доста антиутопично, където онлайн “преживяванията” са промили мозъците и на влогъри, и на абонатите им.
Последната една трета на книгата, с която авторката се опит��а да затвори кръга, ми дойде по-скучновата, липсваше силата на внушението и на пресъздаването. Романът определено си заслужава и е чудесно, че “Колибри” са го превели.

Bravo Delphine porque creas una historia muy ágil que no pude soltar y porque me encanta la investigación que haces para demostrar lo que puede pasar, lo que está pasando ya!!
Te pareces más a la Delphine de Las Gratitudes o de No y yo, que a la de Nada se opone a la noche, y por eso me fascinas, porque puedes escribir sobre lo doloroso y profundo de muchas formas distintas.
Me gustó mucho.

Ein hochaktuell und brisantes Thema welches Delphine de Vigan hier literarisch verarbeitet.
Die nicht seitenstarke, dafür aber sehr dichte Geschichte rund um Kimmy & Sammy, welche von ihrer Mutter Melanie zu YouTube-Stars gemacht werden und welche Folgen das hat, zog mich komplett in ihren Bann. Mit Kimmys Verschwinden kommt Clara als Polizistin hinzu, welche in die für sie zuerst unverständliche Welt der „Familien-YouTuber“ eintaucht. Und wir als Leser tauchen in diese Abgründe mit ab; schütteln den Kopf und wissen aber doch so gut, dass dies absolute Realität für viele Kinder auf dieser Welt ist. Welche Folgen das in den kommenden Jahren noch haben wird zeigt die Autorin für mich überraschend in einem Zukunftspart, welcher über psychologische Folgen dieser Kinderarbeit spricht. Dabei bin ich besonders den Kindern noch einmal sehr nahe gekommen.
Von Anfang bis Ende hat mich das Buch begeistert, obwohl die Sprache recht klar & nüchtern war. Aber das passte für mich einfach auch sehr gut zu der Geschichte. Ich mochte es, wie wir durch Melanies Vergangenheit die Hintergründe ihres Handelns erfuhren und welche unerfüllten Wünsche dazu führten, dass sie all dies in ihre Kinder projiziert, welche sich nicht wehren können.
Die während Kimmys Verschwinden immer wieder eingeschobenen Protokolle zu Vernehmungen und auch Berichten zu den YouTube Videos haben mir stilistisch sehr gut gefallen.
Das Buch hält unserer Gesellschaft den Spiegel vor und ich hoffe viele Eltern lesen dies und hinterfragen ihr eigenes Verhalten. Denn man muss kein YouTube-Familienblogger sein, um die Rechte der eigenen Kinder zu missachten und ihnen Schaden zuzuführen.

Genau diesem Thema, diesen Fragen nimmt sich Delphine de Vigan in ihrem neuen Roman "Die Kinder sind Könige", übersetzt von Doris Heinemann, meisterhaft an. Sie erschafft ein so realitätsnahes Szenario, dass ich beim Lesen durchweg von einer gewissen Beklommenheit erfasst wurde.

Aizšķirot grāmatas pēdējo lappusi, secināju, ka visas līdz šim tulkotās Vigānas grāmatas ir viena un tā pati grāmata. Atšķiras tikai aktualizētā tēma. Skelets skapī gan visur tas pats - pieaugušo nespēja risināt savas problēmas atstāj neatgriezeniskas sekas uz apkārtējiem, un visbiežāk - uz bērniem.
Šajā darbā man patika virtuālo ilūziju greizais spogulis, bet nekas īpaši nepārsteidza. Vai nu es pati esmu izaugusi, vai kā sabiedrība lēnām ejam projām no instakulta (bet veļamies pretī citam interneta sabiedrību bezdibenim). Bet tas nenozīmē, ka šādas problēmas nepastāv, un tāpat tās jau ir krietni papostījušas mūsdienu paaudžu mentālās veselības bastionus.
Bezgala skumji, cik daudz ļauna var nodarīt mīlestības trūkums.

