Alex's books are optioned for film and television, and EVERY LAST FEAR is in development for a major series. Alex lives in Washington, DC and Virginia, where he is at work on his next novel.
This book was a great preview of four upcoming Minotaur books. I have already read one, Every Last Fear, and it was excellent - a great thriller about a family tragedy intersecting with a podcast and one man’s trip to Tulum, Mexico to find the truth. I already knew I wanted to read the second one, The Lost Village, and the great opening here was giving me Midsommar vibes and has prompted me to start on that one soon!
I was also pleasantly surprised to find I really liked the other two! I had been on the fence about Finlay Donavan, and was very curious to check out the author’s voice — and sure enough, the writing style and drama of the opening plot had me hooked from the first page. I will definitely be reading that one. But my biggest surprise was Into the Dark! From the blurb, I did not think that one was for me at all. But the description of the serial killer and the interesting cast of characters sucked me right in.
I really love to get these samplers on NetGalley. When I go into a physical bookstore, I usually pick up the book and read a few pages before buying it to make sure I like the author’s voice. Sometimes I can tell right away if I connect to the book — or if I don’t. The sampler serves the same purpose with books on NetGalley, and saves me the trouble of having to read a book where I pretty immediately know I don’t click with the author’s writing style or the narrator’s voice.
This is the first sampler I’ve gotten through NetGalley that has made me interested in reading ALL the books it contained (excluding the one I had already read - but had I gotten this excerpt before reading it I would have jumped to request that one as well). Also, I really think the generous length of each sample in this volume did a lot to invest me in each story. I wish more publishers would take this cue and provide a sampler with longer previews of fewer books.
Two thumbs up for the Minotaur sampler, and thanks to St. Martin’s for the great preview!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read excerpts of 4 great books in this sampler! This book sampler introduced 4 stories that I am really looking forward to reading and reviewing in their entirety. I hope to get the opportunity to do so!
This sampler introduces novels set to release in early 2021; Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, Every Last Fear, The Lost Village, and Deep into the Dark. All of them look fantastic.
St. Martin’s Press is a publisher of only the very best and this is a clear testament to that standard.
Love mysteries as I do? Don’t miss this thrilling sampler of four upcoming Minotaur novels. I bet you’ll add four more titles to your TBR stack as I have!

Thanks to St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a perfect little sample of a variety of different titles from Minotaur. Comedy, Psychological thrillers, paranormal/horror and crime are all my kind of books! This gives you a perfect sample of what the books are about and definitely keeps you wanting to read more! Definitely pick this up to see all those titles that I know you will want to add to your never ending list.
What could be better than diving into these chilling book samplers by Minotaur is actually getting a real taste of the books you want to read beyond just blurbs or recommendations. I look forward to reading them. Every Last Fear, a true family crime story, Deep int Dark and the rest will probably mean I will lose sleep but thanks to these samplers it will be worth it! Thanks to St. Marin's Press, Minotaur and Net Galley for these !
Since I'm pretty new in NetGalley and doesn't have a 100% success rate in getting approved for By Request ARCs, I grabbed at the chance to read this Minotaur Sampler that features four of its debut and anticipated by mystery, thriller, and suspense fans. Are you not getting enough approval? Try the Minotaur Sampler and take a peek of not one but five of these incredible books! Now, this is what I call a treat! What a better way to receive a little piece of fast-paced, thrilling, and riveting novels than not having the ability to sample them at all because of limited ARC copy or not getting more approval from publishers because you are a newbie here.
Thank you for The Minotaur Sampler for this creative idea and a great benefit to those who haven't had much success on approvals for by-request high-demand books.
The Minotaur Sampler includes the first few chapters of the following must-awaited books expected to be published next year.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano is a contemporary mystery with Finlay Donovan, a suspense author having a hard time making ends meet as a result of a recent divorce from his cheating husband, as the main character. Fast-paced with lots of single mother angst. I read the first five chapters from this sampler. The scheduled publication date is on February 2, 2021.
Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay is a psychological thriller about the mysterious death of every member of the Pines family while on vacation in Mexico. Except for Matt Pines who stayed in NYU at that time, and his older brother, Danny, who is serving life in prison charged for the murder of his girlfriend, were the only survivors. Anticipated to be published on March 2, 2021, the first seven chapters gave me a glimpse of the story told between the past and present and has several POVs. It is a sensational thriller that promises to deliver.
The Lost Village by Camilla Sten is a historical mystery & suspense novel set in 1959. Told alternating between Now and Then has five chapters in the sampler. Alice Lindstedt is a documentary filmmaker fixated on discovering the mysterious disappearance of the residents of The Lost Village. This disturbing thriller's expected release is on March 23, 2021.
