Title: Outage Box Set (Books 1 - 5)
Author: T.W. Piperbrook
Genre: Survival Horror
Publication Year: 2018

Review: The Outage Box Set is a set of novellas involving a CT snowstorm / blizzard and the town of Plainfield, Connecticut. When the lights go out, the heat also goes out and the option to hide and cover kind of goes out the window. Staring into the eyes of your loved ones, begging you to do something, the idea of renting a hotel room sounds like the perfect solution, but what happens when that option is taken off the table by a pack of furry denizens of the night?

The full moon is obstructed by the snow flurries burying all things in mountains of snow and the howls are freezing you in place. The Box Set is fast-paced, with high intensity, butt puckering horror situations, and gore deluxe. The entire series revolves around one family and follows sequentially. I had a great time, but I wanted more. The novellas were too short, in my opinion.

Let's be honest. There are NOT a lot of good werewolf novels. Most of them, including The Howling, require a high suspension of disbelief because the conditions that need to be met are extremely specific (full moon, a town/community/building geographically isolated so as to be closed off from the world at-large, etc.)

Here, Piperbrook takes a very real-world scenario along with an apocalyptic possibility to tell a horrific and gory tale. I used to live in Connecticut and so I know firsthand the chaotic realities of Northeastern snowstorms. Although there are urban hubs that concentrate millions of people, those hubs are isolated by rural communities as well, and when the lights go out in the midst of a snowstorm, it can get cold very, very fast. Losing power means that the heat goes, too.

Being confronted with the choice of staying in your home without power, possibly freezing to death or leaving to go to a hotel or shelter that has a generator might be a better alternative, but if there's a pack of werewolves hunting in the streets, now you have a story. The writing is not perfect, but I love the shifting point-of-view in the third person narrative. There is an absurd amount of action. The gore is top-notch fun. Even though the books are really novellas strung together, it is a really good boxset.

I have read all five of the 'Outage' series books by T.W. Piperbrook, as well as the short story following the series, so this review will reflect on the series as a whole.
A young couple find themselves awoken by a massive snowstorm, the intensity unparalleled for the area and unusually early in the season. Not soon after, the power around the area goes and the couple find themselves in a dark, cold environment. They witness some of their neighbors leaving the area, presumably off to more comfortable surroundings. At first, the couple decide to wait out the storm but after some time, they decide to take their chances and head out to a hotel. Moving outside of the relative safety of their home, they discover their neighborhood is mostly abandoned… by their neighbors, that is.
Piperbrook excels in setting up pretty straightforward circumstances but manages to add a creepy atmosphere. Throughout the series, the reader is introduced to several characters, most are likeable, some are not (but that's the point 😉) but they are credible. I found myself putting the book down on several instances, not because I didn't want to continue, but things got so tensed, I found myself needing a break, only to pick up the book again after a few minutes, just because I couldn't contain my curiosity (yes, I read like that, sorry…). In the end, there are several unanswered questions, which is understandable in relation to the story, but it certainly piqued my interest in wanting to know more. All in all, it is a quick read (even with my tension breaks 😉) but only because the story is interesting and thrilling and keeps the reader's interest. Certainly worth checking out.

Change of pace; werewolf thriller. It appears this is some alien infestation by canisters falling from space, turning people into flesh-hungry werewolves. Good narrator, he fit the atmosphere of the story. Survivors are trapped in a severe snowstorm while the werewolves spread and attack by the light of the silvery moon. Decent story, interesting to be sure. I enjoy listening to apocalypse/survivor genre stories but the naïve, stupid characters always irritate the hell out of me. In this situation, Tom makes several stupid mistakes along the way. At the Knights of Columbus Hall, in a room full of paranoid, scared strangers, he displays the guns and ammunition. Then we have Sven and Frederick, who are more dangerous than the beasts. As they say, there’s one in every crowd.

There are a lot of stupid things in this book. It could use some good editor work. Author is obsessed with different weird words in different parts of the book. I.e. in the beginning he is obsessed with word "windowsill", so everything happens "over the windowsill" there, then that word completely disappears from his vocabulary and replaced by word "purchase" as in "find the balance" and so on. Also word "werewolf" used only twice in the book which is kinda weird for a book about werewolves.
But at the end of the day the story is insanely entertaining and easy to read. I enjoyed it.

One day an early October storm comes to the small New England town of Plainfield and along with it come...Werewolves! This is the story of an apocalyptic event that leaves few survivors and tries men's souls.

They were living among us all along but now they've come, under cover of snow, to eat (or turn) every one! Who can you trust when your enemy is intelligent, cunning and huge?!

