~3.5~

The first part of the book was perfection: witty dialogue, UST, English countryside setting, hurt/comfort, great secondary characters (Silas & Oz!), a cute baby named Cora, and a feisty cat.

I love dual POV narratives, and both Niall and Milo are lovable MCs: Milo with his subdued sass and sarcastic remarks, and Niall, protective and commanding, but never controlling.

Milo fears that a relationship with an intense, possessive guy will make him feel small. His ex belittled and mocked him relentlessly. But Niall is nothing like Milo's nasty ex Thomas.

Niall is real and is starting to have (inconvenient but delicious) feelings for his best friend's little brother.

All was well, wonderful even, until Gideon, said best friend and older brother, arrived. But Gideon doesn't come alone. Oh no. He brings a spoiled hussy with him, expecting that Niall will want a threesome as usual.

Why, why, WHY did Lily Morton have to go here? I just went off on a big rant about siblings sleeping with each other's exes in a review for another book. I despise that trope, and it got really weird here.

Gideon gets jealous and goads Milo about Niall's big cock and how good Niall is in bed. WTF? Raise your hand if you think trying to compare notes on a mutual lover with your sibling is disgusting. *RAISES HAND FRANTICALLY*

Supposedly, Gideon was just doing this to make Milo see that he had deeper feelings for Niall, but the whole thing was super skeevy.

Plus, random secondary characters are introduced (the hussy, her sister, the sister's husband, some random guy named Sam) for no apparent reason. All the chapters set at Niall's villa/chateau seemed random and entirely unnecessary to me.

Had it not been for the Gideon situation and all the drama surrounding it, I would have given this book 5 stars. Even if Gideon and Niall being lovers had been mentioned but not so present on page (with various references to their sexual exploits), I could have let it go. Gideon and Niall could easily have been just close platonic friends or fuck buddies in their youth, but having sex with one brother and then fucking the other brother a few weeks later is a hard NO for me.

As much as it pains me because I typically ADORE Lily Morton's work, and despite the lovely HEA/epilogue & smoldering sex, I'm going with 3.5 stars.

After reading "Oz", I was beginning to fall in love with Milo, so when I heard that he was getting his own book, I knew I'd have to read it ASAP and I'm glad that I did.

This story was funny, but since Milo's personality was more subdued, the humor in his story was much more subtle and low-key and less of a punch to the funny bone.

In the prologue, the book began with Milo in a bad relationship with a beautiful, but abusive and belittling artist. A man who never let an opportunity pass to bend Milo to his own will and chip away at Milo's already-low self-esteem.

Then Niall swooped in and rescued Milo from that cruel, undeserved fate, whisking him away to Silas' estate, far from London, giving Milo both time and support as he licked his wounds and began to heal.

The main drama in this story arose from Niall skirting the fine line between protecting Milo and allowing him to find the strength to fight his own battles, which was a bit challenging to watch, since I also felt as though I wanted to shelter Milo from those situations, too.

But as time went by, thanks to the care shown by Niall, Silas and Oz, Milo was able to learn to stand up for himself and wage his own wars, big and small.

I adored how everyone, apart from Milo and Niall, saw how perfect the two men were for one another, subtly and sometimes not-so-subtly pushing them together.

Then when they finally got together physically, after a week of new-found closeness while babysitting Silas and Oz's baby girl, wow, these two burned up the sheets. The steam was really on point, without becoming (*cough-coming-cough*) so frequent that I felt a need to bathe in Purel.

Much like the steam, the feelings developed on page slowly, so they felt believable, but also inevitable, never forced or manufactured.

The one thing that may squick some readers out is the fact that Niall had been in a very casual friends-with-benefits sexual situation with his best friend for over a decade.

And yup, that best friend was none other than Milo's emotionally-distant, older brother, Gideon. Talk about some big ole' sloppy seconds, folks!

#YIKES #KeepItInTheFamily

(But, full disclosure, Niall's previous relationship with Gideon didn't really bother me, because it really was *just* sex, not feelings.)

Some of my favorite parts of the story, other than the always-funny BFF moments between Milo and Oz, were Milo and Niall's verbal take-downs of the asshole ex, Thomas, and the busybody homophobe in the village, Brunhild. I love seeing a bitch put in their place, and those scenes did not disappoint.

When feelings were finally shared, but a possible separation loomed, I loved, loved, LOVED that Milo finally had a long-overdue epiphany as to what he truly needed, and wanted more than anything else for his life to feel complete.

The story ended with an epilogue from three years down the road, which may or may not have been a wee bit sappy for my tastes, but whatever. I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and there wasn't much that I would've changed.

I'd rate this story at around 4.25 stars and I can't wait to read Gideon's book.

Just being with him feels like home should always do.

I get ridiculously excited when I see Lily Morton has a new book coming out. I've been dying to get my hands on Milo,so to speak, and it didn't disappoint. This is turning out to be a delightful series set in the beautiful county of Cornwall. This Author creates some fantastic couples that you can't help fall in love with.

Milo has always been a bit over shadowed by his older brother Gideon who is much more confident and out going than Milo. When he was younger he followed him and his best friend,Niall around like a puppy and had a hopeless crush on Niall.

