Now and Then and Always

2020 Christy Award Winner and HOLT Medallion Finalist

"It was just a house. Just a weathered old house in a hidden grove, shuttered and still . . . "

Last year, after traumatic circumstances forced her from her job as a nanny, Mara Bristol finally found a place to belong-the winsome Everwood Bed & Breakfast at the edge of Maple Valley, Iowa. For months, she's helped its owner, Lenora, maintain the ramshackle property despite their shortage of guests. But when Lenora fails to return from a month-long trip and the bank threatens foreclosure, Mara worries she's once again alone . . . abandoned . . . about to lose the only true home she's ever known.

Detective Marshall Hawkins is no closer to whole today than he was two years ago . . . the day his daughter died. Between his divorce, debilitating migraines, and a dependence on medication, his life is falling apart. And when a reckless decision on the job propels him into administrative leave, he has no other plan but to get in his truck and drive. A one-night stay at the Everwood was supposed to be just that. But there's something about the old house-or maybe its intriguing caretaker-that pulls him in.

Together, Mara and Marshall set out to save the Everwood. But its secrets run deeper than they could've imagined. As they renovate the house and search for its missing owner, they'll each confront the pain that brought them to the Everwood in the first place . . . and just maybe discover a faith and love to help them carry on.

Melissa Tagg gets better with every book. I’m always expecting a good read when I pick up one of her books, but each time I fall in love with the story. Now and Then and Always is a book full of charm, heart, and real life.

Maple Valley is one of my favorite settings – it’s such a quirky place, but still feels like it could be entirely real. I enjoyed that the view of Maple Valley in this story was a bit of an outsider’s perspective. Mara is not originally from there, and she is more about hiding herself away rather than ingraining herself within the town. Also, a rundown bed and breakfast – full of mystery and history – how delightful!

Mara’s past is a sad one indeed, but Marshall, oh how his backstory broke my heart. I’m not sure how she does it, but Tagg manages to take a heavy topic and pull hope from it, all the while respectfully handling the emotions and grief that come along with it.

In the romance genre, I tend to feel that relationships move too fast, but I never feel that way with Tagg’s stories. Even if a friendship develops quickly, the next steps are not taken lightly and never to the detriment of the plot or character development. It just feels more true-to-life and makes the payoff so much better at the end.

As ever, the secondary characters are endearing, and I just know they have stories of their own. I adore how the readers gets bit and pieces of their stories – it always makes me wonder if one of them will be getting their own book next.

I loved this poignant story of healing, and I am so glad that Tagg isn’t leaving Maple Valley just yet. I am absolutely looking forward to the next book in the series. This book is a favorite of 2019 for sure.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. This review is my honest opinion.

Melissa Tagg is so awesome. She’s so deep, and thought-provoking, and can find symbolism in just about anything. Then there is her writing. Man, I want to be this woman when I grow up. This book toed the line to more women’s fiction than straight up romance and that’s fine by me because I like them both. A character-driven book with depth and warmth and if you don’t fall in love with Marshal then I’m coming over to check your pulse.

A return to Maple Valley always makes me happy. There’s just something about the people and the atmosphere that makes me happy to open the pages of a Tagg book and settle down for a good read. And Now and Then and Always was no exception. One of my favorite Melissa Tagg books, hands down.

There is such depth to this book! Sure there are the signature laughs hat Ms. Tagg always brings forth. I mean I’m all for the humor around sugary cereal (read the book, you’ll get it). But there was just an underlying tone of heartache and the need for healing that immediately pulled me into the story.

I do love a tragic hero after all. And “Marshall Hawkins, 35, Milwaukee” may be one of my favorite tragic heroes of all. Not because of the heartache that shadows his eyes, but the way he wakes up each day, putting one foot in front of the other with no notion of how powerful those simple things truly are. He has so much hurt bottled in him and watching him fight for healing was one that kept me turning the pages.

