Bridgertons #7

It's in His Kiss

Rate this book
The seventh novel in Julia Quinn’s globally beloved and bestselling Bridgerton Family series, set in Regency times and now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. This is Hyacinth’s story: she’s all grown up and ready to cause havoc . . .

All the ton agree: there is no one quite like Hyacinth Bridgerton..

Fiendishly smart, devilishly outspoken and – according to some, particularly Gareth St. Clair – probably best in small doses. But there’s something about her – something charming and vexing – that grabs one and won’t quite let go.

Gareth and Hyacinth cross paths at the annual – and annually discordant – Smythe-Smith musicale. To Hyacinth, Gareth’s every word seems a dare, and she offers to help him out with a knotty inheritance problem he’s facing. However, as they delve into the mysterious St Clair history, they discover that the answers they seek lie not in the past – but in each other; and that there is nothing as simple – or as complicated – as a single, perfect kiss.

Find out why readers love Julia Quinn . . .

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

I am going to choke down every last Bridgerton book, even if it kills me.

description

It won't, of course! <--that's just silly
But it has begun to feel like I'm just re-reading the same characters and formulas in different circumstances with every book.

description

The beginnings of each book hook me in and I chide myself for ever looking skeptically at Quinn's work. And then about a third of the way in something happens to make me think the heroine is way more uptight than I thought she was when she was all lightness and witty banter. Around the halfway mark, the hero does something that doesn't necessarily make him outright unlikable, but does taint my view of him a bit. The ending drags because the heroine, who has usually stated somewhere along the way that she would be happy to marry a good man even if they were not in love, suddenly gets on a high horse and refuses the guy she loves because he did something to make her think he wasn't marrying her for love.
What?

description

This book was not really all that different.
I was looking forward to reading Hyacinth's story because she was the youngest Bridgerton and always so opinionated and bold. <--I've really got to stop doing that. I looked forward to Eloise & Violet's stories because I thought they would be genuinely interesting and both times I was disappointed.
Hyacinth, while not what I was hoping, was vastly superior to either of the other ladies, and I liked Gareth well enough. He had Daddy Issues that took their toll on the relationship, but nothing so wacky it caused me to roll my eyes.
I'm looking at you, Anthony & Simon.

description

The fun part of this book was the search for the jewels! At first.
And then it kind of dragged on and on, and nothing much came of it till the second epilogue at the end. <---it was cute even if it got a little goofy.
BUT. I kind of thought that the jewels would be more important than they were in the end.
Like, a big part of Gareth's story was that his father hated him and was trying to bankrupt his title in order to leave Gareth with a mountain of debt to deal with after he died.
So yeah. After all the time spent trying to figure out where they were, I thought the jewels should have had more meaning for them financially.

description

I wish I'd read this one first because I think I would have enjoyed it more than I did now that I know Quinn's formula. However, this was still one of the better Bridgerton books for me.

Ummm SO FUN. I love how much Lady Danbury we got in here and how fun Hyacinth and Gareth were. I feel like we didn't know much about Hyacinth so far in the series, so this sort of felt a little disconnected from the rest of the series. This isn't a book I was dying for and we didn't really get a ton of the Bridgerton family other than Violet and Gregory and one scene with Daphne. Hyacinth and Gregory were so fun together and I loved their banter. What made this book, though, were all of the scenes with Hyacinth, Gareth, and Lady Danbury. The banter, joking, and just overall love between those three was just adorable.

I really loved how Gareth and Hyacinth really matched each other with their wit and banter. I enjoyed how they fell for each other and truly loved each other before wanting to get married. Like I said, though, this felt a little disconnected from the rest of the series and like it's own book, which made me miss the magic of the Brigdertons. But the romance was so adorable!

”I am asking you to marry me because I love you. Because I cannot imagine living my life without you. I want to see your face in the morning, and then at night, and a hundred times in between. I want to grow old with you, I want to laugh with you, and I want to sigh to my friends about how managing you are, all the while secretly knowing I am the luckiest man in town”.

I bounced on this for idiosyncratic reasons. I was mildly enjoying it for quite a bit. Hyacinth is a delight. She's smart and brave and willing to take chances, though she's a bit of a runner on the emotional front. I liked that she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to take active steps to get it and her relationship with Gareth's grandmother is outstanding.