Milo finds himself trapped in a highly dysfunctional relationship when Niall swoops in and rescues him taking him home to Cornwall to lick his wounds, get his life back on track and hopefully learn to trust someone again. He had no idea that person might be his childhood crush.....he's tried to deny his feelings for Niall.....but for how long.

For his part, Niall just saw Milo as his best friends younger brother but things are about to get complicated. He's always been protective of Milo but is it just concern or something more that's been there all along?

Milo might appear to be a bit broken but underneath there's a quiet determination about him.The last thing he needs is another man like his ex....bossy and controlling and he's terrified of not being enough for someone.Niall recognizes that Milo has to make his own decisions and is so patient and caring with him I'm sure I had a few tears threatening.

These two are super cute together ( I adored the time they were looking after Cora....who,by the way might just be a baby but was an invaluable part in the story).Along with the cuteness and great banter this is also extremely hot.

AND THE EPILOGUE....

Lily Morton is one of the absolute best Authors at this.Tears might have threatened before but they were definitely present here.I absolutely love this delightful world she has created here....you know when you read a book and the characters feel so real, like friends, like people you would enjoy being around?

Highly Recommended.

I am a great fan of Lily Morton and so far I have loved everything I've read by her. This one is no exception. That said, this book does deal with something that I find hard to read about, which is why I just couldn't give it a 5-star rating, even if the writing was superb.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor big thumbs up gif

Milo was a real sweetheart, just like I knew he would be. His life hasn't been the easiest... Being in an abusive relationship has made him very shy and timid...even though that's not his real personality. Thankfully he was saved by Niall, his brother's best friend and the man he's had a huge crush on when he was younger. After spending some awesome times with his new buddy Oz...his sparkling personality slowly starts to comes back though....but then so does his crush...

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor crush on you gif

I think Milo and Niall were both absolutely wonderful. I loved seeing Milo slowly get more and more confident. His friendship with Oz was one of the best parts of the book... boy do I love that snarky little man !!

But even though the developing relationship between Milo and Niall was awesome...I had a bit of an issue with the relationship between Niall and Milo's brother Gideon. You see, this is a "brother's best friend" trope...but... these supposed best friends are so much more than "just friends". Niall and Gideon have been getting down and dirty for some time. Now I am best friends with my sister and I just can't imagine something like this happening... I had a hard time getting my head around it... I try not to judge though, but it's not always easy :P

What made my feelings even more of a confused mess, was the fact that I actually felt sorry for Gideon. He seemed so lonely... So the only hope I have is for Lily to give him his own man and a very awesome HEA. Please Lily Morton, make it happen !!! I am not below begging :P

Gerelateerde afbeelding

Gideon aside, these two were extremely hot and sweet together. They should have been together a long time ago...but I think Milo still had some growing up to do, and I don't mean physically. The ending gave me all the nice and warm fuzzy feelings, like I usually get when I read a book from this author.

I can't wait to see what's in store for us next (please be Gideon !!).

I highly recommend this series, so for those of you who haven't read Oz's awesome book yet...what are you waiting for ??

It probably is me and not the book. 🙂 And I’m just going to hang my head in shame because everyone and their mothers seemed to love this book. 😩 Not the case with me though. 😩 While I love Lily Morton brand of snark and this is a somewhat enjoyable book, there was something just lacking in the story for me. Comparing with the absolute glory of the book 1, “Oz”, I just don’t get that fluttering and swoon-worthy romance and deliciously witty and sharp snark and humor. The relationship between Milo and Niall dragged on and on without actually reaching anywhere for quite a while. And after a while, I got bored. 🤷‍♀️ The book picked up again when it’s about to end but it was a real struggle in the middle so I just don’t know what or where it went wrong. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series though.

Each time I think I've found my favourite pair of Lily Morton characters she puts out another book and wham, there I go again with a new one.

I loved Dylan and Gabe, then I fell for Asa and Jude, before Henry and Ivo stole my heart, only to give up their spot to Silas and Oz.

But now, let's just say Milo and Niall took my heart, wrapped it up in bubble wrap and very carefully squished it in tight to their amazing characters.

It's difficult to summarise why I love Lily Morton's world so much. Is it because they're so very British, the settings familiar to me, the language and jokes those of my own childhood and teenage years?

Is it because she has an incredible way of throwing you right into the heart of her books because of the incredibly visual nature of her narratives?

Or is it the snark and the witty retorts which always stop the romances from becoming too twee?

I have no idea. I just know they settle deep into my soul and bring me joy. Nothing would make me happier than spending an evening with this bunch of inter connected characters drinking good beer and eating cockles on the Cornish seafront.

With Niall and Milo, Lily gives us a slightly different take on the brother's best friend trope and I was only one page into this book when I wanted to kill someone.

Milo is a joy, but he's been pushed deep inside himself and it takes the solid presence and support of Niall to give him the space to breathe again.

Niall doesn't take over, much as his strength and forceful personality would like to, instead he cajoles and encourages and reminds Milo of what he can do.