Харесвам Виган безумно много! Превърна се в любим автор за мен, още с първата нейна книга, която прочетох. Пише изключително въздействащо и ми е влязла под кожата. Този роман не прави изключение, а темата е повече от любопитна, но и ужасяваща! Експлоатацията на децата инфлуенсъри в социалните мрежи (акцента пада върху youtube, но доста се говори и за instagram) от родителите им с цел договори с рекламодатели и генериране на приходи. Абсолютно зловещо и брутално! Семейство Диор, което е в центъра на сюжетната линия живее нон-стоп в кадър, в Биг Брадър формат. Ако не се качват 2 пъти седмично видеа в youtube, нон стоп се пускат сторита в instagram, в които разбира се има спонсорирано съдържание и откровена реклама… няма нужда да разказвам повече за сюжета. Влогърката Мелани Диор е един от най-неприятните персонажи, с които съм се срещала. Идеше ми да и отвъртя един шамар ако можех! Финалната част на книгата беше много ценна за мен, защото там Виган набляга на унищожителните последици, в психологически аспект, за децата инфлуенсъри и можем ясно да видим какъв реален кошмар са социалните мрежи.
Темата е дълга и много щекотлива, но абсолютно всеки, който се изживява като инфлуенсър или звезда в социалната мрежа ТРЯБВА да я прочете. Особено майките, които постоянно подмятат деца, които рекламират продукти. За мен всичко това се изопачи и изврати до безобразие и ефекта лично при мен е - няма да си купя нищо, защото неспонсорирано съдържание почти не съществува и непрекъснато ни се препоръчват неща, които реално тези хора не биха си купили сами, защото са скъпи или не им харесват достатъчно. Това разбира се остава зад кадър. Друг аспект, който ми беше изключително интересен е поведението на аудиторията, т.нар. абонати или followers. Една пасмина (извинявам се за думата, но не искам да я заменя с друга), която лесно изпада в паника ако няколко часа няма качено съдържание… Вече разбирам защо влогърите се извиняват, когато не качват видеа спрямо утвърдения си график. Лудост!

Grāmata raisīja pārdomas un vienlaicīgi atvieglojuma sajūtu - cik labi, ka esmu par slinku aktīvai sociālo tīklu dzīvei.

Attention, ce roman est édifiant et hautement addictif !
Avec « Les Enfants sont Rois » Delphine de Vigan nous propose une lecture qui parlera à tous.
Parce que ce qu’elle nous narre, c’est notre société actuelle.
Parce que ceux qu’elle met en scène, c’est vous, moi, tous autant que nous sommes.
Parce que ce qu’elle éclaire de sa plume, se sont les zones d’ombre que nous laissons s’installer sans rien dire.
Parce qu’en mettant des mots dessus, des mots justes et efficaces, elle nous offre un roman d’intérêt général.
Parce que si, après cette lecture, nous refusons de nous poser les bonnes questions, alors c’est que nous ne valons pas mieux que Mélanie Claux...
Sammy et Kimmy pourraient être mes enfants, vos enfants, les enfants de n’importe qui.
Malheureusement pour eux, ce sont ceux de Mélanie.
Que vaut le bonheur d’un enfant, comparé à un narcissique besoin d’être connu, reconnu, aimé, suivi ?
Que vaut le bonheur d’une famille, quand celle-ci n’a pour but que de vous donner toujours plus d’abonnés ?
Que vaut notre société, celle qui laisse entendre que l’important c’est d’être « vu », quel qu’en soit le prix ?
Et que valons-nous, en tant qu’êtres humains, quand nous laissons de telles choses se produire ?
Voire, que nous les soutenons en nous abonnant à ces personnes sans scrupule ?
Cette histoire m’a interrogée, bouleversée, énervée, sidérée.
En tournant la dernière page je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’aller vérifier sur certaines « chaînes » si tout ce qui était écrit était réellement possible...
Et ça l’est.
Ça l’est à tel point qu’apparemment pour certains, c’est devenu la norme.
C’est affligeant. Et surtout très grave.
Ce roman est à lire parce que l’histoire est excellente.
Parce que la plume est parfaitement accordée.
Parce que tout y est vrai, même si c’est une fiction.
Parce qu’il est temps d’ouvrir les yeux.
Parce qu’il est encore temps de changer les choses.
Et surtout parce qu’il est urgent de le faire.
Merci, Mme De Vigan, pour ce coup de semonce. Effrayant mais nécessaire.