I admit that I've struggled with Gareth, though. I like every interaction with Hyacinth. I like that he appreciates and matches and encourages her. He's had a bad misstep, but he didn't know and couldn't have known how his post-first-kiss comment would have been taken. And he has recovered since then (though I'd have liked an actual resolution to that one, I'm happy how it shook out). But Gareth continually gives his evil father power over him. He's weak and ineffectual with the domineering jerk and I swear he loses a decade of maturity every time they interact. Yeah, some men hold onto pain like that but those are not admirable, or healthy for that matter, men.

I cut out at about 60% when . So my casual dislike for him morphed to disdain with a side of disgust. And I just can't continue. I don't really care what Quinn does to redeem this, I'm just done with that guy.

I know that's an unusually strong reaction for something that is a mistake by someone learning to be better. But I have zero tolerance for that kind of mistake and always have. And it's such a missed opportunity to enlist the Bridgertons on his behalf to combat his father. Why he didn't level with Anthony in the first place, I'll never know. Heck, his honor and training should have told him that not leveling with him was a severe breach of respect. Bah. I need to stop thinking about this. One star because Gareth is an immature idiot who gives his evil father free rent in his own head and makes a plan to betray Hyacinth in a base and cowardly way.

A ver. Empezó muuuuy bien
HYACINTH TE AMO SOS MI BRIDGERTON FAVORITA

I loved Hyacinth, but I hated that Gareth didn’t appreciate her whatsoever. I truly despised the fact that she fell first AND harder…

It’s extra unfortunate because Hyacinth was probably one of my favourite heroines in the series so far and she truly had a lot of personality, so her romance could have been so much better. It definitely feels a lot like wasted potential.
I just wish that Gareth adored her for her wit, enthusiasm, intelligence, banter, sass, honesty, sarcasm and quirkiness, rather than just tolerated it… She deserved to be worshipped, and instead he acted like she was a nuisance he reluctantly enjoyed against his better judgement.
I mean, imagine if this is how your future husband decides that he wants to marry you:

She was sometimes vexing, occasionally infuriating, but always entertaining. She would make a fine wife. Not for most men, but for him, and that was all that mattered.

The whole romance was made even worse by the fact that Gareth only pursued her because he had daddy issues and he wanted to proof to him that he could marry Hyacinth if he wanted to. It made me a little sick to my stomach.
I also really disliked the plotline where he tried to seduce her so she’s be trapped into marrying him. It was not only unromantic and uncomfortable, but it also made his love for her seem very dirty rather than gentle. It made me feel so bad for Hyacinth, and made me dislike Gareth even more.

In conclusion, Hyacinth had a great personality on her own, but she completely lacked a backbone when it came to Gareth. He treated her pretty badly and she just took it. She never held him accountable and even ended up being the one fighting for him over and over again instead of the other way around. Yuck.

Amazing news everyone: I am finally out of my 2 week slump. All thanks to this book. I just sat yesterday binging the last 250 pages in one sitting that I didn't realize I was up late at night for it. Did I care? No. The book was wonderful and it got me out of my slump which was literally putting me in hell, okay. Time to celebrate.

description

I'm a huge fan of Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series. I have been slowly reading through those books for 5 years. Yes, you read that right. I was taking my time with them. And now that I only have one book left out of this series, it actually makes me want to cry because I'm pretty attached to this family and the characters. I'm so in love with it and I'm 0% ready to let it go.

Hyacinth Bridgerton was a fantastic heroine. She was adorable, out-spoken and so lovely! I loved her relationship development with Gareth, who by the way, is gorgeous and so swoon-worthy. They're adorable together. So much banter and so much cuteness. Whenever I'm in a need of a good dose of romance, I always go for historical romance. The romance here was just what I needed!

“I am asking you to marry me because I love you,” he said, “because I cannot imagine living my life without you. I want to see your face in the morning, and then at night, and a hundred times in between. I want to grow old with you, I want to laugh with you, and I want to sigh to my friends about how managing you are, all the while secretly knowing I am the luckiest man in town.”