Milo might be a sweetheart, but Niall was just my cup of tea, right down to the ribbing of Oz and the firm friendships with Silas and Milo's enigmatic brother Gideon.

Speaking of which, I'm saddened to hear he won't be getting his own rare breeds farmer (you promised me him some time now Lily so I'll let you off 😉 ) but I absolutely cannot wait to meet the special someone who is going to see behind that brash shiny exterior to the true gold beneath.

This book is gorgeous, it's stupendously hot of course, but it's about so much more than the sex. It's about family, finding a home, and a psychopathic cat who might just love you after all.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Lily, Lily, Lily: you did it again. You have crafted another book filled with characters I fell in love with and a romance that made me swoon.

I have been waiting for Milo and Niall since Oz, and it didn't disappoint.

Milo has had a crush on Niall since he was a young kid. Niall was always around since he's Milo's older brother Gideon's best friend. Milo knows that Niall will always see him as a younger sibling especially after Niall saved him from an abusive relationship. Fast forward five years and feelings begin to change...

What I loved:

-Banter. Banter is part of Lily Morton's brand, and she has delivered it wonderfully again.

-Milo and Niall loved them to bits as individuals and as a couple.

-Relationship development was well paced.

-Dual POVs.

-There wasn't any contrived drama. These men loved and respected each other, they communicated and wanted the best for one another.

-Hurt/Comfort/Healing

-Chemistry was smokin'!

-It was nice catching up with Oz, Silas, and baby Cora.

-And the epilogue was heart melting. ♥

I love this little family of friends Lily Morton has created in Cornwall. I feel as if I'm there and I know these people while I'm reading, and I can't wait to go back to while waiting for the next installment.

This story was lovely.

5 Stars. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Bring on Gideon!🙌

When it comes to Morton, I find myself somewhat of a broken record. I gush and squee and blather on but I just can’t help it. Because…every time it’s true. I think I have a favorite or perhaps she’s outdone herself only to be proven wrong again and again. I absolutely adored Oz. I still do. And yet, I am just as smitten with Milo. This new series has me held with bated breath, desperately awaiting more. There is no other way around it, I’m addicted. As soon as one of Lily’s creations lands in my lap, euphoria engulfs me. My fingers twitch and I can’t pace myself for anything. I dive in and long for time to slow. Have you felt this way about books before? Gahhh! Such a glorious feeling. I love it. I hope you have the chance to share my joy. Although this is declared a stand-alone, I might argue that fact. It stands on its own without a doubt but the heavenly madness of book one shouldn’t be missed. Do yourself a favor and start with Oz. Just know that you should immediately forge ahead to Milo. His story is tragically beautiful and should be consumed directly after the merry tornado of Oz.

What's to like: I’m going to start with this part because it may cause mixed feelings…Milo’s older brother Gideon and a time when things were dark in Milo’s life. Milo’s story starts with a peek at where he was before we meet him in Oz. It was dreadful and my heart split for him. Those first few pages are hard to read. Gideon calls upon Niall to do him a favor. He knows something is wrong, but can’t help due to geographical issues. So he asks the one person that he trusts with his whole heart, his best friend Niall. Niall swoops in and helps Milo reclaim his life. Milo has always held a torch for Niall and despises the fact that Niall has seen his darkest secrets. He’s also acutely aware that his brother and Niall share everything, including their bodies. *cringe* Yeah, that’s a bitter pill to swallow. But what is important to understand is that while Niall and Gideon have enjoyed many carnal pleasures together, the love they share is still platonic. At least for Niall that is. Niall has a free spirit and lives his life to the fullest. He’s never found a reason to settle, plant his feet or give his heart away until…until one day his gaze clears and he sees Milo in a new light. But it won’t be an easily won battle; choices must be made and changes need to happen. We witness the shift and transformation and it’s simply beautiful.

What's to love: Milo. Niall. Nilo! And their stunning love. Morton’s characters are always vibrant and magnetic and these two are no exception. They quickly drew me in and I was ensconced in their world. Speaking of, Chi an Mor fills my heart with so much joy. I was thrilled to see Oz and Silas living their happily ever after. Cora steals the show whenever she’s on page. However, it’s not only the charming characters and a stunning setting that dazzle us here but their rich story. Morton gives us a breathtaking restoration…and I’m not talking about paintings. Milo possesses a gentle strength and resilience that he doesn’t see. Niall is determined to show him. Milo was ashamed of his past until Niall helps him see the truth. His story is inspiring. His courage is tremendous. His heart is precious. I loved the building trust and confidence. I adored the determination and faith. And the epilogue was pure perfection! There’s a lot to love and I hope we catch more of them in the next book. Perhaps with some of those predictions that Milo voiced? *puppy eyes*

Beware of: Domestic abuse and the recovery of its aftermath. Invisible scars don’t heal easily. Best friends that embrace sexual freedom until a new desire deviates the boundaries of their relationship. And a love story that demonstrates the power of selfless love.

This book is for: Lily Morton groupies have most definitely pounced on this beauty by now but if you’re not part of her following, you should correct that ASAP.