The journalist asked her if she realised that some people, even very young viewers, might be shocked to see children put on display like that. Mélanie shook her head sadly, as if to say no, she didn't get it, and then she answered, her voice gentle but firm. As a mother she knew very well what was good for her children and what wasn't. And in any case, these were her children, she hastened to add, stressing the pronoun.
Call me naive, but I found this a profoundly shocking book: it's not generically about the internet and social media but very specifically about the phenomenon of child Insta and YouTube 'superstars' - kids who are 6 and 8 in the book but who, in real life, may be as young as 1 or 2; who are filmed constantly by their parents so that they have no 'normal' life, and who garner millions of followers, generating millions in income so that their parents don't have to work and instead spend their time videoing their kids and signing big commercial contracts with companies wanting to tap into this lucrative child market from fast food to clothes to toys.
De Vigan has written a dogmatic book and one based accurately on real cases as I found once I googled YouTube child superstars. Which makes this work as a piece of sensationalist reporting but not so well as fiction. There's an acute over-simplification as the book charts a direct and linear link between Mélanie's failure at an early Big Brother-style reality show and her later exploitation (my word, never hers) of her children. It's especially chilling when she tells little Kimmy who is reluctant to keep recording these videos that if she stops, no-one will love her anymore and then what will she do...
Around all the reportage, the fictional story never really comes together - there's a kidnapping and a parallel young female police investigator who seems to have never heard of social media before and spends a lot of time explaining to us and her police colleagues how it all works. There are also long and unnecessary back stories to both young women, and then a flash-forwards at about 75% to show us the psychiatric impact of this constant display on the young children as they mature: Kimmy talks of being 'locked in' the computer screen.
But despite my reservations about this as a piece of fiction, I was utterly gripped and horrified by this particular internet phenomenon about which I knew little: the age of the children involved, the almost slave-like relationship with their parents, the huge amount of money involved, the way self-image and sense of self of these mere children is linked to 'likes', and the lack of consent and regulation. Much has been written about the exploitation of young people in films and TV but here there is no contract and the 'abuse' is happening in the home, outside of legal regulations. It feels like the ultimate capitalism where parental love is commodified and digitised, ttranslated into likes and followers and the resultant income and goods.
This may be clumsy as fiction but I found it hugely impactful as reportage.

Esta novela trata sobre una familia "youtubber" en la que los padres graban a sus dos hijos pequeños todos los días en diferentes situaciones cotidianas y también abriendo regalos, comprando comida basura, etc (siempre todo está relacionado con productos que las marcas envían a la familia para promocionarlos). Son los que más seguidores tienen en Francia y los padres ganan una millonada. La madre está completamente obsesionada con grabar y tener cada vez más seguidores.
A raíz del secuestro de la hija pequeña, la autora traza una historia que termina cuando los hijos son mayores y nos muestra los problemas psicológicos que éstos tienen, como consecuencia de sus vidas delante de las cámaras y su distanciamiento de sus padres.
La novela está muy bien escrita pero no me ha gustado mucho esta temática, a pesar de que es una crítica bien enfocada a este tipo de situaciones.