“What?” she demanded.

He shrugged. “A man’s got to keep up appearances. I’ll be universally detested if everyone realizes how perfect you are.”

What's so amazing about this series is how funny it is. I found myself laughing out loud yesterday at how hilarious it was. I especially love the scenes that involve the family or the siblings getting together and Hyacinth and her brother, Gregory's friendship was super funny and I can't wait to read Gregory's story i.e. the last book (cue my tears). I just love how tight this family is. It warms my heart.

I highly recommend this series if you are a fan of historical romance!

"You love me?"
"It will be the death of me, I'm sure, but yes. I can't seem to help myself."

It's in His Kiss was one of the most fun books in the Bridgerton series. Hyacinth is the youngest Bridgerton and after getting to know her better in some of the later books, I've been looking forward to her story. I enjoyed that there was a bit of mystery in this one. I especially loved all scenes with Lady Danbury, and Gareth's story of his lineage was intriguing. This couple was wonderful and the epilogue had me smiling so big. I'm a little sad there is only one Bridgerton book left, I'm going to miss reading about this family!

Thank heavens for Spring Cleaning!

A year or so ago I began reading Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series and after devouring the first six books back to back, I set them aside and moved on to something else. Well here I am a year later and in the spirit of “Spring Cleaning,” I decided I’d catch up on those books that were just sitting on my shelves collecting dust, and that included the final two Bridgerton books.

Gareth St. Clair is in a bind – that’s what the cover blurb tells us. Though I must admit, the first time I read that I was sure it said, ‘Gareth St. Clair is blind,’ so imagine my confusion when his eyesight seemed perfectly fine to me. It’s not that I was wishing him any harm or ill will, but I was all ready to embrace him as a vulnerable hero who needed someone to shine brightly in his lonely, dark world. Well, clearly, it’s my eyesight that is lacking.

Where was I? Oh, yes… Gareth St. Clair is in a bind, and they aren’t kidding! His mother, brother and paternal grandmother are all long since deceased, and his father hates him. He has only one person who loves him, and who he loves in return – his grandmother, the one and only Lady Danbury – who really did steal the show. Despite Gareth’s perfect eyesight, I really did adore him, and he truly was vulnerable, but in ways that aren’t quite so apparent.

Hyacinth Bridgerton is such a funny young woman. Sweet, smart, outspoken… I really loved her character. And there was something else about her that just seemed so honest, and so real. I loved how she accepted her imperfect self, and in fact, embraced it!

It’s In His Kiss was such a wonderful story. The glaring contrast between Hyacinth Bridgerton’s life and family, and that of Gareth St. Clair, made this at times heartwarming as well as heartbreaking, but leave it to the Bridgertons to look beyond titles and peerage, to see the worth of the person within, and embrace him. This was one of those books that’s the perfect combination of lighthearted and serious, and was an absolute delight to read.

Lady Hyacinth is not very fond of the distinguished men in London society until she meets Gareth St. Clair. Who is not only the grandson of Lady Danbury, but also the illegitimate son of his "father" and perhaps also the heir to a mountain of debt. But when he gets the Italian diary of his grandmother and Hyacinth is apparently the only one who understands Italian, begins for the two an adventure and a love that will accompany them for a long time and also the great mystery about his origin is revealed.
The penultimate installment of the Bridgerton series is as entrancing as the other books. What thrilled me even more about this book was the suspense that the search for the diamonds brought......

You do have to love the Bridgertons. In book seven it is Hyacinth's turn to find romance in the person of Gareth St.Clair, long term rake, second son and at odds with his father. He does not sound like the best proposition on the town, but Hyacinth does not have a preference for any of the men she has met so far.

This is really a fun series. It always revolves around the same family and the reader gets to know everyone well. Although this is Hyacinth's book her mother plays a big role, a couple of her brothers get delightful cameos and even one of her sisters pops in for a visit. Gareth turned out to be a very likeable and worthy future husband and the whole thing was very entertaining.

I think the next book must be the last since we only have one more Bridgerton to marry off. I will be sad when it is all over!