I would totally be Mara’s friend and bond over cereal, a fabulous den, and a B&B that welcomes all in need of a family. Not to mention cameo appearances from Walkers and others who make Maple Valley home. Make sure you pick this one up and settle in for a read guaranteed to touch your heart.

This was so delightful! I don't know why I waited so long to read this. It could be because I have too many books on my Kindle reader. Now and Then and Always warmed my heart so much, it was filled with so much hope. I liked the element of mystery mixed in with romance (of course) and more of Maple Valley. This is definitely a book for the favourites shelf...

I am ridiculously happy right now. Y'all. More Maple Valley? You know I'm down for that.

Before I even started this, I knew I would love it. And I was not wrong. I have not had anywhere near as much time as I'd like to read lately, but I finished this within less than 48 hours, and I have no regrets.

Tagg's characters are always so unique, with compelling backstories, fun quirks, epic banter, and more, and Mara and Marshall were no different! From the prologue, I fell in love with Marshall. He may have made me cry a couple--okay, several--times. Can I just give the poor guy a hug, please? And Mara . . . wow, I can relate to her a lot! Both these characters are just so fabulous, and I completely love them.

The storyline moves along at a pretty good pace, although not too quickly. There was never a time I was bored or uninterested. Tagg deals with topics like abandonment, grief, and others in an incredibly realistic and moving way, and, as I mentioned, I was brought to tears more than once. The author always weaves in a storyline of mystery that was incredibly intriguing, and I don't think she has done that before. But I definitely hope she does it again!

Just a couple of quick notes:

All in all, I am in love with this book and these characters. I cannot wait for book 2! I am hoping for a Jen + Lucas story (have been since Keep Holding On!) or a book about Sam . . . or both. If you are a lover of romance with deep themes and epic banter, plus a bit of mystery, I highly suggest you check out Now and Then and Always!

I've been so anxious to read this book! Melissa Tagg is one of those consistently good authors that keep me coming back for more. And this cover! It is an awesome representation of significant part of this story. I love the colors too.

This story is about two people, both broken from tragic and traumatic things in their lives, but still fighting to move forward. Mara and Marshall are both characters that you root for, even in their darkest moments. I was invested in their stories and in their ultimate peace and happiness. As a reader, that is what I long for. That emotional connection to the characters.

I loved the added bits of mystery/intrigue and the tiny bits of suspense. It gave the story some added elemental life to balance out the emotional build up. Everything unfolded brilliantly and kept me turning those pages because I just couldn't stop. It was so good!

The secondary characters have me so interested! I can't wait to see what is coming next!

Content: mild peril, kissing, Christian elements (praying, forgiving, finding your way back to God)

It is entirely possible that I met my first book boyfriend ever!! Marshall Hawkins *sigh*

Melissa Tagg is one of those writers who has a way with words that just sweeps me right into the story and leaves me not wanting to leave. Ever. Once again, she brings readers back to Maple Valley and into the lives of Mara Bristol and Detective Marshall Hawkins. This unlikely duo, both with traumatic pasts, find solace in each other and the aged B&B they're trying to restore. This story has it all. Characters who instantly found a place in my heart, a plot that had mysterious twists and turns, and a beautiful theme whispered delicately within the pages.

Ms. Tagg will always be a favorite of mine and reading a story like this reminds me why. Simply amazing. A top 2019 read for sure!!

Now and Then and Always is the first book in Tagg's Maple Valley series and I loved it! The story captured my attention, I didn't want to stop reading, and I cared so much about the characters' journey.

I loved how the characters weren't perfect and had to overcome some challenges in the story. It was also awesome how the story kept me guessing regarding certain things and the ending was fantastic.