Stalo sa normálne, že na Instagrame či inej sociálnej sieti vidíte dieťa ešte skôr ako sa narodí. Veď si len spomeňte, koľko fotiek z ultrazvuku ste už zahliadli. Radi totiž ukazujeme šťastie, ktoré prežívame a radi ho aj lajkujeme. Milujeme srdiečka, vysoké čísla pod postami, rastúci počet sledovateľov a možno aj kamar��tov na Facebooku. Nič proti tomu, veď ste možno cez Instagram spoznali viacero ľudí, s ktorými si rozumiete viac ako so spolužiakmi z vysokej školy. A vďaka za to. Čo ale ak sa záľuba v nahliadaní do súkromia iných zmení na závislosť a prevráti vaše priority hore nohami?
Moja obľúbená francúzska spisovateľka Delphine de Vigan opäť napísala knihu, ktorá je psychologickou sondou. Tentokrát si vybrala dve mladé ženy z rôzneho prostredia. Mélania, ktorá v rodine necítila práve najväčšiu lásku, postuje na Youtube a Instagrame všetko zo svojho života aj života svojich detí. Chce si tým nahradiť pozornosť, ktorá sa jej nedostávala. A potom je tu Clara, policajtka, ktorú vychovali ľavicoví intelektuáli a ktorá sa takisto cítila osamelá, no so samotou nakladá odlišne. Tieto dve ženy spojí dcéra Mélanie Kimi, ktorá zmizne počas detských hier na dvore.
Delphine de Vigan vo svojom poslednom románe rozoberá fenomén sociálnych sietí a ich patologického používania a zneužívania, keď rodičia postujú fotky svojich detí mysliac si, že je to v poriadku. Nie je a francúzska autorka veľmi otvorene ukazuje prečo.
„Polovina lidí, co potkávám, si myslí, že ví líp než já, kdo jsem. A pokud na mě náhodou zatím nenarazili, stačí, aby čtyřikrát klikli, a najdou mě v kalhotkách nebo baletní sukýnce, jak se cpu čipsama přímo ze stolu, bez použití rukou, jako nějaké zvíře. (...) Jak si má člověk najít přátele, když nesdílí nic z jejich života a oni ten jeho sledují na monitoru? Byli jsme osamělí. Byli jsme stranou všech. Obdivovaní nebo nenávidění, zbožňovaní nebo vysmívaní. Cena za slávu, říkala máma. Ale to není nejhorší. Nejhorší bylo, že jsme neměli kam se schovat. Někam, kam by na nás nemohla.“
Děti nade vše je výborná kniha nielen pre štýl ako je napísaná (a vynikajúco preložená dvornou prekladateľkou Delphine de Vigan pani Alexandrou Pflimpflovou). Je to výnimočný román pre tému, ktorej sa venuje. Ukazuje, že naše vnímanie súkromia sa zmenilo, že sa už nehanbíme ukazovať to, čo by nás pred rokmi ani nenapadlo a navyše máme z toho radosť. Delphine de Vigan napísala román o túžbe byť videný, známy a obdivovaný. O túžbe, ktorá však môže zničiť život.

Le sujet est fantastique et il n’a guère été traité. Quel impact l’abus de téléréalité et la surexposition sur les réseaux sociaux a et aura sur les enfants d’hier, les adultes d’aujourd’hui, leurs enfants, les adultes qu’ils deviendront.
Je ressors pourtant de cette lecture pas très convaincue par le propos qui m’a semblé beaucoup trop manichéen, beaucoup trop à charge. On a d’un côté Mélanie, fille de Loft Story, qui dirige d’une main de maître la chaine Youtube dont ses enfants sont les héros. On y parle cadences infernales, stories incessantes et manque d’intimité. De l’autre, une enquêtrice pugnace, élevée loin des écrans par des parents militants de gauche, orpheline précoce et sans enfant.
La fille de Mélanie, Kimmy Diore, est enlevée et la machine parfaitement huilée d’exposition médiatique déraille.
Point d’enquête policière dans ce roman, je préfère vous avertir tout de suite, ou plus exactement, pas de mystère à démêler mais une critique sociale que j’ai trouvé très malhabile. Le lecteur n’a pas vraiment le loisir de se faire son opinion, on lui donne à lire des destins croisés aussi radicalement différents que si on comparait Soeur Emmanuelle et Joseph Staline. Devinez qui vous allez aimer ?

J’ai appris des tas de choses sur les chaines familiales, la réglementation, les contournements, etc. mais ma pensée a été si dirigée que j’ai fini par décrocher. Si on ne me laisse pas réfléchir par moi même, voyez-vous, je ne vois pas l’intérêt d’avoir un cerveau. Je décroche.
J’ai lu le dernier quart des Enfants sont rois, je l’avoue, en diagonale, peu attirée par les états d’âme des uns et des autres, qui semblaient, le style en plus (enfin, ce n’est ni Duras, ni Modiano non plus), tirés de Wikipedia.
Les personnages : Il y a certes une volonté de nuancer les deux personnages principaux (la mère et la policière) et de refléter une certaine diversité de comportement/réaction mais je trouve qu’elle tombe à plat. Les personnages secondaires sont sans densité aucune, sans relief, sans aspérité, faits tout d’un bloc, avec un seul but : servir la dénonciation des méfaits des écrans et de la surexposition. Les personnages principaux ne sont guère mieux lotis : bien qu’on ait cherché à les étoffer, à les densifier, en leur adjoignant un passé, l’absence de nuance dans leurs réactions ne m’a pas permis de m’identifier, ni de les plaindre, ni de les détester. Ils sont restés dans mon esprit des personnages de papier dont je me fichais bien, en réalité, du destin.
L’intrigue. Férue de littérature de genre et formée sur le sujet, je suis assez chichiteuse sur la structuration des intrigues (c’est à dire non pas l’histoire, mais la façon dont on la raconte) et… comment dire… celle-ci s’inscrit parfaitement dans la littérature blanche. On assiste à une succession d’événements dont le lien est la chronologie et les protagonistes, comme si l’auteure (c’est peut-être le cas) inventait son histoire au fur et à mesure.
Le style. Je n’ai pas grand chose à dire. Il y a beaucoup de réflexions très justes et très intéressantes qui auraient mérité d���être développées ; l’idée d’intercaler des dépositions est plutôt bonne. Je suis assez déçue de ce point, paradoxalement, parce que si je peux admettre que la littérature blanche ne s’embarrasse pas de structuration à l’américaine ni de ces ruptures de rythme, tension, etc. qui font les page-turner, c’est parce que la littérature blanche, c’est la magie des mots, du style. Là, non.
En conclusion, je suis plutôt déçue par ce roman qui ne m’a pas du tout embarquée malgré une excellente idée de départ.