Lily Morton has become a favorite author since last year, particularly for her snarky sarcastic British humor and I have gotten used to waiting for every new release of hers. Milo and Niall were introduced in Oz and I’ve wanted to know more of their story since then. But this book turned to be something I wasn’t expecting.

Milo’s backstory was very painful to read. He’s a fighter, who struggled hard to overcome his stutter and gain confidence before losing it all again because of an abusive relationship. I enjoyed reading about his growth, how he slowly realized what and who he wanted in life and he needed a lot of nudging to get there. Niall is very confident, kind of like a force of nature, whom Milo has always crushed on but isn’t sure if he can actually be with such a person. It takes a lot of time for Milo to see Niall in a different light than his ex and for Niall to see Milo as a prospective partner rather than his closest friend and former lover’s brother. Even though there were some feelings on both sides, the relationship was quite a slow burn and took time to develop and I enjoyed it.

The side characters have always played very significant roles in Morton’s earlier books and that’s where this book faltered for me. It was a joy to see so much more of Silas and Oz along with their adorable daughter Cora and each of them were instrumental in helping the MCs realize their true feelings. However, the whole arc with Milo’s brother Gideon, his and Niall’s sometime lover Jacinta and various other friends of theirs felt like a filler, not adding anything important to the story while also being a turn off sometimes. While the story of a main character going from being one brother’s lover to another wouldn’t necessarily be a deal breaker for me, I don’t think it was handled well here. The signature humor of Morton, while present in the first half of the book, was few and far between as the story progressed.

Finally, I can probably say that I had a lot of expectations from this book and it didn’t live up to them. While I liked both the MCs individually and am glad that they got together, I wasn’t completely invested in the story and kept getting distracted while reading. I can sense that the upcoming book will probably be about Gideon, and while I didn’t like his character, I don’t think I will be giving it a miss. I recommend this if you are a Lily Morton fan like me, but go into it with lowered expectations.

Hmm, mixed feelings about this. Really liked the first half, but the second not so much.

I loved the prologue. Niall went right up in my estimations after he rescued Milo from an abusive relationship. Two years on, Milo’s life couldn’t be more different. He’s grown in confidence, overcome his speech impediment and found new friends. If only he could stop crushing on his older brothers’ BF. If only Niall would stop treating him with kid gloves. Fortunately, the pair grow a lot closer when they’re left holding the fort and looking after baby Cora *sigh* (I’ll never tire of this trope, no matter how overdone and it resulted in some very cute scenes together). Silas and Oz making an occasional appearance was an added bonus.

Sadly, I just didn’t like how everything unfolded when Gideon (Milo’s brother) arrived on the scene. Although I didn’t particularly like Gideon, I thought Niall and Milo were a little tactless and insensitive around him and they either made silly decisions or acted ooc. In addition, Milo’s doubts and insecurities, although justified, wore thin. However, It did pick up towards the end and I was happy with the resolution. I just wish it hadn’t taken so long.

Even though I didn’t like this as much as book one, it was an okay read and I’m looking forward to Gideon’s story next.

BR with my reading bestie Cass!

This one starts on the saddest note, poor Milo. I feel so connected to him because his horrible boyfriend Thomas reminds me of the man that almost ruined my life.

Oh my lord … men and babies. Does it seriously get any cuter than that?!

Oh Gideon, you and I have had so many ups and downs. It’s been a love/hate from the moment I met you. Fortunately it ended on a high note and I can actually look forward to your book.

I love them both individually. Milo reminds me so much of myself, we both went through similar situations with both our families and men. When he’s down I want to cuddle him until we fall asleep.

Niall has the best, biggest heart yet he’s so unsure of himself that he goes back and forth on almost everything he says. It’s interesting how he can be both the most confident and the most insecure. Anyone would be lucky to catch a man like Niall.

But it’s when you put them together that the real magic happens. They’re two puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly and make the most extraordinary whole.

I loved so many of Lily’s books, which is why I’ve made my goal this year to read her entire back catalogue. But this book, with these two wonderful men has been the greatest pleasure. As of now Milo is my favorite.

The book feels kind of weird to me. I'm a bit stuck in between. On the one hand, I love it, on the other hand, as I feared, it didn't deliver what it promised. The problem is, I love Oz, the first book of this series is one of my absolute favorites which I have read many times. That's why Milo has a hard time.
The beginning, the dark beginning of Milo's story blew me away and touched me deeply.

“I really don’t know why it’s always me having to tell you what to do, Milo. You’re so bloody hopeless. Like a fucking amoeba with no thoughts of your own. Happy to wallow around while I pay for everything.” 😡😤🤬🤯

I wanted to quarter this pathetic specimen of boyfriend. And Niall, knight in shining armor, I wanted to love him to infinity.

I don’t care how long it takes you to talk to me, Lo, just as long as you keep talking to me and never stop. 😍😍😍

Unfortunately, the plot doesn't work so well for me. Milo heals slowly understandably and has a hard time engaging in relationships. But Niall is really hard to understand, I don't know how he can be so sensitive on the one hand and such a dumb jerk on the other.

