Discover inner strength and wisdom by bringing the power of the equine spirit to life with spells, meditations, and creative visualization.
Along with the bear, horses are a primary creature associated with shamanism and traditions influenced by it. They appear in 25,000-year-old cave paintings, such as those at Lascaux. They find a role in the modern African diaspora traditions such as Haitian Vodou, whose devotees are called “horses” for the spirits who ride them during trances.
The spirit of the horse exists in the subconscious minds of humans and takes shape in various forms, whether as a symbol of fertility in the land, as in Celtic mythology, or as a psychopomp, which leads the dead to the next world. The horse has made its way into the current of our collective unconscious as a universal archetype.
Horse Magick contains spells, rituals, chants, and meditations for many purposes, loosely based around equine imagery. Numerous traditions are represented, as are many deities, including Athena, Epona, and Baba Yaga. No contact with actual horses is required.
Through the use of spells and rituals, readers are able to magickally ride to their chosen destinies and fulfill their desires. Workings involve crystals, candles, and Tarot cards, items easily accessible for most readers.

Full disclosure, I am not a fan of horses. It’s not like I actively hate them, I just don’t have that gushing adoration that so many people have for them. As a little girl, I never went through a “horse phase”. I didn’t even go crazy for unicorns until my late teens/early twenties when I learned more about them. (Specifically, that they could be beautiful killers. The murdering unicorns are the ONLY reason to watch the movie “Cabin in the Woods”.)
So, why on earth did I agree to read “Horse Magick: Spells and Rituals for Self-Empowerment, Protection, and Prosperity” by Lawren Leo with Domenic Leo? Honestly, I could not tell you why. What I can tell you is that I am glad I did!
Each chapter features a horse drawn from a wonderfully curated collection of examples in religion, folklore, and history. After the example you will find a spell or ritual associated with or inspired by the example. The spells are clearly written and well thought out, being sure to list supplies at the start. And, if you’re a nerd like me, the BEST part is at the end of each chapter there is a list of additional resources! I don’t if it was the authors or the publisher who made the decision to do this, but I hope to see more books going forward contain this feature.
Along with the spells and rituals, “Horse Magick” also has a chapter devoted to “Equine Dreams”. This is essentially a horse-based dream dictionary. If you dream of horses in any scenario, you will probably find a meaning for it in there.
Did Lawren and Domenic Leo convert me into a horse lover? No. Did they create a compelling collection of folklore and magic that I basically read straight through in a day because it was so interesting? Yes.
There are many books out there, but perhaps this is just the book you are looking for, ingenious, practical, and simple to understand. It does not seek to sell you something unknown as if it were the latest fashion, rather here the Leo brothers focus on teaching to rediscover, through spells, rituals, chants and meditations, a new perspective of what you already know or want to know, and take it to another level.
The way they cover the symbolism and archetypes is simply delicious, there is no other word to describe it. The rituals are easy and practical to be performed at all times, the chapters are a walk between myths and history that will leave you more than satisfied. Personally I can assure you, that for all those who dedicate ourselves to the most ceremonial and ritual form of magic, this book is a refreshing balm to help you remember that magic is something much simpler than you think and that simplicity and wit are your two weapons of power at the necessary time.
If you have not had a book of Magic & Sorcery before in your hands, this is a good way to start, it is modern, practical, and clear. If you have more experience in this field, this book will make you rethink everything you think you know and It will give a new vision of all this, its reading is essential for every modern wizard or sorcerer.
Chapters 13 & 14 are my favorites in so many ways.

Horse Magick was a good read. Hooray! The farther that I went into the book, the more I recognized horse symbolism in my life. It's a funny phenomenon. The more you focus on something, the more that you see it. I found the chants inspiring. The only thing that I would want changed that I haven't mentioned in my book updates is more of an involvement of energy manipulation and grounding and centering. Seek horse spirit with reverence, knowledge, and awe.
I just finished reading this amazing book, a surprise gift charged with memories from Lawren and Domenic Leo, when I was helping at New Moon Books. I miss these guys so much I felt close to them while reading their book, and let me tell you it's amazing!
As someone who works with power animals and their energies in therapies, Horse Magick was a wonderful reading. It explores the cultural, social and spiritual meaning of horses from different myths, legends, histories, and folklore from around the world. Just wow. With the academic side done by Domenic and the spells craft by Lawren, it has a balanced and attractive approach on the topic, which also appeals to me as a young academic. You get a clear idea of why the spells were crafted that way, why using this or that material, and how to perform it for the best results.
We need more books like this one. Academics and witches will love it, but if you are both them it is a MUST have.