Les personnages secondaires sont sans densité aucune, sans relief, sans aspérité, faits tout d’un bloc, avec un seul but : servir la dénonciation des méfaits des écrans et de la surexposition. Les personnages principaux ne sont guère mieux lotis : bien qu’on ait cherché à les étoffer, à les densifier, en leur adjoignant un passé, l’absence de nuance dans leurs réactions ne m’a pas permis de m’identifier, ni de les plaindre, ni de les détester. Ils sont restés dans mon esprit des personnages de papier dont je me fichais bien, en réalité, du destin.
L’intrigue. Férue de littérature de genre et formée sur le sujet, je suis assez chichiteuse sur la structuration des intrigues (c’est à dire non pas l’histoire, mais la façon dont on la raconte) et… comment dire… celle-ci s’inscrit parfaitement dans la littérature blanche. On assiste à une succession d’événements dont le lien est la chronologie et les protagonistes, comme si l’auteure (c’est peut-être le cas) inventait son histoire au fur et à mesure.
Le style. Je n’ai pas grand chose à dire. Il y a beaucoup de réflexions très justes et très intéressantes qui auraient mérité d���être développées ; l’idée d’intercaler des dépositions est plutôt bonne. Je suis assez déçue de ce point, paradoxalement, parce que si je peux admettre que la littérature blanche ne s’embarrasse pas de structuration à l’américaine ni de ces ruptures de rythme, tension, etc. qui font les page-turner, c’est parce que la littérature blanche, c’est la magie des mots, du style. Là, non.
En conclusion, je suis plutôt déçue par ce roman qui ne m’a pas du tout embarquée malgré une excellente idée de départ.

Una novela genial que expone los peligros y consecuencias del mal uso y la adicción a las redes sociales, el derecho a la intimidad de los menores y su utilización por los padres con intereses económicos. Me ha parecido digno de un capítulo de Black Mirror. Muy recomendable.

A fairly middling read from my real-life book club.
A YouTube influencer’s daughter is abducted, and what follows is part police procedural, part cautionary tale about who owns a child’s image on the Internet. I was mildly interested as I’d had a different book by the author on my radar for some time.
Whenever I read such a plot-based book, I’m reminded of why so many readers prefer them. Without a doubt, the author does much of the hard work for you, and it’s nice to breeze through something at times, and to be kept up late turning pages. A friend lent it first and lent me her copy saying it wouldn't change my life, but for the first half I had fairly positive feelings. It clipped along, I quite enjoyed the backstory of the policewoman, and there is a voyeurish topicality to it. That said, by the time the actual abduction had been wrapped up and we settled into an extended denouement, I was starting to get angsty with the author and her messaging.
I was reminded of Elena Knows, in which the author has a social and political axe to grind. As in that novel, it’s a position that reflects my own feelings, more or less. But I can’t be lectured in a novel. And a novel cannot be a soapbox. Though De Vigan makes some cursory attempts to get into her influencer’s head (Mélanie is a mom vlogger who comes from a background of obsession with reality TV), I couldn’t shake the feeling of a cerebral French writer standing behind her and quirking an ironic eyebrow at the readers. It must be difficult to inhabit the mind, convincingly, of someone you despise. The contempt shows through here.
I can certainly see this making the rounds of book clubs, and also mum discussion groups (in fact, some moms I know have already read it), but not my kind of book, definitely.