Then, when something finally tentatively develops between the two, various characters emerge who really got on my nerves.
I understand the author's intention behind all this and yes it works but it felt like a struggle to read the book even though it is actually quite light and easy going.
So a good story written in the wonderful style of Lily Morton just unfortunately not a perfect fit for me.

I understand that overlapping can occur where bed-partners are concerned cos after all it’s a small world. But, what bothered me was the longevity of Niall and Gideon’s sexual relationship. It wasn’t youthful experimentation or a one-off leading to them being friends and nothing more. No, this lasted right up until a month before he crawled into bed with Milo.

How am I as a reader suppose to think Niall’s feelings for Milo are genuine? When he can’t refrain from bedding his brother. So much so that Gideon shows up unexpected and uninvited with another person I might add to continue his sex-capades with Niall. He then proceeded to goad Milo by constantly bringing up multiple sexual encounters he and Niall have had. I kept expecting Gideon to ask Milo how his dick tastes cos he was just that petty. Like, I get it you had him first. STFU!

Also, I feel like the trip to the chalet was a wasted opportunity to grow and strengthen their relationship. Instead of giving Niall & Milo the chance to overcome the whole Gideon thing it was page after page of uninteresting and unnecessary dialogue, banter and petty squabbling amongst side characters no one wanted or needed. 😩

I started this book 17th February and I just couldn't get into it. I tried for 3 days to get back to the book, but not matter what I told myself, I found no interest in continuing. I simply didn't like it. I didn't like the characters, I didn't like the story (as far as I got). I knew as soon as I started it that it wouldn't work for me at all and the further I got, the worse the feeling got. I don't know what's wrong with me, maybe books just doesn't work for me anymore, I dunno. Maybe I'll try again sometime in the future.
No rating as I didn't finish.

2.5 stars! Disappointed 😓. This was so difficult to finish despite the fact that I skipped pages. It was full of things that just made me cringe. 😳. This was also disappointing because I have loved all of Ms Morton's work but this never took off for me.. the chemistry seemed forced, one of the MCs was unlikable, and finally there was a huge "ick" factor which I never got over 🤢.. All of that added to an un-funny book with not much of a plot either. Sorry (not sorry)

4.5 Stars!

It took me awhile to read this one and the pacing was pretty slow.

But I really liked Milo and especially Niall.

Milo's insecurities were a bit much from time to time. And yeah, like most the whole sleeping with two brothers thing was a bit weird. But ti didn't bother me much.

Overall, a really good read with some great banter and plenty steam.

I loved this ... there was angst, love and fierce emotions throughout. The relationships Milo had with Niall, Oz and Sirus was so beautiful, each one unique and special. Every person brought another little piece of Milo out of his shell and once he realized where he was and how he felt - Niall was there waiting. A protector and friend who loved him. I non stop read this and enjoyed every moment ❤️

I was feeling it, I liked Milo and Niall and things were progressing and there was sweetness and I loved seeing Oz and Silas again and all, but then. BAM! Left turn into WhyWouldYouDoThisToMeville?

Gideon and The Cuntress ruined this book for me for multiple reasons!

I am usually a big fan of this author but, I found, this book to not be as enjoyable as her previous. I really missed the usual banter between the two MCs that so many of her other stories have. I also was not a fan of If that was not such a huge part of the book I may have liked it more.

The story as a whole was just ok for me.

The first part was lovely. I really liked Milo. Despite his insecurities, he was a sweet and adorable character. As for Niall, I'm on a fence about him. There were things about him I didn't like, especially his past, but I loved the way he was with Milo. They were great together, I loved their dialogues, and there were some really cute scenes with Cora.

The second part of the story wasn't that enjoyable for me. The whole situation with Gideon didn't work for me. It felt awkward and it made Gideon very unlikable in my eyes. I didn't see the point of the trip with all those random people. I didn't like any of them. Also, I felt that Milo and Niall were too much in denial about how they felt, considering how long they have known each other.

Just as in Lily Morton’s other books, my favorite parts of Milo’s story are the humor, wit and banter of the characters. Milo isn’t quite as sharp at it as Oz but then again, he had a bit of a harder road. Niall is Silas’s best friend but he’s also another type of friend to Milo’s brother Gideon. The story begins as at Gideon’s request, Niall gets Milo out of an abusive relationship. In the five years since, Milo is still sadly lacking in self confidence. When Niall begins seeing Milo as desirable, Milo can’t stop thinking it’s temporary, he’s not interesting enough and how can he compete with people like...Gideon. And that’s where the story went off the rails for me. Gideon is a famous actor, doesn’t live nearby and he and Milo were raised differently because of Milo’s issues and Gideon was sent off to boarding schools. Still, that entire part of the storyline was just too weird for me, plus I couldn’t see the point of all those other people that were around. Nothing bad or awful happens and Milo and his brother end up okay. The book ends quite happily with lots of warm, loving scenes and an epilogue set a few years in the future. Most readers likely won’t have any issues like mine, so don’t let it stop you from reading. It’s still excellent writing and I did enjoy many parts of it quite a lot.