All in all, Now and Then and Always was amazing and I recommend it to fans of contemporary romance. I need to read the next book as soon as it releases! :D

Finished Now and Then and Always today and was amazed. My first time reading Melissa Tagg. A book about love and loss. Marshal suspended from his job takes a road trip and ends up with Mara. Mara needed help with a house that was left for her lets Marshal help with the renovations. Marshal had loss her daughter 2 years before, can Marshal and Mara find love again? I love Mara and Marshal. Both has suffered great lost. Mara her family and Marshal his daughter and marriage. When Marshal helps with the house both take interest in each other, which is so fun to watch. Both trying not to find love and that is what they are finding. Their friend are great. A group of misfits all suffered loss in one way or another. I love watching both Marshal and Mara come through their loss, starting to rely on each other. It will have you wondering, can they find love with each other. In this story there is a mystery. The house Mara is fixing up belongs to an order women, which goes missing. Trying to find her and why she went missing is very interesting. I love mysteries but I have to say I love the love story between Marshal and Mara so much more. Now I am on book 2, Some Bright Someday. I can't wait to dive in. Anyone looking for a new author and a great book, I highly recommend this book!!

Man, was this ever GOOD

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! Except for one little dramatic scene, this was what my reading palate DESPERATELY needed. Sweetness, authenticity, real struggles, ahhhh. I needed a break from the drama overkill I’ve been consuming in fiction, and this was IT. I don’t know why I haven’t read more Melissa Tagg than I have! Will definitely be reading more by her!

What an emotionally gripping tale this was! Mara and Marshall were compelling characters and I loved the connection that grew between them as they tackled the renovation of the Everwood Bed and Breakfast.

These two characters had riveting backstories. Mara battled feelings of abandonment and inadequacy, while Marshall struggled with what felt like never ending grief and pain from the loss of his little girl. I loved the glimpses of Marshall, the fun loving and caring man, that began to emerge during his stay in Maple Valley.

The romance was beautiful and heart tugging. It was clear that Mara and Marshall should be together. Their hearts knew it, yet Marshall especially had a lot to overcome. There was also an intriguing mystery that wove its way through the pages.

This was a beautiful story and I look forward to reading more books in this series.

" . . when I was in my deepest pain, God came for me. He didn't leave me in an injured pile on the sidewalk nor did he stand around waiting for me to get up . . . . . He came running for me."

When Mara Bristol's journey to nowhere landed her on the steps of the Everwood Bed and Breakfast, she slowly and cautiously began to believe that her heart had found a place to call home. Now she's not so sure, the owner has disappeared and the repairs on the once fine estate are beginning to take their toll. Upon learning of the property's fragile financial standing, Mara begins to panic. . . . until one stormy night, an unlikely hero in the form of Marshall Hawkins, literally crashes through the inn's front door.

Detective Marshall Hawkins has been placed on a three month leave of absence from his job; his erratic behavior and mounting professional errors left his superior with no other choice. Still reeling from family tragedy, Marshall packs his bags and begins to drive; never expecting to find a place or a person who longs to become his "now and then and always".

Melissa Tagg's writing style is so enjoyable to read; full of subtle and not-so-subtle humor, strategic words of wisdom, magnetic attractions and in this case, an intriguing family mystery. But perhaps it's her strong themes of restoration that her readers value the most, for in this story it's God who finds a way to whisper, "there's life beyond the brokenness".

You know there’s something missing in your life when you’re not reading a Melissa Tagg story. Somehow she pulls it all together, every element - and the book is complete.

Last year while passing through Iowa, we drove through a small town and immediately my mind said “Maple Valley, this is it”. Yes it may be a fictional place - but it’s nestled deep into the hearts of everyone who’ve read the Walker Family Series & her 3 Christmas novellas rolled into one - “Enchanted”. A sense of home and belonging awaits everyone who comes here, and the same is true for Mara. She’s lived a life of loneliness, heartbreak and sometimes fear. She arrived at the Everwood B&B, unsure of her purpose in life - but what she finds will fill her with hope and peace.

Marshall Hawkins has suffered the biggest loss of his life. There is no going forward, or backward. Trapped in the torment of his present he is forced to take a leave of absence from his job as a Detective for the Milwaukee PD. Unsure of what to do or where to go he starts driving and somehow finds himself outside the Everwood.