Deep Into the Dark by P.J. Tracy, a mystery fiction set in Los Angeles stars LAPD detective Margaret Nolan. Here, you will find seven chapters of fast-paced, captivating, and sometimes funny narrative. The book features two well-developed main characters that are marvelous comic, likable, and spirited. The scheduled publication date is on January 12, 2021.
Thank you once again to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this awesome Minotaur Sampler.

In the sampler there are four fiction novel samples to read. The first one is “Finlay Donovan is killing it.” Finlay is a divorced mother/author who has 2young children. She is tryig to get them ready so she can meet her book agent sooner than later. As she eats lunch with her agent, her agent wants her to finish her current book she’s writing and get started on a new one. Finlay says she would do it for fifteen thousand dollars in advance. As Finlay gets up and says goodby to her agent, she finds a note under her plate. It offers her fifty thousand dollars to do what?
In the second book sampler “Every last fear, you are introduced to a NYU student Matt Pine. He learns that the FBI are looking for him. He returns to his dorm room fo learn that his family is dead. He only has a brother in prison that is alive. His family had gone to Mexica for a vacation. How did they die?
In “The lost village,” Alice wants to do a documentary film about the village where her grandmother lived. Everyone in the village had disappeared. Alice wants to know what happened in that village. Will she find out?
I only have one problem now. I want to read all four books now — I don’t want to wait! They are all well written. The mysteries made me want to know more. They end just at the place in each novel where I realized that I was “hooked” and didn’t want to stop that sample. They all have suggested dates for when these books will be published.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
The Minotaur Sampler: New Books to Make Your Heart Race includes chapter excerpts from four new Minotaur books. Released on 3rd Nov 2020 by Macmillan on their Minotaur imprint, it's 200 pages and available (possibly for a limited time) as a free download in ebook format.
These four books from Minotaur are all top shelf fiction. For anyone (and let's face it, that's almost all of us) who has ever wandered around and browsed in a book store or library to read a few pages of random books and see if we are drawn in, this sampler provides the same experience without being breaking social distancing rules or quarantine. The books all have upcoming release dates from January - March 2021, and it's nice to get a sneak peek before release.
All of the books are very well written - thriller, suspense, and mystery. There are at least 3 of them I'm planning on picking up and reading myself.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I love these NetGalley samplers so much because they give me the opportunity to find new authors and books to read. Plus they help me avoid the ones that aren’t for me. We all know book blurbs can only say so much about a book but it’s actually reading it that lets us know if we connect with the book. Reading the description of this sampler I thought two of these books were possibly of interest to me and after reading I found I wasn’t interested in one but I loved the other. One of these books is so well written that I found myself hooked and I really need to read this book! I’ve never heard of the author before but I was really impressed by the story so I will definitely be checking out her other works. I’ve already requested the book and I really need to know how the rest of it goes! If you’ve never read a sampler before they are perfect for reading on your kindle because each book is listed like a chapter so you can easily navigate between books if one is not for you.
I loved The Minotaur Sampler. This sampler includes a preview of four books - The Lost Village, Every Last Fear, Finley Donovan is Killing it, and Deep Into the Dark.
Finley Donovan is Killing It - this book captivated me from the first sentence. The main character is so relatable and authentic. This preview definitely made me want to read this and I was so excited when I received a gifted copy of this.
Every Last Fear - this book also captivated me from the first line. The premise of this book is fascinating. I definitely would read this book based on the preview.
The Lost Village - this preview did a great job setting the stage for this creepy horror story about an abandoned Swedish village.
Deep Into the Dark - this preview did not sell me on this book. It jumped too much between characters and I had no idea what was going on. Based on the synopsis - it looks very promising.
Overall, I enjoyed getting to read a little bit of each book. I will definitely pick up another Minotaur Sampler.
I really enjoyed reading the four samples. Out of the four books, there are two that I especially enjoyed and have added to my reading list;
The Lost Village is a book that I already had in mind and I loved everything about it. The story is perfect for my tastes - Scandi Crime mixed with a possible paranormal element. I think if I had the whole book to read, I would have stayed up all night to finish it in one sitting! Very excited for this one!
The second book I enjoyed was more of a surprise. Every Last Fear is a book which, from reading the synopsis, I wouldn't have been desperate to read. However, having had the chance to read the first few chapters, I really enjoyed the story. I liked the use of different people's perspectives and the way it switched from past to present day. A story I would be intrigued to finish.
There were 3 books in this sampler I had my eye on and couldn't wait to get a sneak peek of.
The first read was Finlay Donovan is Killing it. The feel of this book made me think of the best of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. 5 stars for this sample
The next was Every Last Fear, a thriller with a 'true crime' angle. I can't wait to read the rest of this book. I think I'm going to love it. 5 stars for this sample.
The last was The Lost Village, a scandi thriller. A bit more slow burning, but has good atmosphere, I will definitely check out the finished book. 4 stars for this sample.
I didn't read the last sample book, as I was not really interested in that title.