AUDIOBOOK: AUGUST 2020 - ADDING A STAR!! Joel Leslie killed this book and made it so much more fun for me. JL truly made Niall and Milo POP OFF THE PAGE and made me enjoy this book so much more 👏❤️👏

My original review said this book bored me—strike that, because I ENJOYED EVERY SNARKY SECOND of this book!!

ORIGINAL REVIEW eBOOK: Feb. 2019
Dare I say it? This book was a bit.....

boring.

There.

I called a Lily Morton book a bit boring. Kill me, despise me, defriend me, but it’s true.

From the get go this book felt heavier than the previous one in the series; felt heavier than any other of her books. And yes, it lightened up. Milo grew more assured after being rescued by Niall from an abusive relationship. Years this took. Years for Niall to see him as something other than a kid. It took even longer for Milo to realize that he loved Niall.

It all just took a long time. Hence, the “bit boring” tag. Yes, there was some snark, but overall the book felt flat. Once the love was declared it became a morass of overflowing feelings that took a long time to be said. Again with the “taking a long time” bit.

There was little external conflict in the book, and the one obvious impediment (the fact that Milo’s brother and Niall were regular hook up buddies) was a barely negligible bump on the road to HEA.

I enjoyed the first half and then the long drag came and, well, I just wanted to be done with the book. It wasn’t bad, but like this review, it could have been shorter and a bit more exciting.

I am really enjoyed this book until about the half way point and then I started skipping around and giving it the side eye in many places.

Morton creates a great character in Milo. Life long friends become lovers but with a great deal of complications.

Niall has a pretty long term friends with benefits relationship with Milo's older brother and Milo is still recovering from a very abusive relationship years ago.

The setting on this English Estate is great as is the cast (the kids are amazing) and the grumpy cat.

The move from friends to lovers between Milo and Niall isn't done with enough conversation for me and this issue becomes worst when Milo's brother Gideon pops by with a third for a threesome.

And then the book tanks for a long while for me. I can deal with Niall and Gideon having been together. I can't handle how awful they both seem to be and that Niall didn't feel maybe he should have said something to Gideon.

Gideon, who looks to be the next hero in the series, will need a lot of redeeming.

And Niall ... oh boy... I don't love a playboy or at least I like someone much more self examined.

At some point we get a lovely HEA but so much was missed in really looking at the impact of the abuse Milo endured on their sex life (magic wang is present) and Niall become un understandable.

So. yeah.

“Real love goes both ways. It gives back what you give to it tenfold. I might rescue you sometimes, but I know that when I need you you’ll rescue me back.

I love you, so that means I want the absolute best for you, but I’d also hope that you’d want the same for me.”

Nothing gets my heart pumping more than unrequited love and twenty-seven-year old Milo knows what it feels like, perhaps better than anyone; hopelessly pining for his older brother's best friend, Niall - gorgeous, striking, handsome, perfect - is the cruelest kind of torment, one that you know is futile to pursue that one sided attraction with the hopeful notion that his one sided attraction could ever amount to anything more. 😢 Especially considering the relationship he has with his gorgeous and witty older brother, Gideon - not only best friend since their school years, but a casual hook-up that has had their fair share of adventurous heated turns in the bedroom that Milo has had the misfortune stab to the heart to witness. 'Niall would never have looked at me. I’d just wanted to be close to him at the time.' It is a cruel fate, but Milo has learned to live with the fact that he may never earn that cursory second glance from him - just someone who he loves and protects and looks out for, because it is what he has always done. 😥

I sense a tug between us like he’s finally noticed the rope that somehow binds me to him and he’s pulling at it on his side.

Yet it is funny how life can work out; that once Milo is convinced that this is his fate - accepting that he'll never be more than just Niall's best friend's younger brother, it becomes evidently clear to Niall how very much Milo is not just his best friend's younger brother anymore. 'He’s never been attracted to me before, so why would he start now?' Not just the little kid that chased them around when they were younger - the one he defended and protected others from when they poked fun at his stutter and appearance. And despite their twelve year age difference, he realizes that maybe, just maybe he's had eyes for him all this time - just needed time to realize it. 💘💘

And if it takes babysitting sweet angelic Cora while her parents are away for those feelings to come to fruition - when they have Chi an Mor all to themselves - then who is to blame for what happens when their attraction finally becomes mutual the more time they spend close together rather than further apart? 🥺🥺

I really do just breeze through these stories. Not exactly refreshing, but still fresh-feeling - to be fair, they are just my guilty pleasures that I indulge myself in. And if I get some healthy character progress, some steamy swoony times and some lively banter then who am I to complain? And the theme - the recurring theme of finding a home with someone you love - to build a future that has eluded you till you find the one worth building it for. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 That is what I savored in Milo and Niall's status quo. The shift in their relationship came very gradually and I liked how Niall's perception of Milo slowly changed into something much deeper that went beyond his appreciation of how dedicated and talented he was with his creativity and knack for scoping at artistic pieces.