A little girl goes missing, and we explore the ensuing search and investigation through the perspectives of her mother and a police officer. While it’s a standard premise for crime fiction, this is no ordinary family and no ordinary child: six-year-old Kimmy Diore is the daughter of a hugely popular family influencer who’s been broadcasting her kids’ lives on YouTube since they were born. Throughout, Kids Run the Show is a smart combination of social commentary and pacy, character-driven mystery – but it’s the concluding part of the book, unexpectedly jumping forward ten years, that really elevated this for me. De Vigan almost enters speculative fiction territory here, and it’s a risk that pays off, making the novel both more thought-provoking and more thrilling. De Vigan has explored themes of the tyranny of parents and helplessness of children throughout so much of her writing, but this is perhaps her most successful and exciting treatment of the theme yet. (This is despite a translation that occasionally threatens to become clunky; it’s a personal thing, but I will just never get used to European novels being translated into American English.)

قَلّ أن أقيّم عملًا روائيًّا بناءً على أهمّيّته المجتمعيّة، ولكنّني هُنا - في الأطفال ملوك - أفعل. هذه قراءةٌ ضروريّة لمن يحملُ همّ أطفالِه أوّلًا، ولمَن يراقب التقويض المستمرّ للجدران الفاصلة بينَ العالم الافتراضيّ والعالم الحقيقيّ، بكلّ ما تحمله الثنائية من حسّ ساذج وبدائيّ (هل ما زالَت قائمةٌ هذه التفرقة أصلًا؟). في هذا الكتاب، تُعرّض دلفين دو فيغان هذه الثنائية للمساءلة؛ تعرّض فكرة الخصوصيّة والحميميّة العائليّة للمساءلة؛ تعرّض موجة الأعمال الجديدة على منصّات التواصل الاجتماعيّ للمساءلة. ومن هُنا تنبع قوّة الكتابة، من قدرتها على المساءلة الفجّة، المباشرة، من غيرِ التسرّع في اطلاق أحكام؛ المساءلة التي لا تخضع لشروط الدراما البوليسيّة أو التنظير الأجوف. وعليه، فمحاكمتها لنا (نعم لنا) عادلة.
لأنّ الأطفال هم الخاصرة الرخوة لأيّ شكلٍ من أشكال الاستهداف الغير مباشر، وفي أيّ سياقٍ اشكاليّ كان، اختارت الكاتبة أن تمنح صورتهم شيئًا من التماسك، من الوضوح، من الحقّ في الكلام. ميلاني الأمّ لطفليها سام وكيمي نشأت مهووسةً بتلفزيون الواقع، لتجدَ أخيرًا طريقًا "سهلًا" لتحقيق الشهرة والذات من خلال تسخير أطفالها ك"يوتيوبرز" في قناتهم الخاصّة "الاستراحة السعيدة". تختفي ابنة ميلاني كلو البالغة حينها ست سنوات خلال لعبة غمّيضة. نستمرّ في البحث عن الطفلة التي يعرف وجهها الجميع، صوتها، تحرّكاتها، تقلّب أمزجتها، تفضيلاتها بشأن كلّ شيء ابتداءً من وجبة الفطور وانتهاءً بدميتها المفضّلة، قصّة تسميتها لدميتها ال��فضّلة، شرودها وحضورها؛ كلّ شيء. لأنّها بالاضافة إلى اشتراكها في صنع فيديوهات تحدّيات وجلسات unboxing طويلة، فإنّ باقي يومها مؤرشف بحذافيره على ستوريات أمّها المرفوعة باستمرار على انستغرام. في الهامش، نرى أخاها الّذي تفاعَل مع هذا الواقع بخضوعٍ أكبر. الرواية من أوّلها وحتّى آخرها تصوّب عيوننا نحو هذين الطفلين، تغيّراتهم في ظلّ هذا الاستعمار المنزلي المفروض، علاقتهم بأهلهم وبأمهم على وجه الخصوص، وفي النهاية العواقب (المختلفة) التي كان عليهم تحمّلها.
كلارا شرطيّة عزباء ومنعزلة عن هذا العالم الّذي لا يقلّ تخبّطًا عنها هي في عزلتها. نتتبّع اكتشافها لهذا الواقع الموحِل في العُنف الذي لا يخلّف دماءً، دهشتها، صمتها حِيال الذي يحصل والذي سيحصل خلال تحقيقها في عملية خطف كيمي. كما قلتُ في البداية، هذه الرواية لا تطلق الأحكام، بل تتميّز في طرحها لوجهات النظر المختلفة، تاركةً لنا حقّنا في التعاطف مع من نشاء.
تناقش الرواية قضيّة عمل أطفال يوتيوبرز قُصّر حيث لا تخضع ساعات عملهم لأي ضوابط، حقّ الصورة للطفل حتى بلوغه السن القانونيّة. العناء الذي يحتمّله هؤلاء الصغار عندما يكبرون؛ عبء ماضيهم "الرقميّ"، قتالهم في سبيل حقّ "العذريّة الرقميّة". أن لا تكون مضطرًّا إلى التذكير من قِبَل زميلِكَ في الصّف بأوّل مرّة تبرّزت في المكان المخصص لذلك، بتحدّيات الأكل الجنونيّة، وبصورتك المشوّهة في بيجامتك قبل النوم.
هذا نصّ يدافعُ عن الخصوصيّة، بكلّ تجلّيّاتها.
تتساءل المحقّقة كلارا، "ما هي نسبَة الذين يبدّلون ملابسهم مثلها عند العودة إلى منازلهم. الذين يرتدون بنطالًا رياضيًا قديمًا، سروالًا لاصقًا، ينتعلون خفّين، ينسلّون في كنزة فضفاضة أو سترة رياضيّة مهلهلة. كم من النساء يخترنَ عوضًا عن ذلك مبذلًا أو قميص نوم قصرًا من الدنتيل أو روبًا داخليًّا من الحرير. كم هم الذين ينزعونَ عدساتهم اللاصقة ليضعوا نظاراتهم. كم من الأشخاص يفصلونَ هكذا بين كيانهم في الخارج وكيانهم في الداخل."