I love it when publishing houses put together a little teaser of upcoming book releases. I have found many books I’m interested in that I wouldn’t have necessarily been aware of otherwise.
Minotaur Vol. 1 is a great example. Of the four books highlighted in this sampler, I’ve already requested one of the books from my local library.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It is included in this edition. The sampler includes the first five chapters about an author, post-divorce, that gets caught up in murder investigations. I was hooked by chapter three.
The sampler is a great way to read a little of the book and decide if you are interested, enjoy the content, like the voice and writing style, and want to read more.
What drew me to this sampler was, to be honest, that I already knew I wanted to read one of the books included in it. Additionally, I am always glad to get the chance of discovering new books that fit my reading preferences. All three other books did interest me so I didn't wait long to request it.
I can definitely recommend reading this sampler if the titles sound interesting to you. The samples are long enough to get a feel for the story and the characters. I definitely will add them to my TBR and can't wait for the full published versions!
I will be adding my opinion on each of the books included in the sampler for the individual books on Goodreads, my blog and Instagram as soon as I got a chance to read the published versions! :)
This was a sampler of 4 books, written by 4 women in the mystery/thriller genre. Such a great idea to give readers a taste of each book! While I had already read Every Last Fear (it was excellent!), I am very interested in reading the remaining 3 books in this sampler. The Lost Village is the next on my reading list - the first several chapters were engaging! I ordinarily wouldn't have picked up Finlay Donovan is Killing It because of the cover and the title of the book. However, after reading the first 5 chapters, I'm interested in giving it a go.
Thank you to St Martin's Press, NetGalley and the respective authors for an advance copy of this sampler.
Excellent selection of books! My favorite two being The Lost Village and Finley Donovan is Killing It. I already have and ARC of The Lost Village and I cannot wait to start reading it --has anyone pointed out how eerie the cover looks?! I was also pleasantly surprised by Finlay Donovan; so relatable as a single working mom trying to make ends meet. She gets this crazy offer to earn $50K if she provides an unusual service to a stranger. Considering how bills keep piling up, this fat check might help her get back on track financially and stop being so dependent on her ex. Finlay cracks me up, yet represent a spread contemporary tragedy.
This title provides a generous sampling of four titles that will be coming out soon. For each book, there is a description of the author and the book’s plot. These are followed by several chapters from the books. There is definitely a long enough extract that readers will know if they want to read thenovel in its entirety.
Readers of mystery and suspense, take a look. You may find something to get you through the next few months.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
I love reading a little sample of a book to see if I think I’m going to enjoy it because you can usually tell very early on if you’re going to get hooked on the story or not. The Minotaur Sampler went one step further and offered 5 chapters for each story which was enough to have me heavily invested in the stories when the sample was finished, so well done The Minotaur Sampler, very clever!
Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, Every Last Fear and The Lost Village had such strong starts I definitely need to know how these end!! Deep Into The Dark wasn’t for me, it didn’t suck me in like the others unfortunately.
I loved this sampler and really wanted to read the rest of everything. I started with Findlay Donovan is killing it. It was just the book I needed to give me laughs while still being a mystery/thriller. I don’t want to offer spoilers but Fin is a divorced mother of two who is struggling to stay afloat. Out of mixed communication she is offered a murder for hire job. The cast of characters is varied and well presented that I can see each of them in my mind. A great summer read! Thanks NetGalley for the advance sampler copy
I received this book sampler through NetGalley. I enjoyed reading the various samples provided and have decided to look into two of the stories that peaked my interest. This type of book with multiple books by various authors introduces you to possibles writers that you want to investigate in the future. If you enjoy reading, this is a good book to start with and possibly find someone new to read.
This sampler is a great way to explore new titles and authors. I particularly liked Finlay Donovan is Killing It. I always enjoy a good story with a theme regarding how far people will go when their back is to a wall, and the sample of the book has me eagerly anticipating the rest of the story. It is relatable, raw, fast-paced, and full of suspense, just the type of thriller I enjoy. Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to peruse upcoming novels.
This is a good sampler of excerpts from only four books. I like that there aren't too many books to overwhelm you . There was enough teasers to get me interested in looking further for the rest of the book on several of them.
Thank you Minotaur for putting together four great books to preview. I thoroughly enjoyed all of them and already have them pre purchased or purchased whatever the case may be. I cannot wait to finish reading them and will review them individually when I finish reading them.
All of these are super intriguing but LET ME TELL YOU, I AM LIVING FOR FINLAY DONOVAN. I need the whole book immediately. My other favorite here was Every Last Fear--it's giving me some major Dark Places vibes and I love everything about that (well, love in a sense that I'm also terrified of).
This was a great sampler and I found myself wanting to keep reading each so it did the trick. Only one of these were on my radar before this so I was excited to be able to read a bit of the others. I don’t love only getting partial books but I am glad I read these samples!