This book is a beautiful, tender and full of hope. The inspirational insights lift and edify the soul. The mystery surrounding Lenora was a perfect addition, adding another layer of depth to an already incredible plot.

Thank you so much for a wonderful uplifting read, and a return to Maple Valley that we’ve all been longing for.

I received a complimentary copy. This is my honest review.

Now and Then and Always ( Maple Valley #1 )
By: Melissa Tagg
Now and Then and Always is book one in a brand new series by Melissa Tagg. Ms. Tagg carries us back to Maple Valley where there are memories. I was hooked right at the start and could not put it down. The story is well written and the characters are realistic and well developed. This is Mara and Marshall story. Both are dealing with some hurt in their past. Mara is a former Nanny who was forced from her job and is now trying to take care of a run down Bed & Breakfast. Marshall is a Detective who is on leave and trying to get his life back on track after the loss of his daughter. There were times I was laughing and other times I was crying , and I mean crying with tears flowing down my face. I love these two character and Marshall was my hero. There is abandonment , grief, hurt, healing ,forgiveness, and romance in this wonderful story. I also loved the spiritual parts running through the story.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive story. All opinions are my own.

"Far be it from me to speak for the Almighty, but I feel fairly confident saying God isn't looking for impressive people. He's looking for people who are willing to be impressed by Him." (p 132)

Well, now, this is one of those 'this book is so good I can't find the right words to tell you how good it is" reviews. I'm flummoxed, confounded, disconcerted and clearly consumed by redundancy. :-) In other words, Melissa Tagg has left me addle-pated.

Or maybe that was Marshall. Because, seriously, if he does not sweep you off your feet and jump start your heart then...well, you don't have one! It's tricky to write a wounded hero with the right combination of realistic grit and toe-curling warmth, but Tagg has created a broody hero worthy of Olympic size swoons. He's broken. And messed up. And cut off from God. Hurting and angry and balancing on the edge of something much darker. But all of that cannot completely bury the decent, honest, compassionate man at his core.

And then Everwood happens. An antiquated mansion that has a personality all of its own. Welcoming in all its decaying beauty. Harboring secrets that it won't give up readily. Sheltering lost souls. Promising better futures. This house is a third main character and I love that!

Mara has been hiding out at Everwood for nearly a year. She's as captivated by the mansion as I am! Her reasons for going underground are hers to share and, if you're patient, she'll reveal all in her own time. Marshall's intrigued. And suspicious. His detective spidey senses are tingling...but so is his heart. There is such emotional depth to this romance! An angst-riddled path leads to their HEA, though, complete with mystery and danger! That was a fun twist. It doesn't overtake the relationship building and the soul-searching but it adds an intriguing undercurrent that amped up my reading enjoyment that much more.

"And I started thinking, what if that's like God? What if when we've fallen, when we're hurt, when we're in our greatest pain, He runs towards us?...What if it's not about me pulling myself together and getting up, but just...looking up? To see Him. Running to me." (p 306)

Melissa Tagg's books just keep getting better and better. Set in the same quirky town as the Walker Family and Enchanted Christmas series, this has all the charm and heart of her other Maple Valley stories, but it has a mystery and touch of suspense to boot.

Like all the other Maple Valley stories, there's humor and quirkiness, but it's the emotional impact that gets me every time. My heart ached for both Marshall and Mara, for all that they have such different backgrounds. It was hard not to tear up just about any time Marshall's daughter was mentioned . . . or Mara's absolute aloneness and feelings of abandonment. But even if the grief will always be with them, there's so much hope, healing, and restoration. I like how another reviewer put it--"there's life beyond the brokenness."

If you want a story to tug at the heartstrings and romance to make you swoon, then look no further. Highly recommended.

Sooooo GOOD!!