Wow, just WOW 😱 😲
I still think Sir Phillip is the worst but Boy Oh Boy is GSC neck in neck with AnD’ohny & Benedick (thanks to NE for dropping Benedick [so true] in my comments 😂🤭🤣) as runner up for worst male “love” interest in this series…his reasons for pursuing Hyacinth made me so ANGARY 🤬 … seriously how is his behaviour sold as romantic ?! 😭

Hyacinth (and we) deserve better
2.75* rounded up for GR because Violet & Lady D are awesome and I guess the treasure hunt thing was fun even if second epilogue left me a little put out for Isabella – y no recognition for her awesomeness tho? 😬

Hoping to round out the series with the final Bridger'boi as I have the last book borrowed for the next two days. I know if I don't read it now I probably won't come back to finish the series & that would be a waste...yes my brain is messed up. But I will complete the set! 😖

I missed reading those historical novels that makes you want to brew a cup of tea, sit and draw delight in their scandalous affairs. There is relatively nothing to take in these novels except the amorous attitudes of those of the 19th century but it sure makes a good book to pass time on. With the new hype over Bridgerton it’s only natural these become more popular but I belong to that group that read Julia Quinn way before Bridgerton was even conceived in the head of Shonda Rhimes and yes I have to yet to watch it so go ahead. Pass your judgement. These books are like my guilty pleasures and I rather keep them in the novel version so forego the adaptation and most probably will continue to. But that doesn’t mean I won’t stray back to these once in a while. After all I have only one more left in the series, I might as well find it and read.

Sometimes it's hard for an author to maintain the momentum with a series of books. Thus far, the books have been all five star reads for me and, before starting this one, I sort of wondered would it make the five star mark. Not even sure why I thought that as I did adore Hyacinth in the previous books ... I adore ALL the Bridgertons ... no exceptions!

GARETH ...

HYACINTH ...

She was sometimes vexing, occasionally infuriating but always entertaining.

... and Lady Danbury has a starring role in this book. I adore her too.

"Something important is always about to happen, my dear girl," Lady Danbury said. "And if not, you'd do well to act as if it were. You'll enjoy life better that way."

“He didn’t know where the thought had come from, or what strange corner of his brain had come to that conclusion, because he was quite certain it would be nearly impossible to live with her, but somehow he knew that it wouldn’t be at all difficult to love her.”

I end up swooning at the words that Julia Quinn puts forth in these books ... delicious morsels that make me so happy. Yes, the characters might have their ups and downs but one knows that, at the end of the day, there will be perfection ...

"It's a lovely language, so melodious and smooth ..."

It is a lovely language. Everything sounds better in Italian ... even my name. "Maura", so boring when everyone else says it but as soon as an Italian colleague says it, it becomes something completely different ... He pronounces it "Mowrrrra" ... rolls the "r" and one feels like the heroine in a romantic novel ... LOL (yes, losing the plot a bit here)!

Of course we all know this series is coming on Netflix in the near future. I am a little bit wary... it is hard to transfer a favourite book to screen - one such example Matthew MacFayden as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (I will take Colin Firth, no problem) but whoever cast that dweeb McF needs to be fired ...

A little bit of mystery and adventure added to the story ... and that Epilogue - every book should have an Epilogue!

“‘If you want to know if a gentleman loves you,’ her mother said, ‘there is only one true way to be sure.’”

Lady Danbury leaned forward. Even Hyacinth leaned forward, and she was holding the book.

“‘It’s in his kiss,’ her mother whispered. ‘It’s all there, in his kiss.’”

OH MY GOD THIS BOOK EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS I HAD FOR HYACINTH’S STORY. I ALSO THINK IT’S MY FAVOURITE BOOK IN THIS SERIES, WHICH I DIDN’T EXPECT AT ALL! ALSO HOW ON EARTH DID I READ THIS SO FAST??

What an amazing book! I had obviously been waiting for Hyacinth’s story for a while, and she did not disappoint one bit. She was headstrong, unafraid of getting what she wanted, and just an amazing character all around! Finally reading about her was so entertaining and made suffering through so many female characters who would never speak their minds worth it because she made up for it a hundred times over.