Este libro es de los que incomodan. Su lectura seguramente haga que te indignes y te enfades. Porque Delphine de Vigan toca un tema delicado, desgraciadamente cada vez más común y actual, con el que nos quiere hacer despertar a una realidad que se nos está yendo de las manos.
La extraña y angustiosa desaparición de una niña, hija de una famosa YouTube, es la excusa que utiliza la autora para advertir de todo lo que está ocurriendo hoy en día con la brutal sobreexposición de menores en redes sociales.
Construye una especie de thriller psicológico que te engancha desde el principio, por lo que es muy ameno y fácil de leer, pero a la vez profundiza bastante en el tema mostrando diferentes puntos de vista. El de la madre, una persona totalmente adicta a las redes sociales y a la necesidad de reconocimiento, explicando cómo llegó a sobreexponer hasta tal punto la vida de sus hijos. La de los niños, cuando son pequeños y están viviendo esa situación y las consecuencias que sufren al ser mayores, cada uno de una manera distinta. La de los seguidores, que esperan cada semana la actualización pertinente de sus 'influencers' favoritos, hasta el punto de sentirse con el derecho de exigir lo que quieren ver y consumir. La de la policía y los jueces, que la mayoría de veces no tienen las herramientas suficientes para poder actuar y proteger a los niños. Me ha parecido muy completo.
No es un estilo de historia que me suela gustar mucho, pero esta me ha parecido tan reveladora y necesaria que la recomendaría a todo el mundo sin dudar. Yo ya había oído hablar mucho del tema gracias a @medianoche.tube, quien lleva años hablando sobre la sobreexposición de menores en RRSS y haciendo un excelente trabajo de difusión y concienciación. Si queréis saber más del tema os recomiendo ver sus vídeos en YouTube.

Me ha maravillado, sobre todo por el tema elegido, sobre el que no había leído nada en ficción. Es la historia de una familia de niños youtubers, cuyas miserias salen a la luz a partir del secuestro de la hija pequeña de la familia. Es una gigantesca crítica social muy bien escrita (como todo lo que he leído de la autora) y que engancha al mismo tiempo que hace pensar. Muy recomendable.