How he admired his dedication and passion for his work - his resilience to overcome the trials of his past relationship. It was something fueled by his ever-present protective streak for him, but now feeding off his desire to be the one always by his side - jealous of the very thought that someone would get to see the confident and capable person he had grown up to be. 🥲 'All of him, quirks and everything. But first he’s got to trust me.' It is also such a big step for him - one who has never seen himself settling down for one person - someone who has always been a casual fuck-buddy for his older brother - it really does make for some uncomfortable waters to test. But Milo is worth the risk and effort - even if he fails - he can't help but try. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Being with him like this is almost what I imagine dancing with a long-term partner to be. Easy and fluid, our bodies seem to know what the other one is doing and echoes it.

“You make me happy.” I finally say the words, stumbling a little.

And Milo is worth it - he is - he is such a sweetheart. I love that he became more confident in himself, loved him flourishing in his own talents, loved the comfortable ease in which his friendship with Oz and Silas deepened. He has had such a sad past that has denied him the simple act of loving himself - and resigned that he is unworthy of Niall's affections - so self-conscious of his stutter and his weaker build - that when he finally has people around him who love him - it is such a heartwarming thing to witness. 😊 So to see that Nordic model-esque thirty-nine year old suddenly look at him with an affection that runs deeper than brotherly love - it would stir his heart even if he wants to deny it. 'I shouldn’t be so territorial over what was supposed to be a hook-up. Niall was never going to be mine, so why does it feel like he was meant to be?'

I didn't fault him for wanting to take that risk - wanting to be with someone so much more experienced in bed, and who was not hesitant to let himself be vulnerable for him - trusting him with all that he has never felt before. 🤍🤍 Nor did I think he was wrong in questioning whether or not Niall was in it for the long run - or if he needed to remind him that he wasn't the same young boy he once was - not realizing that Niall loved him for who he was now, till he showed him just how much he had noticed. 😏 'And I’m going to be so fucking happy because I’ve had the worst and now I have the best.' That Niall isn't just Milo's chance to see what he has to offer others, when Niall can be the one to offer him and be his everything? 💞

When I tell you that there is no room for anyone else in my head at any time? That you fill me up all the time, in bed and out of it, so that all I can think of is you?

That I can’t remember a time when you didn’t occupy some part of my mind, but now you’re lodged in all of it?

Their confessions had me swooning - my silly romantic heart can't help itself. Even with Niall taking it upon himself to make Milo feel more confident in bed, to experience the pleasures denied him because of his one and only past abusive lover, I love that Milo did not just accept his protective and nurturing streak as a sign that he wants him. 🥹🥹 As much as he appreciated that he cared for him, he wanted to be treated as his equal -I don’t want you to hesitate with me and second-guess everything- not someone that he constantly had to shield from harm - someone that he could love for who he is and not how he sees him as. And that is what made their relationship become more solid - something that created the shift from what he has been his whole life to his partner - his lover - his future. ♥️♥️ 'But not towards home because my home is riding by the side of me.' There was such a nice balance between them just being together - but being gentle about it - not rushing into it, but savoring the tender kindness that comes with having such a long history of knowing their past and seeing if it can be something they can share together in the present.

Lily Morton is one of the few authors that I contend myself with the knowledge that I'll never quite any fault with the writing; despite how formulaic it is to the point some readers might even say it is boring; yet it is something I've come to rely on to kickstart my monthly reading, even if I know there is no guarantee that the relationship or the romance will be an appealing one. If it is - then, well, I'm definitely in luck. 🥰 She always has a decent balance of sugar, spice, and everything nice that I'm partial to. 'His smiles always look slightly mysterious to me, like secrets are resting on those lips.' Ticking off the usual checkboxes of what to expect in the hassle of their romance is an amusing pastime for me, but happily enough, the evil ex did not get much screen time, despite how annoying his eventual presence was. 🙄 While visiting exotic European locations from the comfort of my bed and a dash of flashy annoying side characters that make you appreciate the story without their presence. If it sounds like I'm criticising, I really am not. ☺️ I'm actually just amused at how amusing it feels to know that what you've signed off for what to expect, does actually deliver in that respect. 👍🏻👍🏻

Don’t play games, Gideon. It doesn’t become you and if you hurt him, you’ll have to come through me first.”

“Threats before breakfast,” he muses casually. “How very Dynasty.

Their emotions just felt very honest and genuine; the way Niall went about earning that status - proving to Milo and Gideon that his affection was genuine and true and forever made for such a heartwarming, and rather bittersweet romance. To see that it is not only two people's hearts changing, but a third, as well - to see each of them growing a pair (pardon the euphemism 😅) to address it head-on and not avoid the change - that Milo fought for his place to prove to his brother that what he feels for Niall is more than just a childhood crush, but something he believes and trusts in, regardless of how pettily they avoided talking about it for awhile. Well, I can't really blame Gideon - Niall was a catch he couldn't bear to toss back to sea, save for the love of a brother he never really got to care for as brothers... 🥺

I am still a bit ambivalent of my feelings for Gideon; am I supposed to feel sorry for him? Does he deserve his own happy ending? Does he still harbor feelings for Niall? Can he get over it? Ah, so many thoughts, so many unresolved questions, but I have to wait a few more weeks before I'll get my answer to them. 😊

Snark, banter, laughter and wild hair are the protagonists of Lily Morton's latest book, Milo.