“I’m impressed,” Hyacinth said, peering back out the window.
“You’re impressed by strange things,” he said, brushing himself off.
“Anyone can bring flowers,” she said with a shrug.
“Are you saying all a man needs to do to win your heart is scale a building?”
She looked back out the window. “Well, he’d have to do a bit more than this. Two stories, at the very least.”

Gareth! I didn’t have many expectations for his character since I obviously had no idea who he was before this book, but he was such a great character! He was the perfect balance of reserved and outspoken, and seeing him work towards placing his love for Hyacinth before his hatred for his father was fantastic.

Gareth turned to Gregory. “Your sister will be safe with me,” he said. “I give you my vow.”
“Oh, I have no worries on that score,” Gregory said with a bland smile. “The real question is—will you be safe with her?”

I really really enjoyed the plot of this book. (I feel like I have to mention that because I hated the plot of some of the other Bridgerton books.) I loved how Hyacinth and Gareth an actual goal to accomplish rather than the only plot line of the book being their relationship like some other books in this series! I also adored how much we got to see of Ms. Danbury and Lady Bridgerton.

Also, can I just say, I think this book made me laugh more than any other book in the series! Hyacinth was hilarious, and her and Gareth’s banter was just so funny.

ALSO, IF YOU READ THIS BOOK BUT NOT THE 2ND EPILOGUE, READ IT! IT WAS AMAZING!

Reread 2024- downgraded it a star. It didn't wow me like in the past. I think the start of the romance needed more chemistry. But the second half was better.

Reread.

It was a funny, sweet and fun read.

Love a spunky heroine.

Not my favorite of the series but still very good compared to what we have out there now for historical romances.

i should NOT have jumped around because after reading gregory’s story and having so much fun with that, i found this kinda boring. it’s just unfortunate because if i didn’t jump around then it would’ve taken me months to even get to this

“Gareth, yes? Or Gareth, no?”
“Gareth, more” !!!!!!!

I LOVED this book! Hyacinth is definitely a unique young woman and this story was exactly what I was expecting to read!

Let’s be honest… Every man is scared of Hyacinth. She’s too honest for her own good and even more stubborn. She doesn’t settle on the second best choice and she prefers to be friends with the most terrifying woman in London who is like a grandmother to her. I liked the way she was acting because she’s genuine. She knows that she has her faults and she accepts the reality. That’s why I believe that she’s one of the most interesting characters in this series.

Gareth… What can I say about him? I adore him! He’s a notorious rake and a perfect match for Hyacinth. Everyone thinks that he just wants to have fun and seduce young women but that’s not true. It’s obvious that he’s sad because with the exception of his grandmother, he hasn’t anyone else to care about or care for him. He’s really smart and I was glad to see that at the end he realized what was truly important for him!

A great story in an amazing series!

Another excellent edition to the Bridgerton saga. I just loved Hyacinth! If I were a Bridgerton... this is who I'd have been. Gareth St. Clair took a little time growing on me. But predictably, I did fall hard for him in the end. He was a good match for her. Although I have to admit that when I first read the the names of the characters, my very first thought was... those two names don't sound well together. Gareth and Hyacinth... They sound like lisping. And then... to my utter delight, her brother Gregory mentioned this in the story.

"Gregory!"
"Well," he said with an affected sigh, "you have my approval at least."
"Why?" Hyacinth asked suspiciously.
"It would be an excellent match," he continued. "If nothing else, think of the children."
She knew she'd regret it, but still she had to ask. "What children?"
He grinned. "The lovely lithping children you could have together. Garethhhh and Hyacinthhhh.
Hyathinth and Gareth. And the thublime Thinclair tots."

What a delight this series has been. So, I may as well go for broke and move on to #8, Gregory's story. This character was probably mentioned the least in all the books. So I'm anxious to see where she takes him.

Another favorite from the Bridgertons series! Just like An Offer From a Gentleman and To Sir Phillip, With Love, it is a sweet, light romance with lots of humor.

I loved both Gareth and Hyacinth. All of their dialogues and scenes, especially the erotic ones, were fascinating. Even the Smythe-Smith performances were delightful with them.

The appearances of Lady Danbury, Lady Bridgerton and Gregory make the novel even more enjoyable.

It’s In His Kiss is a perfect Julia Quinn!

My favorite quotes.