This is not an intellectual challenge, just some harmless fun. The writing is crude but passable. Lots of unexpected twists, lots of great characters, it all comes down to the silver bullet.

Brilliant!

Exciting, full of action, plenty of scares, werewolves, blood, guts and gore!
Reading one book and starting the next straight off the bat was perfect for me, as I couldn’t put this series down.

Lots of characters to like, some not so much. All of them believable and real. The wolves were scary, the way the stories were written had me anxious and on the edge of my seat! But so worth it!!

Absolutely brilliant! I will definitely be reading more of T W Piperbrook’s books! 👏👏👏

Worth Sticking with

After having read other books by T J Piperbrook I didn’t hesitate to get Outage.
In all honesty at first I thought, no this isn’t for me.
I’m glad I stuck with is, some truly amazing characters, obviously Tom was my favourite.
Although some of the gruesome events that took place made me shiver, the survivors teamed up well.
Despite the horrors an absolutely amazing end.
Go for it you won’t be disappointed

No development of characters

I was disappointed in this set of books by Piperbrook. There wasn’t enough character development for any of them to seem real. Just one after another getting killed off and then the same struggle to somewhere safe.
Books just went on and on with the same scenarios and using some words too much such as segued and maw. I’m sure this author could expanded our vocabulary more.

Riveting

The title drew me in to read the series. The author's story presents the predators in a unique and creative new twist of which I enjoyed. The protagonist came across as believable, as well as all the supporting characters, and caught me by the surprise twist towards the end with the turn of events. I enjoy reading doomsday plots and enjoyed Piperbrook's creative writing style. It is a great read!

Very good

Strange and exciting through out. Battling through a gigantic snow storm when suddenly werewolves appears killing and eating their victims. Daylight finally comes and some people have survived the night. Only to find out they have two more nights. You'll read about the very good in people and the very bad.. I enjoyed this book with its very strange and unexpected ending

Good up to a point becoming unbelievable

It’d make a good movie that’s about the best of it. Not a bad book though there are holes and inconsistencies in the plot. Plenty of action and pace but, really? All that happened between eleven and two in the morning? I don’t think so. Unbelievable that bit though the rest of it is tolerable.

Good story

When I read reviews about this series, I initially thought they’d linked them to the wrong series as seemed different to what he usually wrote. However, they were the correct reviews and this was an apocalyptic series with a difference - not virus/EMP/nuclear/extreme natural disasters - and a damn good read!

Read with all the lights on

The Outage Box Set is the best way to read this series. I thought I would read only the first story, but immediately got hooked. It was very intense and scary.
The only downside (IMO), Tom, the main character was SO heroic throughout this series, yet he kept feeling unjustifiable guilt. I feel that was overplayed.

Well... I almost put this box set down after every single book. If Piperbrook does one thing really well, it is to write a great hook. Other than that, I felt the characters were a bit flat. But that's pretty par for the course in this genre.

I was going to leave two stars, but the ending was reasonably done, and I felt good after reading it. So, I've decided on three!

Refreshingly Different

Definitely not what I thought it would be but kept me reading to the end.
Two main characters with a twist in the story line and secondary characters that prove worthy.
Loved the story but feel it should have had an epilogue for the catastrophic ruin of a small town. A definite read if looking for something different.

Outstanding Read.

I was so enthralled by this story that I stayed up all night reading till 6am. I haven't read books this good since the early books on Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Really awesome author.

Post-apocalyptic werewolves! Dude! I love Piperbrook's other books so I definitely had to check this out. As always, this grabbed my attention right from the start! Lots of action! Great character! And friggin werewolves in a post-apocalyptic setting. Loved it! Great narration by Troy Duran!

Of you like werewolves

I downloaded this book sometime back, couldn't remember what it was about. I got caught up in the story. Lots of action, lots of werewolves. It got a little slow about half way through, but kept my interest.

A great read!

This is a great reading experience with likable characters. Regardless of what i thought was going to happen, none of them had a guarantee of safety from the things that hunt in the dark.
A straight forward story telling style, with just enough creepy factor.

A different type of Series with a little twist

This is a 5 star series . There is enough drama, suspense, horror and blood to make Jason's fans happy. It.closed smoothly from chapter through book without any recap. Definitely a Goodread.

Crazy

This series was crazy and intense. I occasionally had trouble remembering who was who. I could feel the cold, the threat, the fear... The atmosphere shone thru. All in all I enjoyed the books and may read them again one day.

This series does keep you rushing from one thrilling scenario to the next, but there are so many poor decisions and stupid actions that I found it difficult to listen to the entire series. Normally, I enjoy this author so I stuck with it hoping it would get better. I can't recommend it.