Milo had been in an abusive relationship for years when he was in his early twenties. It was a relationship that marked him and changed the course of his life.

Niall is Milo's older brother's best friend and had been in Milo's life since he can remember. He's also the one who got him away from his abusive ex and helped him restore his faith in himself and start living again.

They are completely and unmistakenly different in almost every way but they have a connection and a chemistry that makes them perfect for each other. Milo is gentle, shy and doesn't like to gather attention. Niall is loud, popular and the life of the party. At first glance they shouldn't work together, but Milo mellows Niall, slows him down, makes him appreciate the simple things in life and he has a calming effect on him. Niall on the other hand draws Milo out of his shell, encourages him and cheers him on.

At the same time they both are different with the other than they are with the rest of the world. Niall isn't afraid to show his gentle side, he is fiercely protective and possesive of Milo and he's jealous for the first time in his life over another person. Milo is more open with Niall than he is with anyone else, he laughs freely and loudly, talks more and is less anxious about his stutter because he knows Niall will never lose patience with him but he'll always wait him out and listen to what he has to say.

I liked their story and I laughed many times while reading it. Lily Morton is an expert in writing banter and her sense of humor aligns with mine surely and effortlessly every time I read one of her books.

My only complaint is Niall's relationship with Milo's brother, Gideon. It was the main source of drama for the story and while it made for some interesting situations it was also kind of weird and slightly icky. I didn't like Gideon as a character and the author's try to redeem him at the end didn't move me from my stance.

What really threw me was the resident ghosts of Sila's estate. They were only mentioned once and there was no plot line involving them so it was very unexpected and I didn't understand why they were there. Also, I wasn't aware that there was a paranormal element in the story so that added to my surprise. Maybe they played more of a role in the first book and I would have understood their mention in the story if I had read Oz first.

Milo is part of a series but it can be read as a standalone, I should know having skipped the first one - I'll fix that though in the future. Oz and Silas are very present here but they don't intrude in the story and they don't steal the spotlight with their own drama. They are supporting and very well developed characters.

The epilogue was a charming addition to the story and the perfect HEA for Milo and Niall. It showed how far Milo had manged to come and how big of a role Niall had played in that by just being there for him.

It hurts to say this because I've loved pretty much every book I've read by this author but this was
1. Boring - the first half I liked, the second dragged and it gor weird
2. The weirdness - I am okay with Niall history but did they have to stretch the drama for all those chapters? It made Guideon terribly unlikable and he is the next MC!
I am not very excited about his story tbh.

So yeah, I'm closing this book with a disappointed sigh.

Whilst this was a lot different in tone to the first book, I really liked it. Seeing Milo gain back his confidence through hard work and also Niall's unwavering support was fabulous and seeing Niall fall for Milo without any ridiculous pushing away made this a big win for me.

Loved it!

Chi an Mor

dreamy.gif

In Milo, we are back at Chi an Mor where Oz and Silas fell in love (In the book #1, Oz) and at the end of that book I was impatiently waiting for Milo’s story so I could dwell in the land of witty banter between Milo and Niall forever and ever. And I did, at least for the first half.

Milo starts out with a big trigger warning for domestic abuse. Milo is at such a low point during the opening scene and is thankfully saved by Niall who goes all beast mode on the fucker of an ex while wrapping Milo in a blanket of protection. Milo is carried off to Chi an Mor, an estate in the wilds of Cornwall to heal, find his inner strength again, and realize the sassy spitfire he used to be is still there.

Niall, the frustratingly arrogant yet kind soul that he is, slowly brings Milo back to life. He doesn’t fix him but gently forces Milo to realize his own self worth along the way and is always Milo’s biggest supporter. Niall has been in Milo’s life since they were teenagers and Niall was best friends with Milo’s brother. They have a sweet friendship because of the long history and there’s also a sassy wit and/or low grade exasperation between them that begins to serve as foreplay. They are soooooo sweet together but not in the everything is so perfect and lovey dovey boring without snark kind of way. I’m talking the good kind where each man is supportive, brings their own personalities and quirks to the relationship, and can still have fantastically entertaining exchanges as each make their points.

“Well, Milo,” he says mock seriously. “My milkshake might bring all the boys to my yard, but I’m afraid you’re not getting a drink yet because I value my body too much to give it away for free.”

Milo starts out very strong and entertaining. However, IMO, as the story unfolds, too much is added in. It seems like the overall plot gets lost about midway through and it never quite gets back on track as drama continues to randomly pop up. Some of it seems like filler and another element becomes *really* off-putting. I understand that Milo’s brother is going to end up playing a part in this story, but the direction it goes would have been fine if there weren’t constant references to the part he played.

shrug.gif

Still, I LOVE Niall and Milo separately and together. They are hot during their smexy times and are really lovely to experience as their own story. I have also maintained my giant crush on Oz and Silas and I’m *so* happy they have an active part in this story. Recommended.

“A real man? Can you hear that? What is a real man, Milo? I’ll tell you what a real man is. He’s someone kind and generous and loving. Someone who has had his spirit crushed yet gets back up and carries on making ugly things beautiful.”