I really loved the Walker Family series and now I can tell I am going to adore the Maple Valley series especially since I get to see the Walkers in them too :) This book just captured my attention and was so hard to put down when I absolutely had to do mom and wife stuff! I really loved Marshall (hero). He had been through so much emotional pain and seeing him evolve and get closer to God and grow to love sweet Mara (heroine). Mara and Marshall were an unlikely couple, but in the end they were perfect for each other. There is romance, mystery, heart ache and great friendships in this book. A beautiful story I will long remember! Highly recommend!!

A new novel from Melissa Tagg is always cause for rejoicing, but a new novel from Melissa Tagg with a little mystery thrown in? Well, whatever’s a step up from rejoicing, that’s what’s called for here. I absolutely adored this story, and I’m so glad we’re going to be hanging around Maple Valley for the next little while, because it’s one of my favourite fictional settings. There’s such a down-to-earth sense of community, and it’s only growing with the friendships that develop during this story.

Melissa Tagg is also a master at taking broken characters and putting them on a path to restoration that’s filled with warmth and gentle humour. She doesn’t just write the best meet-cutes; she manages to sprinkle completely natural moment-cutes at random intervals throughout her stories, inspired by men in pink bathrobes, sugary breakfast cereals, and anything in between. And the dialogue between her characters is just delightful. You can’t help smiling.

But what really puts Melissa Tagg up there with my all-time favourite contemporary romance authors is the heart that goes into her stories. Mara and Marshall are a little bit broken and a little bit lost, and all the moment-cutes in the world can’t fix that. It means being forced to confront pain, wrestle with broken dreams, and risk becoming vulnerable in a completely different way. It’s the way Mara and Marshall did this in between restoring the Everwood, trying to find their missing land-lady, and making us smile at their blossoming friendship (and those darn adorable moment-cutes) that gave this book that signature Melissa-Tagg brand of warmth that totally satisfies.

If you love contemporary romance and you haven’t discovered Melissa Tagg yet, don’t wait another second!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

'It was a whisper. A prodding. A conviction. In another life, in hi sold one where he was a man of deep faith, he might've believed that was a divine murmur. God's voice. Saying his name. Letting him know someone saw and heard and cared.'

Melissa Tagg takes us back to Maple Valley in this first novel in a new series. How I love that town! There are but a few fictional places I would like to visit or even live, and Maple Valley is one.

Mara Bristol has ran from a devastating experience and was taken in by Lenora, who bought the old Everwood Bed and Breakfast, with the intent of fixing it up completely. But now, Lenora has left and five weeks have passed with no sign of her. Mara is still taking care of the B&B when one night a stranger passes out on her porch in the midst of a terrific storm.

Detective Marshall Hawkins has been given three months' of administrative leave because of his erratic job performance. Marshall has lost his 6 year old daughter to leukemia and cannot seem to get past his grief, not even two years later. It rules his life. So he gets in his truck and drives and ends up at the Everwood, head throbbing with a migraine and a storm brewing. For some reason, he feels he should stay and help Mara fix up the place and turn it into a thriving bed and breakfast.

As these two begin to work together, both experience something wonderful as their burdens seem to be shifting . Marshall is broken, oh so broken, and Mara, too, is broken and we are allowed the blessing of seeing them both journey into healing. There is even a mystery, at which Tagg proves herself a dab hand in creating.

Every time I read a Melissa Tagg book, I completely bury myself in it and hate to come up for necessary tasks. She causes her readers to simply fall in love with all her wonderful characters in this precious town. I want to go to Maple Valley so badly! She does add her trademark thread of humor throughout also, along with a powerful spiritual theme. I smiled, I laughed, I shed tears as Tagg once again proved her writing is classic inspirational romance, fit for the keeper shelf and destined to be read again and again. Well done!

One of Tagg’s best books to date. There’s something truly special here in Now and Then and Always. I laughed, I cried. I grieved with Marshall and fretted with Mara. Such a beautiful story with Tagg’s remarkable ability to paint the picture and develop the characters with care, compassion, and depth.

Tidbits of action and mystery add yet another layer to this rich tale of two broken spirits rehabilitating an old B&B as God does similar work in each of them.

Ah, Marshall and Mara! It's been a while since Melissa Tagg's last release, but Now and Then and Always was definitely worth the wait!

At the beginning of the book, both Marshall and Mara are at varying stages of brokenness (though aren't we all?), and their time at the Everwood leads to healing and restoration. I enjoyed their romance (the "meet cute" was especially fun), but, more than that, I loved their friend group. Mara lived at the Everwood for months before getting to know anyone from Maple Valley—but after the B & B's owner Lenora disappears, she has to venture into town to see what she can do to save the Everwood ... and that's when she gets to know Jenessa, Lucas, and Sam. Eventually, Marshall gets swept into their group, too, and I just loved these friends who became family.

There's also a mystery in the pages of this story: what happened to Lenora, and why did her parents flee the Everwood when she was a child? I figured out none of the answers, but I sure had fun guessing (and I'm glad things weren't quite as sinister as I'd feared).

I loved reading Marshall & Mara's story ... now I hope that Jenessa & Lucas's story comes next!

Melissa Tagg creates characters that are multi-dimensional and will steal your heart. I wasn't too keen on Mara in the beginning, but her personality grew on me. Marshall was in a world of hurt that he couldn't get out of until he came to the Everwood and met Mara. Their relationship and all the mysteries and suspense aspects of this story made it a page turner. Tagg weaves a faith journey into each character's life flawlessly. An excellent tug-on-your-heart romance.

Wow, another one that I didn't review! I loved this story. It's the first I'd read by Melissa Tagg and I thought it was very good.

Two people who's lives have been damaged are trying to keep a damaged bed and breakfast going, but with the owner missing they are having a hard time keeping things going.

There's a bit of mystery and a bit of romance and it's all wrap up in a clean story.

If you have read any of Melissa Tagg’s book series, you are already familiar with Maple Valley. If you haven’t, prepare to fall in love with this quiet, quirky town and its welcoming community. Though Now and Then and Always doesn’t give you quite as much “town time” as her other books, you’re going to love this book so much that you’ll immediately want to read everything she’s written. I have read them all, and if it’s possible to pick a favorite, this one may be it.

I love that Now and Then and Always has a bit of mystery to it…like a cozy Nancy Drew but with romance and heartbreak and…okay, not much like a Nancy Drew book. When you read it, you’ll see exactly what I mean! So, the mystery sets Now and Then and Always apart from Melissa Tagg’s other series which are mainly inspirational romance with lots of humor and heart.

Now and Then and Always instantly draws you in to the story. You know straight off that these characters are going to become part of your world for the next several hours, days, weeks, months. And when you reach the end, you’ll miss them. You’ll want the next book like now! That’s how I felt and still feel. Sometimes, no matter how many books you read, there are always characters who just stick with you. I think you’ll find that Marshall Hawkins is one of those characters.

As a mother, the worst thing that could happen to me would be losing one of my kids. I lost my husband 5 1/2 years ago, and as hard as that was, time helps ease the pain. I can’t imagine ever not feeling pain if I experienced loss like Marshall’s. I’m sure I’d turn to mind numbing pain killers/sleep aids…whatever would block out the pain.

But then there’s Penny, Marshall’s ex-wife. Her character, flawed yet forgiven, is a blaring reminder of God’s love that gets us through the storm. Though this is a work of fiction, I know parents who have lost children, yet their steadfast faith in God gets them through. But God’s not pushy. He’s not going to force you to cling to him when the winds of your storm are so strong that you just want to let go. He will wait for you to come to Him.

I could go on and on, but you just need to read Now and Then and Always by Melissa Tagg. You’ll enjoy the book thoroughly just for the story alone. But the deeper message is in there. Read it. Find your own favorite characters. And savor the nuggets of wisdom.
